Basil "Big Pete" Crews, 87, of Centerville, Ohio, passed away surrounded by loving family on Monday, February 27, 2023 at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He was born on December 27, 1935 in Gallia County, Ohio, son of the late Basil M. and Laura Marie (Lilly) Crews. Pete was a loving brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and a friend to many.
For over three decades, Pete was a dedicated employee for Goodyear and Shell Oil Companies. His finest memories were at the Highway Inn Truck Stop where he would work on semi trucks and eventually met his love, Maudie. Pete was a dedicated husband and caregiver to his wife, Maude; and when her mobility became limited, he would spend countless hours telling her entertaining stories.
He had a story for every landmark around the Gallia, Point Pleasant, and Rio Grande areas. Pete was known for his love of history and made it his personal mission to pass on the knowledge of the things he cared about. While he made his mark on many places over the years, his presence will linger at Mr. Mel Carter's thrift shop, where these two long-time friends would sip coffee and talk about the good ole days. Pete was a generous and selfless person, always lending a helping hand wherever he could.
Pete is survived by one son, Basil "Pete" Crews; two grandchildren, Stormie Crews (David Gloeckner II) and Braxton Crews; two sisters, Edith (Jim) Brewer and Wanda Terry; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Maude Ellen (Crump) Crews; two brothers, Chester Crews and Bobby Crews; and a brother-in-law, Robert Terry.
The memorial service for Pete will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2023 at Willis Funeral Home with Pastor Jane Ann Miller officiating. There will be a time to visit with the family at the end of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the funeral home to help with expenses.
