Probation violators sentenced

Local prosecutor discusses community control, O.R. bonds
By Amber Gillenwater

agillenwater@civitasmedia.com

GALLIPOLIS — One Gallia
County prosecutor discussed
community control, as well as
the need for own recognizance
bonds locally after the Gallia
County Common Pleas Court
recently revoked probation
sentences and three Gallia
County men were sentenced to
prison.
James Raines, 35, Terry F.
Cantrell, 55, and Shane Stewart, 45, all of Gallipolis, were
recently sentenced to the Ohio

Department of Rehabiltiation
and Correction in separate
cases after they violated the
terms of their community
control and their probation
sentences were revoked by the
court.
Raines was sentenced to
11 months of imprisonment
earlier this month for his illegal possession of eight Opana
tablets on Aug. 17, 2012. He
was placed on three years of
community control in June
2013. He later violated the
terms of his community con-

Sheriff
releases phone
scam warning
Staff Report
GDTnews@civitasmedia.com

GALLIPOLIS — The Buckeye State Sheriff’s
Association is alerting all Ohio residents of a scam
circulating throughout the state, and while no
reports of the scam have been documented locally,
Gallia County Sheriff Joe Browning is alerting
those in Gallia County to be wary of any unusual
phone calls.
According to Browning, the phone scam is currently operating in the Mahoning County area in
northern Ohio and sheriff’s officials suspect that it
is happening in other counties as well.
Details of the scam attempt include a caller
identifying himself or herself as a deputy sheriff,
or other law enforcement agent from a particular
county. The caller further states that there is a
warrant for the person receiving the call’s arrest
for failure to appear and this can only be taken
care of by posting bond over the phone. The caller
further tells the victim that this bond cannot be
satisfied by appearing in person and must be
handled over the phone. Credit card information is
taken from the unsuspecting individual and funds
are deducted from the credit card.
The state sheriff’s association further warns
that this scheme is false and is designed to
obtain credit card and personal information
from unsuspecting citizens, and officials further
recommended that residents never give personal
information out by phone.

trol and failed to appear for a
final hearing on two occasions.
He was just arrested late last
month with the prison sentence following his arrest.
Cantrell was charged following a 2011 burglary and
was sentenced to 24 months
of community control in July
2013 after pleading guilty to
said charge. A warrant was
issued for his arrest in December after he had reportedly
failed to make any in-person
visits to his probation officer.
After his arrest in late June,

Cantrell was sentenced last
week to four years of imprisonment for burglary.
Stewart was charged with
multiple drug-related counts
in July 2012, and was subsequently sentenced to two years
of community control after he
pleaded guilty to two counts
of trafficking in drugs. A warrant was issued for his arrest
in February after he failed to
make any office visits or to
contact his probation officer in
any way after being placed on
probation. He was not arrested

until late July, and during a
hearing last week, his community control was revoked
and he was ordered to serve
11 months of imprisonment
for each count of trafficking in
drugs — sentences ordered to
be served concurrently.
Following these recent
sentencing hearings, Gallia
County Assistant Prosecuting
Attorney Eric Mulford commented on these cases, and,
specifically, the need to place
many offenders on community
control.

Purple Heart
reunited with
local family
By April Jaynes

ajaynes@civitasmedia.com

RIPLEY, W.Va. —
Thanks to a considerate
individual, the World
Wide Web and a nonprofit foundation, a Purple
Heart has finally made its
way back into the hands
of its owner’s family.
The search for veteran
and Purple Heart recipient James F. Sneed’s
family took off when the
individual who found
the medal, Carrie LynchMyers, of Ripley, posted
a photo on Facebook
earlier this month showing the medal she found
in a second-hand purse
she had purchased. The
Facebook post asked for
help in identifying the
veteran’s family.
The post quickly went
viral, receiving more than
365,000 shares.
Eventually, the Facebook post was brought
to the attention of the
founder of Purple Hearts
Reunited Inc., active
captain in the Vermont
National Guard and
Purple Heart recipient
Zachariah Fike, after
hundreds of individuals
contacted him about
Sneed’s medal.
“It went viral on Facebook, and because of
our foundation people
from across the country
were reaching out to
us saying, ‘Hey are you
aware of this and can
you help?’” Fike said.
“We had about 400 to
500 people contact us

