New Meigs Local buses scheduled for delivery
Charlene Hoeflich

choeflich@mydailysentinel.com

POMEROY — The Meigs Local School District will be receiving three new 72-passenger
school buses next week which are
expected to be ready to add to the
fleet already in operation late next
week.
That was the report of Dean
Harris, the district’s transportation director, at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday night.
Harris said the three buses will

need to have cameras installed after they arrive. Dean said student
pickup and delivery back home is
going well with the change from
double route pickups back to
single routing which is more economical. He also noted that most
buses are running an average of
60 to 65 students and said the students seem to have have adjusted
to the earlier schedule.
Dean also reported on the new
radio system which allows for
tracking the location of buses as
they move along their routes. He

did discuss some traffic tie-ups
in the afternoon with Superintendent Rusty Bookman and the
board making suggestions as to
how that problem might be alleviated somewhat.
Matthew Simpson, district
technology coordinator, gave an
update on computers and other
equipment, along with a report on
district network infrastructure,
district servers, maintenance and
programs. He also announced upcoming conferences, workshops
and training sessions and talked

about possibilities of starting a
video production club at the high
school. As for the website, Simpson reported hits totaling 6,392.
On Facebook, he said, there were
5,199 hits.
As for the wireless projects,
Simpson reported completion at
both the Middle and Elementary
Schools.
Personnel hired included Faith
Varney as a personal assistant for
a health handicapped student to
be paid from IDEA-B special education federal grant funds; Cas-

sady Willford, a volunteer football
coach for the season, and Christin
Miceli and Kevin Sheppard as tutors for health handicapped students.
Other personnel hired include
Marlene Pierce as a part-time ,
four hours a day, cook, with Laurie Graham, Gabrielle Kruskamp
and Janet Michael MElroy as
substitute cooks, and John Gaus

Bossard Library to feature paranormal expert
Amber Gillenwater

mdtnews@mydailytribune.com

GALLIPOLIS — Her
books sit amongst the most
well-thumbed at any library
— works that tap into the
paranormal and unknown
and leave a chill down their
readers’ spine — and, during
a special presentation this Friday, author and paranormal
investigator Sherri Brake will
take those lucky enough to
get a seat at Bossard Library
on a journey to some of the
most famous haunts of Ohio
and West Virginia.
Brake, who currently resides in Summersville, W.Va.,
is a haunted tour owner and
well-known expert in all
things paranormal, and, in
addition to instructing, lecturing and organizing ghost
hunts, she has worked with
shows such as the Discovery
Channel’s “Ghost Lab,” and
ABC’s “Most Terrifying Places on Earth.”
Friday’s presentation, that
will begin at 6 p.m. and will be
limited to the first 75 attendees due to space constraints,
will consist of a presentation
that will take the audience to
some of the most ghoulish
sites in Ohio and West Virginia including the Ohio State
Reformatory, West Virginia

Penitentiary, Athens Lunatic Asylum and Camp Chase
Cemetery.
According to Library Director Debbie Saunders, the
library’s focus was to bring in
an expert on this popular subject, who would not only thrill
the attendees, but also provide the history of the area’s
spookiest places.
“We wanted to make sure
that it was more about history
and folklore,” Saunders said.
“Some paranormal things can
be a little more on the dark
side — that’s really not what
we were going for. We were
going more for the paranormal folklore of this area.”
And Brake’s work is just
that, as exemplified in her
books, “Haunted Stark County: A Ghoulish History,” “The
Haunted History of the Ohio
State Reformatory” and her
most recent title, “The Haunted History of the West Virginia Penitentiary: Afterlife with
No Parole.”
According to Saunders,
Brake quickly came to the
attention of the library after
their search for a paranormal
expert began.
“We thought a paranormal
program would be very well
received because we see a lot
of interest in that. We have a
lot of books about paranormal

investigations and we see that
that section is always well
used,” Saunders said while
stating that they received rave
reviews of Brake’s presentations from another Ohio Library.
“We contacted another library who had had Sherri at
their facility for a series of two
programs,” she said. “The
presentations were very successful in that the library even
had to go to a larger venue
to have it rather than in the
library.”
Adult Services Associate
Lynn Pauley, who helps to
organize many of the adultoriented programs at the library, including Brake’s visit,
spoke of her early interest in
spooky tales while commenting that it is an intrigue with
the unknown that keeps library patrons coming back to
the “haunted” section of the
library.
“When I was in was little
and going into high school,
I read all of the ghost books
— I’m not sure I necessarily
believed them, but they were
really interesting,” Pauley
said “It’s the folklore that attracts people, but it’s not only
the history, but its a touch of
the unknown.”
In addition to her work at
other libraries, Bossard was

