Council puts old school property up for bid
By Charlene Hoeflich

choeflich@civitasmedia.com

MIDDLEPORT — Advertising the sale of the old Middleport school property has started
in The Daily Sentinel, and after
the required five runs, one per
week, it will be up for bids at a
sale at Middleport Village Hall
tentatively set for July 28.
The ordinance, given final approval for the sale of the property that includes not only the
old Middleport school, but the
Central building, along with the
football field and stadium, was
given unanimous approval by
Middleport Village Council at its
Monday meeting.

The legal description of the
property for sale can be found in
the books at the Meigs County Recorder’s Office in the Meigs County
Courthouse. Also, a copy of the
deed can be obtained at Middleport
Village Hall by request, along with
a copy of the legal description.
The ordinance specifically
defines an area exempted from
the parcels being put up for sale.
That parcel consists of 0.877,
which has been previously discussed as the possible site of a
commercial business.
Many months ago, the Meigs
County Council on Aging expressed an interest in relocating
into the school building where
they could have space to expand

their services to seniors and develop programs for other age
groups, making it an inter-generational community center. Beth
Shaver, executive director, said
the agency is prepared to bid on
the sale property. She also emphasized there is no intention of
interrupting current programs on
the football field, that youth activities anywhere in the complex
will be encouraged and welcome.
Speaking on behalf of the football league was Sarah Pullins,
who heads up the program. She
objected to the sale, contending
that it will interrupt the league’s
exclusive control over the field and
stadium, which is currently under
lease with the village until 2016.

She contended that the sale is
not in the best interest of the village’s residents, that the league
play attracts hundreds of spectators and that the village is making money off the program.
“It’s all about the kids,” she reiterated in her comments about
the importance of the program.
She said the equipment used is
stored in the stadium, and the
maintenance of the field is provided by the league.
In response to a question about
why a sale was even being considered, Mayor Michael Gerlach gave
several reasons. He explained
that the taxes are $7,000 a year,
and the expanded use of the property will bring more people into

Middleport. He reassured Pullins
that the “youth football league
is not being asked to move, that
there will be no change at all, that
it will go on as normal.”
No action was taken on the
ordinance to reduce sewer rates,
although there was some discussion on the costs involved in the
operation of the sewer-water system. Councilman Doug Dixon
raised questions about reducing
the cost of operating the system
while remaining in compliance
with the law. The ordinance was
tabled until the next meeting.
A special meeting was set for 7
p.m. June 30 to further consider
filling the position of economical
development director.

Cathy Erwin and Linda Myers, both members of the Middleport Community Association, discuss the budget for the upcoming Fourth of July celebration.

Fourth of July Fireworks

Marking the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 13 discovery of the cross, Albert Profitt fabricated this cross which is now
placed in Star Mill Park where it will remain on display until Sept. 13. Jake Ridenour and Max Jahren are pictured with
the cross for the ceremony which recognized the work of the Meigs County EMS.

Memorial tribute to 911

By Scott Wolfe

Special to the Sentinel

RACINE — A tribute to those
who lost their lives in the aftermath of 9/11 was held Saturday in
Star Mill Park, where a cross was
built and erected by area fabricator Albert Proffitt.
The cross was built as a scale
model of a cross found on Sept.
13, 2001, in the World Trade Center rubble. Along with the cross
were displays of 9/11 photos of
the original cross found on Sept.
13, and various forms of firefighting, EMS and civilian gear that
paid homage to the victims. Also
on display were a “Flag of Honor”
and a “Flag of Heroes,” respectively — flags that contained the
names of civilians who lost their
lives that day, and to honor emergency response personnel who
lost their lives.
Proffitt, of A & P Welding and
Fabricating, built the cross at 17 feet
— just a little smaller than the original 20 foot cross found at the WTC
site. The original cross was one of
four found that day in New York
City, thus the artifact provided a
significant inspiration to those who
continued to search for survivors.
A small crowd gathered at 10
a.m. Saturday to give the display a
worthy send-off. Not even a steady
drizzle could extinguish the living spirit emitted from those in
attendance to honor fallen heroes.
Proffitt said the display will be
open through “Party in the Park”
in Racine, an event that this year
runs Sept. 11-13. Plans for a more
formal event are in the works for
the final day of “Party in the Park.”
“I built this to honor those
who lost their lives,” said Proffit. “Also for those that sacrificed
while trying to rescue others. I’d
like to see our county emergency
units get involved with this. This
is to honor them and all who
serve in some way. They are the

