RIO GRANDE — Country music legend Joe Diffie said he loves seeing people have fun and communicating with his fans when he performs.
And he’ll be paying them a visit down on the
farm.
Known for his hit songs such as “John Deere
Green,” “Pickup Man” and “Third Rock from the
Sun,” Diffie is set to perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday
at the Bob Evans Farm Shelterhouse Amphitheater
in Rio Grande.
The Grammy and CMA award-winning artist
said he is looking forward to performing in front
of his fans in southeastern Ohio on Saturday night.
“I hope the fans will come out and have a great
time,” he said.
Diffie has recorded more than 20 Top 10 singles
and 12 studio albums. The legendary singer found
himself squarely back in the hearts and minds of
country fans after the release of Jason Aldean’s hit
“1994,” which mentions many of Diffie’s 12 No. 1
hits, including “Pickup Man,” “Third Rock from
the Sun” and “John Deere Green.”
The multiplatinum-selling singer who dominated
the charts in the 1990s has been writing, touring
and recording a myriad of projects in the last several years to introduce his music to a new generation of fans, including his critically-acclaimed 2010
bluegrass album “Homecoming,” and his recent
“Roots and Boots” acoustic tour and collaborative

High-tech Marvel theme park
cuts summer tour short
NEW YORK (AP) — The indoor high-tech
traveling theme park "The Marvel Experience" has
stumbled and will cut short its summer tour.
Producers of the show that includes 360-degree
projections, holograms and a 4-D motion ride said
Sunday its big debut in Philadelphia will be its
one and only stop. The Chicago, New York and St.

Refunds will be available. No reason was given
for the show's abrupt cancellation.
It's another black eye for co-producers Michael
Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris, whose "SpiderMan: Turn Off the Dark" was a costly failure
on Broadway. Hero Ventures, a Los Angelesbased entertainment company, and Marvel
Entertainment also produced the tour.
The $30 million show had previously made

being retooled for the current run.

using foreign media reports. The
Foreign Ministry in a briefing urged
foreign reporters to avoid using
terms like “Islamists” or “jihadis”
and suggested in a paper distributed to reporters that they instead use
terms like “terrorists,” ‘’savages,”
and “eradicators.”
The draft bill states that “anyone
who intends to publish news or
statements about terrorist attacks in
way that differs from official statements issued by concerned authorities is punishable by imprisonment
of no less than two years.” An
earlier version stipulated the news
must be untrue to be punished, but
the word “untrue” was dropped, the
judicial official said.
The bill would create special
courts to hear terrorism cases. It
would also eliminate one of the two
layers of appeal that are currently
allowed in criminal cases, and it
would shorten the deadlines for filing appeals to 40 days from 60.
It would also create a new category of detention — “restraining”
— meaning police can detain someone solely on the basis of suspicion
without evidence of a crime for a
7-day-period, which prosecutors
can renew an unlimited number
of times. The draft also grants the
president the right to declare curfews and evacuate residents from an
area for a period of six months, with
the approval of the Cabinet. It says
law enforcers cannot be questioned
over use of force if it is to protect
themselves from imminent danger
and is proportional.

Man pleads guilty in crash that
killed mom, 3 young sons
LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — A man accused of
drag racing another driver before a crash that
killed a Philadelphia woman and her three young
sons has pleaded guilty.
The Philadelphia Daily News (http://bit.
ly/1JJYY4l) reports that 32-year-old Ahmen
Holloman was sentenced to five to 10 years in
state prison following his plea Monday to four
counts of vehicular homicide.
Authorities say he was racing Khusen
Akhmedov as the mother and her children were
crossing a boulevard on foot in July 2013.
Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday
in the trial of the 24-year-old Akhmedov, who is
charged with third-degree murder, vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter and other counts.
Authorities say he fatally struck 27-year-old
Samara Banks and her three sons — ages 4, 23
months and 7 months. A 5-year-old son survived.