also interested in Brake’s
ability to tailor a program to
fit the area and provide the
haunted history of Ohio and
West Virginia.
Brake, who owns Haunted
Heartland Tours, leads sold
out tours to some of the most
historic haunts in the area,
including overnight stays at
the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic
Asylum and West Virginia
Pen, as well as night-guided
tours of the Massillon, Ohio,
cemetery.
According to Saunders,
Brake is a good fit for Bossard,
and hopefully, will only be the
first of many interesting adult
programs to come at the library.
“We just want to make sure
that we offer programs of a
variety of interests and this
program is different from a
lot we’ve had in the past, but
that’s what we’re trying to do
is grow our adult programing
and Lynn [Pauley] has been
very instrumental in that,”
Saunders said.

she said. “Jesus is acknowledged as the one and only

In addition to offering support for adults, Celebrate Recovery offers a curriculum for

with the adult meeting.

Union official: No vote NYC bans big,

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (AP) — A United Steelworkers
official in West Virginia says striking workers at Constellium Rolled Products won’t vote on the company’s latest
contract offer.
The company made the offer last week, two days after
both sides met with Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and U.S. Sen.
Joe Manchin in Charleston. Constellium says it expires at
midnight Saturday.
Nathan Nelson, a unit president for United Steelworkers
Local 5668, told WTAP-TV the union has notified the company it won’t put the offer to a ratification vote. He declined
to give a reason, saying “that’s union business.”
Nelson didn’t immediately return telephone messages
Thursday, but the union’s website indicates it has informational meetings with members scheduled for Friday.
Although Nelson says the union is willing to meet again,
company spokeswoman Laura Prisc said Thursday morning that no meetings were scheduled.
She did not immediately comment on the union’s decision not to vote on the latest offer but said a statement
might be issued later in the day.
Constellium’s aluminum rolling mill in Ravenswood is
Jackson County’s largest employer, with about 1,000 workers.
The strike, currently centered on proposed changes to
health insurance, is in its fifth week. Constellium now pays
100 percent of workers’ insurance premiums, but the new
offer would require employees to pick up 5 percent of that.
The latest offer also includes a $7,500 signing bonus,
$500 more than an earlier offer, as well as a 2.5 percent
wage increase for each year of the contract. Workers currently make about $19 an hour, which the union says is less
than peers at similar U.S. plants.
Ravenswood Mayor Michael Ihle told the Charleston Daily Mail he’s spoken to union members, and he believes they
should have the right to vote on the latest offer.
Constellium says it’s lost money for 11 of the past 13
years and needs to reduce expenses.

NEW YORK (AP) — New
York City’s Board of Health
opened up a new, experimental front in the war on obesity
Thursday, passing a rule banning sales of big sodas and
other sugary drinks at restaurants, concession stands and
other eateries.
The regulation, which
was proposed in the spring
by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and approved by panel
of health experts after several months of review, puts a
16-ounce size limit on cups
and bottles of non-diet soda,
sweetened teas, and other
calorie-packed beverages.
The ban will apply in fastfood joints, movie houses and
Broadway theaters, workplace
cafeterias, and most other
places selling prepared food.
It doesn’t cover beverages
sold in supermarkets or most
convenience stores.
The restaurant and beverage industries have assailed
the plan as misguided. They
say the city’s health experts
are exaggerating the role sugary beverages have played in
making Americans fat.
One board member, Dr.
Sixto R. Caro, abstained from
voting. The other eight board
members voted yes.

Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Some New Yorkers have
also ridiculed the rule as a
gross government intrusion
and tens of thousands signed
a petition, circulated by the
industry, voicing their opposition.
The unprecedented regulation would follow other ambitious health moves on Bloomberg’s watch.
Some have proven to be
national pacesetters, such as
making chain restaurants post
calorie counts prominently
on their menus; McDonald’s
announced Wednesday that
it would start displaying the
information nationwide next
week, before a federal requirement that could force all major
chains to do so next year.
New York City also has
barred artificial trans fats
from restaurant food and
taken aggressive steps to discourage smoking. Starting
this month, dozens of city
hospitals are asking mothers
of newborns to listen to talks
about why they should breastfeed instead of using formula.
Bloomberg and other advocates for the soda plan — who
include a roster of doctors
and such food figures as chef
Jamie Oliver — see it as another pioneering step for public health.