A photo of Sneed family members was also found with veteran James F. Sneed’s Purple Heart,
which was returned to the Sneed family on Wednesday. Sneed was originally from Point
Pleasant and served in Korea during World War II. Photo courtesy of Capt. Zachariah Fike and

we were able to find the

Fike said the foundation initially learned
about Sneed’s medal last
Sunday, identified his
family on Monday, and
by Wednesday the medal
was returned to the

Sneed, born in Point
Pleasant in 1920, was a
warrant officer during
World War II. He also
served during the Korean
War.
There are three ways a
medal can be identified
via an engraving, Fike
said. If a soldier is killed
in combat, the name will
be engraved on the back
of the medal and it will
be presented to the fam-

ily. The other two ways
a medal can be traced
to its soldier is through
a personal engraving
or a replacement medal
record.
“This medal that was
found was a replacement
medal, which actually
was a good thing,” he
said. “In this case, the

Fike founded Purple Hearts
Reunited Inc. in 2012, just a few
years after his first year-long
search for a Purple Heart recipient’s family and receiving a Purple
Heart of his own after he was
wounded on Sept. 11, 2010, in
Afghanistan.
His first search, which took
him a year, began after Fike’s
mother gave him a Purple Heart
for Christmas in 2009 that she
had found in an antique shop. A
veteran herself, as well as Fike’s
father, the Fike family was more
than familiar with the significance
of the medal.
“We all knew what that medal
meant, and she knew better that
that medal didn’t belong there, so
she paid $100 for it,” he said.
Fike said seeing the veteran’s
family reunite after his first search
was a monumental experience,
and fueled his desire to return as
many medals as possible.
“To see them, for the first time
coming together — after his death
they kind of all went their separate
ways — they celebrated their firstever family reunion around that
medal returned,” he said. “So I got
to see 60 family members, three

generations, ages 3 to 93, coming
together for the very first time. It
was just magical. And we haven’t
looked back since. We’ve returned
more than 100 medals to date.”
The foundation gets approximately three to five medals each
week, and currently has more than
200 medals for which they’re trying to find a home, Fike said.
Fike said he encourages people
who find medals to reach out to
the foundation and is grateful for
individuals like Lynch-Myers.
“Carrie should be commended.
She did the right thing,” he said.
“Believe it or not, people trade
these like baseball cards. There are
collectors out there that actively
look for them. So for her to go
national with it and enlist the help
of everyone across the country —
even overseas, I’ve got messages
from people in Europe that saw
it — so to get that much attention,
she did the right thing. She should
be proud of what she did and that
the medal is now back with the

THEIR VIEW

Don’t hide
depression;
let’s start talking
Life brings with it a roller-coaster ride of emotions. It is expected there are times when we will
be happy or sad, angry or giddy, worried or carefree.
There will even be times we feel down.
Imagine being unable to shake that feeling of
despair and hopelessness.
For someone suffering from depression — and
one in every six people will at some point — that
veil of darkness can last days or weeks. It can be
so consuming as to affect daily activities such as
work or school.
Every 13 minutes, it results in someone dying
from suicide.
It’s unfortunate it often takes the death of a
high-profile celebrity such as Robin Williams to
open the channels of communication about depression. Unfortunate not only because the world has
lost a true comedic treasure, but also because
greater awareness and open discussion of depression is paramount to preventing such tragedies in
the future.
Although the stigma once associated with mental health issues is fading, there are still too many
people who think depressed people “should just
get over it” or should “just think positively.” There
are those who won’t bring up their own feelings
for fear of being branded with such derogatory
labels as “nuts.”
“We need to dispel the ‘cowboys don’t cry’
attitude,” comedian Mel Miller told The Citizen
newspaper.
Part of that is the remnant of a generational
mindset. Those most prone to depression and suicide (men age 45 to 64 followed closely by men 85
and older) are from a time when showing emotion
or talking about feelings was considered a sign of
weakness.
So people with depression put on a mask for
those around them. They force a smile, promise
everything is all right, or tell a few jokes.
Meanwhile the darkness festers inside. Like a
caustic acid, it slowly eats away any sense of hope
and well-being.
Some will try to deal with it themselves, relying
on self-medicating and sometimes falling victim to
addiction. Others will just hope things get better.
Depression is a real and serious health concern.
In addition to compounding existing health issues,
such as chronic pain, it can lead to fatigue, insomnia, persistent headaches or digestive problems
and excessive sleep.
There is hope, though. Almost 80 percent of
those who seek treatment for depression get better through a variety of treatments ranging from
exercise to medication.
The key is being able to keep it in the forefront
and talk about it without shame, prejudice or judgment.
That discussion has started. Let’s keep it open.

