of the SHS Yearbook Staff. She
has also been her class president for two years. She plans
on studying education in college and becoming a teacher.

MASON, W.Va. — It’s
been nearly 18 months
since work began by local
and state officials to get
the lights on the Bridge of
Honor connecting Mason
and Pomeroy, Ohio, restored
to their former splendor, and
now there seems to be some
lights at the end of the tunnel.
Since the bridge was
constructed, more than 40
of the lights have stopped
illuminating. This caused the
West Virginia Department of
Transportation (WVDOT)
to make the decision early in
2015 to simply cut the breaker
to the decorative lights.
Last week, West Virginia
13th District Delegate Scott
Cadle (R-Mason) said he has
been told by representatives
from WVDOT that testing has
been completed on the lights.
The conclusion was that it
was the heat from the bulbs
causing the light covers to
burst, and not vandals as first
thought.
Cadle said the bulb heat,
which reached in excess of
200 degrees, caused pressure
that could not escape because
of the covers, and in turn
caused the lights to break.
Brent Walker, director of
communications for WVDOT,
said recently, “We are dealing
with the lighting issues and
should have them addressed
soon.”
Cadle, who has been
instrumental since March
2014 in keeping the issue
at the forefront, said the
problem was heightened
because the company that
first sold the lights went out
of business. He stated the
manufacturer that took over
the company is now trying
to design a new cover. The
cover will allow the pressure
to release, but also keep dirt,
water and salt out of the
lighting mechanism.
“This is a cheaper route
than replacing all of the light
fixtures,” Cadle added.
Perry Varnadoe, director
of Meigs County Economic
Development, expressed his
appreciation for all the work
being done to get the lights
back on.
“It’s really a centerpiece
for Pomeroy, Middleport and
Mason,” he stated. “When

THEIR VIEW

Preserving
military legacy
Throughout our nation’s history, Ohioans have
served bravely in the military to protect our way
of life here at home.
Today, Ohio is home to more than 850,000 veterans, and we owe these remarkable individuals a
great deal of gratitude. There is no
better way to honor the sacrifices
of members of the armed forces and
their families than by preserving
Ohio’s proud military tradition.
The Ohio History Connection, in
coordination with the Ohio Department of Veterans Services and the
Ryan
Franklin County Veterans Services
Smith
Commission, is requesting donaContributing tions of military memorabilia from
Columnist
past and current members of the
military and their families. Every
service member has an important
story to tell, and everyday objects of personal
significance such as photographs, letters and
keepsakes go a long way toward preserving Ohio’s
military history for future generations.
The Ohio History Connection is in particular
need of items from the Korean War, the Vietnam
War, and recent conflicts in the Persian Gulf, Iraq
and Afghanistan. Additionally, they are looking
for items related to the role of women in military
service.
The donated objects will be displayed at an
exhibit in the new Ohio Veterans Memorial Museum being constructed in Columbus, or at one of
more than 50 sites that the Ohio History Connection operates throughout the state.
As our state continues to thrive moving into the
future, it is important that we remember the past.
I encourage my constituents to contribute to this
important initiative with the goal of preserving
Ohio’s military legacy.

The leaders of Iran have made

yet we trust them to self-inspect

way to obtain a nuclear weapon
would endanger our national security and the security of our allies
in the region, and this administration has failed to protect the world
from the threat of a nuclear Iran.
We must say no to the Iran
deal — no to a nuclear Iran, no to
capitulating to this administration,
and no to threatening our allies.
This agreement isn’t a choice
between war and peace — it’s a
choice between turning a blind eye
to a nuclear Iran or standing our

TODAY IN HISTORY...
Today is Tuesday, September 15, the 258th day
of 2015. There are 107
days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in
History:
On September 15,
1940, during the World
War II Battle of Britain,
the tide turned as the
Royal Air Force inflicted
heavy losses upon the
Luftwaffe.
On this date:
In 1789, the U.S.
Department of Foreign
Affairs was renamed the
Department of State.
In 1857, William Howard Taft — who served as
President of the United
States and as U.S. chief
justice — was born in
Cincinnati.
In 1890, English mystery writer Agatha Christie was born in Torquay.
In 1935, the Nuremberg
Laws deprived German
Jews of their citizenship.
In 1950, during the Korean War, United Nations
forces landed at Incheon in
the south and began their

drive toward Seoul.
In 1955, the novel “Lolita,” by Vladimir Nabokov, was first published in
Paris.
In 1963, four black girls
were killed when a bomb
went off during Sunday
services at the 16th
Street Baptist Church in
Birmingham, Ala. (Three
Ku Klux Klansmen were
eventually convicted for
their roles in the blast.)
In 1965, the TV shows
“Lost in Space” and
“Green Acres” premiered
on CBS.
In 1972, a federal grand
jury in Washington indicted seven men in connection with the Watergate
break-in.
In 1985, Nike began

(it was at this gig that

Lennon first met Paul
McCartney).
In 2000, the 2000 Summer Olympics opened in
Sydney, Australia, with a
seemingly endless parade
of athletes and coaches
and a spectacular display;
Aborigine runner Cathy
Freeman ignited an Olympic ring of fire.
Ten years ago: President George W. Bush,
addressing the nation
from storm-ravaged New
Orleans, acknowledged
the government had failed
to respond adequately
to Hurricane Katrina,
and urged Congress to
approve a massive reconstruction program. Hurricane Ophelia continued
to lash the Outer Banks
of North Carolina with
rain and wind. Producer
Sid Luft, who was credited with reviving the
career of then-wife Judy

Bridge

The majority of the increase
over the years came from the
slip on the Ohio side which
required a major redesign.
The Bridge of Honor ended
up opening to traffic on Dec.