Bethel to honor military and This country has

first responders Sunday
TUPPERS PLAINS — Bethel Worship
Center will hold a special ceremony this
Sunday, September 16 during its regular
worship service at 10 a.m to honor all MidOhio Valley military and first responders
service personnel and their families in recognition of their ongoing sacrificial assistance to the public.
A free luncheon will follow, and a personal gift will be presented.
Noting the community’s heartfelt gratitude for their willingness to put their own
personal safety in jeopardy as they work
hard and selflessly sacrifice to protect the
public, Pastor Rob Barber invites all area
military, firefighters, emergency medical
personnel, police and law enforcement officers, and other first responders and their
families and friends to join the Bethel congregation’s annual tribute to these important public servants. “
We appreciate so much their sacrifices

and all they do to keep our communities
safe, and just want to let them know how
much we value them. As we mark this week
eleven years since the terrible events of
9-11-2001, we want to honor those who every day put themselves in harm’s way for
the rest of us,” Barber observed.
“Bethel will offer a small gift of appreciation for the service personnel, and provide
these special folks and their families a free
home-cooked meal after the service, with
church members sharing their own special
potluck dishes for the occasion,” Barber
added.
While not necessary, RSVPs with the
number in their party would be helpful from
personnel interested in staying for the luncheon, and can be sent to bethelwc@windstream.net or by calling (740) 667-6793.

Keeping calm and carrying on
Over the past week, especially, the news has been less
than hopeful. We marked the
11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. We
have also seen a very disturbing trend in the Middle East,
particularly related to riots at
our embassies. It is disturbing to see images that quickly
bring back memories of the
late 1970s. There is not much
the average person can do
about it. The fact that we know
it is not right and it should aggravate any American when
one of our ambassadors is
murdered along with Marines
trying to defend him. It is not
right and there is very little we
can personally do.
During World War II, Great
Britain was being bombarded.
It was terribly taxing on the
population. It was a horrible
ordeal, but the British people
soldiered on. They were not
going to be defeated by Hitler’s
air attacks. During this time
there were several slogans and
posters put up to help boost
morale among the people,
particularly in London. One of
the posters was very simple. It
read, “Keep Calm and Carry
On.” A graphic of a crown was
at the top of it. It was to be a reminder to the people that their
monarch was keeping calm
and carrying on. They could
too. It was not out for long and
until more recent times almost
all of the posters had been
thought to be lost.
What in the world does that
have to do with today? We are
in uncertain times. We can
easily allow the evening news
to become overwhelming, but
it is not just the evening news
any more. With cable news,
we now have a 24 hour news
cycle. The news comes quickly,
and is often run and re-run. It
can make for a very dismal life
if you saturate yourself with
it. Even the local news is not
great with all the crime and
drug activity reported. It can

Carrie Wolfe
become overwhelming. It can
steal our joy. It can make us see
nothing but the negative in this
world.
In the midst of hearing
about all of this activity in the
Middle East and the annual
footage of those awful memories of the attacks on the World
Trade Center, Pentagon and
Flight 93, a little baby was
born. Among the images on
my Facebook account of sadness and destruction, I saw
pictures of a beautiful newborn baby. It made me think.
We have encountered terrible
things before. We will encounter terrible things again. We
will go on. We will go on until
we are called into eternity.
While I was watching footage of our flag being torn apart
and set on fire, my cat took
a nap. Mrs. Beasley, found
a corner of the room where
I have a quilt folded up. She
quietly walked over, curled up
and settled in. She slept there
for hours. She slept. She slept
in complete peace and without
a single twitch. She was trusting that nothing would happen
to her. She had absolutely no
concern for anything going on
outside the living room. She
just went to sleep.
It is important to remember
that Mrs. Beasley is a cat. She