There are pine cones in my soup

By Daris Howard

Just as I started to eat my
tomato soup, a pine cone suddenly
landed in my bowl, splashing soup
all over my shirt.
Instantly, all my scouts were up
from the table and into action. I
shook my head while I thought
about the chain of events that had
led us to this point.
Scout camp had started much
as any other had. We had arrived
at the church early in the morning, had one last equipment
check, and were soon loaded and
on our way. After arriving at the
camp, we hauled our stuff to our
designated area. My boys always
liked the campsite farthest out in
the woods. It gave us a sense of
aloneness, and we didn’t have the
continual traffic of visitors past
our camp that others had. It also
meant that we had more wild animals fearlessly coming to visit.
After our gear was safely
stacked, we did the usual check in:
medicals forms, registration material, and the swim check in the ice
cold water to test the strength of
our hearts. Last of all, we set up
our camp. Once the tents were
in place and the kitchen gear was
where we wanted it, we had a
short time for some relaxation
before the merit badge stations
opened for the day.
That was when the trouble
began. Gordy opened a pack of
Rolo candy, ate one, and put the
rest on the chair beside him. We

were sitting, visiting, when the
world’s most Satanic squirrel
snuck up quietly beside him. In
a flash, the squirrel grabbed the
Rolo in its mouth, and took off
down the trail.
“He’s got my Rolos!” Gordy
yelled, and the whole troop took
off after the squirrel. But the squirrel was fast, and even though the
boys ran as hard as they could, the
distance between them and the
squirrel widened. However, when
the squirrel reached the tree, the
Rolo was too heavy for him to
carry up. He made a couple of desperate attempts before the boys,
closing in fast, made him drop his
stolen goods and retreat to a high
branch for safety.
Gordy recovered his candy, and
shook his fist at the squirrel. “You
little thief! You wait until I get
hold of you!”
The squirrel, safe on the branch
above, shook his fist back, and
yelled “Chi! Chi! Chi!” Then he
grabbed a little pine cone and
tossed it expertly, dinging Gordy
on the nose.
“Why, you little furball!” Gordy
yelled. He picked up a stick and
flung it into the tree at the squirrel.
The squirrel retreated higher
into the tree, and tossed another
pine cone at Gordy. This infuriated
Gordy more, and he started throwing sticks, rocks, and anything else
he could get his hands on. The
other scouts joined him, and soon
there was a cloud of flying objects.

Some of my scouts were not the
best aim, and many items sailed
beyond the tree and some started
dropping into the camp.
“Hey!” I yelled. “Throw the
other way!”
That was how the war began.
But it was to be a long, unending battle. The boys named the
squirrel “Psycho”, and from then
on, there were almost unending
attacks from both sides. Psycho
felt the camp belonged to him,
and he laid claim to anything that
came into it. If it was not tied
down, locked up, or zipped away,
it disappeared into his winter storage. The boys laid traps, fashioned
sling shots, and created crude
bows and arrows. But Psycho
always seemed to hold the upper
hand, especially since the trees
were high and the pine cone missiles were plentiful.
So the pine cone had no sooner
landed in my soup than the boys
were dashing off to make a counter assault. As for me, I simply
dug the pine cone out of my bowl
and drank my soup, pine gum and
all, before another one could land
in it.
It was actually a peaceful
moment for me. The war had
gone on all week, and I had finally
learned to ignore the barrage of
sticks and stones flying all around
me, as well as the pine cones raining down from overhead.

