Economy In Trouble-IT wlll come as a surprise to many that
the three fourths of our total debt In
this country is owed by businesses and in·
dividuals, and that only the remaining
one fourth is owed by the government,
both national and local. We are going
even deeper in debt according to a survey by one of the leading insurance com·
panieo. They estimate that over the past
live years the total debt of people Jiv.
ing In this country has increased at an
average of 200 million a day. During the
past year that figure spurted up to the
255 million per day mark, but 11 would
appear on the surface that it has slowed
down a little in the current years.
The experts claim that this situation
has con! dbuted largely to the spectacular expansion. and is at the same time
adding to our worries of what the future holds. One of the alarming features
Is that for each dollar of increase in an·
nual output of goods and services anoth·
er two dollars is added to our debts. We
all recognize the ability of American
credit system to speed up economic
growth, and there is also that tendency
to promote an inflation and bust cycle,
but It has a lure for many in that turns
promise to pay Into instant cash money.
Billions of dollars borrowed swell the
money supply and brings about a ~e
mand for goods and services, buLifie!: ·
ha.ye a danger in th~se unexjNiited
thmgs that might happen. However, the
total soared to nine billlon last year, and
borrowers continued to have an excellent record of payment.
One of the results of this easy credit
Is not always known to those who so

blithely enter its cycle. From 1955 to
1965 penonal bankruptcies more than
tripled from 51,000 to 163,000 in 1965.
The total this year is expected to reach
180,000. Another danger sign on the
horizon is the fact that the Keynesian
system that we and many other countries have adopted is collapsing. The the·
ory was that we could end depressions
and fluctuations in business cycles by
public spending, deficit financing and
taxation. The exl'"rts who follow this
pattern in directmg our economy are ·
finding out that even the best laid plaruJ
backfire. In January the economic report to the President and his economic
advisors stated that 20 years of experience had 'demonstrated our ability to
avoid ruinous inflations and severe depressions. Shortly after that statement
was issued something went wrong.

On the basis of that repurt the
W.hite House urged a modestly restric·
tive new tax program. ·which was quickly passed. It washed out last year's ex·
cise tax relief, and provided for a speed·
up of payments of corporate and personal income tax liabilities. Since that time
many things have happened that were
not supposed to take place. There is now
talk of mcreased taxes to fight inflation.
The President baa suddenly expressed
grave concern over the cost of living,
and with the elfect of tbe ·Viet Nam War,
questions are being raised as to whether
we have a tn1e grasp of controlling our
economy, which was so simple to believe
just a few months ago. ThiS all goes to
show that the experts aee not endowed
with wisdom to solve all problems. There
seems to be ofily one clear solution. and
that iJ to hold down federal spending,
and there Is a definite need to find new
ways to truly take the economic pulse of
the nation.-

average of 200 million a day. During the
past year that figure spurted up to the
255 million per day mark, but 11 would
appear on the surface that it has slowed
down a little in the current years.
The experts claim that this situation
has con! dbuted largely to the spectacular expansion. and is at the same time
adding to our worries of what the future holds. One of the alarming features
Is that for each dollar of increase in an·
nual output of goods and services anoth·
er two dollars is added to our debts. We
all recognize the ability of American
credit system to speed up economic
growth, and there is also that tendency
to promote an inflation and bust cycle,
but It has a lure for many in that turns
promise to pay Into instant cash money.
Billions of dollars borrowed swell the
money supply and brings about a ~e
mand for goods and services, buLifie!: ·
ha.ye a danger in th~se unexjNiited
thmgs that might happen. However, the
total soared to nine billlon last year, and
borrowers continued to have an excellent record of payment.
One of the results of this easy credit
Is not always known to those who so

blithely enter its cycle. From 1955 to
1965 penonal bankruptcies more than
tripled from 51,000 to 163,000 in 1965.
The total this year is expected to reach
180,000. Another danger sign on the
horizon is the fact that the Keynesian
system that we and many other countries have adopted is collapsing. The the·
ory was that we could end depressions
and fluctuations in business cycles by
public spending, deficit financing and
taxation. The exl'"rts who follow this
pattern in directmg our economy are ·
finding out that even the best laid plaruJ
backfire. In January the economic report to the President and his economic
advisors stated that 20 years of experience had 'demonstrated our ability to
avoid ruinous inflations and severe depressions. Shortly after that statement
was issued something went wrong.

On the basis of that repurt the
W.hite House urged a modestly restric·
tive new tax program. ·which was quickly passed. It washed out last year's ex·
cise tax relief, and provided for a speed·
up of payments of corporate and personal income tax liabilities. Since that time
many things have happened that were
not supposed to take place. There is now
talk of mcreased taxes to fight inflation.
The President baa suddenly expressed
grave concern over the cost of living,
and with the elfect of tbe ·Viet Nam War,
questions are being raised as to whether
we have a tn1e grasp of controlling our
economy, which was so simple to believe
just a few months ago. ThiS all goes to
show that the experts aee not endowed
with wisdom to solve all problems. There
seems to be ofily one clear solution. and
that iJ to hold down federal spending,
and there Is a definite need to find new
ways to truly take the economic pulse of
the nation.-