simply keeps calm and carries
on every day. She adapts to
her environment. She is a wise
old street cat we rescued and
she just keeps going. She also
knows when she needs us.
We need to remember these
two examples. We need to
have the resolve of the British people. We need to keep
calm and carry on. We need
to remember that above all is
someone greater. Mrs. Beasley remembers that. When
another cat or dog comes poking around outside, she knows
who will let her in. She knows
where sanctuary is and where
she can find peace and rest.
She knows there is someone
much bigger taking care of her.
We have to remember, especially as believers, that there
is someone bigger. The crown
above is not the British monarch, but the King of kings and
Lord of lords. He is the Great
I Am, the Prince of Peace. He
is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is
God the Father, God the Son
and God the Holy Spirit.
There will always be dark
days. God did not promise
there would not be. He did
promise to never leave us or
forsake us. We just need to remember that. We need to cling
to the hem of the Master’s garment. We need Him more than
ever. We need to look toward
the examples of the saints.
How many of them faced such
terrible afflictions and turbulent times? God was with
them. God is with us. Lean
on Him and pray for our nation. Pray for the Middle East.
Pray for Israel. Pray for one
another and pray for those that
would seek us harm. We are to
pray for our enemies. Oh, it is
not easy, but Jesus tells us to
pray for those who curse you.
We are to pray for those who
would persecute us. Pray. Be
strong in the Lord, keep calm
and by all means, carrying on
living a life of Grace Out Loud!

This week 11 years
ago, 31 men executed
what later was proven
to be a well-planned and
concerted plot. By that
one heinous deed, those
men and their cohorts
forever altered the mindset of most Americans
in regard to the Islamic
faith.
“We the people” who
survived that fateful day
learned some facts of life
our parents were themselves ignorant of.
After the initial shock
subsided, our collective consciences had to
process the fact there
are other peoples with
whom we share this
planet who do not like
us. Beyond our not being
universally acclaimed or
affirmed, some of our
fellow residents of planet earth absolutely and
unequivocally hate us!
Imagine that. Most
Americans
couldn’t
then; others still cannot.
It used to be that we
lived in dread of the peoples of the United Soviet
Socialist Republic, the
U.S.S.R.
Almost from the time
I started school, my education included lessons
to the effect the only
good Russian or “Commie” was a dead one. Of
course, these two terms
were treated as though
they were synonyms; if
the one, then the other.
Regardless of the terminology, these were
said to be evil and Godless people, and given
their known hostility to
God it made sense they
were anti-American, too.
After all, Americans in
the ‘50s and early ‘60s
openly professed their
belief in God and in this
country’s being a Christian nation — and saying otherwise was as
contemptible as blatantly disrespecting the flag.
Only fools made such
pronouncements in public venues, for “them
was fightin’ words!” In
that era when being a
redneck was a point of
pride, when it was okay

Thomas Johnson

to be an “Okee from
Muscogee,” it was not
so okay to speak disrespectfully of America.
In hindsight, Americans weren’t necessarily as tolerant then as
we may be today — although I’m inclined to
think we’ve done a 180,
and gone from one extreme to the other. Today, anyone can say just
about anything without
fear of retribution; the
scope of our “freedom
of speech” as set forth
in the Constitution and
endorsed by the courts
seems to have no limits.
America on this eleventh day of September,
in the year of our Lord,
2012, didn’t start out
as did this day eleven
years ago. That day was
what is known today as a
“game-changer.”
Forget the Russians,
the “Commies” and most
every previous enemy
of these United States.
Even as we rejoiced in
the tearing down of the
Berlin Wall, and imagined it was the end of
the “Red Menace” and
the beginning of a new
age in time — one of
world peace and universal brotherhood — our
heads were in the sand
about other matters, and
especially other adversaries.
Somewhere along the
line, we lost touch with
our Christian heritage
and allowed our patriotic fervor — long dormant in the wake of the
debacle known as the

Viet Nam Conflict — to
possess our hearts and
minds. Patriotism explains such things as
last Saturday’s celebration here, in Pomeroy,
honoring local veterans;
events like this are commonplace
throughout
our Land.
Celebrations for those
who serve in the Lord’s
Army — an expression
some may think of as
an oxymoron—are quite
rare. More’s the pity.
Believe it or not, in the
‘80s when revisions to a
certain hymnal were being considered, several
beloved hymns were at
risk of being excluded
because some felt they
were too militaristic, too
war-like for Christians to
sing.
Nonsense! Long before
there was an America to
be a citizen of there was
a Christ to be a disciple
of, the Lord of Hosts
to be in service to, a
Christian Church to be
a member of, the Body
of Christ to be a part of.
Since Jesus was regularly accosted and opposed,
let’s accept that we who
claim his name today
won’t be universally embraced, ourselves; that’s
not going to happen!
Let there be no paranoia in your life, but in
faith know today’s reality is we no longer need
fear an attack by the
Russians. The greatest
external threat to our
country are those who
oppose our being Christians — never mind
those in our midst who
are ignorant of the existence of God, or for
whatever reason won’t
submit to the Lordship
of Jesus Christ!
In the minds of radical Muslims, Christians
are vermin to be obliterated; it’s either Islam, or
death! We like to imagine
God is on our side, but is
He really? This country
has turned away from

