;Dunn·hits slam, homers twice in ·Reds' 7-2 win
. BY JoE KAY

CINCINNATI - Adam
Dunn hit a grand slam and a
solo homer off Mark Mulder,
and the Cincinnati Reds
extended the St. Louis
Cardinals' losing streak with
Jl 7-2 victory Thesday night.
The defending World
Series champions have
dropped five in a row, matching !heir season high. After
regrouping for an impressive
comeback, the Cardinals have
!>larted unraveling down the
stretch.
They were 10 112 games
out at the end of June, but had
rallied to within a game of
first place in the NL Central
before they hit their current
slump. The loss left them four
games out, their biggest
deficit since Aug. 24.
One of the stars of their
summer charge was a big reason this one slipped away.
Right fielder Rick Ankiel
let a fly ball drop for a double,
then let another de!lect off the
Jteel of his glove for a tworun error during Cincinnati's
six-fUJI third inning: Dunn,
who hit a solo homer in his
fu:st at-bat, hit his seventh
career slam off Mulder (0-2)
during the 10-batter inning.

·Enough about this Jake
Lockllr fellow.
· While .
Locker,
Washington's ·
heralded
young quarterback, has
played well in his first two
college games, a big key
behind Washington's 2-0
start is the play of the
Huskies defense.
On
Saturday,
Washington's defense held
Boise State to to points and
none in the second half of the
Huskies 24-10 win. It was
the Broncos' second-lowest
point total in the last eight
years, and came after
Washington (2;0) limited
haples~ Syracuse to just 12
pomts m the season opener.
Now comes a new challenge this Saturday: The
punishing, bullying, hit-youm-the-face style of No. 10
Ohio State.
.
· There won't be any wacky
fonnations or players shifting all over the field right
before the snap, as the
Huskies faced in their first
two games. The Buckeyes
(2-0) will simply bull

straight ahead.
• "I love that. As a line·backer, that's a challenge to
you as to how physical you
are," said Washington hoebacker E.J. Savannah, who
had 13 tackles against Boise
State. "We're going to get
tested this week a lot. It's
going to be fun to see how
we respond to it, because I
think we're goipg to respond
well."
·
The Huskies s'till were reiishing Monday in their 24-10
win over then-No. 22 Boise
State. It was Washington's
first·win over a ranked opponent since . the 2003 Apple
Cup .. victory
against
Washington State and
snapped t)le Broncos' 14f;ame win streak, the longest
m the nation.
Washington's
offense
scored all 24 points in the
first 24 minutes of the game.
It was the H11skies .defense
that took the spotlight in the
second half, bending a number of times, but coming up
with tl)e needed big plays to
keep Boise State off the
scoreboard.

Late in · the third quarter,
Boise State drove instde the
Washington 30. On first
down, Roy . Lewis tackled
Broncos' star running back
Ian Johnson for a 2-yard
loss. After a two incompletions and a penalty on Boise
State, · defensive tackle
Jordan Reffett blocked a 51yard field goal attempt.
Lewis, named Pac-10
defensive player'ofthe week,
came up big again early in
the fourth quarter, intercepting Taylor Tharp's deep
throw at the Washington 14.
He later broke up, Tharp's
pass in the end zone on
fourth down, and freshman
cornerback
VonzeU
McDowell sealed the viCtory
with an interception at the
Washingt<.m 2 with less than
3 minutes remaining.
Lewis is the only senior
starte~ in the secondary, and,
along with junior safety
Jason Wells, has taken the
role of leading youngsters
including McDowell and
freshman
safety
Nate
Williams.
"We've got a lot of young

guys getting vital reps early,"
Lewis said. "It's our role, we
have to accept it,' that's the
way it is, to lead those guys
and get those guys prepared

RACINE - Twice a year during its
annual yard sales the Racin( Area

turns one man's junk/treasure. into

Southern High School, and this year is
no exception.
RACO yard sales happen in May