Mexican helicopter comes under
fire, kills 6 near US border
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s navy says
six people are dead after a group of suspected
criminals sparked a skirmish by opening fire on a
Marine helicopter near the U.S. border.
The navy says the incident happened on Sunday
in a rural area south of Nuevo Laredo, which is
across the border from Laredo, Texas.
In a statement Monday, the navy said the suspects fired on the Blackhawk helicopter, hitting
it seven times. The helicopter crew returned
fire, killing six suspects. No navy personnel were
injured.
The navy said the crew detected a convoy of
armed men in an area long dominated by the
Zetas cartel.
In a May 1 attack, gunmen in the western state
of Jalisco shot down an army helicopter with a
rocket launcher, killing 10.

Aretha Franklin sings praises of
Illinois after highway help
CHICAGO (AP) — Aretha Franklin’s spokesman says the Queen of Soul is grateful to the state
of Illinois for its help when her tour bus broke
down on the way to Chicago.
Transmission problems stopped the bus around
1:20 a.m. Monday a few miles from downtown on
eastbound Interstate 290.
Franklin’s assistants couldn’t find a car service
with an available vehicle. That’s when the Illinois
State Police stepped in.
Three units from ISP, and three from the Illinois
Department of Transportation, drove Franklin and
her entourage to their hotel.
Franklin’s reaction? Spokesman Clarence
Waldron says the singer exclaimed, “Hallelujah!”
and said, “God was right on time.”
State Police spokesman Matt Boerwinkle says
disabled vehicles can be dangerous, so handling
breakdowns is a priority. The agency handled
more than 82,000 motorist assists last year.

4 Royals elected ASG starters
NEW YORK (AP) —
The All-Star Game will
have a Kansas City flavor,
just not as much as it
appeared last month.
And the hometown
Reds can celebrate a
starter, too, despite Cincinnati’s sorry season.
Houston second baseman Jose Altuve passed
Kansas City’s Omar
Infante in the final days
of voting, leaving four
Royals as starters for the
All-Star Game.
Cincinnati’s Todd
Frazier leapfrogged St.
Louis third baseman Matt
Carpenter and will be in
the NL starting lineup for
the July 14 game at Great
American Ball Park,
according to final results
announced Sunday.
AL champion Kansas
City will be represented
in the starting lineup by
outfielders Lorenzo Cain
and Alex Gordon, catcher
Salvador Perez and shortstop Alcides Escobar.
Four players ties the AL
record for fan-elected
starters, achieved nine
times previously.
Kansas City had not
had any starters since
outfielder Jermaine Dye
in 2000.
“Winning brings attention, and that’s what
we’ve been doing,” Gor-

don said. “I think we
play with a lot of energy,
a lot of fun. People have
noticed it.”
Eight Royals were on
track to start in vote
totals announced June
15, but first baseman Eric
Hosmer, third baseman
Mike Moustakas and
designated hitter Kendrys
Morales also were overtaken.
“We’re going to have a
blast,” said Royals manager Ned Yost, manager
of the AL team. “The
All-Star Game is an experience you never forget,
and to do it with so many
of our teammates there is
really special.”
Yost already has made
one decision: Cain will
play right field and Mike
Trout of the Los Angeles
Angels will play center.
Trout will make his fourth
straight All-Star appearance.
Seattle’s Nelson Cruz,
suspended for the final 50
games of the 2013 season
for violating baseball’s
drug agreement, was
elected to start for the
second straight year. In
the closest vote at any
position, Cruz’s 10.6 million votes edged Morales’
10.32 million at designated hitter.
Toronto’s Josh Donald-

son will start at third for
the second straight year
after receiving a record
vote total of 14.09 million, topping Josh Hamilton’s 11.07 million in
2012. Trout was second
this year with 14 million.
Washington outfielder
Bryce Harper set a mark
for NL players at 13.86
million, topping the previous record of 7.62 million
set three years ago by San
Francisco catcher Buster
Posey, who was elected to
start again this year.
MLB said 620 million
votes were cast, breaking
the old mark of 391 million in 2012. The New
York Yankees do not have
any fan-elected starters for
the first time since 2001.
At least two elected
starters will miss the
game because of injuries:
Miami outfielder Giancarlo Stanton broke a hand
on June 26, and Detroit
first baseman Miguel
Cabrera hurt his left calf
Friday. In addition, the
Cardinals’ Matt Holliday,
who finished third among
NL outfielders behind
Harper and Stanton,
has been sidelined since
straining a quadriceps on
June 8 and is uncertain
when he will return.
“I’m getting there,” Holliday said. “I’ve got a few

