the week ending the last week
of November, the state reported
only sporadic flu activity in
West Virginia but again, that has
changed to show regional activity at present.
Many physician’s offices perform what is called a rapid test
for influenza. These are swabs
that can tell if influenza virus A
or B are present. Oftentimes, if
these tests are positive, physician’s may prescribe anti-virals.
Anti-viral’s are medications that
attack the influenza viruses
and can shorten the duration
of the flu illness, but the antiviral must be taken within
the first 24-48 hours of the flu

symptoms. Symptoms of the flu
include sudden onset of fever,
chills, headache, extreme weakness or tiredness, body aches, a
dry cough, stuffy or runny nose
or a sore throat.
The nurses of the health
department also monitor the
absenteeism of students within
the public schools in Mason
County. Each week the nurses
receive the absenteeism rate
and determine the percentage of students absent. As the
percentage increases toward 20
percent, the nurses will call the
school to determine the causes
of the absenteeisms and may
help school nurses make phone

calls to the homes to determine
the illnesses.
Both of the aforementioned
activities help to predict when
flu may be circulating in the
county, as well as comparing
the influenza-like illness to the
week of the previous year.
The flu vaccination is the
best way to protect one’s self
from the flu. Other measures
people can take are to stay
home from school or work
when sick, avoid large crowds
during the flu season, cover
a cough and sneeze and, of
course, wash hands frequently
throughout the day.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall University Choral Union completed its fall season
with the performance of George Fredrick Handel’s
famous composition “Messiah.” Weekly practices
at Marshall University began in early September.
The chorus gave two performances last week at
the Fifth Avenue Baptist Chruch of Huntington.
Although the Tuesday evening performance was
well attended, there was not even standing room
on the Sunday afternoon performance.
The chorus was made up of 100 voices of both
vocal music majors from Marshall University as
well as trained voices from around the area. The
chorus was accompanied by a 30-piece orchestra
including pipe organ and harpsichord. Several of
the instruments were professors of instrumental
music.
Chris Kimes, formerly of Meigs County, performed on oboe. Keith Ashley, of Rock Springs,
sang in the chorus as a base.
Those attending the performance included June
Ashley, of Racine, Emma Ashley, of Rock Springs,
and Larry and Marjorie (Holter) Mickelson, of
Olive Hill, Ky.
“Messiah” includes choral numbers as well as
recitatives and oratorios for soloists. The composition was written in the 1700s during the Baroque
Period of music. It is challenging to the singers
due to the high range of the music for all parts.
The piece includes what is likely the most
famous work, “The Hallelujah Chorus.” When the
king of England heard it at its first performance,
he stood in honor of its brilliance. Since then, all
audiences stand for its performances.

Meigs EMS, local groups and businesses bring presents to children
By Lindsay Kriz

MIDDLEPORT —
Underprivileged and foster
children of Meigs County
will be receiving gifts-a-plenty this Christmas, thanks to
the efforts of Meigs County
EMS employees and local
businesses and organizations that donated money
for gifts.
This is the second
Christmas that EMS and
fire employees have collected donation money
and purchased toys and
coats for children before
delivering the presents to
Jobs and Family Services
in Middleport.
Capt. Eric Rock, with
Meigs County EMS,
helped organize the delivery of presents, and said
what his fellow employees
are doing is a great thing.
“It’s a great thing to
give back,” he said.
Local businesses
and organizations who
assisted Meigs County
EMS employees were
the Meigs County Firefighter Association, the
Columbia Township Volunteer Fire Department,
the Pomeroy Firemen’s
Association, Farmers
Bank and Savings Co. and
Walmart.
Chris Shank, director of Jobs and Family
Services, said this is the
second year that toy

EMS members wheel in a gurney with gifts on it to the Jobs and Family Services elevator. The gifts
were taken to the second floor and sorted from there. The elevator door had to stay open for at least
a minute to get all of the presents in the lift.

and coat donations have
been brought from Meigs
County EMS, and that
gifts are distributed based
on applications turned
in from families and
how many donations are
received. Each gift has
a tag on it that specifies
age group and gender.
“I think it helps get the
presents to the kids who
may not be able to get
what they want (otherwise),” he said.