The sales began tn 1992 and iij' 15
years the group has raised $57,200 in
scholarship funds completely deriv.ed
from donations of items and money to
its yard sales.
"People in the Racine area are the
most generous people," Kathryn Hart,
president of RACO said. "They donate
1tems and when they purchase items
they tell us .to 'keep the change."'
Hart said the yard sales are orf;anized by volunteer labor includ1Qg
RACO members and students from
Southern High School which helped
unload five trailer loads of "treasures" on Monday for the largest sale
yet. Nearly 34 volunteers have
worked at the yard sale this week,
many being fed by RACO member
Mary Ball.
Despite the rain on Monday, RACO
member Ann Zirkle said the organization raised $2,058 for scholarship
funds in one day with people going
through the goodies in raincoats and
under umbrellas.
After 15 years of yard sales the
RACO volunteers have seen it all
when it comes to donations, including
but not limited to the kitchen sink.
Some more memorable donations
include a 50-pound bag of oats and a
bottle of Viagra which appears to have
accidentally been· donated among a
group of other items. Although the

Drinking problem
disrupts family ties
BY KATHY MITCHELL
AND MARCY SUGAR

Dear Aimie: My husband
and I have been together
almost four years and have
a very strong bond with my
side of the family. But my
husband drinks quite frequently. and when he does,
he becomes loud and
obnoxious and could care
less about the world around
him.
This past weekend. we
were at a family picnic and
my husband was drinking .
He also was driving a fourwheeled ATY on my family's land, back and forth .
Once, he rode off and didn' t
return . 01 course, I was
scared. As my father and I
went looking for him, my
husband popped up over the
hill like nothing had happened. He said he wasn' t
able to get the ATV into
reverse and that's what took
him so long. We asked him
to. get off the ATV before
someone got hurt. My dad
was furious, and my husband insisted on leaving
because he "refuses to be
spoken to like that."
While I was getting our
children ready to leave, my
father and husband were
talking to each other, bul
Dad became a little aggressive and told my husband
that he needs to slow down
his drinkin~ because he has
responsibilities. Later, when
they both came to their
senses, IllY father apologized for his temper and
told my husband he loved
him. They then shook hands
and hugged.
Well, when we got home,
my husband said Dad insinuated he was worthless and
that bad doesn't care about
him, which is not true. Now
my husband refuses to
SJ?Cak to my dad or return
h1s calls. How can I nfend
family
' ties?
Heartbroken in Louisiana
. Dear Louisiana: Your
husband hl\s a drinking
problem, and the real rea·
son he is avoiding your
father is becau se Dad
called him on it. He prefers
denial. Before your husband kills himself or someone else while riding
drunk, please contact AtAnon (al-anon.alateen.org)
at l-888-4AL-ANON (1888-425-2666).
Dear Annie: My husband
and I have been married for
23 years and have four children. He is a good husband
and father in every way
except one. When we are
with company, he will say
· hurtful things at my
expense, under the guise of
bemg a joke. For instance,
when we were first married,

l made dinner fo r hi s family.
His sister commented on a
small picture of me. My
husband piped up with,
"Oh, that was taken when
she was still young and
good-looking."
Yesterday wa s his birth day. When he walked into
lhe room , our children and
friends
sang "Happy
Birthday.'' l told him to
"make a wi sh," and when .
he blew out the candles,
he looked at me and said,
" It didn't work. You're
still here ."
When I call him out on
these comments. he always
says he is just joking. He
never did this before we
were married. Why ·does he
do it?- Joanna
Dear Joanna : Either this
is how your husband
ex presse s hostility, or he
truly thinks he has to entertain an audience and you are
hi s easiest target. If there is
other evidence of hostility,
you need to work on ihat,
possibly with professional
help. If he 's just making
jokes at your expense, let
him know it is hurtful and
embarrassing and he needs
to knock it off. Beyond that,
all you can do is ignore him.
Dear Annie: Sing a chorus of hearts and flowers
for "Bill in Memphis." In
13 years, he enjoyed
"Joyce's" company without
making a commitment, so
she was free to run off with
another guy.
I believe Bill thought he
had it made and found out
he wasn ' t in control · after
all. I'm an 85·year-old
male who believes you
need to put your money
(or, in this case. a ring)
where your mouth is. Jack in Louisville
Dear Jack: A lot of readers t)lought Joyce left
because Bill. hadn't proposed in the 13 years they 'd ·
been together, but it' ~ also
possible he proposed many
times and Joyce turned him
down becau se she was looking for something better.
You are right, however, that
no man should assume his
girlfriend is going to stick
around indefinitely without
a firm commitment.