OBITUARIES
ROBERT EUGENE MILLER
PATRIOT —
Robert “Bob”
Eugene Miller, 71,
of Patriot, departed from this life on
Thursday, Aug. 14,
2014, at St. Mary’s
Medical Center in
Huntington, W.Va.
Bob was born March
9, 1943, in a home on
Dry Ridge in Greenfield
Township near Gallia to
the late Thomas Cecil
and Nellie Grey (Wood)
Miller.
His father was quite
the entrepreneur, supplying the neighborhood
with goods from his rolling grocery stores, and
operating the Gallia store.
Robert worked hard,
along with his brothers
and sisters, on the farm
until he joined his older
brother Arnold in the
U.S. Army.
Right out of boot camp,
he was sent to the commander, who did not
understand why he had
orders for Robert from
so high up the chain. He
wondered who Robert
knew. Robert was clueless as to what was happening. He was sent to
Germany, where he soon
found out. His brother
Arnold was chauffer and
personal assistant to
Gen. Mildred. Arnold had
acquired special favor
for Robert, who replaced
him when Arnold was
discharged.
The army stories he
and Arnold told were
unique and so very
entertaining. Robert was
charged with assisting the
general with his uniforms,
personal needs, and protecting and chauffeuring

him. Because of
favor and position,
Robert was privy
to many secrets
and some of the
finer things in life.
He had excellent
taste. For as long
as he lived, he shined his
shoes, and ironed his and
everyone else’s clothes.
He was a sharp dresser
and had an appropriate
outfit for all occasions.
Dad loved his hats.
Robert had attended
Gallia and Cadmus
schools, and quit Southwestern High School in
his junior year to join the
U.S. Army at 17 years of
age. After discharge, he
drove a bread truck for
Heiners, then acquired
the Jackson Carry Out.
After selling the Carry
Out, he went to work for
A.P. Green Refractories
as the maintenance director until he retired. He
was able to fix any equipment and took pride in
keeping the plant running
neat and clean.
Robert was a great
patriot and loved his
grandchildren. He especially loved fine food,
and cooking for friends
and family. He traveled
all over with his friends
to attend many bluegrass
festivals after retiring.
Robert knew so many
people, and would give
anyone the shirt off his
back. He was a member
of AMVETS and the
Moose.
Robert was the life of
the party and he loved to
make children laugh and
be happy. No one walked
away empty handed from
a visit with him, as he

freely gave each person
something, whether a
honey bun for one of his
grandchildren or a tool
for a friend. His generosity followed him in death
as he was also an organ
donor.
Robert is survived by
his wife of 32 years, Teresa Kay (Franklin) Miller,
of Patriot; children Barbara Ruth (Robbie) Farley, of Gallipolis, Matthew
Vincent (Tammy) Miller,
of Grove City, and Danny
Lee (Carrie McNeal)
Miller, of Patriot; grandchildren Alex, Noah,
Haylee, Miya, Hannah,
Sophia, Jude and Jolee; a
host of in-laws, nephews,
nieces, cousins, friends;
and his little dog, Katy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by one daughter,
Stephanie Lynn Miller;
siblings Vernon, Darlene
(Rutt), Thelma (Jaynes),
Donald, Oscar, Arnold,
Clayton and Ronald
Miller.
Funeral services will
be 1 p.m. Monday, Aug.
18, 2014, at Lewis &
Gillum Funeral Home in
Oak Hill, with the Rev.
Tim Simpson officiating.
Burial will follow in Gallia
Baptist Cemetery with
military graveside services provided by the DAV
Post 45 of Jackson.
Friends may call the
funeral home between
2-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17,
2014. Online condolences
may be sent to www.
lewisgillumfuneralhomes.
com.
To sum up Robert
Miller, one might say,
“Enjoy!”

Bucks taking it easy with Miller
COLUMBUS, Ohio
(AP) — Braxton Miller
says he’s ready to play in
a game. Now.
He even challenged a
sports writer to go out
for a pass, to prove that
his surgically repaired
right shoulder is sturdy
enough to wing a throw
on demand.
“I feel good. I could
throw right now. You
want to run a route?”
he said, laughing. “I feel
good, man.”
With just over two
weeks remaining until
the opener against Navy,
Ohio State is being
extremely cautious with
the tender right arm of
its star quarterback.
Miller, a two-time
Big Ten player of the
year, had surgery last
spring on his throwing
shoulder. He missed
all 15 spring workouts
while rehabbing and,
after a full load of work
in the first few days of
fall camp, sat out Saturday’s scrimmage with

