(Edwin) Leon Saunders, 84, of Gallipolis, Ohio, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2023, peacefully with his family.
Leon was born to Otto and Frances Saunders on July 14, 1938, in Mercerville, Ohio, where he lived and attended school all through his youth. He worked hard in various positions over his lifetime, everything from driving trucks, to operating heavy machinery, to being a very good mechanic who could fix just about anything. A good part of his work career was spent working at Southern Ohio Coal Company, from which he retired after many years of dedicated service. Once he retired, he continued to be very busy by mowing lawns on his John Deere around the area. He was a soul who was generous, dependable, and was a helpful someone who would do anything for you.
In 1960, he married his wife Ellen (Rice), and they lived in Gallipolis. They were both faithful members of Faith Baptist Church in Rodney, Ohio.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen (Rice) Saunders of Gallipolis, mother, Frances (Beaver) Saunders of Mercerville; father, Otto Saunders of Mercerville; and brother, Lewis Saunders, of Gahanna, Ohio.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Kyle and Lara (Spears) Saunders of Fort Collins, Colorado; his niece and her husband Lee Ann (Saunders) and Jerry Strait of Huntsville, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
In his final days, Leon was cared for by family, neighbors, and friends, as well as the amazing people at Holzer Hospice, all of whom he was very thankful for. His son would like to extend thanks to Kelsey, Jan, Victoria, and Natali of Holzer Hospice, as well as to the wonderful nurses and staff of 4 East at Holzer, including nurses Rob, Jenna, Teddie, and Andrea; all of them helped so much with their care and compassion for Leon to make the last days of his life as peaceful as they possibly could. Thank you.
Services will be held at Willis Funeral Home, beginning with calling hours from 1:00-2:15 pm on Sunday, January 22, a funeral service beginning around 2:15 pm, and concluding with a procession to a brief graveside service at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Mercerville, Ohio around 3:15 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Leon’s name to either Holzer Hospice, 100 Jackson Pike, Gallipolis, Ohio or to Faith Baptist Church, 3615 Jackson Pike, Bidwell, Ohio 45614.