Terri Ingels, Social Services supervisor, said that
through the Angel Tree
Project, which helped
pick out the types of gifts
for the children, more
than 300 Meigs children
have been serviced. Jobs
and Family Services will
remain open until noon
Christmas Eve, and will
be accepting calls for gifts
until then. Jobs and Family Services has families
that call in late every year,

so these gifts will be to
sponsor the ones who call
in late.
“It’s just wonderful for
the kids,” Ingels said.
“Without the support
of the community, this
project would not be possible, so we want to thank
everybody who helped
make it possible this year
and every year.”

THEIR VIEW

A Visit from
St. Nicholas
By Clement Clarke Moore

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all
through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with
care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their
heads;
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s
nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave a lustre of midday to objects below,
When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,
With a little old driver so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them
by name:
“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and
Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the
sky;
So up to the housetop the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas
too —
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a
bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his
foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes
and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his
pack.
His eyes — how they twinkled! his dimples,
how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a
cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the
snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke, it encircled his head like a
wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of
jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of
myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his
work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a
jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a
whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of
sight —
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good
night!”

THEIR VIEW

Letters of ‘Christmas’ are most important
By Paul Sebastian

For Ohio Valley Publishing

Every year, more and more of
Christmas is taken over by the
Grinch.
That is called “secularism,”
which intends to keep God out of
the public square, out of the community, out of the public school
regardless of community values,
and out of private business. They
give lip service to “religious freedom,” but keep your faith within
the walls of your church and the
privacy of your home.
The secularists will not concede any right for Christians and
their clergy to speak out on moral
issues that are not “politically correct,” even within the confines
of the church building under the
umbrella of so called “anti-bigotry
laws” — opposition to the homosexual lifestyle, even though those
with same sex attraction are most
welcome in the Church; opposition to same sex marriage; forcing Christian institutions against
Church teaching, businesses and
individuals to provide health insurance that include aborifacients,
contraceptives, and abortion itself
by government fiat and fines.
We are being overrun by secularism. In our culture today — originally very Judeo-Christian, but
now very secularized — prayer in
the schools is supposedly against
the Constitution; manger scenes
on public property are “illegal,”
and even saying “Merry Christ-

mas” is becoming taboo. There is
nothing in the Constitution about
the so called “separation of church
and state.” Thomas Jefferson first
used the term to protect churches
from government encroachment
and prevent an official religion.
But today, secularism and its collection of godless beliefs is slowly
becoming the de facto official
religion.
It’s OK to say “Merry Christmas.” Better yet is to wish people
a “Beautiful and blessed Christmas.” Saying “Happy Holidays” is
a surrender to secularism and so is
sending a Christmas card with no
relation to the birth of the Christ
child, who is the reason for the
season. Let’s send Christmas cards
with a genuinely Christmas theme,
not simply sleighs and snowmen.
That is also a profession of faith.
Sending Christmas greetings and
good wishes is really a small communication of love, remembering
and caring. Let’s look at it that way
and not simply as a required chore.
Perhaps we could make a concession to Hindu, Buddhist, and
Muslim friends and say “happy
holidays” to them as we invite
them to celebrate with us in our
Country which was founded as
a Christian country and still is.
Share with them the reason for the
season with an ecumenical spirit of
respectful interfaith dialogue and
ask them to share their religious
customs with us. If we should live
in India, Japan, or Saudia Arabia
they certainly would expect us to