Nearly six years
in the making, the
Ohio Department of
Transportation managed
the project while CJ Mahan

City, Ohio, in a joint venture
with National Engineering
and Contracting Co. from
Strongsville, Ohio. They
each worked on constructing

than a bridge, it’s a destination for folks to come to

A history of the Bridge of Honor:
The original estimate for
the Bridge of Honor was
$45.8 million ($3 million
under the estimate) but
over 118 change orders later
and that price ended up at
$65 million. The original
contract to build the bridge
was signed April 24, 2003,
with the original completion
date being Aug. 31, 2006.

showed that more than 90 percent of the
parents perceived that a healthy lifestyle
for children, including nutritious food in
their diet and getting at least 30 minutes
of physical activity a day, was very important. Also, almost 63 percent of respondents expressed concern about childhood
obesity in Meigs County.
“I think the results are showing that
we as a community are becoming more
and more aware of this important issue,
and are realizing even more how large of
an impact childhood health and wellness
can have on a community,” Juli Simpson,
CFHS program director, Meigs County
Health Department, said. “We’re on the

work to do and need to build on the progress. It takes time. Everyone has a role to
play in helping kids lead healthy lives.”
Over the past few years, the CFHS program has helped fund indoor gardening
curriculums for all three public school districts in Meigs County in an effort to help
instill some of these important concepts
to kids starting at an early age.
“The VeggieU indoor gardening curriculums are great for our schools because
the kids get to literally dig in, get their
hands dirty, grow and maintain various
vegetable plants from the seed up, learn
about nutrition, start a worm farm —
they love that part — all while having fun,
but learning at the same time,” Simpson
said.

Rio Grande’s Luiz Filho moves upfield past Northwestern Ohio’s Tom Mitchinson
during the first half of Saturday night’s game at Rio Auxiliary Field.

RIO GRANDE, Ohio —
The University of Rio Grande
men’s soccer team stormed
to an early lead and survived
the second portion of its “Saturday Night in September”
gauntlet.
Luiz Filho scored a pair of
goals, while Pau Rodriguez
added one goal and a pair of

The RedStorm, who will
host three of the top nine
teams in the NAIA preseason

who received votes in the balloting on successive Saturdays
this month, improved to 6-0
with the victory.
The Racers, last year’s
national runner-up, slipped to
2-2 with the loss.
Filho, a senior from Sao
Paulo, Brazil, gave Rio a lead
it would never relinquish by
hammering home a crossing
pass from sophomore Joao
Paul Antonio (Sao Paulo, Brazil) at the 16:45 mark of the
opening half.
That’s how things stayed until
junior Willian Paulino (Sao
Paulo, Brazil) headed in a corner kick by Rodriguez - a junior
from Barcelona, Spain - just over
11-1/2 minutes into the second
stanza to make it 2-0.

Filho scored his second goal
a little more than four minutes later, blistering a crossing pass from Rodriguez past
UNOH keeper Liam Davies
and upping the lead to 3-0
with 29:22 left to play.
Rodriguez scored the RedStorm’s final goal of the night
with an unassisted marker at
the 74:22 mark of the contest,
while the Racers scored both

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) stiff arms Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam Jones during the first half of an NFL football
game in Oakland, Calif., Sunday.

Cincinnati tears up Oakland, 33-13
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — With
so much attention paid to A.J.
Green on the outside, Andy Dalton
was pleased to get big tight end
Tyler Eifert back to control the
middle of the field.
Eifert caught two touchdown
passes from Dalton in his first
game in more than a year and
Jeremy Hill ran for two scores as
the Cincinnati Bengals spoiled
Jack Del Rio’s coaching debut in
Oakland with a 33-13 win over the
Raiders on Sunday.
Eifert, who had a season-ending
elbow injury in last year’s opener,
caught nine passes for 104 yards to
lead the way for the Bengals.
“We knew that we were going
to have some chances with some
of the looks that we were getting
and he was in the right spot, right
time and he made some really good
plays for us,,” Dalton said. “It’s
what we expect from him. That’s
what we missed on last year, but
just happy to have him back.”
While the opener went as
planned for the Bengals (1-0), it
was a nightmare for the Raiders
(0-1).
Oakland lost starting quarterback Derek Carr to a hand injury
in the second quarter and was held
scoreless until midway through
the fourth quarter in Del Rio’s first
game as coach.
“That’s a very disappointing,
embarrassing effort,” Del Rio said.
“I take full responsibility. We’ll get
it turned around and corrected.”

