Middleport celebrates Christmas

Blood

planned
during
December
OHIO VALLEY —
Between Thanksgiving
and Christmas, more
than 1 million units of
blood could be transfused
in the United States.
Individuals are urged to
give a lifesaving gift this
holiday season by making an appointment to
donate blood or platelets
and help the American
Red Cross ensure a sufficient supply is available
for patients throughout
the holiday season. Those
with type O blood are
especially needed.
How blood donation
impacts lives
On Sept. 28, 2018,
MaKenzie Schienebeck
experienced a complication during her pregnancy and found herself
losing blood extremely
fast. She was in and out
of consciousness and felt
her life slipping away.
Schienebeck was given
blood transfusions on
the way to the hospital,

Despite rain and cooler temperatures
on Saturday evening, residents
and businesses in the village of
Middleport celebrated the Christmas
season with a parade, carolers, a
tree lighting and visit from Santa
and the Grinch. Among the parade
participants were several local fire
departments, led by the Middleport
Volunteer Fire Department. Before
the parade began, the River City
Players performed several Christmas
Carols for those in attendance.
Following the parade children visited
with Santa and the Grinch at The
Blakeslee Center.

The show is now in its

Painted snow plows on display

Photos by Sarah Hawley | Sentinel

The Meigs County Highway Department and the Meigs County ODOT (Ohio Department of Transportation) garage displayed their locally
painted snow plows during the annual Pomeroy Christmas Parade on Sunday afternoon. The plows will be used this winter to help clear
the roads in snowy conditions. According to ODOT, Paint-the-Plow is a community outreach program in which students are invited to
paint an ODOT snow plow blade with original artwork to represent their individual school. In addition to being visible when in full service
during the winter-weather months, the blades will be used at events within the school’s community to enhance public awareness,
promote safety and foster greater appreciation of both ODOT and the school’s art program.

WILLOW WOOD, Ohio — A road trip gets
tough when you run out of gas.
The River Valley boys basketball team led
through three quarters of play, but host Symmes
Valley made a 19-6 surge over the final eight minutes en route to a 56-44 non-conference decision
Tuesday night in Lawrence County.
The Raiders (1-1) put together a back-and-forth
battle with the Vikings (1-0) over the course of the
first half, with SVHS taking a slim 14-13 first quarter edge before making a 13-11 run for a 27-24
halftime edge.
The Silver and Black, however, got seven points
from Jordan Lambert as part of a 14-10 third quarter push that gave RVHS a 38-37 lead entering the
finale.
Symmes Valley countered with eight points
from Luke Leith down the stretch and the Raiders
mustered only three field goals in the fourth before
ultimately falling by a dozen points.
The Vikings claimed a 30-21 advantage on the
boards, including a 12-10 edge on the offensive
glass. RVHS committed 15 turnovers in the setback, while the hosts gave the ball away 17 times.
The Raiders netted 18 total field goals —
including a pair of 3-pointers — and also went
6-of-8 at the free throw line for 75 percent.
Lambert led the guests with 18 points and Brandon Call followed with 14 points. Mason Rhodes
was next with seven points, while Dylan Fulks and
Chase Caldwell contributed two markers apiece.
Cole Young completed the scoring with a single
point.
The Vikings made 25 total field goals — including four trifectas — and were also 2-of-4 at the
charity stripe for 50 percent.
Luke Leith led Symmes Valley with a game-high
19 points, followed by Jack Leith with 18 points.
Logan Walsh and Drew Scherer were next with
seven markers each, while Caden Brammer and
Josh Ferguson completed the scoring with respective efforts of three and two points.
River Valley returns to action Saturday when it
hosts Southern in a non-conference matchup at 7

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin needed a
break.
After starting the season 6-0, posting four shutouts and outscoring their opponents by a combined
255-29, the Badgers suffered a stunning 24-23 defeat
at Illinois and a lopsided 38-7 loss at then-No. 3 Ohio
State.
It was time to regroup.
“After that game, that was back-to-back losses, followed by a bye,” coach Paul Chryst said. “So I think
there was also that time to catch your breath for us
as coaches — and even as players — to take a look
at ‘OK, what have you been? Who have you been? …
What are the things we’re doing well?’”
Wisconsin (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten, No. 12 College Football Playoff) rallied for four straight victories after
the bye to accomplish its goal of winning the Big
Ten West Division.
“We took that bye week where it was a big mental break,” AP midseason All-America center Tyler
Biadasz said. “It’s just that break where you can really sit down and really focus on what you did those
first six games and what do you need to get better
at and what’s going to be your main focus going
through … to give this team a better advantage. I
think we all stepped up in a big way and I think all
11 guys, offensively specifically, and all three phases,
we’ve done a better job of eliminating penalties,
eliminating false starts compared to the first six
games.”
In the process, the 10th-ranked Badgers also
reclaimed Paul Bunyan’s Axe from Minnesota. Last
season’s 37-15 loss snapped Wisconsin’s 14-game
winning streak against its rival.
“I think what I’m most proud of was the response
to all, kind of that self-analysis,” Chryst said. “And
then I appreciate the way they, you know, to get to
where you want to finish this season and maximize
this season, it was going to be not even just one
game at a time but one day at a time, and I thought
they did a good job of doing that.”
The Badgers now await a rematch with the secondranked Buckeyes (12-0, 9-0, No. 1 in CFP) in the Big
Ten championship game in Indianapolis on Saturday.
J.K. Dobbins rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns against Wisconsin earlier this season, and
Chase Young was nearly impossible to block with
four sacks. Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor had only 52
yards rushing against the Buckeyes after averaging
almost 137 per game coming in.
“They definitely haven’t gotten worse. That’s for
sure,” outside linebacker Zack Baun said of Ohio
State. “I think we’ve continued to grow as well. But
playing a team two times in one season is such a special opportunity. You get to go back and watch what
you did personally. It’s different than watching film
from other teams. And then you get to reevaluate
what they’ve done since we’ve played them.”
