Middleport Street paving to begin Monday
Charlene Hoeflich

choeflich@mydailysentinel.com

MIDDLEPORT — The
patching and paving of Middleport streets damaged in
the process of the $7.5 million sewer line replacement
project will begin next week.
Middleport Mayor Michael Gerlach said Monday
the process of getting the
streets back in order will
begin but that with it will
come some change in the
flow of traffic in the village.
Since North Second

through the business section is the most traveled,
the work will begin there
on Monday. In the section
between Rutland and Mill
Streets the temporary patch
in the sewer line trench will
be removed and the base
cement will be poured. The
work will require both lanes
to be closed so it will be
done in the evening, Gerlach said.
On Thursday, according
to the schedule, both lanes
of that same section of

North Second Street will be
ground to take care of rough
places. That work will be
done during the daytime.
The lanes will be done separately, however, so one lane
will always be open around
the work site. The grinding
material being removed will
be used to improve the road
in Riverview Cemetery.
On Friday of next week,
both lanes of the same section of North Second will be
paved. That work, Gerlach
said, will be done during

the day but again only one
lane at a time will be closed.
The mayor stressed that
semi-trucks or other heavy
vehicles will not be allowed
on the new paving for one
week while it sets up. Businesses needing deliveries,
he said, should route their
trucks to avoid that section
of North Second during that
time.
The weather could change
the schedule somewhat, he
added.
The only street to have

full repaving will be North
Second. On the other streets
everything will be smoothed
out, holes will be filled,
bumps ground down, and
gravel removed, and then
those sections will be repaved.
The patching and paving
project is the final step in the
village’s project to comply
with the Ohio Environmental
Protection Agency’s (EPA)
requirement to separate the
village’s sanitary sewer and
storm sewer, and reduce the

number of overflows into the
Ohio River. That mandate
came down several years ago
but funding became available only last year.
Groundbreaking for the
project, fully funded by the
EPA through a loan forgiveness program, and other
grants awarded to the village, took place on Monday,
Oct. 24, 2011. The general
contractor on the project is
Mike Enyart and Sons, Inc.
The entire project is now in
the finishing-up stage.

RACINE — The use of
technology in the classroom took a big step
forward this school year
in the Southern Local
School District.
The district recently
purchased 200 iPads to
be used in the kindergarten, first and second
grade classrooms.
Southern Elementary
Principal Scott Wolfe
stated that the iPads are
being used in the classrooms instead of workbooks. Wolfe added that
workbooks often do
not match up with the
standards being taught
in the classroom, but
due to the cost teachers
felt the need to use the
books if purchased.
The iPads allow for
apps to be downloaded

which match exactly to
the standards taught in
the classroom.
Each class, kindergarten to second grade, has
an iPad for each student
to use on a daily basis.
Teachers can chose
apps that meet their particular classroom needs
to be downloaded. Once
the app is downloaded
on one of the iPads in
the classroom, the iPad
is synced with the rest
of the set, according
to first-grade teacher
Dawn Hill.
Hill stated that her
class uses the iPads to
assist with math skills.
Wolfe said that the
iPads provide a good
academic tool and a
technology tool for the
students. The use of

POMEROY — Residents
from the village spoke to
council regarding several
concerns during a recent
Pomeroy Village Council
meeting.
Nora Ellis, a a resident of
Condor Street, read a letter
signed by nearly all of the
residents of Condor Street
with regard to the village
making a portion of the
road a two-way street.
Ellis stated that residents
are concerned about a decision made during the previous meeting which allowed
for two-way traffic from
Spring Avenue to Plum
Street on Condor Street.
Residents were concerned
about drivers possibly believing the two-way portion
of the road was a larger area
than just the single block,
and therefore driving the
wrong way on the one-way.
Ellis said that there have
been numerous driver going
the wrong way on portions
of the road.
The village stated that
additional signs would be
put in place making the por-

tions of the road which are
two-way versus one-way.
Signs were also to be placed
at other locations on Condor Street, including the
exit from the new Farmers
Bank location.
Police Chief Mark Proffitt
said the department would
watch for speeders and drivers going the wrong way.
Members of council expressed that they would like
to hear back in a month or
two as to how things are going.
Eddie Baer also spoke
with council about the continued work around his
property in the downtown
area.
Baer stated that the ongoing projects near Mechanic
Street have caused damage
to his property which was
not repaired.
Council put Baer in contact with Project Engineer
Mitch Altier of ME Companies who oversees the projects.
Baer also told council he
had signed an easement