more hurdles to clear with
my running, but I feel like
I’m getting pretty close.”
Each fan could cast up
to 35 ballots in the first
year of all-online voting.
Pitchers and reserves will
be announced Monday.
Altuve overturned a
232,000-vote deficit in
Monday’s update and finished with 9.63 million to
top Infante, who was just
shy of 9 million. Frazier
trailed Carpenter by 2.5
million votes in mid-June
and by 63,000 at the start
of the week but finished
ahead by 2.1 million.
“I was really nervous.
I was excited. It was a
huge comeback,” Frazier
said. “I’m pretty much on
Cloud Nine.”
NL starters include Arizona first baseman Paul
Goldschmidt, Miami second baseman Dee Gordon
and St. Louis shortstop
Jhonny Peralta, who also
was suspended 50 games
following MLB’s investigation of the Biogenesis
of America clinic.
Dee Gordon remembered attending All-Star
Games when his dad,
pitcher Tom Gordon,
made the roster.
“In 2004 I got kicked
off the field for trying
to rob Home Run Derby
homers,” he said.

Lee wins Greenbrier Classic in 4-man playoff
WHITE SULPHUR
SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) —
Danny Lee was overcome with
nerves after qualifying for a
four-man playoff at The Greenbrier Classic.
By the time he walked to the
first playoff tee, he was ready.
Lee earned his first PGA
Tour victory when he parred
the second hole of Sunday’s
sudden-death playoff, eliminating David Hearn after Kevin
Kisner and Robert Streb faltered on the first playoff hole.
“All I can say is wow,” Lee
said. “I finally did it.”
Lee, Hearn, Kisner and Streb
were tied at 13 under after four
rounds on the Old White TPC
course. And Lee wasn’t in a
good place mentally heading
into the playoff.
“I was so nervous,” he said.
“My head was blank, and I was
just trying to breathe.”
For good measure, Lee said
his caddie, Kurt Kowaluk, put

the piece of paper indicating
his playoff starting position
into a mock wishing well on
the par-3 18th tee.
“He put it in there so I can
win it,” Lee said.
By then, Lee had his focus
back.
“I felt ready,” he said. “I
felt like I could really win this
thing.”
The South Korean-born New
Zealander earned $1.2 million
and became the ninth first-time
winner on the tour this season.
The former U.S. Amateur
champion was competing in
his 27th event this season,
including his eighth in nine
weeks. He is trying to qualify
for the international team for
the Presidents Cup in October
in South Korea. He was 47th in
the standings heading into The
Greenbrier Classic.
“I never get tired of playing
golf,” Lee said. “I mean, it’s my
job, and I just love doing it, and

I’m just happy to be out here
every week.”
Kisner shot a 6-under 64
to get to the clubhouse at 13
under.
Hearn (67) and Lee (67)
birdied No. 17 to join the playoff. Both missed birdie putts
for the lead on the final hole in
regulation.
Streb shot a 5-under 65 in
the final round by making five
birdie putts on the back nine
with a 56-degree wedge after
breaking his putter on the
ninth hole. The putter broke
when Streb tossed it at his bag
next to the green.
“It hit the bottom of the bag
and the (putter) head went
flying,” Streb said. “It was not
my intent, but that was what
happened. And so I said, well,
let’s see what we can do with a
wedge.”
He three-putted No. 17 for
bogey, but got in the playoff
with a 6-foot birdie at No. 18.

Streb was allowed a replacement putter for the playoff,
but he never got to use it after
missing the green.
Lee and Hearn made birdie
putts on the first playoff hole,
also eliminating Kisner, who
lost in a playoff for the third
time this season.
On the second playoff hole,
Hearn drove behind a tree on
the par-5 17th and made bogey.
“That was probably the only
bad tee shot I hit all day,” said
Hearn, who is still looking for
his first PGA Tour win in 164
events. “I’ve just got to keep
giving myself chances like this,
and it’s going to happen soon.”
Lee also missed the fairway,
but reached the green in three
shots and two-putted from
across the green for par.
It marked the third playoff in
the tournament’s six-year history.
Tiger Woods started the day
seven shots behind the leaders,

