Ohio deer-gun
season continues
Staff Report

OHIO VALLEY — Ohio’s 2015 deer-gun season
continues Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 28-29, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
During the Dec. 28-29 firearm season, all hunters
(except waterfowl hunters) must wear a vest, coat,
jacket or coveralls that are either solid hunter orange
or camouflage hunter orange. A hunter orange hat
or cap is a great safety addition, but does not satisfy
legal requirements.
Hunters may use 10, 12, 16, 20, 28 or .410-gauge
shotguns using slugs; handguns with five-inch minimum barrels, using straight-walled cartridges of .357
caliber or larger; muzzleloading rifles of at least .38
caliber or larger; longbows or crossbows. Straightwalled cartridge rifles are legal in the following
calibers: .357 Magnum, .357 Maximum, .38 Special,
.375 Super Magnum, .375 Winchester, .38-55, .41
Long Colt, .41 Magnum, .44 Special, .44 Magnum,
.444 Marlin, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .45 Long Colt, .45
Winchester Magnum, .45 Smith & Wesson, .450
Marlin, .454 Casull, .460 Smith & Wesson, .45-70,
.45-90, .45-110, .475 Linebaugh, .50-70, .50-90, .50100, .50-110 and .500 Smith and Wesson.
Shotguns and straight-walled cartridge rifles in
approved calibers cannot have more than three
shells.
Hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30
minutes past sunset for all deer seasons.
Additional details about deer hunting rules are
contained in the 2015-2016 Ohio Hunting Regulations, available where licenses are sold or at wildohio.gov
The ODNR Division of Wildlife is in the process
of revising Ohio’s population goals and is asking
hunters that receive the survey to help by completing and returning their survey as soon as possible.
Hunters for this year’s survey were randomly selected from the list of hunters who purchased a license
and deer permit by Nov. 16. Landowner surveys
have already been completed, and hunter surveys
were mailed a few weeks ago. Public input is an
important part of Ohio’s deer management program,
and survey participants are asked to complete and
return their surveys to ensure that hunters have a
clear voice in helping to decide the direction of deer
management in Ohio.
ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and
protection of our natural resources for the benefit of
all. Visit the ODNR website at ohiodnr.gov.

A historic Mason house will be opened to the public for a holiday home tour between 4-7 p.m . Saturday. The house, located at 141
Adamsville Road, is owned by Craig and Christine Roush, and is known by locals as one of the Gold Brothers’ or “twin” houses. Pictured

they purchased it.

Mason home open for open house

MASON, W.Va. — A holiday
open house and home tour will
be held at a historic Mason home,
after the owners have spent
nearly two years remodeling and
refurbishing it.
Craig and Christine Roush will
conduct the event between 4-7
p.m . Saturday at 141 Adamsville
Road. The house was built in the
early 1990s and is known by locals
as one of the Gold Brothers’ or
“twin” houses. The homes were
built nearly exactly alike, although
they were mirror images of each
other. The second house was razed
a number of years ago, after it was
damaged by an explosion.

14 and 16 truckloads of trash were
removed.
The couple decided early on not
to completely renovate the house.
They wanted it to stay as original
as possible.
“The woodwork is why we
bought the house,” Craig said.
Not wanting to sand the floors
down to a new finish, Christine,
along with family and friends, got
on their hands and knees, scraping
old varnish off with razor blades.
The end result allowed the couple
to maintain the character and
patina of the floors.
Two sets of massive, original
solid wood pocket doors are
located in the downstairs. There

Is marijuana the
Holy Grail for
pain medication?
Dr. Lynn R. Webster
Guest Columnist

