Ex-Columbus Zoo CEO to repay $400K
COLUMBUS, Ohio
(AP) — A former chief
executive officer has
agreed to repay hundreds
of thousands of dollars to
the Columbus Zoo and
Aquarium after audits
concluded that improper
spending and questionable business practices
cost the institution more
than $630,000.
The zoo’s board of
directors on Friday
announced approval of
a settlement with former CEO Thomas Stalf
for $400,000, which an
August 2021 forensic
audit said he received
inappropriately.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that Stalf’s
attorney, Rex Elliott, said

his client agreed to pay
back the money so that
he could move forward
with his life — but he
said the zoo was well
aware of Stalf’s actions
and alleged that officials
had made his client a
scapegoat.
In January, the zoo
announced settlements
with two other former
top officials. The board
approved a $132,000
settlement with former
chief financial officer
Greg Bell and said former purchasing director
Tracy Murnane agreed to
repay $11,000, officials
said. Discussions continue with with former
marketing vice president
Peter Fingerhut, who

officials have alleged
owes the zoo just under
$57,000.
Stalf and Bell both
resigned nearly a year
ago after an investigation
by the newspaper found
they allowed relatives to
live in houses owned or
controlled by the zoo and
sought tickets for family
members to zoo entertainment events.
Elliott said in a statement that Stalf agreed
to resolve the mater
“after the zoo made clear
the goal was to pursue
every means possible to
destroy him.”
“The zoo made Mr.
Stalf a scapegoat even
though they knew about
and audited every expen-

diture it now claims
was improper. The
expenditures at issue
passed annual, formal
audits,” he said, adding
that his client’s work
had improved the zoo’s
national profile and
increased its revenues.
Zoo board chairperson
Keith Shumate said son
of the zoo board, told
the paper that the zoo
has “a different view of
things,” and stands by
the forensic audit’s conclusions. Shumate said
the settlement will allow
the zoo to move forward
and focus on “what we
should be doing: animal
welfare and providing the
community with a firstrate zoo.”

Manchin opposes Raskin nomination for Fed
By Christopher Rugaber
AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON —
Sen. Joe Manchin, a West
Virginia Democrat, said
Monday that he opposes
the nomination of Sarah
Bloom Raskin to a key
position on the Federal
Reserve’s Board of Governors, endangering her
prospects of winning Senate confirmation.
Raskin’s nomination
has been stuck in the
Senate Banking Committee after Republicans
last month unanimously
refused to vote on it,
to prevent her being
approved on a party-line
vote. Manchin is not a
member of the committee. But his opposition
means that for Raskin to
win approval, she would
need to pick up a Republican vote in the Senate.
Committee Republicans, led by Pennsylvania
Sen. Pat Toomey, have
opposed Raskin on the
grounds that she has been
an outspoken supporter

Grizzlies take
doubleheader
from RedStorm

By Bryan Walters

For Ohio Valley Publishing

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Georgia Gwinnett
College rebounded from a loss to the University
of Rio Grande on Friday afternoon, sweeping a
doubleheader from the RedStorm on Sunday afternoon in non-conference softball action at the Grizzly Softball Complex.
The 14th-ranked Grizzlies posted a 9-1 mercy
rule-shortened win in the opening game, while
posting a 4-3 walk-off victory in the nightcap.
Georgia Gwinnett improved to 19-11 as a result
of the sweep.
The two losses left Rio Grande, which was
among the teams receiving votes in the latest Top
25 poll, at 12-6 for the season.
In the opener, the RedStorm scored a first
inning run to take the lead, but the Grizzlies
scored three times in the home half of the inning
and added six more markers in the fourth to put
things on ice.
Rio Grande managed just two hits in the loss,
while committing four errors which led to five
unearned runs.
Lani Trent had two hits and drove in a run for
GGC, while Angelica Gallegos doubled and drove
in two runs. Lea McFadden and Kloey Goins also
drove in two runs each.
Piper Wagner added a double to the winning
effort, while Alexa Good struck out eight to get
the win in the pitcher’s circle.
Senior Raelynn Hastings (Commercial Point,
OH) started and took the loss for Rio Grande,
allowing nine hits and four earned runs over four
innings.
Freshman Jenna Myers (Hebron, OH) doubled
and drove in a run for the RedStorm.
In the nightcap, Rio Grande pushed across
single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to forge
a 3-all deadlock, but Gwinnett scored the gamewinner in the bottom of the seventh.

