all odds against himself to become •n amazing alb·

Th• Meigs county native, .now of Scottsdale, Arl·
zona, has bi!cbme ·an ' accomplished gymnast leSI
tban· two years after he took up the sport.
But that is only part of the reason Dick's achievement shoul.d be recognized.
The 16 vear·old has performed this feat despite
the fact he was stricken with crippling polio while
only six years old. His left hip and l~g were render·
ed useless, being completely depnved of further
growth.
After a &gt;ix-months' stay in the hospital Dick was
released with a full leg brace as his companion . He
wore the brace for seven years until it was final1y
removed during his freshman year at Rutland high
school.

Dick and his two younger brothers moved to Ari·
•ona with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Wtl·
Hams, after his father secured employment there.
Dick enrolled at Coronado !1igh school in Scottsdale

rings in the district meet. Advancing this far, he

run a half mile for ' endurance with the other boys.