respect their culture and not be
“offended” by manifestations of
their faith in public places.
The most important of all is
Christ and the Christmas Spirit.
It consists of peace and love for
all, forgiveness, reconciliation
with our enemies and adversaries
often within our own extended
families, charity, generosity, and
joy that only Christ can give. May
everything that we do in relation
to Christmas be directed toward
developing the Christmas spirit.
Then our Christmas will indeed be
happy, merry, and joyful.
Let’s look at Christmas the way
the angels announced the birth
of the Messiah to the shepherds.
“Glory to God in the highest and
peace on earth to men of good
will.” Let’s use Christmas and its
customs and everything we do in
the new year be all for the greater
glory of God (Ad majorem Dei gloriam”). That’s what Christmas is
all about — gratitude and celebration for God’s great gift to us, His
Son. Let’s bring the true, the good,
and the beautiful into Advent and
Christmas — not simply decorating, partying, and buying more
stuff.
Join the Knights of Columbus
campaign to put Christ into
Christmas — and Advent, too.
Let us not forget that the first six
letters of Christmas are the most
important.

management at the University of Rio Grande.

By Bryan Walters

Southern junior Jansen Wolfe (23) hauls in an offensive
rebound over Meigs defenders Danielle Morris (42) and
Bre Colburn, middle, during the first half of Monday night’s
finale of the 2014 Meigs Holiday Classic held at Larry R.
Morrison Gymnasium in Rocksprings, Ohio.

ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio — A 21-9
run over the final 11:21 of regulation
ultimately allowed the Southern girls
basketball team to pick up its fifth
straight victory Monday night during
a 49-37 decision over host Meigs in
the second game of the 2014 Meigs
Holiday Classic at Larry R. Morrison
Gymnasium in Meigs County.
The visiting Lady Tornadoes (6-2)
broke away from a 28-all tie with
a 5-0 run over the final 3:21 of the
third period, then closed regulation with a 16-9 surge to wrap up
the 12-point triumph. The loss was
also the third straight for the Lady
Marauders, who are now 3-4 overall.
The game featured three ties and

10 lead changes, most of which came
during the opening 16 minutes of
play. SHS jumped out to the largest
first half lead with a 10-5 advantage
after eight minutes of play, but Meigs
rallied with a 16-10 run to take its
third and final lead before halftime at
21-20 with 1:24 left.
Faith Teaford nailed two free
throws with 50.9 seconds remaining
until halftime, allowing Southern to
survive a 16-12 MHS run while taking
a 22-21 edge into the intermission.
The Purple and Gold followed with
a quick 4-0 spurt to increase their lead
out to 26-21 with 6:28 remaining, but
the Lady Marauders answered with
seven straight points to claim their
final lead of the night at 28-26 with
4:50 left in the third stanza.
Teaford again netted two free

throws at the 3:30 mark to knot
things up, then Ali Deem netted a
free throw at the 3:21 mark to give
SHS a permanent lead at 29-28. The
guests closed the quarter with four
straight points after baskets from
Jansen Wolfe and Teaford, allowing
Southern to take a five-point cushion
into the finale.
The Maroon and Gold were never
closer the rest of the way, as the
Lady Tornadoes twice opened leads
as large as 15 points in the final minute before ultimately wrapping up
the 12-point outcome.
Teaford won the Most Outstanding Player award for Southern, while
Kelsey Hudson also came away with
the same honors for the hosts.

URG men’s basketball
to host Christmas Camp

Johnny Manziel: “I’m
not the same guy”

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — The Rio Basketball Christmas Camp is scheduled for Dec. 29-31, from noon-2
p.m. each day, at the University of Rio Grande’s Newt
Oliver Arena.
The cost for the camp, which is open to boys and
girls in grades 2-8, is $40.
The camp will be conducted by Rio Grande men’s
basketball head coach Ken French, his staff and current members of the RedStorm program.
For more information, contact French at (740) 2457294 or e-mail kfrench@rio.edu.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Johnny Manziel says he
grew up during his first NFL season.
Manziel, who will not play in the Browns’ season finale
at Baltimore because of a hamstring injury, said Tuesday that he’s not the same person or quarterback who
first entered the league. The hyped rookie says it was a
mistake to come in with a “college mindset” and that he
intends to take his job “a lot more seriously” in the future.
Manziel didn’t play well in his two starts, and the
22-year-old said he’s motivated to improve in the offseason because “I want to be the guy here.”
Manziel said he doesn’t regret his behavior in the
offseason, but he vowed to be more committed in the
future. Manziel said he understands he may not “have