Is marijuana the Holy Grail for pain medication?
You might think so by reading the popular press.
An ideal drug therapy is one that is highly effective for a multitude of pain disorders and has low
to no toxicity regardless of duration of exposure.
Marijuana flirts with this profile—but it is a Trojan horse.
Depending on where you live, it may be legal
for you to get a prescription for marijuana. But
before you rush to your doctor’s office with your
request, remember that all drugs have risks. It is a
clinician’s responsibility to evaluate the potential
benefit, relative to the potential risk, of each drug
option. Marijuana products have fewer risks than
opioids. Still, marijuana should be used judiciously
and with awareness that it could be harmful.
Here are five things to think about:
šCWh_`kWdW_iWfbWdj"dejWZhk]"WdZ_j^Wi
many active chemicals. We need to know which of
the chemicals are therapeutic, and for which specific pain diseases, and at what doses.
šIec[f[efb[][jWZZ_Yj[Z$7icWbbf[hY[djage of people who use marijuana get hooked on
it. The younger you start, the more likely you are
to become addicted. Children or adolescents who
use marijuana are more likely than most adults to
develop an addiction.
šJ[jhW^oZheYWddWX_debJ>9Wbj[hiXhW_d
function. There was once a lot of hype, fed by Hollywood, about how marijuana can drive a person
insane. Most of that was exaggeration and even
false. It’s true, however, that tetrahydrocannabinol
can override your ability to feel sensation, reduce
your access to memories, restrict your ability to
move, and even trigger psychosis. Marijuana users
today are at greater risk of side effects than those
in the past because of the increased potency of
THC in recent years.
šBed]#j[hcki[YWdX[fheXb[cWj_Y$Ki_d]cWhijuana over time can cause mental health problems
for many. Even those who do not become addicted
can experience hallucinations and paranoia. Some
users can experience anxiety, depression, and even
suicidal tendencies. Also, teens’ use of marijuana
can interfere with the healthy development of
their brain. And for pregnant women, marijuana
use could affect the brain of their fetus.
šCWh_`kWdW_dYh[Wi[i^[WhjWdZXh[Wj^_d]fheXlems. TCH, the same chemical in marijuana that
affects your brain, can also adversely affect your
heart. It has been linked to heart attacks in adults.
Smoking marijuana can lead to many of the same
breathing problems, including lung infections and
coughing, as smoking cigarettes.
The point to remember is that all drugs used to
treat disease, including chronic pain, come with
risks. That means our approach to drug therapy
should be thoughtful and wide eyed, not blind. I
am not making an argument against marijuana but
rather am encouraging greater understanding of
marijuana’s potential risks.
Considering the current opioid crisis, marijuana
may be a safer alternative in some clinical situations. But we must be aware of the potential harm
if it is used. Although marijuana may offer a solution to some people with pain, it is not the Holy
Grail of analgesics.

about people who have an unexpected windfall. The best approach
to sudden money is to go quietly

5. Don’t go on a spending spree.
If you’re lucky enough to receive

not immediately. Involve members
of your financial team in your planning. After any tax or estate issues

to the bar no matter the
weight of the vehicle. This
can help benefit drivers of
motorcycles or scooters,
who often have the issue of
stop lights not recognizing
them because they are not
the size of a vehicle, Rose
said.
“Traffic engineer experts
come out with something
new and we try to work
with them,” Rose said.
“These lights are highly
advanced. It’s not something we see everywhere
across the state.”
An Ohio 143 project is
also in the works, but will
take longer due to the need
for an environmental study
and right-of-way project
development. According to
the latest information, Rose
said the Ohio 143 project
will begin in 2017, with
bids for the project going
out in July of that year.
Teresa Shiflet, a local
resident who helped to
bring attention to the
necessity of the traffic
lights to Rose, expressed
her gratitude and happiness over the completion of
this particular project.
“I’m pleased to see the
progress that ODOT is
making at the intersection
of 124 and 7 and am looking forward to the project
being completed,” she said.
“I’m hoping the lights and
turn lanes will make the
area safer for motorists.
I’ve said it in the past but
I’d like to reiterate my sentiment of thanks to ODOT
for seeing this through to
its completion.”

later, when someone in their

Christine said while there is still
work to be done, it is now their
family’s home and is decorated as
such. While many former owners
filled the home with a Victorian
style, the Roushes have opted for
a more family-oriented primitive
décor.
“I think people will be
surprised,” Christine said.
Craig said he hopes to have
“before and after” photos
displayed during the home tour to
show those who attend what has
been done.