Ask Dr. Brothers

Age-gap dating makes her uneasy
Dear Dr. Brothers:
Against my better judgment, I met a much younger man on an online dating site. When we met, we
joked about our 20-year age
gap, but to my surprise, he
asked me out again. This
has been going on for a few
weeks, and I find myself attracted to him, and he feels
the same. I don’t think any
good can come of this, but
when I am with him at his
place, I feel so good! Please
give me the reasons not to
pursue him. I seem to have
forgotten them! — B.W.
Dear B.W.: You need
someone who can crunch
the numbers to tell you that
this relationship isn’t going
to add up? It’s pretty obvious that your head is telling
you to be prudent and reasonable and date someone
more age-appropriate. But
it’s just as plain that your
heart says otherwise and
you need some help in keeping that train in the station.

So I am glad to

You’re at a moment in
Dear Dr. Brothers: I’ve

you get older, and you’re admires my skill and comlikely to feel even more petence at my job. What he
doesn’t know is that I see a
therapist weekly and am on
medication for depression
and anxiety. He has said
several times that he can’t
stand women with a lot of
“issues” and “baggage,” and
he’s glad I am so centered.
So far, I haven’t said anything about my problems.
Should I tell him I’m not as
perfect as he thinks? — K.S.
Dear K.S.: It seems that
your boyfriend has formed
an impression of you that
doesn’t quite encompass all
that you are. He’s looking

for a fairy princess, and you
think he will consider you a
toad — warts and all — if
you don’t continue to play
a role. Everyone wants to
make the best impression
possible in the early stages
of a relationship. As you
get to know one another,
some of the masks drop
and you fill in the blanks
with bad habits, unpleasant mood swings, selfish
behavior or what have you.
If you’re lucky, what you see
is what you get — but that
often isn’t the case. Even
so, it doesn’t have to mean a
death knell for the couple to
admit they are human.
Since your boyfriend
already has a great first
impression based on your
accomplishments and behavior at work, he’s unlikely
to view you as being burdened with baggage or inferior because you seek therapy for problems. Perhaps
you even can enlighten him
about how helpful therapy
can be when one’s baggage
is too heavy. It’s time you
stopped worrying about
what he thinks of you and
concentrate on having an
honest and open relationship in which neither of you
is judging the other. If he
can’t let go of his prejudices
after knowing you and your
story, then I would say his
unrealistic standards will
very likely leave him — not
you — high and dry.

White-tailed deer impacted by disease
EHD occurs annually in deer
herds across North America
AKRON — State wildlife
and animal health officials
have confirmed localized
outbreaks of a common
white-tailed deer disease in
eight Ohio counties including Ashtabula, Columbiana,
Geauga, Holmes, Paulding,
Portage, Ross and Summit.
Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Animal Disease
Diagnostic Laboratory confirmed that of the 20 samples, 13 deer had epizootic
hemorrhagic disease (EHD).
State animal health officials
stress EHD occurs annually
in deer herds across North
America. A similar hemor-

rhagic disease called bluetongue has been known to
occur throughout the United States and Canada, but
should not be confused with
EHD. There are no cases
of bluetongue disease confirmed in Ohio.
White-tailed deer contract
EHD from the biting midges,
which typically live near water. White-tailed deer, along
with mule deer, elk, bighorn
sheep and pronghorn antelope are susceptible to the
disease.
The disease is not spread
from deer to deer or from
deer to humans. Once in-

fected, deer show symptoms
within five to 10 days. Infected deer initially lose appetite
and fear of man, grow progressively weaker, often salivate excessively and become
unconscious. Many deer die
within 36 hours of the onset
of symptoms.
Midges can also spread
EHD among cattle and
sheep. These outbreaks may
occur at the same time deer
are being impacted. However, this is not a case of the
disease spreading from deer
to livestock or vice versa,
but is an indication that the
biting midges are present
in large enough numbers to
spread the disease.

