.;, ~" ~ -~·T,a~liog lh,e proposal ~o join with Mtddle•: ~ ~· m, buying mecbamcal street cleaning
' " ·,
.~lpment by Pomeroy council Monday mght
.;-~, ',J!Ius,t have come as a mild shock to a number
:·t;~qf .Pomeroy afld Middleport folks who had
1
\;
~n lookln~ forward to cleaner streets in the
~ ~ar future.
•
(.
:.~
As one councilman put it Tuesday, who pre,, fers to re111 ain unnamed, "The street cleaner
question, so far as buying it with Middleport
IS concerned, is dead "

Surprise may anse from the widely held
bilpression that both counc1ls had unofficially
co~curred on the proposal. It wasn't so.
As the council spokesman described the
action Monday night, when the group faced
a vote el whether to put up or shut up, they
chose to shut up. There will be no meeting
with Middleport council There will be no cobperatlve effort between the !"NO towns this
time.

,The couhcils will have to wait for another
opportunity to jom hands with M:lddleport.'
Honest objections to the joint pprchase
were held l;ly at least three Pomeroy council·
men One~ believed simply to be o~posed
to buying street ~qulpment, being convinced
the town does not need it
At least tw~ others had clear thought-out
rea~ons why JOint purchase, operation,
m~mtenance of a mecham~al st~eet cleaner
m1ght be cumbersome and m~dVIsab)e
Apparently a cleM maJortty remains on
Pomeroy ~ouncil to proceed with 'purchase of
such eq'ul~fueilt by Pomeroy alone Middleport couni!ll' spokesmen have been reported
In favor oll';:oeeeding alone, if they can find
the money, regatdless of Pomeroy going
along or not
.If either town.'obtains the equipment it is
quite certain the other won't Because which·
ever owns it first probably would offer to
lease it to the other.

.;, ~" ~ -~·T,a~liog lh,e proposal ~o join with Mtddle•: ~ ~· m, buying mecbamcal street cleaning
' " ·,
.~lpment by Pomeroy council Monday mght
.;-~, ',J!Ius,t have come as a mild shock to a number
:·t;~qf .Pomeroy afld Middleport folks who had
1
\;
~n lookln~ forward to cleaner streets in the
~ ~ar future.
•
(.
:.~
As one councilman put it Tuesday, who pre,, fers to re111 ain unnamed, "The street cleaner
question, so far as buying it with Middleport
IS concerned, is dead "

Surprise may anse from the widely held
bilpression that both counc1ls had unofficially
co~curred on the proposal. It wasn't so.
As the council spokesman described the
action Monday night, when the group faced
a vote el whether to put up or shut up, they
chose to shut up. There will be no meeting
with Middleport council There will be no cobperatlve effort between the !"NO towns this
time.

,The couhcils will have to wait for another
opportunity to jom hands with M:lddleport.'
Honest objections to the joint pprchase
were held l;ly at least three Pomeroy council·
men One~ believed simply to be o~posed
to buying street ~qulpment, being convinced
the town does not need it
At least tw~ others had clear thought-out
rea~ons why JOint purchase, operation,
m~mtenance of a mecham~al st~eet cleaner
m1ght be cumbersome and m~dVIsab)e
Apparently a cleM maJortty remains on
Pomeroy ~ouncil to proceed with 'purchase of
such eq'ul~fueilt by Pomeroy alone Middleport couni!ll' spokesmen have been reported
In favor oll';:oeeeding alone, if they can find
the money, regatdless of Pomeroy going
along or not
.If either town.'obtains the equipment it is
quite certain the other won't Because which·
ever owns it first probably would offer to
lease it to the other.