MLB average salary
exceeds $3.8 million

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball’s average
salary shot up to more than $3.8 million this year following
the steepest rise since 2001, putting big leaguers on track to
top the $4 million barrier for the first time in 2015.
The Major League Baseball Players Association said
Tuesday the average salary was $3,818,923, up from
$3,386,212 last year. The 12.78 percent hike was the
biggest since a 12.83 percent rise from 2000 to 2001.
Player salaries are spurting after several years of
more modest gains. The increase is fueled by record
revenue in the $9 billion range, much of it from

Staten leads No. 18 West
Virginia over Wofford
MORGANTOWN,
W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia’s Juwan Staten has
responded to naysayers
with his best two-game
stretch of the young
season.
The Big 12 preseason
player of the year recently saw a TV network’s
list of top 10 college
point guards — and he
wasn’t among them.
That upset him a bit and
he started doing something about it.
After scoring a seasonhigh 24 points Saturday
against North Carolina
State at Madison Square
Garden, Staten had 17
points and 10 rebounds
in No. 18 West Virginia’s
77-44 win over Wofford
on Monday night.
“I’m out to prove
everybody wrong,”
Staten said. “I just tried
to build upon the game
I had in New York. I
just wanted to keep the
momentum going.”
Behind Staten’s
scoring and a stifling
defense, West Virginia
(11-1) is off to its best
start since opening 11-0
during the 2009-10 season, when it reached the
Final Four.
The Mountaineers
used a strong start to
win their fourth straight.
Now coach Bob Huggins, who had lost his
final game heading into
the holiday break in two
of the previous three
seasons, doesn’t have to
worry about hiding from
his relatives this time.
“I have been absolute-

ly miserable,” he said.
“I had all of my brothers
and sisters over last year
and I had to go sit in the
bedroom and stare at
the wall for three hours
before I could even look
at anybody.”
Elijah Macon and
Jonathan Holton each
added 11 points, and
Jevon Carter scored 10
for the Mountaineers.
Macon, who lost his
mother last month and
didn’t play last season
due to an eligibility
issue, set a season high
for points.
“The last couple of
years have been hard on
the kid,” Huggins said.
“You can’t just let him
handle it alone. I lost
my mother and she was
the closest person in the
world to me. He wasn’t
allowed to practice last
year, he couldn’t play in
the games and he sees
all the guys he came in
with out there playing
— and it’s taken him a
while to get back into
basketball-playing condition.”
Wofford (9-3) wilted
under West Virginia’s
full-court press, committed a season-high 21
turnovers and was held
to its lowest scoring output this season.
Spencer Collins
scored 12 points and
Karl Cochran had 10 for
Wofford, which had won
four in a row.
West Virginia scored
16 unanswered points to
lead 18-2 just 7 minutes
into the game.

After big men Holton
and Devin Williams left
with two quick fouls,
the Mountaineers went
more than five minutes
between baskets. Yet
they never allowed Wofford to trim the deficit
to single digits.
The Mountaineers
shot 56 percent (15 of
27) from the floor in the
first half and led 42-20 at
halftime.
West Virginia held
Wofford without a field
goal over the first 6 minutes of the second half
and led by as many as 40
down the stretch.
“They’re very good
in areas I was worried
about,” Wofford coach
Mike Young said. “They
have some guys, holy
smokes, on both ends of
the floor. They’re physical.”
It marked the first of
four straight games on
the road for Wofford,
which doesn’t play again
in Spartanburg, South
Carolina, until its Southern Conference opener
Jan. 8 against VMI.