MIDDLEPORT — $4,725.
That’s how much money the Middleport Community
Association has currently raised for the Fourth of July
fireworks next Friday, starting at 10 p.m., with the whole
event costing between $7,500 and $8,000.
Members of the assocation met Tuesday morning to finalize Fourth of July plans, including a parade, games and
singing contest for children.
President Debbie Gerlach, treasurer, Texanna Wehrung, acting secretary, and members Cathy Erwin and
Linda Myers said the fireworks cost about $6,000 alone,
with many Fourth of July donations coming from Lunch
on the River events held by the association.
Any money not used for the fireworks will go toward
other event necessities like music provided by DJ Kip
Grueser between 4-8 p.m., portable restrooms, payment
for the marching band and advertising, the group said.
Bingo Booth tickets will be $10 each, and an assortment of food will be sold at set prices.
The assocation planned to sell hot dogs without sauce
for $1, with hot dog sauce for $1.50, and soda drinks and
water for $1 from 4 p.m. until food runs out.
A singing competition will be held for children between
4:30-5:30 p.m., with each participant receiving $1. The
first-place winner will receive $10, the second-place winner
will receive $5, and the third-place winner will receive $2.
Children’s games will also be from 4:30-5:30 p.m., including games like “Spit the Pickle,” in which children will put
a small pickle in their mouth and spit it as far as they can.
Any child participating in the Fourth of July Parade will
receive a free ice cream cone from Dairy Queen.
The grand marshall of the parade, held at 6 p.m., will be
Nathan Biggs, and the raising of the flag will be executed
by American Legion and the River City Players Chorus.

true heroes out there.”
A construction worker discovered the original 20-foot tall cross
standing upright in the rubble
of the Twin Towers. During the
emotional clean up at Ground
Zero, the cross became the symbol of solace and peace.
“These large-scale artifacts
are what will tell the story of
what happened on 9/11,” said
WTC museum president Joe
Daniels, during the dedication
of that facility. Proffitt wants to

tell that same story locally.
Proffitt noted that this year
is a special one for what now is
referred to as the 9-13 Crosses,
because it is the 13th anniversary.
Stay tuned to The Daily Sentinel
for more information on upcoming 9-13 events.
During Saturday’s event, town
folks came and went. EMS personnel came to pay homage and
leave artifacts from their various
trades, and others came just to
observe.

SYRACUSE — The third
annual Syracuse Homecoming will be Saturday,
June 28, at the Syracuse
Community Center.
The event is open to all
residents, as well as class
members who attended
Syracuse School.
The doors will open at

There will be a program
by Jordan Pickens on history and he will be presenting a book of old pictures
of the Bend Area published
earlier this year. The books
will be for sale at the event.
Former residents of the
community, many of whom
attend school there, are expected to be returning for a
day of reminiscing and getting reacquainted with former classmates. There will
be favors from Farmers Bank.