Once they began working, the
couple said people would stop by
and share memories and history
of the house. The Roushes said
they would be stopped in Walmart
or at ballgames and asked if they
were going to hold an open house.
With the holidays approaching,
Craig said they agreed to open
it up while it is decorated for
Christmas.
Craig said he feels somewhat
like it was fate that brought the
family to their home. Years ago,
when the house was auctioned, his
parents Ralph and Sheila Roush
bid on it. The elder couple had
determined how high they would
bid prior to the auction, and

the deficit to 26-24.
The Ironmen took their first lead less than a
minute into the second half, and they pushed the
advantage to 36-32 headed into the finale.
Jackson — which led by as much as six in the
third period — held a 39-34 edge with 6:12 left in
the fourth, but Meigs rallied to tie the game at 39
with 5:04 to play. The Ironmen quickly reestablished the two-point lead, but a Luke Musser trifecta earned Meigs the 42-41 advantage with 3:00
on the fourth quarter clock.
JHS tied the game at 42 from the free throw line,
but MHS senior Colton Lilly sank a two-point field
goal with 1:30 left, giving the Maroon and Gold a
44-42 lead. Meigs sank 3-of-4 free throw attempts
to push its lead to 47-44 with 17 seconds left on the
clock. The Ironmen fired three three-point attempts
in the final eight seconds, but all were missed and
the Marauders claimed the 47-44 win.
Musser sank three triples in the game and led
the Meigs offense with 15 points, followed by Lilly
with 12 points and Kaileb Sheets with 10. Jared
Kennedy posted six points, Tyler Fields added
three, while Dillon Mahr rounded out the Marauder scoring with one point.
The Marauders shot 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from
the free throw line and 17-of-47 (36.2 percent)
from the field, including 4-of-14 (28.6 percent)
from three-point range. As a team MHS had 35
rebounds, 10 assists, five steals, five blocks, 10
fouls and 14 turnovers.
Kennedy led the Maroon and Gold on the
boards with 13 rebounds, followed by Lilly with
nine. Kennedy also posted a team-best four blocks,
while Sheets finished with a team-high three
assists.
Jackson was led by Carson Spohn with 20 points
and Dakota Nichols with 12, followed by Cooper
Donaldson with seven and Kendall Neal with five.
JSH shot 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from the free
throw line and 16-of-47 (34 percent) from the
field, including 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) from beyond
the arc. The Red and White had 27 rebounds, 12
assists, nine steals, one block, 12 fouls and 11
turnovers.
Neal marked team-highs in rebounds with eight
and steals with three, while Donaldson marked
seven boards and five assists. Jackson has now lost
three straight games by a combined six points.
The Marauders will put their unblemished mark
on the line Friday night when they visit 1-7 River
Valley for a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division
showdown.

White Falcons rally past Southern
By Bryan Walters

MASON, W.Va. — On a night in
which Wahama honored one of its
finest, the hosts also provided one
fine finish to commemorate the special occasion.
Trailing 36-20 in the early
moments of the fourth quarter, the
White Falcons made a 20-2 surge
over the final six minutes of regulation and came away with a 40-38
victory over visiting Southern in a
Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division boys basketball contest at the
newly-christened Gary Clark Court
in Mason County.
Wahama honored athletic Hall
of Famer and 40-plus-year sports
writer Gary Clark at halftime for his
numerous contributions to the Bend
Area school by announcing that the
basketball floor, starting on this date
of December 15, would forever be
acknowledged as Gary Clark Court.
That inspiration certainly paid
dividends in the second half, as WHS
(2-1, 2-1 TVC Hocking) outscored
the Tornadoes (0-6, 0-4) by a sizable
33-14 overall margin. Wahama, however, only led for 35 seconds in the
entire contest — including the final

