Use Of Mitchell

To Geneva, New Y01k

James Bowlea, lanky fastballer of Middleport, the rlrst
ho~Qe talent to make a serious stab for a place Ill professional
bueliall 'for a half-a-dozen years, left Saturday tor Geneva,
N. Y. (Ciasa D) where be will start what be hopes Is the dtmb
into sports fame.
Higb fjgures in the Cincinnati Redlegs' scouting hleracby
eame to Middleport over the weekend to collect l!owles and
aee lb4t'he got to New York at once.
·
His Class C contract with the Redlegs bad lain dormant
since late April when Bowles was sent home from the major
league tryout camp in Texaa to recover from sore leg muscles.
lt was revealed by close friends of Bowles' here Sunday
that no assignment bad come through qutckly because a
place was bemg sought for him In the Class C Florida State
League. This place was unavailable, It turned out, because
the number of Negro players in that league Is limited by fiat.
The top figure was taken already and ' no vacancies had occurrecl.
These same friends of Bowles said today the 6-2 righthander waa not a bit distressed by his order tnto Class D ball.
He accepted It as perhaps a11 advanta&e.
"111 have a good chance to learn more and develop better,"
Bowles said.

Bowles was the Middleport High Star who In 1956 went
through an. tmdefeated season, leading his team In pitching
and batting to the Class A state baseball championship.
Under tutelage of Johnny Vandermeer In Texas this
IQiring, after signing a Redleg contract for $1,0oo, Bowles
added lots of steam to bll fut bill, an occasional sidearm
slider to unseat anxious 'batten, and retained hi~ extraordinary control. He was unc!efeated In OVA play with Middleport
In June and July, at 4-0.
The last Middleport High product to take the profe!l8lonal
baseball psth was Micky Miller, now an employe of the Ky·
ger Creek plant who campaigned succeSBfully In Class B ball
but gsve It up.
The only regrettable thing about Bowles departure Saturday was the quandry In which It left John Thompson, manager of the Middleport Ohio Valley Association club.
· "I'll sure miss him out there on our mound and In the batter's box," gro~ned Thnmp~n. Bowles was b'itting over .500
wltb a homer In each game, leading the league In all'departrpenltl of batting.

A couple of former local football players held a reunion a
couple of weeks ago. Sut It wu Ia-& •}range and upexpected
eettlng. On the Island of Okinawa, :".. ·
Steve Hill, a lieutenant In the U.' S. Alrforce formerly of
Pomeroy and Jim Roller, a lieutenant In the U. S. Alrforce
fo!,'lllerly of Middleport, chanced upon each other.
Wrote ex-Panther grldder (1950·51) Steve to his parents
Mr. and Mrs. A: C. Hlll, recently:
'
"While I was In Okinawa I saw Jim Roller . . . He goes
Home In December and seems ready to do ao. Ho onltl welshs
about 150 pound a now and looked very healthy. We had a
iOOd time talking over old Pomeroy v1. Middleport games."
Jim Is the aon of Mr. and Mn. Max Roller, Middleport. He
was one of fonner coach Forest Bachtel's oultltandlng backs
at Middleport, a great offe1111ve bulldozer and defensive play.
