Not Always As Bad As They Seem
Week-by-week reports that sa les tax pre-

paid receipts are below those or corres pond·
ing weeks of 1958 have c aused some to assumc bustness is worse than usual. 'It JUSt
isn't so.
Meigs Coijnty, espwally . has been raring
sadly iii .St1te Auditor Joseph T. Ferguson's
7-day releases . His computation:; for 1959 to
date are some $23 .000 below the same period
of last yea·r. Likew1se week-by-week receipts
in 1959 generally have been below those fn..the same week of last year
The reason there 1s no cause for gloom is
that under a new law sal es tax receipts a-re
not figured the same way as they were last

year, or lhe years before that. In 1959 the
all-impo11tant sales tax on motor vehicles is
not included in the total reported by Mr.
Ferguson. It is released separately unrler its
own ~ategory "Motor Veh1cle T:a'l(,"
Including this tax with tl1e regular sales
tax on ~uildry items pa.ints a different plcture of what business is doing in Meigs Coun-

ty.

actllally It was S2.101.02 over! J[ this appears

to be indulging in the sort of manipulations
government spenders ·like ·lo spread them·
selves around in, don't be concerned. Really,
lt isn't
Sales tax receiJU (qr that week in 19.58 included 'the ~otor •ehtele tax and totaled $3JB76 51. R~ipts tlllis year for that week when
odded to !his year's motor vehicle lax, total·
ed $5,765.80, which is $2,101.02 over those
CJf·the same week 1ast year.
Consider the 1959 collections to date:
Collections to Nov I, 1958 were $74,399.ll Those of 1959 to the same date were $51,·
033.83. This looks like a bad day for Meigs
County. II made the entire state look bad.
However, add motor vehicle taXes to date
to the sales tax to date and the total Is $86,022.74. which is $11,623.~ over the same
colleetlons of 1958.
So, cheer up. Things aren't alw1ys as bad

Not Always As Bad As They Seem
Week-by-week reports that sa les tax pre-

paid receipts are below those or corres pond·
ing weeks of 1958 have c aused some to assumc bustness is worse than usual. 'It JUSt
isn't so.
Meigs Coijnty, espwally . has been raring
sadly iii .St1te Auditor Joseph T. Ferguson's
7-day releases . His computation:; for 1959 to
date are some $23 .000 below the same period
of last yea·r. Likew1se week-by-week receipts
in 1959 generally have been below those fn..the same week of last year
The reason there 1s no cause for gloom is
that under a new law sal es tax receipts a-re
not figured the same way as they were last

year, or lhe years before that. In 1959 the
all-impo11tant sales tax on motor vehicles is
not included in the total reported by Mr.
Ferguson. It is released separately unrler its
own ~ategory "Motor Veh1cle T:a'l(,"
Including this tax with tl1e regular sales
tax on ~uildry items pa.ints a different plcture of what business is doing in Meigs Coun-

ty.

pared to $3,876 51 for the same week last
vear. This was an exceptionally good report
bee~~ut,e, .-..lthough only U 1.78 uader 1958,
actllally It was S2.101.02 over! J[ this appears

to be indulging in the sort of manipulations
government spenders ·like ·lo spread them·
selves around in, don't be concerned. Really,
lt isn't
Sales tax receiJU (qr that week in 19.58 included 'the ~otor •ehtele tax and totaled $3JB76 51. R~ipts tlllis year for that week when
odded to !his year's motor vehicle lax, total·
ed $5,765.80, which is $2,101.02 over those
CJf·the same week 1ast year.
Consider the 1959 collections to date:
Collections to Nov I, 1958 were $74,399.ll Those of 1959 to the same date were $51,·
033.83. This looks like a bad day for Meigs
County. II made the entire state look bad.
However, add motor vehicle taXes to date
to the sales tax to date and the total Is $86,022.74. which is $11,623.~ over the same
colleetlons of 1958.
So, cheer up. Things aren't alw1ys as bad