Alex Hawley

ahawley@heartlandpublications.com

NELSONVILLE, Ohio — The
Belpre boys and Trimble Girls
took top prize at Wednesday’s
Nelsonville-York
Invitational.
Both Meigs and Eastern had runners compete but neither school
had enough runners to qualify in
the team competitions.
The boys competition was won
by Belpre with 27 points, followed by Lancaster with 32 and

Trimble with 77. Kennley Wolfe
won the boys race with a time
of 18:17.5, while his teammate
Cray Sistrunk took second with
a time of 18:23.5 and Lancaster’s Noah Bell finished third
with a time of 18:28.6. There
were 35 racers in the boys competition.
Eastern’s Tyson Long finished 14th overall with a time of
20:17.9 to lead the Eagles. Johann Wolfe (22:22.2) took 25th
place followed by Brock Smith

(22:26.7) at 26th to round out
the EHS runners.
The Marauders were led by
Brandon Mahr, who finished
15th with a time of 20:34.3, followed by Mitchell Howard, who
finished 17th with a time of
21:09.2. Forrest Nagy (21:23.2)
finished 20th, while Bradley Helton (22:37.9) finished 28th to
round out the Meigs runners.
Trimble was the only team with
enough runners to qualify for a
team score in the girls race. The

race was won by Trimble’s Kate
Spencer with a time of 21:39.0,
followed by Nelsonville-York’s Lily
Parsons (22:38.3) and Belpre’s
Ashley Carter (23:20.9). There
were 23 runner in the girls competition.
Keri Lawrence led the Lady Eagles with a time of 23:55.0, which
was good enough for a fourth
place finish on the day. Savannah Hawley finished sixth with
a time of 24:00.7, while Chantel
Barnhart had a 24:08.8 to finish

seventh and round out the EHS
runners.
Meigs was led by ninth place
finisher Haley Kennedy with a
time of 25:16.3, followed by 14th
place finisher Maggie Smith with
a time of 27:10.2. Tess Phelps
(28:07.8) finished 17th and Tara
Walzer-Kuharic (29:20.4) finished
19th to round out the MHS runners.

five players with TDs and
four players with 50-plus
yards rushing.
SGHS Defense Last Week:
341 rushing yds, 68 passing
yds.
Notes: Someone is coming away from this game
with its first overall and first
league win of 2012, which is
sorely needed by each program as both teams are allowing more than 43 points
per game defensively. The
Rebels have been outscored
134-48 in three games,
while the Falcons have been
beaten by a 130-33 clip
through three weeks. Miller
has surrendered at least 34
points in its three games
against Waterford, Eastern
and Crooksville — including at least 47 points in each
of its last two outings. Conversely, SGHS has allowed
at least 24 points in each of
its three setbacks. The Rebels had amassed 697 yards
of total offense in the first
two weeks before struggling
to reach 132 yards last week
versus Trimble, and South

Gallia is still looking for
its first win at the new stadium. Miller’s last win over
the Rebels came in a Week 5
contest in 2004, as the Falcons posted a 28-6 decision
in Mercerville. The Rebels
have never lost to Miller as
a member of the TVC Hocking Division.
Federal Hocking Lancers (2-1, 1-0) at Southern
Tornadoes (1-2, 1-1)

SHS Offensive Leaders
Last Week: RB Tyler Barton
(20-183, 2TDs), QB Tristen
Wolfe (1-9-11, 2 INTs), WR
Trenton Deem (1-11).
FHHS Defense Last Week:
118 rushing yds, 0 passing
yds.
SHS Defense Last Week:
194 rushing yds, 143 passing yds.
Notes: Southern has won
2 of the last 3 contests in
this matchup, with the home
team triumphing in the last
two meetings. The Lancers
last won back-to-back road
games in 2009 and haven’t
won three straight since
Weeks 2-4 in 2008. Following a heartbreaking 22-21
setback to Alexander in
the season opener, FHHS
topped Waterford (16-14)
before last weekend’s season-high 40-point effort on
the road at Hannan. The