some soreness.
Coach Urban Meyer
is not concerned — not
now, anyway.
“It’s still early,” he
said. “If this was (later
in camp) and he didn’t
go, then that’s going to
hinder our progress.”
Ohio State’s coaches,
including Miller’s protege, offensive coordinator and QBs coach
Tom Herman, are being
very careful. They don’t
want to jeopardize their
prized pupil, particularly
when he’s backed by
largely inexperienced
subs.
Sophomores Cardale
Jones and Luke Morgan
and freshmen J.T. Barrett and Stephen Collier
are Miller’s top understudies. None has faced
the heat in a game hanging in the balance.
Because Miller is such
a precious commodity,
and also because the
Buckeyes believe they
have an abundance of
other players to throw

and hand the ball to, it’s
likely that he will run
the ball less than he has
in his first three seasons
as a starter.
At least that’s the
plan in mid-August. In a
game, with the outcome
teetering on the brink
in the closing minutes,
well, then maybe that
plan will be revised.
“There’s a definite
conscious effort to limit
the called runs that we
have had for him in the
past,” Herman said.
“But you’re also talking
about one of the most
dynamic athletes in the
country, too. So we’ll
be cautious with him, is
probably the best way to
put it, while understanding that element of his
game is what makes him
so successful and makes
him such a challenge to
defend.”
In other words, Ohio
State doesn’t want to
run Miller any more
than it has to. But it
also wants to make sure

it wins; there’s no need
saving him for a secondary bowl game.
“I’ll get a chance to
throw it around to a lot
different guys this year.
I’m very blessed with
those additions this year.
This is going to be fun
once we step out on that
field,” Miller said. “You
don’t want to run when
you’re a quarterback;
you want to get the ball
out of your hands to the
athletes.”
So, for now, Meyer
and his staff will continue to monitor and
measure, rest and test
as the days to the first
game winnow away.
“I’m just resting up.
It’s being comfortable
with where I’m at and
making sure I’m not
overdoing what I need
to do with my injury,”
Miller said. “You have
to take it slow. You don’t
want to rush things.”
There’ll be plenty of
time for that when the
games begin.

New track for children, community

Stephen Littlepage, left, president of the Robert and Louise Claflin
Foundation, and Greg Fowler, president of the Mason County Board of
Education, are shown as they prepare to cut the ribbon signifying the
opening of the new walking/running track at New Haven Elementary
School. The track was built with funding from the Claflin Foundation and
will be used by both students and the community.

NEW HAVEN — A ribboncutting ceremony for a new
walking/running track was
held Tuesday evening at New
Haven Elementary School.
The track, located behind
the school, was built with funding from the Robert and Louise Claflin Foundation and will
benefit the students as well as
the community.
The ribbon signifying the
official opening of the track
was cut by Claflin Foundation
President Stephen Littlepage, as well as Mason County
Board of Education President
Greg Fowler. Littlepage told

those attending that the project received the single largest
grant amount to date from the
foundation of $18,000. He said
he was happy to see the track
come to fruition and knew the
Claflins would be pleased, as
well.
Principal Stacy Bissell also
spoke during the ceremony,
which was attended by members of the local board of education, county school officials
and Superintendent of Schools
Suzanne Dickens. Students
Connor Ingles and Amber
Wolfe were the first to run the
track, while NHES teachers
walked.
Bissell credited Amanda
Lieving for writing the grant

application. She was assisted
by Courtney Weaver, who also
secured the assistance of E&R
Excavating once the grant was
awarded.
The principal said the track
will be used by students during
school days, and will be open
to the public during evenings
and weekends. She said there
is a possibility that track teams
from Wahama High School will
use it for practice. The track is
regulation length, but is only
two and one-half lanes wide,
which will prevent its use for
meets. The area inside the
track is also regulation size,
according to Bissell.

Dr. Mohamed Khasawneh (center), medical oncologist and
hematology specialist from the Edwards Comprehensive
Cancer Center at Cabell Huntington Hospital, is welcomed to
Pleasant Valley Hospital by Glen Washington (left), PVH chief
executive officer, and Dr. Shrikant Vaidya. The ECCC will now
have a presence at PVH, offering cancer care and oncology
services in Point Pleasant and surrounding communities.