that although this disease
does not affect humans nor

report deer that appear to be
sick or diseased to their local

The disease is common

was first identified in 1955 in

COLUMBUS — Forecasting the vivid
oranges, reds and yellows of changing
leaves during the fall season is not always predictable, but beautiful fall color
will surely be visible in Ohio this year.
Casey Burdick, fall color forester for the
Ohio Department of Natural Resources
(ODNR), says Ohioans can expect to
see the state’s woodlands awash in a rich
palette of textures in hues – barring any
major wind or rain storms.
Fall foliage forecasters must take into
account several variables such as sunlight, temperature, wind and rainfall
when calculating the brilliance and longevity of Ohio’s autumn color. Bright,
sunny September days and cool nights
tend to make the red, orange and bronze
colors in leaves more intense. Early frosts
often cause trees to prematurely build a
barrier between the leaves and branches.
This barrier – known as an abscission
layer – prevents carbohydrates and water

Face-to-face relationships are best
With all the opportunities
we have to connect with others through social media,
being face-to-face has been
pushed aside. Spending
time with someone face-toface has its benefits. Often,
we forget the splendor of a
good debate and the subtle
emotions we can not read
via texting. Sitting down
with someone and connecting with them should never
go out of fashion.
When we take the time
to sit down and talk with
someone, we can get to
know them. When we shut
out the distractions of the
world and listen, we can
learn something from this
person. Parents need to
set their phones aside and
let Facebook go when their
kids are talking to them.
Sometimes I get caught up
in the online world too, but
living for the world wide
web is not really living, is
it? Building a relationship
requires time and commitment. It requires those
hours of conversation and
getting to know the other
person.
What about God? Getting
to know God takes more
than an occasional Sunday
visit. It requires getting to
know the Lord. How do we

Carrie Wolfe
do that? Study of the scriptures, spiritual classics, and
intellectual discussions with
others can help us grow in
a deeper relationship with
the Lord. Spending time in
His true presence is another. Spending time in quiet,
contemplating the Creator
is an incredible experience.
Never underestimate time
spent in quiet. How little
we have quiet in our daily
lives with television, radio,
and the Internet so easily accessible. We have the
tools and the means to build
a relationship with the Lord
Jesus Christ for all eternity,
if we choose to.
There in lies the trouble.
We have a great opportu-

nity, but we have to choose
the relationship. We not
only have to choose, we
have to go with the attitude and heart to commit
to a relationship. We may
have friends, but we need to
spend time with them and
build the relationship.
Maybe the relationship
you have with the Lord is
more on the surface. Maybe
He is just an acquaintance,
but then is it enough? Is it
enough?
At some point, it wasn’t
enough for me. I had to go
deeper. I had a desire for the
truth. I still do. I hope you
find that relationship with
the Lord if you do not have
one. I hope you renew it, if
it has gone cold. I hope that
if you have not seen an old
friend in awhile, you make
time to sit down over a cup
of coffee. Build relationships
and grow in grace through
discussion. Talking about
the faith is always exciting. Take that step to spend
time face to face. Take the

you. Grow in the faith and

Remember the day
Dear Dave,
I have been giving it
some thought since last
Friday evening when you
approached me and said, “I
wish you would do something to help the two of us
to remember the day.” So, I
have set myself to write this
open letter to you. After all,
it would not bode well for
me to forget the day again
like I did last year, and it
would not bode well for you,
either, if you would happen
to forget.
We have some outside
help, you know. Mr. Luther Tucker of Mason has
already provided some
sharp reminders. He told
me twice during the course
of the year that he was going to make sure that I did
not forget the day like I did
last year. He has particularly
made it a point since the
very onset of this month.
When he realized recently
that you and I have the day
in common, he promised to
make sure that you did not
forget, as well. Personally, I
appreciate his reminders.
I would tend to think,
however, that if the two of
us kept all the busy points
of our days in proper perspective, we would have no
problem in remembering
the day and the importance
of it. Constant focus on the
mundane and the routine
certainly has an affect on
remembering the more
important matters of life, I
suppose.
It rather sets in stark contrast the time a few months
back that I spoke to someone about Sunday morning worship, “I sure missed

