A Hunger for More
In a world a~ ravaged as is ours
hy the hitter '' inus of hate and
hate's awful offspring. cruelty. \Ve
long for the sweet I) perfumed airs
of good news. Not onl) is the terrain or the world largd) barren of
pt·ace and hope. hut even into our
own homes come the rancid fumes
of fear and the fetid stink of selfl';hness, suffocating us with
clouds ~1f despair. Families struggle and break apart, churches
bicker and split into fragments,
and whole communities polarize
and divide.
With such realities SUITOunding
us and compelling us to either
engage them or succumb to them.
two questions arise. First, where
can one turn for good nev,•s'? It b
\ ery hard to find good news that
offsets the avalanche of had news
cascading into our lives all da)
long, e' cry day. i\luch of it is due,
no doubt, to our compulsive fascination and addiction to hearing and
seeing bad news. Humanity seems
to collective!\ find scandal and
t1·agedy much 'more interesting and
worth) of attention than it doc:-.

o) (pseudo) reality show:-. and
amusement over Hollvwood and
:-.port star~· misfortunes:
But there IS good ne\\ s in the
world. The good news is that God
lo' es you and that He loves } ou so
n1uch that He ~pent His O\\ n Son in
order to draw you out of dc:-.pair and
i1)to a livmg hope that cannot be
overcome .
. The second question follows the
rLrst one and USSIIJnl'S that we haH~
n(lswered it. The question is hov,
can \\C know that the good news of
the Gospel is indeed the very thing
it: claims to be: good news'! I have
known 'ery intelligent people to
look at the Good News of God's
love and laugh, claimin~ that 11 is
o~·erl) simpliStic and ineffective in
i~ a:-.se. sment of the \\ orld's conditiun. Some have said that it is little
n1ore than a crutch for those who
imply can not face life on their
o\\11 and need something a little
more .
But the Good !'le\\S of Jesus

T:here ts no other. nor has there
C\er been a phtlosophy or teaching
tn the "orld. that so thorough I)
recognizes the tragic condition of
t})e world, the corrupted nature of
the human heart, and the awesome
essence of God's own holy and
omnipotent bene\ olence all ct the
same time. Secular science says ,
tor instance, that human beings are
not sptrituul creatures. but are onl)
biOlogical ones; just another link in
a cham of accidental mutations
that ha\ e adapted to ever changing
em ironments . So "e are reduced
to things no more morally
ad' anced than frogo; or tapeworms
in u world \\here all things live
according to the blind rules of natural selection.

I cannot conceive of there ever ·

having been, now being, or of
there ever being a valid excuse
for this . It's not only out of
!me: it's un-American.
All uctive duty milital)' personnel and veterans deserve to
be respected . I contend that
those who volunteer today for
military duty are a breed apart,
few in number but great in spir- ·
it. Unlike so many of their contemporaries. whose concern js
about what their Country can
do for them, those who wear
the umform are more interested
111 what they can do for
America. l think you know it's
our active-duty military that
enables us to enjoy the perks
and prh ileges we do.
Yet, it ts my sincere ho.
Americans don't tire of tl
conflict in the Middle East as
they did of VietNam. and once
again. as happened in the late
'60·s into the '70's, tum their
backs on those in uniform. God
forbid today's servicemen and
- v.omcn should have lo experience that !
I wonder: what matters most
to Americans today'? I'm afraid
for all too many it's what they
perceive to be their rights, never
mind the consequences of their
exercising them . Even if the
Supreme Court should validate
the activity of those who protest
the war in Iraq and/or
Afghamstan in the way the ·
aforementioned group in Texas .

At the other end of the age spectrum, older adults often place too much trust
in their experie'lce and thus they may fall prey to overconfidence in their