Wildcats outlast South Gallia, 65-59

MERCERVILLE —
Success starts at the charity stripe.
The Waterford boys
basketball team sank
seven free throws in
the final two minutes of
Tuesday night’s Tri-Valley
Conference Hocking Division tilt with host South
Gallia, capping off the
65-59 Wildcat victory.
The Wildcats (3-0, 3-0
TVC Hocking) charged
out to a 9-4 lead midway
through the first quarter,
but the Rebels (4-2, 2-2)
answered with a 10-0 run.
Waterford sank the final
basket of the opening
stanza and cut the deficit
to 14-11.
WHS regained the lead
less than two minutes
into the second quarter,
outscoring South Gallia
7-to-3. After exchanging
the lead two more times,
South Gallia went ahead
22-20 on a three-pointer
with 3:11 left in the half.
The guests tied the game
at 22 with 1:38 remaining, but with just seven
seconds left SGHS reestablished the advantage.
The Wildcats sank a twopointer as the halftime
buzzer sounded and the
teams went into the break
tied at 24.
Waterford stormed out
of the break, scoring the
first 10 points of the second half and establishing
a 34-24 lead with 5:30
remaining in the third
period. Still trailing by
10 points with 3:30 left
in the third, SGHS closed
the canto with a 12-3 run
that trimmed the deficit
to 42-41 headed into the
final.
“The last couple games
we’ve come out flat in the
third quarter,” Waterford
head coach Tom Simms
said. “I stressed to them
‘let’s go out strong,
let’s be positive, let’s be
focused, let’s sit down
and do the little things
right’, they went out and
they did. That’s what got
us the separation and we
stayed that way.”

South Gallia senior Landon Hutchinson dribbles near the high post during the Rebels’ 65-59 loss to
visiting Waterford, Tuesday night in Mercerville.

Howell. “We’re really
playing great defense,
the kids understand that
part. They understand
that when our offense is
not going, our defense is
keeping us in the game.
We have to keep building
on it and making it better, but on offense it has
to be more of a team concept. During the game
we can’t let the other
team slow us down.”
South Gallia’s offense
was led by Joseph Ehman
with 18 points and
Kane Hutchinson with
17, followed by Josh
Henry with 10. Landon
Hutchinson marked nine
points, Curtis Haner
added three, while Dominick Johnson rounded
out two Rebel total with
two points. As a team
SGHS shot 13-of-19
(68.4 percent) from the
free throw line, while
marking 10 assists, 16
steals, three blocks and
19 fouls.
Landon Hutchinson
led the Red and Gold on
the boards with eight
rebounds, followed
by Ehman and Kane
Hutchinson with five
each. Ehman posted
team-highs in assists
with four and steals
with six, while Johnson
blocked two shots. Henry
marked three steals and
one block for the SGHS
defense, while Landon
Hutchinson and Kane
Hutchinson each had two
assists. Kane Hutchinson
accounted for half of
the Rebels’ six trifectas,
while Ehman had two

and Haner added one.
“When you go on the
road in the TVC it is
tough to win,” Simms
said. “Coming to South
Gallia and getting out
with a win is huge.
That’s a talented outfit.
We made some major
mistakes, some unforced
turnovers and we were
fortunate to get out.”
Bryce Hilverding paced
Waterford’s offense with
21 points, followed by
Jordan Welch with 15
and Cody Harris with
13. Isaac Huffman, Tyler
McCutcheon, Wyatt Lang
and Riley Burns each
posted four points to cap
off the WHS scoring.
Waterford hit 13-of-20
(65 percent) free throw
attempts and marked 18
assists, nine steals, one
block and 17 fouls.
Welch marked a gamebest 15 rebounds, while
Huffman, who fouled
out with 2:18 left in
the game, added seven
boards and the Wildcats’
lone block. Welch and
Huffman led WHS with
four assists each, while
Hilverding had a teambest four steals. Hilverding accounted for five of
Waterford’s eight three
pointers, while Harris had
two and Welch sank one.
South Gallia will look
to avenge this loss on
January 26, in Washington County. The Rebels
return to action on Friday when they invade
Miller.

The Wildcats led by
as many as eight points
early in the fourth quarter, but their lead was cut
to 58-54 with 2:09 left
in regulation. WHS hit
7-of-10 free throws over
the final two minutes,
capping off the 65-59 victory.
“We have to grow up
a little bit,” SGHS head
coach Larry Howell said.
“We’ve got six seniors
but they need to be
seniors. I think that’s the
reason why we struggle
to finish close games
right now. They just have
to step up and lead in
those moments.”
Waterford held a
38-to-26 rebounding
advantage in the win,
while shooting 22-of-48
(45.8 percent) from the
field compared to South
Gallia’s 20-of-55 (36.4
percent) shooting performance. South Gallia
won the turnover battle
by a 15-to-27 margin,
and held a narrow 10-to9 edge on the offensive
glass. However, the Rebels shot just 6-of-26 (23.1
percent) from beyond
the arc, while the Wildcats sank 8-of-19 (42.1