College grads need
future without debt
The U.S. Senate held a vote recently to bring up legislation allowing student debt holders to refinance old loans
at lower current interest rates. The motion to debate the
Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act (S.
2432) garnered a 56-38 majority, but fell short of the 60
votes needed to open debate.
Republicans cast 37 of the 38 “no” votes. Only three
Republicans joined 53 Democrats and Independents in
voting to debate the bill.
For members of the college and high school classes of
2014, and for past graduates, this effort to tackle the student debt issue is sorely needed.
Whether their degrees are in math, science, history or
English, our graduates are coming out of college schooled
in something else entirely: the crushing weight of student
loan debt.
With outstanding student debt now topping $1.2 trillion, 40 million Americans are facing the consequences
of our failing national commitment to higher education.
This situation poses a threat to America’s economic vitality and its promise of opportunity.
The Federal Reserve reports that growing student loan
debt is holding borrowers back from buying homes and
cars. This is bad news for an economy still trying to get
its mojo back since the Great Recession.
Student loans have turned into a big business for the
U.S. Department of Education, which reportedly made a
profit of $41.3 billion from federal student loans last year.
If the department were a corporation, it would be one of
the most profitable in the world.
It’s time to address the student debt crisis and the toll
it’s taking on the economy. Allowing refinancing will save
borrowers thousands of dollars in interest payments. That
will free up disposable income, boost consumer spending,
and strengthen the economy.
However, to fix the overall student debt picture, we
need to think even bigger — big enough to put “free
college” back on the national agenda. Does free college
sound like magical thinking? It’s more like a walk down
memory lane.
Some 50 years ago in California, tuition-free college
wasn’t pie in the sky, it was state policy. In 1964, a worldclass education in the public University of California system came with free tuition and fees totaling just $220 for
the year.
At the 1964 minimum wage of $1.25 an hour, you could
earn $220 in 4 1/2 weeks of full-time work. That means a
University of California student 50 years ago could earn
enough to pay for a year’s college costs by flipping burgers
for a month in the summer.
Today, even at in-state rates, with tuition and fees averaging $8,893 for the 2013-2014 school year, it would
take seven months of full-time work at the $7.25 federal
minimum wage to make that much.
What’s changed since 1964? A massive public disinvestment from higher education has shifted the costs of
college onto students and families. Just in the past few
years, state funding per student was cut by an average of
27 percent nationwide.
Private interests have filled the void, transforming college finance into a vehicle for financial industry profits.
Private lenders have moved aggressively into the student
loan market, offering loans with interest rates in the double digits. The explosion of student loan debt has also fueled a burgeoning student loan debt collection industry.
Translation: Wall Street has turned our college students
into a new cash cow.
It doesn’t have to be this way. If we’re serious about giving our children and grandchildren real freedom — freedom from student debt — we need to reverse the trend of
public disinvestment, put a stop to private profiteering,
and recommit to free college in America. Then we need to
marshal the resources to make it happen. Ending offshore
tax giveaways to multinational corporations and millionaires would be one way to get there.
Is solving the student debt crisis going to take a fight,
given the political clout of the financial interests that are
making big money off the status quo? Of course. But it’s a
fight worth having.
Let’s make college in America what it should be: a free,
shared vehicle for building an educated people, not another costly way for special interests to take us for a ride.

Today in history...
Today is Wednesday, June 25, the
176th day of 2014. There are 189
days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
On June 25, 2009, death claimed
Michael Jackson, the “King of Pop,”
in Los Angeles at age 50 and actress
Farrah Fawcett in Santa Monica, California, at age 62.
On this date:
In 1788, Virginia ratified the U.S.
Constitution.
In 1876, Lt. Col. Colonel George
A. Custer and his 7th Cavalry were
wiped out by Sioux and Cheyenne
Indians in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Montana.
In 1888, the Republican National
Convention, meeting in Chicago,
nominated Benjamin Harrison for
the presidency. (Harrison went on to
win the election, defeating President
Grover Cleveland.)
In 1910, President William Howard Taft signed the White-Slave Traffic Act, more popularly known as the
Mann Act, which made it illegal to
transport women across state lines
for “immoral” purposes.
In 1938, the Fair Labor Standards
Act of 1938 was enacted.
In 1943, Congress passed, over
President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s
veto, the Smith-Connally Anti-Strike
Act, which allowed the federal government to seize and operate privately owned war plants facing labor
strikes.
In 1950, war broke out in Korea as
forces from the communist North invaded the South.
In 1962, the U.S. Supreme Court,
in Engel v. Vitale, ruled 6-1 that recitation of a state-sponsored prayer in
New York State public schools was
unconstitutional.
In 1973, former White House
Counsel John W. Dean began testi-

