Ohio to receive grants Holzer donates fetal monitor
Contributed Article

COLUMBUS — Last
week, the U.S. Department of Labor announced
the award of $5 million in
grants to support registered apprenticeship programs across the country.
As part of the grant
award, Ohio workers will
benefit from the Industrial
Manufacturing Technician hybrid manufacturing
apprenticeship in partnership with unions and their
employers. It will promote
the growth of the manufacturing sector and advance
the skills of production
workers. The AFL-CIO
Working for America
Institute is partnering

m_j^@eXi\ehj^[<kjkh["W
national workforce intermediary, in the collaborative project.
“We are proud of the
professional skills that
Ohio union apprenticeship
programs provide to workers,” said Ohio AFL-CIO
President Tim Burga.
“Apprenticeships are an
important pathway to
jobs that provide working
people with wages to sustain a family. As we look at
innovative ways to combat
income inequality and to
raise wages for all workers,
apprenticeship programs
should be at the center of
that discussion,” he said.
Burga also expressed his

gratitude to Sen. Sherrod
Brown, who helped make
the new apprenticeship
program a reality.
“Once again, Sen. Brown
has exemplified what it
means to fight for the
working people of Ohio,”
Burga said. “Sen. Brown
continues to fight for
Ohio’s manufacturing sector and all its workers so
that we can compete in the
global economy.”
The apprenticeship
grants are part of a larger
push by the Obama administration to highlight the
need for affordable, quality career and education
choices for students and
workers.

The Gallia County Health Department was the recipient of a fetal monitor given by Holzer Health
System. Since expectant mothers who use the health department’s services also visit the
hospital, Holzer staff said they wanted to ensure that the health department had all the tools
necessary to monitor the health and well-being of moms and their babies, which are eventually
delivered at Holzer. Instead of traveling between the two facilities, expectant mothers can receive
all the necessary care and tests at the health department — at least until it’s time for baby to
arrive. Patty Toler, RN, project director for the health department, said the health department
offers a full range of services as the hospital and accepts all patients regardless of health care
coverage status. Pictured, from left, are Dr. Gerald Vallee, Gallia County health commissioner and

THEIR VIEW

Driving myths
By Julie E. Lee
Guest Columnist

Many widespread beliefs about safe driving
rules are tried and true, such as buckle up, always
come to a complete stop and use your turn signal.
But some of the best driving practices are trickier.
For example, how often do you need to change
your oil? Is it really every 3,000 miles as many of
us have been told time and time again?
Over the years, technological advances, crash
simulators and expert analysis have debunked
many common driving myths. However, many of
us are still operating under the assumptions we
learned when we first got behind the wheel.
AARP Driver Safety sheds light on these four
common driving myths and mistakes, to help you
stay safe on the road—and save on unnecessary
expenses.
1. Myth #1: Change your oil every 3,000
miles. While vehicle maintenance is critical to
driver safety, you no longer need to change your
oil diligently at the 3,000-mile mark. Modern
engines and synthetic motor oils have changed
the frequency with which you need to change
your oil. Most cars need a change between 5,000
and 10,000 miles. Check your owner’s manual
to determine how long your vehicle should go
between changes.
2. Myth #2: Warm up your car before driving.
When the weather outside is frightful, many of
us crank on our car engines for a few minutes
before getting on the road. Although it may
make the interior of your car nice and toasty,
“warming up” your car in winter has no technical
benefits. According to the Discovery Channel,
modern vehicles are equipped to start in cold
temperatures, and idling for less than a minute
before driving is sufficient. Idling for longer
wastes fuel and can cause unnecessary wear and
tear on your engine.
3. Myth #3: Fill up with premium every once
in a while. While most of us stick to unleaded
fuel, some may believe that it is a good idea to
fill up your tank with a higher octane fuel every
now and then because it is cleaner and will
make your car run more smoothly. But thanks
to mechanical advancements, using high octane
fuel is an unnecessary expense for most modern
vehicles. Engines run based on the controlled
explosion of gasoline and, back in the day, gasoline
would occasionally explode at the wrong time.
According to the Discovery Channel, this caused
the car to have poor timing and run irregularly.
Higher octane fuel was invented to overcome
this problem, but modern cars have gone a step
further. Nowadays, a knock sensor prevents
gasoline from combusting at the wrong time, so
depending on your vehicle’s make and model, you
may no longer need to fill up with more expensive
fuel…ever!
4. Myth #4: Red cars get more speeding tickets.
There are many rumors about car color and its
effect on things like car accidents and speeding
tickets. For example, black cars are thought to be
more likely to be involved in accidents at night
because they are harder to see, and drivers with
red cars supposedly get pulled over more often
than others—perhaps because they are more eyecatching or because the color incites speeding.
According to a study by Snopes.com, drivers of
gray cars actually garnered more speeding tickets
than other vehicle colors. White cars received
fewer speeding tickets than they should have
based on vehicle population, and red cars received
no more speeding tickets than any other group.
For more tips on how to stay safe on the road,
consider taking a driver improvement course, such
as the AARP Smart Driver™ Course, available
in a classroom or online setting, in both English
and Spanish. In some states, you may even be
eligible for a multi-year insurance discount upon
completion of the course.*
For more information, visit www.aarp.org/
safedriving or call 1-888-AARP-NOW (1-888-2277669).
*The insurance premium discount is not
available in all states for the online or the
classroom versions of the course. Please consult
your insurance agent for further details.