POINT PLEASANT — Comprehensive cancer
care’s physical presence in Mason County has
finally arrived.
Pleasant Valley Hospital and Edwards Comprehensive Care Center have teamed up to make cancer care even more accessible by offering oncology and hematology services at PVH.
Dr. Mohamed Khasawneh and Dr. Toni Pacioles, fellowship-trained medical oncology and
hematology specialists at the ECCC, have added
weekly visits at PVH to extend the care that is
offered by ECCC at Cabell Huntington Hospital
in Huntington. This decision is hoped to enhance
cancer care for patients in Point Pleasant and surrounding communities.
Patients cannot only see an oncologist at PVH,
but can receive chemotherapy, infusion services,
diagnostic testing and patient education — and
all under the guidance of the ECCC. In addition,
patients will have access to clinical trials.
“We are thrilled to offer ECCC-caliber services
to the Point Pleasant community,” said Glen
Washington, Pleasant Valley Hospital’s chief
executive officer. “This is an example of the types
of opportunities for new and enhanced health
care services that we envisioned last year when
we announced the partnership among Cabell
Huntington Hospital, Marshall University Joan C.
Edwards School of Medicine and Marshall Health
physicians.”
Both Dr. Khasawneh and Dr. Pacioles provide
care for patients with all types of cancers, as well
as blood and bleeding disorders. Their regular
presence at PVH offers cancer patients in the
Point Pleasant area quicker and more direct
access to ECCC’s highly specialized care, state-ofthe-art therapies and leading-edge clinical trials.
Dr. Khasawneh said he’s already had patients
who were traveling to Cabell Huntington Hospital
transfer their cancer care to PVH because it’s physically closer for them to receive that treatment.
“Patients are thrilled we’re here and it saves
them time,” Khasawneh said.
Washington said patients in Point Pleasant
and surrounding areas will now have a seamless
comprehensive cancer care plan at their disposal.
He added the ECCC’s growing cancer treatment
program at PVH is one the two hospitals hope to
grow together.

Gallia fair champion market steer

Connor Ingles and Amber Wolfe, students at New Haven
Elementary School, were the first to run the new track
Tuesday evening. The track, which was funded by the Robert
and Louise Claflin Foundation, was dedicated during the New
Haven Back-to-School Bash and Family Fun Night.

The New Haven grant was one of many
announced by Littlepage in December 2013,
when more than $105,000 was given to projects
in the county. Littlepage said the grant fell under
two focus areas of the foundation — personal
health and wellness, along with education. The
track will provide area residents and students a
way to learn a healthy lifestyle. Robert and Louise
Claflin reportedly wanted their charitable foundation to posthumously help community organizations in the county implement projects that would
enhance lives and promote community growth.

This 2014 Gallia County Junior Fair grand champion market steer, shown by Kaylee Lambert, was purchased by Ohio Valley Bank for
$5.25 per pound.

approved the incorporation of a new
PVH Medical Group. This is a joint
venture between PVH and Cabell
Huntington with 11 physicians who
are currently employed by PVH
being a part of the group. The goal
is to grow the group to 25 physicians

Washington said there are even
more plans in the works for PVH and
that a “wish list” of enhanced medical services, specialized treatment
options and equipment is never ending and always on the horizon.
“We’re doing exciting things here
that are having an impact on the

In addition to comprehensive
cancer services, Washington talked
about other enhancements to PVH
since the affiliation with Cabell Huntington Hospital late last year. These
include a new OBGYN starting in
September and a plan to add a midwife and offer midwifery services.
Urological services have also been
expanded to include the purchase
of the VersaPulse PowerSuite 100w,
which is the most powerful holium
laser available to be used in the

treatment of kidney stones. Dr. Shrikant Vaidya, urologist at PVH, has
recently undergone special training
to operate the machine that offers a
non-surgical alternative to the treatment of kidney stones.
Also, Washington said the cardiology program, with Dr. Timothy
Damron, cardiologist, as well as the
orthopedic program, have both seen
“great results.” He added there are
also plans to expand general surgery
options and Marshall Health is working on a residency program for medical residents to work at PVH.
There is also a push for physician recruitment and retention. In
May, PVH and Cabell Huntington