fying before the Senate Watergate
Committee, implicating top administration officials, including President
Richard Nixon as well as himself, in
the Watergate scandal and cover-up.
In 1984, the Prince and the Revolution soundtrack album “Purple
Rain” was released by Warner Bros.
Records.
In 1993, Kim Campbell was sworn
in as Canada’s 19th prime minister,
the first woman to hold the post.
In 1998, the U.S. Supreme Court
rejected a line-item veto law as unconstitutional, and ruled that HIVinfected people are protected by the
Americans with Disabilities Act.
Ten years ago: Republican Jack
Ryan withdrew from the U.S. Senate race in Illinois after revelations
of sex-club visits with his then-wife,
actress Jeri Ryan. President George
W. Bush and his wife, Laura, opened
a European trip as they arrived in
Ireland. Taliban fighters killed up to
17 people after learning they had registered for Afghanistan’s U.S.-backed
national elections.
Five years ago: North Korea
vowed to enlarge its atomic arsenal and warned of a “fire shower of
nuclear retaliation” in the event of a
U.S. attack, as the regime marked the
1950 outbreak of the Korean War.
One year ago: President Barack
Obama declared the debate over climate change and its causes obsolete
as he announced at Georgetown University a wide-ranging plan to tackle
pollution and prepare communities
for global warming. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the
whereabouts of National Security
Agency leaker Edward Snowden at
a Moscow airport, but promptly rejected a U.S. plea to turn him over.
Democratic Texas State Senator
Wendy Davis began a one-woman

filibuster to block a GOP-led effort
to impose stringent new abortion restrictions across the nation’s secondmost populous state. (Republicans
voted to end the filibuster minutes
before midnight, sparking a chaotic
scene with demonstrators who succeeded in forcing lawmakers to miss
the deadline for passing the bill.)

our world and our understanding of the cosmos.
The signal was sent in

by the hopelessly poetic
name of “M13.” They
chose M13 because among
the cluster’s hundreds of
thousands of stars might
exist at least some planets
where technologically advanced life could exist.

But today, four decades

journeyed little more than

one-thousandth of the way
toward its destination. If it
should one day be received
and deciphered, a reply
would take another 250
centuries to reach us.
Not a particularly lively
conversation, but that’s
OK. No one ever expected
a reply. The signal was intended only as a message
in a bottle, tossed by the
human race to the cosmic
sea. It said, in essence,
“We’re here”. And, while
we may never know its fate,
it might one day let other
beings curious about their
own uniqueness know that
they are not alone.
It’s all a pretty remarkable concept, if you ask
me. And equally remarkable is that we can see
this very star cluster with
our own eyes on any clear,
dark night … if we know
just where to look.
During late June, gaze
high in the east after dark
to find the constellation
Hercules — or Heracles as
the ancient Greeks knew
him — who represents the
immortal strong man of
Greek mythology.
Hercules is the fifthlargest constellation in the
sky but, because it doesn’t
contain any brilliant stars,
it’s not particularly prominent. What is easier to
locate, however, are four
stars that form a distorted
square, or “keystone”.

From a dark-sky site, identify the keystone of Hercules
and look about one-third
of the way between the
northwestern-most and the
southwestern-most stars for
a faint, fuzzy patch of light.
You may not see it at first, so
try a trick used frequently
by astronomers. Instead of
staring directly at this spot,
look slightly off to its side.
When not looking directly
at it, you should see its hazy
light more easily.
This seemingly insignificant smudge is one of a
hundred or so globular star
clusters known throughout
our Milky Way Galaxy.
These contain hundreds of
thousands of relatively old
stars bound together by
gravitation, the same force
that holds us to the Earth.
Though M13 is barely
visible to the unaided eye
on a clear, dark night, aim a
small telescope in its direction and you’ll be stunned
by the thousands of stars
you can see within its spherical form. You will surely exclaim, “It’s full of stars!”
And, if there are alien
stargazers living in M13,
imagine what they might
see in their own sky. The
stars would appear hundreds of times more concentrated than under the
best conditions here on
Earth, and nighttime would
be a exceedingly rare and
bone-chilling experience.