TUPPERS PLAINS, Ohio —
The streaks continue … and another comes to an end.
The Eastern volleyball team
captured its ninth consecutive
victory over visiting Gallia
Academy Wednesday night during a 25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14
non-conference matchup at the
Eagles Nest in Meigs County.
The Lady Eagles (8-1) won
their fifth straight match of the
year and also posted their 22nd
consecutive home triumph over
a two-year span, and the hosts
also snapped the previously-unbeaten Blue Angels’ current win
streak at six matches.
There were a total of 13 lead
changes and eight ties in the
contest, as GAHS (6-1) avoided
a three-game sweep for the first
time in three seasons — despite
falling behind 2-0 early in the
match.
Game 1 featured six ties and
seven lead changes alone, as
the Blue Angels jumped out to
an early 5-3 edge. EHS countered with an 8-5 run to take
a small 11-10 lead, then gradually extended that margin out
to its 25-19 final. Eastern never

trailed in Game 2 and led by as
many as eight en route to taking a 2-0 match advantage.
GAHS responded with a furious 10-1 charge in Game 3, but
the hosts rallied back to knot
things up at 15-all. The Blue
Angels never trailed in Game
3 and closed things with a 10-5
run to pull within 2-1 in the
match.
Gallia Academy took leads of
1-0 and 2-1 in Game 4, but Eastern countered with a 15-6 surge
to establish a 16-8 cushion. The
Blue Angels never came closer
than six points the rest of the
way, and the Lady Eagles closed
things out with a 9-6 run to
wrap up the 3-1 match decision.
Kiki Osborne led the EHS service attack with 19 points, followed by Ally Hendrix with 10
points and Maddie Rigsby with
nine points. Erin Swatzel was
next with six points, while Gabby Hendrix and Jordan Parker

use of an ineligible player.

won 1 straight. NYHS 3-2
since 2002.

269 rushing yds, 141 passing yds.
Notes: After an 0-2 start
to the 2012 campaign, the
Buckeyes made the most
of their first road contest
of the season last week
— amassing 498 yards of
total offense while scoring
a season-high 62 points.
NYHS had five different
ball carriers accumulate 29
yards of rushing, and six
different players scored
at least one touchdown
in the triumph. The Raiders — who unsuccessfully
opened their new stadium
last week against Meigs —

almost matching their season output through the
first two weeks of the season. RVHS also committed
five turnovers last week

passing yds.
MHS Defense Last Week:
102 rushing yds, 253 passing yds.
Notes: After coming
away with Week 1 wins,
both Gallia Academy and
Marietta now find themselves looking to snap
a two-game losing skid
headed into this Week 4
contest. Both teams are
1-1 on the road and 0-1 at
home so far this season, although GAHS has played a
much tougher schedule
thus far. All three of the
Blue Devils’ previous opponents have a combined
record of 8-1, while Marietta’s first three opponents
have combined record of
4-5. Gallia Academy had
outscored opponents by
a narrow 72-69 margin
thus far, while the Tigers
are being outscored by a
69-96 clip through three
weeks. MHS was plus-1

in turnover differential
last week against the Big
Reds and also had eight
different wideouts catch

coming off season-highs in
points and offensive yardage, and both teams are
both unbeaten on the road
and winless at home this
year. Meigs is being outscored by opponents by a
68-72 clip through three
weeks, while THS has
managed a 107-45 edge in
points against opponents
during that same span.
Both teams have faced a 4-5
overall strength of schedule through three games.
Trimble had four rushers
gain over 34 yards last week
and also had two punt returns for touchdowns, a
field goal and a safety. THS
also seven different players score a touchdown in
last week’s win over South
Gallia. Meigs is coming off
its first win under first-year
coach Mike Bartrum.
Eastern Eagles (1-2,
1-1) at Waterford Wildcats (1-2, 1-1)
Last Week: Eastern 47-7
loss at Wahama; Waterford
63-13 loss at Fort Frye.
Last Meeting: 2011, Waterford won 20-12 at Eastern.
Current
head-to-head
streak: Waterford has won
1 straight. Waterford leads
series 6-4 since 2002.
EHS Offense Last Week:
127 rushing yds, 303 passing yds.
WHS Offense Last Week:
204 rushing yds, 18 passing
yds.
EHS Offensive Leaders Last Week: RB Joey
Scowden (23-55), QB Joey
Scowden (20-34-303, TD, 3
INTs), WR Max Carnahan
(6-85).