with an inspiring set of beliefs
about how a nation ought to govern itself, but they also ignored

Representative democracy by its
nature is always a work in progress; we never really get the balance between liberty and justice
exactly right.
This is worth remembering at
the moment, when the problems
we confront seem so overwhelming
and our institutions are under so
much strain. The problems they
have to resolve — the outsized
role of money in politics, excessive
partisanship, the sheer complexity
of the policy challenges we face —
are daunting, but that doesn’t mean
representative government itself
should be called into question.
In fact, it is our great strength.
It protects against arbitrary
authority, strives for justice,
hears our varied and conflicting
opinions before it acts, and moderates tensions among competing
interests. It works in a measured
fashion that tends — over time
— to encourage policymakers to
find consensus. It is the form of
government that, when allowed
to work properly, is most likely to
lead to wise policy, firmly rooted
in the consent of the ordinary people on whose shoulders it rests.

Lady Tornadoes blast Belpre
By Alex Hawley

ahawley@civitasmedia.com

RACINE, Ohio — Just
the bounce back win the
Lady Tornadoes needed.
The Southern volleyball
team, which suffered its
first Tri-Valley Conference
Hocking Division loss of
the season on Monday, got
back in the win column on
Tuesday — defeating gust
Belpre in straight games.
Southern (7-2, 3-1 TVC
Hocking) allowed just one
service point in the opening game and rolled to a
25-12 victory, which ended
with seven straight service
points by senior Ali Deem.
The Purple and Gold
never trailed in the second
game and they cruised to a
25-9 triumph, which ended
with four straight service
points by Deem.

10 straight service points

by SHS junior Kamryn
Smith pushed the Lady
Tornadoes to a 25-11 victory and a 3-0 win.
“After losing last night
in the fashion that we did,
it was tough to come out
tonight and have that energy,” second year SHS head
coach Chris Carroll said.
“I told the girls ‘we have to
get refocused and get back
on track’. We’ll take the
next few days to get ready
for a tough week next
week. We need to focus
more on some of the little
things we need to work on
instead of just a win or a
loss.”
Deem led the Lady
Tornadoes service attack
with 19 points, followed
by Smith with 10 and
Hannah Hill with eight.
Marlee Maynard and
Brandy Porter both marked
four points, Brynn Harris

Trimble tops Eastern Lady Eagles
By Bryan Walters
bwalters@civitasmedia.com

TUPPERS PLAINS, Ohio
— The quest for 400 starts
where most of the first 300
originated.
After picking up his 300th
career volleyball victory over
Southern just 24 hours earlier,
Trimble coach Howie Caldwell
secured win number 301 in
another old stomping ground
Tuesday night following a
25-8, 24-26, 25-11, 25-19 decision over host Eastern in a
Tri-Valley Conference Hocking
Division matchup at the Eagle’s
Nest in Meigs County.
Caldwell — who amassed
224 victories, seven regional
appearances and a state berth
in 2011 while leading the
Green and Gold — watched
as his Lady Tomcats (8-2, 5-0
TVC Hocking) stayed atop the
league standings with the spirited 3-1 match triumph.
The Lady Eagles (5-5, 2-3)
put together a stellar Game 2
rally after trailing 23-20, but
ultimately never led the rest of
the way. There were four ties
and five lead changes in the
opening game, as well as 11
ties and a dozen lead changes
in the nail-biting second game.
Kelsey Johnson led the
EHS service attack with eight
points, followed by Morgain
Little with seven points and
Elayna Bissell with six points.
Sidney Cook added four points,
while Morgan Baer and Katlyn
Barber respectively contributed
three points and one point.
Barber led the hosts with 12
kills, five blocks and 13 digs,
while Baer dished out a teamhigh 22 assists. Johnson also
added 11 digs and Makenzie
Brooks had two blocks.
Annalisa Boano had nine
kills in the setback, followed by
Little with five kills and Johnson with three kills.
Taya Lackey paced THS
with 22 service points, which
included 12 straight points in
Game 1 that turned a slim 8-5
lead into a comfortable 20-5
cushion. Lauren Riley and
Nikki Kish also scored 13 and
10 points, respectively, for the
victors.
Roughly 75 percent of
Caldwell’s victories came
as head coach at Eastern.
Caldwell also picked up another 69 victories while coaching
at Southern in the mid-to-late
1990s.
Eastern returns to action
Thursday when it travels to
Belpre for a TVC Hocking
match at 7:15 p.m.
