POMEROY - Dozens of Meigs
County's boys and girls returning to
school today will be carrying new backpacks filled with basic school supplies.
thanks to the generosity of others.
About 150 students were given supplies by the Meigs Cooperative Parish
during a distribution at the Mulberry
Community Center Tuesday afternoon.
More than a hundred children had re~is
tered in advance and many others JUSt
came by in hopes of getting things they
needed for the opening day of school. No
one was turned away empty-handed.
There were plenty of school supplies to
go around.
Again this year State Rep. Debbi.e
Phillips paired up with non-profit orgamLations to provide backpacks and was at
the Center Tuesday bringing 50 colorful
backpacks with her and assisting with
the distribution.

Employees with the
Village of Pomeroy's

village council this week
asking for a pay raise, saying they were promised it
this summer but the summer is nearly over.
Employee
Charlie
Fitchpatrick and another
unidentified employee
said Mayor John Musser
promised them a raise
similar to one received by
water department employees in 2008 for $2.67 per
hour. Fitchpatrick said the
promise was made last fall
and promised this summer. Musser said he didn't
recall having that conversation and that didn't
sound like him to make a
promise if he didn't think
he could -keep it.
Fitchpatrick said it had
been four years since
street department workers had a raise and felt
the village could find
money on other projects
but not pay raises.

about the village purchasing the new Pomeroy
Municipal Building. He also took issue with a recent
pay ratse for Village Administrator Paul Helhnan
after he received state certification - a raise which
was part of his employment agreement.
"We just want a raise," Street Superintendent Jack
utter said. "It used to be nobody got a raise unless
ryone
did."
•
Musser said it wasn't that anyone on council felt the
street department workers didn't deserve a raise but
the money wasn't there. Musser also said the water
and sewer departments generate income where the
street department does not and operates solely out of
the general fund.
Councilman Vic Young said council woulq still
work on getting street department employees a five
percent raise in January 2011 and the following year
try to look at another five percent.
Councilwoman Ruth Spaun asked if the one-quarter
of a percent income tax increase proposed on the
November ballot could be used for raises? Musser
said it could and Councilman Pete Barnhart said he
supports the increase because he wants to be able to
give the employees a raise. If the income tax increase
passes, it would mean an estimated, additional
$80,000 into the general fund.
Council is also facing a 32 percent increase in the
village's annual health insurance premium which is
due on Sept. 1 and will cost $144,000, nearly
$25,000 more than it cost last year. Insurance Agent
Donald Vaughan said he was currently trying to collect application forms from all employees to submit
for different quotes from different companies - the
village's current provider is Anthem. Vaughan said it
could take up to two weeks to receive new quotes
An other companies. Until those quotes are
W eived, the village will pay the premium with
Anthem on Sept. 1.
Village workers receive free health insurance
though there is a $3,000 deductible of which the village pays $1,500 into the employee's health insurance
savings account.
In other council news:
After the meeting, Hellman said not all employees
in the water department received a raise in 2008, only
two which were hired in and brought up to the pay
scale of other employees in the department.
The minutes for the Aug. 9 meeting were approved,
including a previously unreported motion which was
made after an executive session which read the village would hire the Jerry Goff Architectural Firm for
a quote on what it will cost to "bring the old Pomeroy
Senior High School up to code."

AMP from Page Al

A major piece in the

HAPPY BIRTIIDAY for Wednesday,
Aug. 25, 2010:
This yeat; you swing back and forth
as you determine your boundaries in
key associations. Sometimes you feel
ac; if you don't give enough. Other
times you feel as if you give too much.
While juggling this back and forth, you
discover greater self-discipline with
finances and other indulgences as well.
If you are single, you meet people with
ease. In fact, you will meet someone
you feel passionately about. If you are
attached, add sparks and fire to your
bond. These feelings come from you
but will be returned. PISCES can be
challenging.

ARIES (March 21-April19)
***Take what a pc1rtner says with
a grain of salt. Others act quickly. They
also could release frustration or anger.
News filters through the workplace.
Give yourself24 hours to process it
and determine the appropric1te
response. Tonight: Getting much-needed space.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
Meetings prove to be substantial and the key to moving forward. Your creativity surges. Share
some great ideas that pop into your
mind. Those you deal with on a daily
bac;is could be out of sorts. Know thal
good intentions surround your associates. Tonight Where ~pie are.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
*** You might be called on to
push a pl'O)ect forward. Your inner dialog is right-<m. However, you note that
your efforts bring odd resullo.;, not
what was expected. Discus.s a better or
more effective path with a trusted
partner. Tonight: lalk.-; over dinner.
CANCER Oune 21-July 22)
**** Keep rearhing out for others at a distance, and slay on top of
communication. A personal situation
could be in the back of your mind.
Handle this issue us soon .ls possible
so that you can flourish ,md function
100 percent. Tonight: DiS<.'I.lsS a problem with a detached .1ttitude.
LEO Ouly 23·Aug. 22>
***** Relate directly to others.
Sun-ess is more likely if you pun;ue
conversations on a one-on·6ne level.
Talk and discuss your feelings directly.
You might waiver between wanting to
take immediate action and being
receptive and thoughtful. Tonight:
Don't forget to s<'hedule .:1 doctor's

appointment. Take up a new pastinle.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
**** Defer tO others and go with
the flow. You could be prone to spending, especially as you seem to work ·
through your feefmgs that way. Know ·
that there are other ways. Avoid taking
any risks when the negative result
could cause a problem. Tonight Defer
to a partner.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-0ct. 22)
FOOJs on the job at hand. You
could be overwhelmed by everything
that lands on your plate. You have the
drive to deal with everything. Your
sense of which approach will work
best is right-<m. Tonight Take some
time to renew your energy.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
**** Your creativity comes forward when dealing with people and
their issues. Once more, be careful
about swallowing your feelings. You
could be trying to handle more than
you can possibly work through.
Tonight: Open up to a trusted friend
and discus.<; your feelings. This person's feedback could be helpful.
SAGJITARIUS (1\:ov. 22-0ec. 21)
*** Demands surround you. A
meeting provides plenty of ideas to
move a project forward. Others also
offer to pitch in. Your ability to regenerate your financial perspective can
make a big difference. You feel pressured by a boss. Tonight: Head home.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
**** Keep a conversation mov·
ing, and refuse to lock on any issue.
You can always go back and revisit
this problem with a new approach or
perspective. Someone you look up to
indeed is changeable. Tonight Join
friends for a rnsual dinner.
AQUARIUS Oan. 20-Feb. 18)
You mean well, but your
aspirations could cost you a pret/y
penny. Discussion.<; bring anot¥r way
of handling money. You don't wanlto
shoulder
the responsibility. Tonight
Hop on the web, surf and relax.
PISCES (Feb. 19-Marcha<J)
*****You c1re all s~es, despite
others' mood. Your goal and perhaps
even your immediate Oide of friends
could be m the procesfof change. A
partner could swing J;etween two
stron& feeling.s, hence the ambivalence.
Tonight: Someone Jets you know that
he or she doesn't ,tgree and why in no
uncertain terms.