The tone was set right from the
start as the Raiders went threeand-out on their first possession
— the eighth straight season they
began with a three-and-out or turnover. Dalton then moved the ball
easily on an 11-play drive capped
by Hill’s 3-yard score on fourthand-1.
Dalton frequently found the
middle of the field open against a
Raiders defense that lost starting
safety Nate Allen to a knee injury
in the first half. Dalton hit Eifert
on scoring strikes in the closing
seconds of the first half and then
late in the third quarter to make it
30-0, driving Oakland fans to boo
or head to the exits.
Here are some other takeaways
from the Bengals win in Oakland:
HUE’S HOMECOMING: Bengals offensive coordinator Hue
Jackson soaked it all during the
pregame warmups in his first
trip back to Oakland since being
fired by the Raiders following
the 2011 season. Jackson led the
Raiders to an 8-8 record that year
but missed out on the playoffs
when Oakland lost the final game
at home to San Diego. Jackson
was fired after owner Mark Davis
hired Reggie McKenzie as general
manager.
“It’s satisfying to win,” Jackson
said. “This place will always be
special to me because of Al Davis.
Coach Davis was tremendous to
me, and gave me an opportunity
with this organization. But at the

end of the day, I work for the Bengals.”
ALDON’S DEBUT: Aldon Smith
got on the field for extensive time
just two days after signing with the
Raiders. The talented but troubled
pass rusher was released by San
Francisco on Aug. 7 after his fifth
run-in with the law and signed
with Oakland on Friday. He had
one solo tackle, one assist and one
quarterback pressure.
“I’m just excited to be here and
have this chance with this team
and be a part of the guys that work
hard and an organization that looks
out for its players,” he said. “Just a
fresh start.”
PACMAN’S PUSH: The game
was chippy with several personal
fouls with the most blatant coming in the second quarter. Adam
Jones ripped off the helmet of
Oakland receiver Amari Cooper
and slammed his head against it.
Austin Howard, who was already
called for holding on the play, then
shoved Jones as a mild skirmish
broke out. The penalties wiped out
a 60-yard run by Jamize Olawale.
“I’m here to play football,” Jones
said. “I don’t back down from
nobody and I’m not out there trying to start anything. I’m just having fun playing football.”
OAKLAND FIRST: The Bengals
finally won a game in Oakland after
losing in their 10 previous trips to
the Coliseum. Their only previous
road win against the Raiders came
in Los Angeles in 1988.

New York Jets breeze past Cleveland Browns, 31-10
EAST RUTHERFORD,
N.J. (AP) — Brandon
Marshall turned a turnover into a takeaway and
a huge momentum swing
for the New York Jets.
Shortly after Cleveland
took a 7-0 lead Sunday,
Fitzpatrick’s throw to
Marshall was picked off
by Tashaun Gipson. But
the Jets’ wide receiver
ripped the ball out of
Gipson’s hands for a
fumble recovery that gave
New York the ball at the
Browns 9.
“To me, that was the
play of the game,” Jets
coach Todd Bowles said.
Moments later, Chris
Ivory ran up the middle
for a 10-yard tying TD.
Fitzpatrick finished with
two touchdown passes
and Ivory ran for two
scores, giving the Jets
(1-0) a 31-10 victory in
Bowles’ regular-season
debut.
The Jets’ offense
started slow, and things
appeared to be going the
Browns’ way when Gipson stepped in front of
Fitzpatrick’s underthrown
pass. Refusing to give
up on the play, Marshall
reached in and ended up
with the ball.
“I definitely owe him
a soda pop for that one,”
Fitzpatrick said.
Gipson said he wanted

to try to get the Browns
(0-1) in better field position and possibly take
control of the game —
when suddenly he no
longer had the ball.
“That has never happened to me,” Gipson
said.
Marshall, in his first
game with the Jets after
being acquired from the
Bears in March, also had
six catches for 62 yards
and a touchdown.
Here are some other
things to know from the
Jets’ victory over the
Browns:
HERE’S JOHNNY:
After Josh McCown left
with a concussion late in
the first quarter, Johnny
Manziel came in and had
an up-and-down day.
He finished 13 of 24
for 182 yards, including
a 54-yard touchdown to
Travis Benjamin. He also
led the Browns with 35
yards rushing on five carries. But he also lost two
fumbles and threw an
interception.
“I can’t turn it over,”
Manziel said when asked
what he needed to do differently.
McCown was hurt
when he was hit by Calvin Pryor and Demario
Davis when he dived for
the goal line on thirdand-goal from the Jets

14. McCown must go
through the league’s concussion protocol, leaving
the Browns’ quarterback
situation uncertain.
SCARY MOMENT:
Jets rookie linebacker
Lorenzo Mauldin was
taken to a hospital after
being strapped to a board
and carted off the field
in the fourth quarter. A
few hours later, the Jets
announced Mauldin has
a concussion — but no
neck injury, as initially
feared — and was hospitalized overnight for
observation. The team
added that Mauldin was
awake and had feeling in
all of his extremities.