Ron Branch
Pastor

you in church this morning.” Their reply was a bit
of a surprise to me, “That’s
right. It is Sunday, isn’t it? I
have been so busy this week
that I forgot all about the
day.” I responded with incredulity, “Tell me how inthe-world could one who
professes Christ forget the
day?”
After all, remembering the day is a command
of God, who stipulates,
“Remember the Sabbath
day to keep it holy.” One
of the prime principles of
this command from God
is taking part in corporate
worship on a weekly basis.
“His habitation you shall
seek, and there you shall
go.”
Remembering the day
is essential for keeping
us in contact with God.
Remembering the day as
we should is the apt recognition that God is our
Creator. Within the very
context of the command,
our Creator God reminds

us, “For in six days the
Lord made Heaven and
earth, the sea, and all that
in them is.”
Remembering the day
as we should is the apt
recognition that God has
provided the means for
us to have fellowship with
Him. Within the very context of the command, our
gracious God reminds that
worship is “a sign” of proactive and on-going fellowship with Him.
Remembering the day
as we should is the apt
recognition that He is our
Savior by way of what His
Son, Jesus Christ, did for
us when He died on the
Cross and rose from the
dead. Within the very context of the command, God
reminds us that He has
redeemed us “by an outstretched arm; therefore,
the Lord your God commanded you to keep the
Sabbath day.”
We should not only remember the day because
He said to do so, but we
should remember the day
primarily because of all that
He has done on our behalf.
We have responsibility to
remember the day, and we
better make it a specific
point to remember it.
By the way, as it concerns
Monday, what are you getting your wife for her birthday? I have something for
my wife’s birthday on Monday, too. And, I am making
sure I don’t forget my wife’s
birthday like I did last year.
Prayerfully, I have helped
you remember the day like
Mr. Luther has been in the
process of helping us.

Make it a Good Day!

Search the Scriptures “These were more noble…they searched the scriptures daily…”
“My people are destroyed for
lack of knowledge.” says God,
through the prophet Hoseah, and
He continues, “Because you have
rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me;
Because you have forgotten the
law of your God, I also will forget
your children.” (Hosea 4:6)
The Gospel of Christ is the
power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16). It is the foundation
of Faith (cf. Romans 10:17). It
provides all that we need for life
and godliness (cf. 2 Peter 1:3);
instructing us and guiding us so
that we are thoroughly prepared
for every good work (2 Timothy
3:16-17). We cannot have a proper
relationship with God, the Father,
without first having an understanding of, and adherence to, His
divine doctrines (cf. 2 John 1:9).
Which is why, to the man of understanding, God’s word is a precious thing and those who preach

it are among the most precious of
people. As Paul reminds us, “As it
is written: ‘How beautiful are the
feet of those who preach the gospel
of peace, who bring glad tidings of
good things!’” (Romans 10:15)
Not all have such an understanding. There are those who do
not want the word preached. They
do not want correction, reproof,
instruction in righteousness,
or the doctrines of God’s word.
Some of these will heap up for
themselves teachers, which will
tell them what they want to hear
(cf. 2 Timothy 4:3-4). Some might
politely tell the preacher, “Preacher, don’t preach,” while others will
be more forceful in turning away
their ears, perhaps even by turning upon the preacher.
Micah prophesied against those
who told the prophets, in his day,
“Do not prattle,” warning them
that they would get their wish
and that the prophets would grow

quiet and leave the people in their
ignorance and their sins (cf. Micah 2:6). In a similar vein, Jesus
instructed His followers to behave
as follows: “If the household is
worthy, let your peace come upon
it. But if it is not worthy, let your
peace return to you. And whoever
will not receive you nor hear your
words, when you depart from that
house or city, shake off the dust
from your feet.” (Matthew 10:1314) This does not mean that those
who chase away the preachers
are safe. Of such, Jesus goes on
to say, “Assuredly, I say to you,
it will be more tolerable for the
land of Sodom and Gomorrah in
the day of judgment than for that
city!” (Matthew 10:15) God is not
going to force His word on those
who will not receive it. He will allow men to turn their ears away
from it, for a time. But that does
not mean that God finds such
behavior acceptable, nor will He

