Unborn Child's Normalcy

Although it was formerly
impossible to tell whether a
child would be normal until
after it was born, a technique
has now been worked out for
making such a determination
after about 12 weeks of pregnancy. This involves the re~
atively simple process of inserting a needle into lhe protective sac In which the embryo .is developing and withdrawmg a small sample of'the
surrounding amlotic fluid.

Free-floating cells cast off
by the skin of the embryo are
examined microscopicaUy and
the chromosomes in the cells
are studied. These rlbbonllke
strands carry the complete
hereditary pattern of the developing infant. If the chromosomes appear to be normal,
a normal baby can be expected. On the other hand, certain
abnormal arrangements of
the chromOSOIIIeS Indicate
mongolism and various