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — A nightmarish start to
River States Conference play continued on Friday
afternoon for the University of Rio Grande baseball team, with the RedStorm dropping a pair of
outings to Indiana University Kokomo.
The Cougars pounded out 11 hits in each end of
the doubleheader, taking the twin bill by scores of
12-8 and 7-1.
The sweep left IU Kokomo at 12-7 overall and
6-0 in conference play.
Meanwhile, the RedStorm slipped to 9-18 overall and 0-6 in the RSC with the two losses.
IUK never trailed in the opener, jumping to a 7-0
second inning lead.
Rio Grande did manage to close the gap to 8-7
after scoring twice in both the fifth and sixth
innings, but the Cougars pulled away for good
with one run in the seventh and three more in the
eighth.
Noah Hurlock went 4-for-5 with a home run
and four RBI for Kokomo, while Riley Garczynski
was 2-for-6. Patrick Mills and Jared Heard added
doubles in the winning effort.
Sam Hanshaw recorded an out of the only batter
he faced in the fifth inning to get the win for the
Cougars, while Ryan Beck earned his second save
despite allowing three runs over four innings.
Junior Brady Choban (Wadsworth, OH)
returned from injury to start for the RedStorm,
but suffered his fourth loss in five decisions after
allowing three hits, three runs and a walk in just
2/3 of an inning.
At the plate, junior Gavin Lovesky (Willowbrook, OH) hit a pair of home runs and drove
in three runs, while sophomore Jakob Johnson
(Pickerington, OH) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and
sophomore Darius Jordan (Minford, OH) hit his
first home run of the season.
IUK started fast in game two as well, scoring
twice in the first inning and once in the second
before lowering the boom with three more fourth
inning markers.
Mills and Dylan Steele both had two hits, including a home run, and two RBI, while Hurlock
finished 2-for-3 and Garczynski drove in a pair of
runs. Luke Hanson also doubled in the win.

March Madness has feel of ‘good ol’ days’
By Eddie Pells

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Sonny Gray delivers a pitch
against the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 29 in Chicago. The
Minnesota Twins took their first significant step toward
restocking their starting pitching by acquiring right-hander
Gray in a trade with the Reds.

Reds deal pitching

and conveniently comes
without a buyout. Gray
was one of the most
obvious and valuable
trade chips for Cincinnati, coming off a so-so
83-79 season.
The Reds have begun
a bit of a reset, having
already lost starting
pitcher Wade Miley via
waivers to the Chicago
Cubs and traded catcher
Tucker Barnhart.
“It is a loss in the
rotation,” general manager Nick Krall said.
“We’re going to look
to fill that, whether it’s
internally or externally.
We’re still looking at
the free agent market.
We’re still looking at the
trade market. We’re still
trying to run our offseason as we’re going into
spring training.”
Gray will slot right in
at the top of Minnesota’s rotation, which was
ravaged last year by the
trade of José Berríos
and the elbow injury to
Kenta Maeda that will
keep him out for most
or all of 2022. Michael
Pineda became a free
agent and could re-sign
if the price is right.
The action heated up
this weekend.
The Twins acquired
shortstop Isiah KinerFalefa and a minor
league pitcher in a trade
with Texas on Saturday,
sending catcher Mitch
Garver to the Rangers
in exchange.
Hours after the Gray
deal, the Twins sent
Kiner-Falefa, third baseman Josh Donaldson
and minor league catcher Ben Rortvedt to the
New York Yankees for
catcher Gary Sánchez
and third baseman Gio
Urshela.
The 24-year-old
Peguero, a native of the
Dominican Republic,
was signed as an international free agent by
the Reds in 2017. He
spent the 2021 season
as a reliever for High-A
affiliate Dayton, posting a 4.96 ERA in 28
appearances.
The 18-year-old
Petty was selected by
the Twins last summer out of Mainland
Regional High School in
Linwood, New Jersey.
The right-handed Petty
appeared in two minor
league games last season after signing with
the Twins for a $2.5 million bonus, forgoing his
college commitment to
Florida.

