l'm as bad as mailman Pete Klein of Middleport who goes
for hikes on his vacations.

Last Week was Sports Desk's vacation. Three of the days
in near entirety were spent in the wigwam of the Cleveland
India~ watching Casey Stengel's Yankees tomahawk everything Mr. Bragan sent out to battle.
It was my first experience in seeing an entire series, and
quite
rewarding to this confirmed baseball fan.
'

There isn't much to say for Cleveland. True, they were
caught with key players injured and Vic Power and Woody
Held enroute from Kansas City. Yankee pitchers Ford and
Kucks were something to see, especially Kucks who comes in
there with a tantalizing slow curve every 5th or 6th pitch.
After looking at his fast ball, batters nea•tly fall on their face
· waiting for the slow one to get there. It wasn't hit fair once.
K
d
ucks' slow one is even slower than Ree sville's Baldy

Comparing Balderson to Kucks ought to get me back onto
the local athletic scene again:
Through much hard work and a Jot of faith and cooperation from numbers of people, th e Pomeroy Merchants will
open their home season next Sunday against Middleport on
the new Mulberry Heights Baseball Field adjacent to cthe
new county infirmary.
Manager Collins didn ' t give the field its name . I just have.
Bleacher seats will be at hand for fans when Jack West
and Jimmy Joe Hemsley team up on the mound to oppose
Jim Bowles, right now the hottest thing in southeastern Ohio
pitching circles.
•
The rarified air (mile-high Denver is tough on pitchers,
you know) on Mulberry Heights may make it tough on curve
bait pitchers but it isn't likely to bother Bowles who relies on
a good fast ball and plate corner cutting.
Jim came back from Texas, still officially on the Visalia ,
Calif., disabled list, with a lot more stuff and form than he
had during his brilliant sea•on with Middleport High last
year. Fans can't miss an enjoyable afternoon next Sunday if
lhey come out to that bali game.

Bury Bygones, And "Play Ball" ,
While nothing official has been said-Or hinted- to my
knowledge at this point, tbe roanagers of the Pony League
likely should hold a private ,pow-wow In regard to the playing
of ineligible boys by bolh th e Colonels and Jets ol Middleport.
R. S. Manley of tho Colonels regrets in the worst way what
happened. The boy in question was a55umed to be eligible on
statements of responsible parties. School records proved him
inellgil)le 11Y a couple of months.
The· Jmll!and Colonels have agreed to let the games already
played slattd. No replay~ . It is up to the other managers of the
league to decide what they want to do.