Cavaliers mull over options with No. 1 draft pick
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cavaliers have had plenty of practice picking first in the NBA draft.
That doesn’t mean they’ve gotten
better at it.
For the second straight year, third
time in four years and fourth time
since 2003 — when they selected a
high school phenom named LeBron
James — the Cavs own the No. 1
overall selection. On Thursday night,
the Cavs, who only chose new coach
David Blatt last week, will once again
be the first team on the clock.
They’ve been lucky. Now, they
need to be good.
Cleveland is expected to select either Duke forward Jabari Parker or
Kansas forward Andrew Wiggins,
considered a pair of can’t-miss prospects who could help push the Cavs

of the NBA Finals at AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami on Tues- of his Miami Heat contract on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.

day, is thinking about bringing his
talents back to his native Ohio after
four years — and four straight trips
to the finals.
James’ decision to hit the freeagent market has Cleveland, and
nearly every other NBA team, reevaluating draft plans. The Cavs are
in an interesting predicament: They
could overhaul their roster by trading star guard Kyrie Irving or another starter two to create salary-cap
space for James and to possibly land
another All-Star, but then risk having James break their hearts again
and sign elsewhere; They also could
make a play for Minnesota’s Kevin
Love.
One thing is certain, the Cavs have
several options at No. 1.
They could work a trade to acquire players or picks. It’s possible
the Cavs are still intrigued enough
with Kansas center Joel Embiid, who
recently underwent foot surgery and

is expected to be sidelined for six
months, to strike a deal, move out of
the top spot and select the 7-footer.
Embiid may be raw, but some believe he’s also rare, too rare to pass
up.
“I still think Joel Embiid, the
big guy, is the best prospect in
this draft,” ESPN analyst Jay Bilas
said. “I understand the reticence
because of his recent injury, but I
would have to have a medical team
tell me, ‘Don’t take this guy, this is
a bad medical risk’ for me to say
no to him.”
Cavs general manager David Griffin began receiving calls from teams
looking to get their hands on the
top pick shortly after Commissioner
Adam Silver announced it had fallen
in the lottery to Cleveland, a gift sent
the club never expected. It will take
plenty to pry the choice away from
Griffin, who sees it as a chance to
speed the team’s recovery.

LeBron tells Heat he
will become free agent
MIAMI (AP) — LeBron
James delivered his message loud and clear, without actually saying a word.
He’s willing to leave Miami, if that’s what it will take
to win more championships.
And what happens next will
likely be up to not just the
Heat, but Dwyane Wade and
Chris Bosh as well.
Through his agent,
James informed the Heat
on Tuesday that he has
decided to opt out of the
final two years of his contract, a move that means
he becomes a free agent
on July 1. He will be able
to sign with any team, including Miami, and Heat
President Pat Riley said he
“fully expected” James to
take advantage of his early
termination option.
“We look forward to sitting down with LeBron
and his representatives and
talking about our future together,” Riley said.
The Heat have been preparing for this for some time.
James, Wade and Bosh all
got six-year contracts when
they teamed up in Miami in
July 2010, the last time free
agency was accompanied by
the sort of frenzy that will
envelop the league over the
next few weeks. But each
of those deals came with
options to leave either this
summer or in 2015, in part
to allow both the players and
the team to have financial
flexibility.
James — who averaged

27.1 points this past season
— was owed $42.7 million
for the next two seasons,
though that seems irrelevant
in the sense that he’ll be getting plenty of money from
the Heat or someone else
for years to come. If he stays
with Miami, he could sign a
deal that would give the team
room to maneuver within the
structures of the salary cap
and luxury-tax threshold.
So could Wade and Bosh,
if they choose to opt out as
well — and if both do, Miami would potentially have
plenty of cash to spend on
roster upgrades. Neither
has announced their plans.
“No news here yet,”
Wade said Tuesday.
James stayed silent
as well, with agent Rich
Paul being the one who
informed the Heat of the
four-time NBA MVP’s plan.
But last week, while still
dealing with the sting of
losing the NBA Finals to
San Antonio, James expressed how enticing the
idea of flexibility is to him.
“Being able to have flexibility as a professional,
anyone, that’s what we all
would like,” James said last
week. “That’s in any sport,
for a football player, a baseball player, a basketball player, to have flexibility and be
able to control your future
or your present. I have a position to be able to do that.
… There’s a lot of times that
you’re not in control of your
future as a professional.”

