· Health Department Activity Noted
How much d_o we understand what a good deal we, as Meigs
County citizens: get from our local Health Department?
We are going to throw some staHstics straight at you today
Contrary to the usual run-of-mine sort of rigures, these a-re interesting. Th~y spell out dollars in your pocket and health in
your home. It will become apparent to ali readers that Meigs
Con~ty has an active, intensely interested, and dedi<:ated
health department. The figures were compiled by Mrs. Beulah
Strauss, exl!\..~tive secretary of the department and local director of the Red Cross. (U these titles aren't quite righl, Mrs .
Strauss won't quibble, and neither will anyor;te else. Anyliow,
she runs the local Red Cross, and adminlstors heaalth department activities under the direction of Dr. H. M. Boocks, health
commissioner.)
Local taxpayers anted up $12,777.10 In 1955 for services
that would have cost on the open market from doctors, nurses,
holpitals , technicians , and inspectors a total of $36,038. The
difference between that figure paid and in value o' services
received was made up from federal and state subsidies and
from restaurant fee servicing, milk licenses and traller permits.
While the report that follows deals with 1955 activities, department activities in 1956 will parallel it closely. With one
important exception: polio shots given last year totaled 1740.
In 1956 the record will show about 6,000 given,

In 1956 the record will show about 6,000 given,
The detailed work of the department:
Vlslts made by nurses (two n1,1rses, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith
and Miss Bernice Ledtie) to county schools numbered 272
when conferences were held with 672 school personneL
Screenings In schools totaled 2, 782; rechecks on children with
defects, 502; .c hildren referred to doctors , 363; glasses furnished by the Lions club and Crippled Children's Society (avetage

222 students enrolled, 108 received some type of shot. The
other was Central District where out o r 148 pup lis t h ere were