hold such men blameless for their
actions. Again, as He said through
Hosea, “My people are destroyed
for lack of knowledge.” If we reject
a knowledge of God’s word, He
will reject us. If we forget what
God has taught us, He will, in sorrow, leave us, and those who come
after us, to our ignorance. We will
be counted among those that perish, because we did not receive a
love of the truth, that we might be
saved (cf. 2 Thessalonians 2:10).
God does not want us to perish (cf. 2 Peter 3:9) nor does He
delight in the death of the unrighteous (cf. Ezekiel 18:32). He
pleads with us to “turn and live.”
But He pleads with us through
His word and if we will not listen
to His pleas and His instruction,
as given in His word, we are without hope.
Let us not be counted among
those who would silence the
Word of God, removing the voices

preaching the truth from amongst
our number. Such as follow such a
path eventually and subsequently
perish. Let us instead say with the
Psalmist, “He is our God, and we
are the people of His pasture, and
the sheep of His hand.” and understand the admonition, “Today, if
you will hear His voice: ‘Do not
harden your hearts.’” (Psalms
95:7-8a) Let us heed that counsel
which says, “Crave the pure milk
of the word,” (1 Peter 2:2a) and
“hold fast the pattern of sound
words.” (2 Timothy 1:13). Let us
be able to truthfully say that our
delight is in the law of the Lord
and on that Law we meditated
day and night, so that all that we
do may prosper (cf. Psalms 1:23). If you have a love of the truth,
and a desire to know the word
of God, we invite you to worship
and study with us at the church
of Christ, 234 Chapel Drive, Gallipolis.

URG women’s soccer blasts Patriots, 9-3
Randy Payton
Special to OVP

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — One week
after a record-setting win against Kentucky Christian University, the University of Rio Grande women’s soccer
team found itself taking an eraser to
the program’s history book once again.
Kasey Crow equaled a school record
with four goals and assisted on another to lead the RedStorm in a 9-3 rout
of the University of the Cumberlands,
Wednesday night, in Mid-South Conference action at Evan E. Davis Field.
Crow tied the single-game mark for
goals which was established in last
week’s win over KCU by fellow freshman Courtney Young.
Crow did set a new school record for
points in a game with nine - two for
each of the four goals and one for the
assist.
The nine goals scored by Rio also
set a new single-game team record,
topping the previous mark of seven
set in last Wednesday’s 7-1 triumph at
Kentucky Christian.
The RedStorm improved to 4-4 overMiscellaneous

all and 1-1 in the MSC with the victory,
just four days after being on the short
end of a 9-0 shellacking at the hands of
Cumberland (Tenn.) University.
Crow’s big night overshadowed an
outstanding individual performance
by one of her teammates, junior forward Alex Davis, who had three goals
and an assist of her own.
Davis’ assist came on a goal by senior defender Venessa Montgomery
just 8:50 into the contest and gave the
RedStorm a 1-0 lead.
Crow and freshman midfielder Taylor Ahrens scored unassisted goals
just 25 seconds apart to make it 3-0,
before the Patriots got on the board at
the 16:09 mark when Ginger Johnson
scored on the rebound of her own miss
on penalty kick.
Davis got her first goal just 12 seconds later and scored again off an assist by Crow at 18:40 to extend the
RedStorm’s lead to 5-1.
Crow scored again, rifling a shot
past Cumberlands goal keeper Autumn
Williams from 12 yards out on the
right wing, to push the cushion to 6-1
with 10:14 remaining before the inter-

mission. Senior defender Katie Fuller
was credited with an assist on the play.
Crow earned hat trick honors with
an unassisted marker just under eight
minutes into the second half, but the
Patriots (2-4, 0-2) scored again when
Toni Dempsey found the net on another penalty kick attempt, slicing the
deficit to 7-2 at the 61:45 mark.
Davis completed her hat trick and
established a new team scoring mark
just over two minutes later with an
unassisted goal, before Cumberlands
got its final tally of the night at 71:16
when Esme Purkis scored off of a loose
ball in the front of the net following a
corner kick.
Crow rounded out the scoring and
tied Young’s record with her fourth
goal of the night with 6:35 left in the
contest.
Rio outshot the Patriots, 17-9. All
but one of the RedStorm’s shots were
on goal.
Sophomore net-minder Allison Keeney stopped two shots en route to her
fourth win in five decisions. Williams
had five of her team’s seven saves in a
losing cause for Cumberlands.