Friday night during the North South Basketball Classic at the South Charleston Community Center Point Pleasant’s Wade Martin was
named North team Most Outstanding Player,
while on Saturday at the North South Football
Classic at Laidley Field Wahama’s Kane Roush
earned South team Most Valuable Player.
The North team won the basketball classic
by a 104-88 count and was led by Most Outstanding Player Jon Elmore, who scored 25
points on the night. The South team MOP,
Martin, scored 18 points while marking seven
rebounds and four assists. Martin combined
with teammates Jerome Jones, of Washington, and David Park, of Wheeling Central,
combined for 61 points and 28 rebounds. Martin also competed in the three-point and slam
dunk competitions.
Saturday’s football classic was won by the
South team by a score of 46-26, despite the
North offense holding a 21-10 advantage in
first downs. Roush made his impact on the defensive side of the ball forcing and recovering
a fumble, which he then returned 75 yards for
a touchdown. Roush also intercepted a pass in
the win. Zach Phillips of Wheeling Park was
named MVP for the North squad.
Wade Martin will be attending Fishburne

Kane Roush will be playing on Laidley Field
for the University of Charleston.

Cavaliers hire Tyronn Lue as associate head coach
portant as we move into a new era of
competitive Cavaliers basketball.”
Yahoo! first reported Lue’s hiring.
Lue was one of the finalists to get
the Cleveland job before it went to
Blatt, who signed a three-year contract with a fourth year club option
on Friday. The 55-year-old Blatt has
never coached in the NBA — or the
U.S. — so bringing in a coach with
Lue’s experience will help him and
give the Cavs an insurance policy.
“I could not be happier that Ty
will be joining the Cavaliers’ coaching staff as my top assistant,” Blatt
said. “I look forward to leveraging all
of his experiences and expertise into
our team’s development. “This is a
character guy and winner himself
who played and worked with some
of the greatest talents and successful
leaders in NBA history. I am thrilled
to have him by my side as we get to
work in Cleveland.”

The 37-year-old Lue played guard
for 11 seasons with seven NBA
teams. He won NBA titles as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers in
2000 and 2001. Lue spent the past
five years working on Doc Rivers’
staff in Boston and Los Angeles and
is regarded as one of the league’s rising young coaches.
Lue thanked Rivers’ for his “deep
support, mentorship and friendship”
and “helping prepare me so well for
this next step and challenge.”
Lue sees Cleveland as a great opportunity.
“Through numerous discussions
with David and Griff, I felt Cleveland
is a great situation for me,” he said.
“I believe my background will help
me play a key part in helping achieve
the vision that the leadership of this
franchise has for its team. I can’t wait
to get to work with Coach Blatt and
our players.”

Camp scholarship
opportunity available
to local girls
RIO GRANDE, Ohio
— The University of Rio
Grande and Marjorie Evans
would like to make high
school girls who reside in
Gallia and Meigs aware of
an opportunity to apply for
full and partial scholarships
to attend Rio’s overnight
basketball camp.

The camp, which is directed by long-time Rio
Grande women’s basketball
head coach David Smalley,
is scheduled for July 6-9.
Evans, a Rio Grande
College alum and a retired
school teacher, has generously sponsored an endowment in memory of her late
husband, D. Wayne Evans.
The endowment will provide one full and several
additional basketball camp
scholarship opportunities

for high school girls at
each high school in both
Gallia and Meigs counties.
To be considered for the
scholarship program, campers simply need to complete
the online application form,
which can be found on the
women’s basketball page
of the University of Rio
Grande’s athletic website
(www.rioredstorm.com).
Applicants can click on the
“D. Wayne Evans Camp
Scholarship” tab at the top

of the page and the application will be forwarded directly to Smalley.
Evans, an avid local
sports fan, understands the
importance of extracurricular activities for high school
girls. Through the establishment of the scholarship
program, she is hoping to
support area high school
girls who have established
a balance of academics,
servant leadership qualities
and financial need.
For more information,
contact Smalley by phone
at 740-245-7491 or by email at dsmalley@rio.edu