AP Sports Writer

The Minnesota Twins
emerged from the
lockout with a pressing
need for starting pitching.
Prices are as steep
as ever: Getting Sonny
Gray from the Cincinnati Reds cost the Twins
most recent first-round
draft pick.
The Twins took their
first significant step
toward restocking their
rotation on Sunday,
acquiring the righthander Gray on Sunday
in a trade that sent
pitching prospect Chase
Petty to the Reds. The
Reds included minor
league right-hander
Francis Peguero in the
deal for Petty, who was
the 26th overall selection as a high-schooler
last summer.
“We’re excited about
his future, but the ability to access someone
like Sonny Gray, who
we think pitches at
the top of the rotation
for anybody, it’s very
unique,” Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said.
“We think this is a guy
who really establishes
an anchor in our rotation, a guy that young
players can look up to
and someone we think is
really going to lead us.”
The 32-year-old Gray,
a two-time All-Star,
went 7-9 with a 4.19
ERA and 155 strikeouts
over 135 1/3 innings
in 26 starts last season, his third with the
Reds. Over nine years
in the majors with the
Oakland Athletics, New
York Yankees and Reds,
Gray has a career record
of 82-72 with a 3.61
ERA. Since 2014, he is
tied for eighth among
right-handers in baseball with 204 starts.
“He’s got great
stuff,” Falvey said. “But
beyond that, just the
way he competes every
time he goes on the
mound, that just adds a
level of pushing him up
a notch in a rotation.”
Entering the final
guaranteed season of
the deal he signed with
the Reds to complete a
trade from the Yankees
in 2019, Gray will make
a little more than $10
million. The Twins
hold a $12 million club
option for 2023 that can
escalate based on his
innings total this year

This year, the women’s

Any hoops fan hungering for a return to
normal this March might
have looked at the bracket when it finally came
out and wondered what
ever changed.
Gonzaga is the tournament’s top seed. Kansas
and Arizona are No. 1s,
as well. Duke and Kentucky are right up there
as No. 2s and the defending champion, Baylor, is
the other top seed and
a force to be reckoned
with again, too.
But all that sameness
felt like more of a celebration when the pairings were set this Selection Sunday. The mostanticipated reveal of
the year felt like a party
again, even if it might
have been pushed down
a notch on the ticker by
the unexpected return of
Tom Brady to the NFL
in an announcement that
came just as Dick Vitale
and Co., were starting to
break down the 68-team
draw.
“This was a really
special year because
we all realized what we
missed,” Villanova coach
Jay Wright said.
For the first time since
2019, the teams will scatter across the country to
eight cities for 48 games
over the first four-day
weekend of America’s
unofficial hoops holiday.
Then, they will move to
four cities for the Sweet
16. And they will cut
down the nets in New
Orleans, where the Final
Four runs April 2-4.
It figures to be a much
different atmosphere
than in Indianapolis last
year, where all 67 games
were held in a makeshift
bubble with limited fans.

COVID-19 restrictions didn’t resume as
scheduled Monday after
someone tested positive
for the virus.
U.S. District Judge
Robert Jonker did not

his order Sunday, saying only that an “essential trial participant”
tested positive over
the weekend. The trial
might resume Thursday.
The trial, which
involves 18 jurors, four
defendants and a raft
of lawyers and support
staff, started last week
in a windowless courtroom in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. The jury
heard some evidence
Wednesday and Thursday before going home
for the weekend.
Masks were optional
in court. Assistant U.S.
Attorney Jonathan Roth
was the only lawyer to
wear one, removing
it only to deliver his
opening statement to

witnesses.

are expected to testify
in the coming weeks,
along with two men,
Ty Garbin and Kaleb
Franks, who have pleaded guilty to a scheme
to kidnap Whitmer
because of her tough
policies during the early
months of the pandemic. The trial could last
more than a month.
On Thursday, jurors
for the first time heard
a recording of one of
the men specifically talk
about kidnapping Whitmer, a Democrat. Croft
could be heard saying
it should be “a quick,

It was an early rebuttal by prosecutors to
defense claims that the
men were somehow

the Russian offensives
remained stalled on Monday after making little
progress over the weekend, according to a senior
U.S. defense official who
spoke on condition of
anonymity to discuss the
Pentagon’s assessment.
Russian troops were still
about 15 kilometers (9
miles) from the center of
Kyiv, the official said.
The official said that
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces have
launched more than
900 missiles but that
Ukraine’s airspace is still
contested, with Russia
not achieving total air
superiority.

Overnight, air raid
alerts sounded in cities
and towns around the
country, from near the
Russian border in the east
to the Carpathian Mountains in the west, and
fighting continued on the
outskirts of Kyiv. Ukrainian officials said Russian
forces shelled several suburbs of the capital.
Ukrainian authorities
said two people were
killed when the Russians
struck an airplane factory
in Kyiv, sparking a large
fire. The Antonov factory is Ukraine’s largest
aircraft manufacturing
plant and is best known
for producing many of

the world’s biggest cargo
planes.
Russian artillery fire
also hit a nine-story
apartment building in
the northern Obolonskyi
district of the city, killing
two more people, authorities said. Firefighters
worked to rescue survivors, painstakingly carrying an injured woman on
a stretcher away from the
blackened and smoking
building.
And a Russian airstrike
near a Ukrainian checkpoint caused extensive
damage to a downtown
Kyiv neighborhood, killing one person, Ukraine’s
emergency agency said.