CONCEPTIS SUDOKU
by Dave Green

HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Friday, Sept.
21, 2012:
This year you focus on your domestic and personal life, though all aspects
are important. Excitement comes in
from a close friend or loved one who
is a walking jack-in-the-box; you never
know what will happen next. Hopefully,
you can deal with a little stress. Others
would like you to be more active, and
they will not hesitate to let you know. If
you are single, you will gain a sidekick.
Whether you let more than that develop is your call. If you are attached, the
two of you need to loosen up more
and enjoy the moment. SAGITTARIUS
loves to romp with you.
The Stars Show the Kind of Day
You’ll Have: 5-Dynamic; 4-Positive;
3-Average; 2-So-so; 1-Difficult
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
HHHHH Let your imagination lead
the way. Be ready to take off at the
drop of a hat. Others tap into your
ideas and use you as a resource. You
might want to break free, and perhaps
you’ll do just that. Maintain a high
level of detachment, or you could feel
drained. Tonight: Go for something
unique.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
HHH You deal with others directly,
particularly a key person in your life.
You could enhance a financial option
through a discussion. A family member
lets you know how much you mean to
him or her. If there has been a rocky
element in your domestic life, attempt
to fix it. Tonight: Make it cozy.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
HHHHH Realize where you are
heading and defer to someone else.
You understand that not everything is
one way or the other. This realization
helps you to loosen up your relationships with some potentially difficult
people. Tonight: Play away.
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
HHHH You are one of the few
people whose focus is less on getting
into the weekend and more on completing errands and/or a project. For
those of you who are working Moon
Children, you will want to clear out your
desk. Think about being totally free this
weekend. Tonight: Only what you want.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
HHHHH Allow more creativity
to come forward. Through a meeting, you’ll see many possibilities.
Opportunities arise from this group of
peers, especially through one person
who is unusually upbeat. You emanate
compassion and concern. How can
anyone resist you? Tonight: Start the
weekend right.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
HHHH Center yourself, and you will
open the door to many more opportunities. Someone in your personal life
— or someone who wants to become
a part of it — shares some deeper feelings. A friend you look up to also gives
you positive feedback. Tonight: Head
home early.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
HHHHH How you say what you
think has much to do with the manner in which the words are received.
You, more than most other signs,
understand the art of diplomacy and
the need to use it in a difficult situation.
Touch base with a dear friend or loved
one. Tonight: To your favorite haunt.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
HHHH You might want to reconsider an option that could encourage
less stress. In order for that to happen,
you’ll need to trust a partner or close
friend. A boss likes what he or she
sees. You likely will see the benefits
soon enough. Tonight: Allow someone
to treat you.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
HHHHH You are nearly unstoppable. A few associates also could have
a similar amount of energy pushing
them forward. Others seem ready to
jump in and make what you need happen. You might be toying with the idea
of taking a mini-vacation soon. Tonight:
Whatever you want.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
HHH Something is going on behind
the scenes. Rather than snoop around,
as others might expect you to do, just
go about your business as usual. You
will reverse the trend and make others
wonder what is going on. A friend or
loved one gives you a gift. Tonight: Not
everyone needs to know what you’re
thinking.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
HHHHH Meetings charge you with
enough energy to complete a project,
but a call from a friend also encourages you to take a bold step. You are the
sign of friendship, and you’re only too
pleased to go along with this person’s
suggestion. Tonight: Where people can
be found.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
HHHH You might want to take that
extra step toward helping a special
person in your life. This person will be
very grateful, even if he or she does
not express the gratitude you might
like. Remember, everyone has a different style. Tonight: You are the lead
actor.