shot a bogey-free 67 and said
he made some “nice strides”
heading into next week’s British Open.
“Best I’ve hit it in a long,
long, long time,” Woods said. “I
had full control over all clubs.
This could have been one of
those special rounds.”
Woods broke a streak of 55
consecutive rounds with at
least one bogey. It was his first
time under par in a final round
since the 2013 Tour Championship.
Lee, Hearn, James Hahn and
Greg Owen earned spots at St.
Andrews. There also were four
spots handed out a week ago
at the Travelers Championship
and one more is available this
week at the John Deere Classic.
Russell Henley shot 63 and
finished fifth at 12 under. Seven
others were at 11 under, including Chad Collins (69), who was
tied for the lead before bogeying the final two holes.

LeBron James is available. Marc Gasol, too.
That’s two All-NBA first team members from
last season still on the market, in case anybody
thinks all the best players are gone.
Of course, nobody really believes either is leaving his current club, so teams will have to look
at lesser names as they continue filling out their
rosters in free agency.
LaMarcus Aldridge came off the board Saturday
when he committed to San Antonio, highlighting
the holiday weekend fireworks. DeAndre Jordan
had already decided on Dallas, placing two of this
year’s biggest prizes deep in the heart of Texas.
The dizzying days after the market opened last
Wednesday morning were so busy that it feels
there can’t be many good options left, even though
contracts can’t even be signed until Thursday.
It’s different than last season, when James,
Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh, the marquee
names available, took more than 10 days to make
their decisions.
Action has moved more quickly this year, starting with Anthony Davis’ extension in New Orleans
that was agreed to just minutes after the market
opened. But the dealing isn’t done, and how teams
fare in the coming days could pay off in June.

US enjoys one final celebration before leaving Canada
By Tim Booth
AP Sports Writer

VANCOUVER, British
Columbia — Megan
Rapinoe strolled around
taking selfies, occasionally
sipping bubbly with her
teammates and trying to
balance the Women’s World
Cup championship trophy
on her head.
A day after the United
States claimed its third
Women’s World Cup title,
the party was still going on
in Vancouver on Monday.
“I’m one star heavier, one
year older,” said Rapinoe,
who turned 30 years old
on Sunday. “It’s better, I
think. I can’t even explain
it. Of course all of the hard
work and everything for
it to culminate in this and
share it with this group
that we spend so much
time together with is just
incredible.”
For a number of players, the realization was
just beginning to set it of
their accomplishment in
beating Japan 5-2 for the
Americans’ first World Cup
title since 1999.
Working on little sleep
after a night of celebrating
with family, friends and
fans — a lot of “smiles,
a lot of screaming, a lot
of dancing,” according to
Julie Johnston — the U.S.
team took part in a special
event put on by Fox Sports.
Players received their first
jerseys that included the
third star above the crest,
the latest title adding the
ones earned in 1991 and
‘99.
It was a celebration filled
with about 1,000 American
fans surrounding the set
overlooking Coal Harbor
on the Vancouver waterfront.

“It hasn’t honestly
sunk in. It really hasn’t,”
American head coach Jill
Ellis said. “You’re on this
media thing and doing all
this, but at some point it
will sink in.”
Perhaps no player was
coming to grips with her
newfound stardom more
than Carli Lloyd, whose hat
trick in the first 16 minutes
gave the Americans a 4-0
lead. Lloyd went from
being one of the top female
soccer players in America
to one of the country’s
biggest sports stars in less
than two hours. She was
tweeted at by President
Barack Obama and even
had her Wikipedia page
changed briefly to say her
position was “President of
the United States.”
If Lloyd believed she still
had some anonymity in
the United States before,
there’s a good chance most
of that is gone now.
“I think it’s definitely
gone to another level,”
Lloyd said. “I’m not sure
I’m ready for that, but it’s
great.”
Lloyd later joked she
would love to find a beach
to take a break.
“I’m pretty mentally
zapped right now. I would
love to not think about anything,” she said.
Part of the reason that
facelessness might be gone
is the record ratings the
American women set. The
match was seen by 26.7
million viewers on Fox and
NBC’s Spanish-language
Telemundo, the networks
said Monday.
Fans back home were
engaged and they were
rewarded with the first title
for the U.S. in 16 years.
“I think every team that

by Kansas City (7.5),

An average of 232,000