WHS Offensive Leaders Last Week: RB Andrew
Lang (12-64), QB Brian
Moore (2-8-18), WR Wyatt
Porter (2-18).
EHS Defense Last Week:
391 rushing yds, 70 passing
yds.
WHS Defense Last Week:
263 rushing yds, 212 passing yds.
Notes: The home team
in this series has lost the
last two contests, and the
Eagles have won two of the
last three overall. The Wildcats will be making their
home debut after playing
three straight road games
to start the 2012 campaign,
which included a win at
Miller (34-14) and losses to
both Federal Hocking (1614) and Fort Frye. WHS has
been outscored 61-93 overall this fall, which includes
a season-worst 63 points allowed last week at Fort Frye.
Waterford did have four different ball carriers amass
at least 29 rushing yards
last week, but it also committed the only turnover in
last week’s contest. Eastern
dropped a 28-13 decision at
home to Symmes Valley in
the opener, then rebounded
with a convincing 47-6 win
over visiting Miller in Week
2 before falling last week in
its first road game. EHS has
been outscored 67-81 by
its opponents, who have a
combined record of 5-4. Waterford’s current strength
of schedule sits at 4-5 overall. Despite an impressive
430 yards of total offense
last week at Wahama, the
Eagles committed the only
four turnovers in that contest.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Friday,
Sept. 14, 2012:
This year you have a great deal of
power behind your words. The New
Moon is close to your birthday, which
allows you to manifest your desires.
You need to understand what you
want to create in order to use this
lunar power to the max. If you are
single, you do not need to worry -- you
will have many suitors. Your knee-jerk
response will be the one you choose
to listen to. If you are attached, the
two of you relate well as always,
though you might be accused of
being too me-oriented. That criticism
probably isn’t too far off. Remember,
a relationship is about two people.
VIRGO can be critical.

might be overwhelmed as a result.
You — a person who usually is so

which way to turn. You might need to
revamp your plans. Tonight: Flex once

work. Don’t restrict your mental meanderings, though you might choose not
to share them. Tonight: Get into weekend mode.

to home and not have a reason. Trust
your intuitive sense, and you will be
on top of a situation. Confusion surrounds many of your key interests
or projects. A partner can help you
reduce them. Tonight: At home.
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
HHHH You could be seeing a personal situation a lot differently, given
time and a sense of direction. A partner or associate might want to revamp
plans, as he or she could be unsure
of him- or herself. Let this person put
some structure into the here-and-now.
Tonight: You need a leisurely dinner.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
HHH Be aware of your expenses,
as you easily could make a mistake
counting change. Extravagance might
seem essential, but be careful as
to what this might be doing to your
budget. Stay mellow with a controlling
situation; do not allow it to get to you.
Tonight: Your treat.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
HHHH You might change your
plans, as you feel inspired and more
energized than you have in a long
time. Others could seem helpless and
unable to convey what is going on
in their minds. You change the way
people think in a discussion, but they
impact your thoughts as well. Tonight:
Whatever feels good.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
HH You might want to play a
situation low-key and handle it more
directly. Your sense of humor plays
a significant role when dealing with
a perpetually changing matter. Your
instincts guide you even more than
usual. Tonight: Choose something for
yourself.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
HHHHH You have a unique
style and way of communicating.
Unbeknown to others, you have a certain idea or sense of how a situation
could unravel. Do not be surprised if
there is a mishap out of the blue. Be
willing to make adjustments. Tonight:
Hang out.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
HHHH Your ability to step right in
will be tested, and, with the amount of
mixed messages that surround you,
you might not be sure which way to
turn. Extremes mark others’ behavior.
Do not get involved with risky money
matters. Tonight: A must appearance.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
HHHH You know what needs to
happen. You might attempt to open
up your thinking, as well as others’.
Sometimes a vision might be too difficult to explain, which forces you to
take the lead even if you might be
uncomfortable with it. Tonight: Go
where there is music.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
HHHH If a partner wants to
assume the lead, make it OK. You
could feel as if you do not have the
control you want. Listen to news more
openly. You could be changing certain
judgments without realizing it. Please
note the different reactions you get as
a result. Tonight: Go with a suggestion.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
HHHH You might feel out of sorts
when trying to make a decision that
has many variables. Be aware of a
friendship that is changing. Learn to
grow with this person, and listen to
him or her more often. Dismiss former
judgments. Tonight: Follow a suggestion.
