Research debunks claim
Dear Editor:

Last week I re~e tved political literature conccmmg Jill
Thompson and sick leave. I called the contm:t, Gloria
Fauss, to mquire as to what year the 25 days of stck leave
:had taken place and also if Jill Thompson was indeed the
-auditor at the iime of the sic k leave.
: Glona stated that she didn 't know what year but !hat she
:was definttely· the county audttor at the time she took il I
·asked Gloria v,hat Debbie Phillips' record of stck days was
imd she stated that Debbtc 's record wasn't necessary to
research because her record wasn 't what was bemg ques.tioned.
: I finally contacted the so urce th at Gloria li sted m her literature , the Athens County Auditor's Office personnel ftles
and~earned the truth Jill Thompson was a county en\ployee, not Athens County audttor, when she went on materni ty leave I 3 years ago.
Debbie Phtlltps tal ks about her grassroots campaign I
·say she ts now runntng a trashroots campaign. Shame on
'you , Debbie. Apparently, we the votets cannot ask about
her record and how many days she has taken of sick leave .
Apparently, the Democrat Party cannot find anythtng else
to slam Jill Thompson for except taking maternity leave 13
years ago.

is natural with 0-8 points. If he iu.mps to ·
two spades, It shows 9-11 poi nts. But
what about leaps to three spades and
lour spades?
They eta not describe stronger and
stronger 1hands. beca use with 12-p lus
points South wou ld cue-bid two diamonds_ Instead, they show relat ively
weak hands In high-card terms, but ones
~ith a lloonngg sui!. Three spades wOuld
promise a seven-card suit (or ver; good
six-carde r), and four spades an eightbagger (or very good seven-carder) . So
Jn.this deal South lumps tci three spades.
West , knowing his pa rtner must be
weak, passes, and North raises to
game.
WeS1 cashes two diamond tricks, 'then
shifts to the heart .king. How should
South cont inue?
Declarer has tour losers: one spade. one
heart and two diamonds. He has only
nine winners: sill: spades, one heart and
two clubs. To get a 10th trick. and simul·
ta neously to discard his heart loser,
, South must tak~ thrSe clubs. And he
must get them immediately. II he plays a
trump at trick lour. he will go down.
After winning trick three with dummy's
hea rt ace, declarer plays a club to his
king, followed by a club to dummy's jack .
When th e finesse works, declarer's
heart loser disappears on the club ace
and th e contr'act come s home.
