SPITFIRES FINISH HIGH - Organized softball moved into high gear this IUIJio

of Middleport girls copped second place. The program ·has caused some male eyebrows to rise as distaffs prepared the evening meal encumbered by 'wounds of that
day's battle. An imaginary ··conversation" between the male umpire of a girls' sof~

Voice Of Broadway ••. Reporting
By DOROTHY KILGALLEN

. JI"

;

MISS MIDNIGHT IN LONDON : Pet·
er O'Toole, the marvelous star of "Law·
renee of Arabia," celebrated his 30th
birthday at Buckinghamshire galloping
across the fields with Richard Burton
for a scene in "Becket" and sipping
champagne between takes
Dtckie's celebrated friend was not
present, but her canvas chair, lettered
"Elizabeth Taylor," stood by as a con·
slant reminder that the lady was prob·
ably off having her hair done or getting
in some shopping before the stores clos·
ed for the bank holiday.
Quite obviously Burton and O'Toole
like each other enormously and share a
mutual admiration. Both enjoy fooling
around and making witty remarks when
the cameras are not turned on, but they
switch back into character in seconds
when it's time for action.
O'Toole is not the world's best horse·
man, and he was having trouble reining
in his mount with one hand while hold·
ing aloft a wicked-looking falcon with
the o!her.
At one point Burt~n told him:
"For the Lord's sake, Peter, don't get
yourself killed on your birthday."
O'Toole grinned.
"I must say I prefer camels," he said.
" At least they kneel down and make It
easy for you to get up on them." For the
role of King Henry ll, he is back to his
natural black curly hair (he had it strai·
ghtened and made blond for "Lawrence")
and he looks amusingly Machiavellian.
Burton is older and shorter and thicker
through the waist, bul still enormously
attractive-especially when he speaks.
As the falcons flapped about and clawed
at the gauntlets of the two men, he said,
"These birds are lunatics" - which was
quite apt - and once when he and
O'Toole had come to a bait after another
successful gallop across the grassy
plains, Burton commented:
"I'm tbe Welsh John Wayne."
Studio executives said the picture
wu going along swimmingly because the
two stars worked so well together.

With The Family
Single Leur Faun!

There was just one difficulty.
Burton is so gregarious, such a fascinating talker in the manner of Dylan
Thomas, that they have had to clamp
down on visitors to the set. More than
once their Becket has become so involved in an ~njoyable dialogue that there's
been no more shooting for the rest of
the afternoon.

Prince Philip, who undoubtedly
couldn' t care less, is enjoying a wave of
unpopularity with the Queen's subjects
at the moment.
Two reasons are given by Londoners.
First, they blame him for insisting on
inviting the Greek Royalty to Princess
Alexandra's wedding, an unfortunate
stand in view of the flap over Cypress.
Second, they think he's taken pains
to "snoot" Lord Snowdon, Princess Mar·
garet's husband.
_; However, there exists a hard core of

Voice Of Broadway ••. Reporting
By DOROTHY KILGALLEN

. JI"

;

MISS MIDNIGHT IN LONDON : Pet·
er O'Toole, the marvelous star of "Law·
renee of Arabia," celebrated his 30th
birthday at Buckinghamshire galloping
across the fields with Richard Burton
for a scene in "Becket" and sipping
champagne between takes
Dtckie's celebrated friend was not
present, but her canvas chair, lettered
"Elizabeth Taylor," stood by as a con·
slant reminder that the lady was prob·
ably off having her hair done or getting
in some shopping before the stores clos·
ed for the bank holiday.
Quite obviously Burton and O'Toole
like each other enormously and share a
mutual admiration. Both enjoy fooling
around and making witty remarks when
the cameras are not turned on, but they
switch back into character in seconds
when it's time for action.
O'Toole is not the world's best horse·
man, and he was having trouble reining
in his mount with one hand while hold·
ing aloft a wicked-looking falcon with
the o!her.
At one point Burt~n told him:
"For the Lord's sake, Peter, don't get
yourself killed on your birthday."
O'Toole grinned.
"I must say I prefer camels," he said.
" At least they kneel down and make It
easy for you to get up on them." For the
role of King Henry ll, he is back to his
natural black curly hair (he had it strai·
ghtened and made blond for "Lawrence")
and he looks amusingly Machiavellian.
Burton is older and shorter and thicker
through the waist, bul still enormously
attractive-especially when he speaks.
As the falcons flapped about and clawed
at the gauntlets of the two men, he said,
"These birds are lunatics" - which was
quite apt - and once when he and
O'Toole had come to a bait after another
successful gallop across the grassy
plains, Burton commented:
"I'm tbe Welsh John Wayne."
Studio executives said the picture
wu going along swimmingly because the
two stars worked so well together.

With The Family
Single Leur Faun!

There was just one difficulty.
Burton is so gregarious, such a fascinating talker in the manner of Dylan
Thomas, that they have had to clamp
down on visitors to the set. More than
once their Becket has become so involved in an ~njoyable dialogue that there's
been no more shooting for the rest of
the afternoon.