RACINE - For two teams
tryin~ to turn around a disappointmg start to the 2007 season, Fnday night will be the
turning pomt for one of those
squads.
Southern (0-3) and Hannan
(0-2) come into Friday
night's contest looking for
their fi rst wins of the season
and both have had a rough
time to start the year.
Southern has been outscored
I 13-28 in its three losses and
Hannan has drop~d two
games by a coriJbmed' score
of86-6.
Now both will h)' to at least
tum a corner with tts first win
in 2007 .
The Tornadoes have had
the most success in the early
portion of the year with close
contests against South Gallia
and Symmes Valley - at
least through one half of play:
Southern kept each of those
contests close through one
half but let each get away
from them with turnovers and
a struggling offense resulting
in two lopsided second half
perfonnances.
In between · those two
games the Tornadoes suffered
a much different first half,
fmding itself down 42-0 at
the break before falling 49-8
to visiting Pocahontas
County.
Southern has been led so
far this season by Greg
Jenkins who has collected
185 yards on 52 canies on an
offense that hasn't seen much
success movinjl the ball .
Other than Jenkms, a collection of players including
Justin Kimes, Wes Riffle,
Eric Buzzard and Anthony
Shamblin have been used in
toting the ball.
In the air, Ryan Chapman
has been consistent in the few
passes the team has made,

overall losing record.
VHS lost 21-14 in its
heat-shortened opener at
East Hardy. then lost a 3020 shootout with Fayette
Valley last week. The
Bulldogs have yet to score
less than two touchdowns in
any contest this fall .
Not so much the case for
Eastern, which has a grand
total of 13 poinls this year.
The Green and White, after·
a 17- 13 loss to Alexander in
the season opener, have not
scored a point in the last
nine quarters combined including
back-to-bac k
shutout losses to Wahama
and Sou1h Gall ia (7 -0).
Eastern 's competition is
also a collective 8-1 this
season.
With the exception of last
•

Hannan has had its two
losses by scores of 40-6 to
South Gallia and 46-0 to Van
before taking last week off.
The Wildcats now hope that a
week's rest will help heal
several injuries suffered during the Van game and hopefully will make the team
much more competitive
when it visits Racine.
The Wildcats lost both
Shawn Kauffer and Jared
Taylor to concussions during
week two's contest. Kauffer
will be back for the contest,
but Thy lor will be out another
week with lingering effects
from the injury.
Despite the
mJuries,
Hannan saw strong play from
Zach Sturgeon, Kevin Blak.e
and Ivon Wasilijew arlil it
hopes tllat Friday will be a
much different te.am looking
to tum the corner against a
team that has seen similar
struggles to star the year.
Nathan Payne has also played
well in his two starts at quarterback.
·
While the two teams usually see different ·competition,
they have both seen one similar foe this year in South
Gallia. The two· scores were
very· similar, with the Rebels
scoring 40 points against
Hannan and 33 . against
Southern with both scoring
six points each.
The two teams also saw
very similar results in
yardage with Hannan gaining
120 yards and Southern gaining 184 with South Gallia
putting up 280 and 278
resjJectively in each contest.
If those numbers act as a
gauge for Friday night's
game, the two teams look to
be l?retty even! y matched
desptte the Tornadoes posting
a 40-0 v1ctory over Hannan
last season.
The two teams will get a
chance to show what it can do
Friday with kick-off slated to
be at 7:30p.m.
week against a powerful
White Falcon gang, EHS
has been in some very tightly-contested ball games that
just haven't gone their way.
A major reason for that
improvement has been a
defense that had allowed
just 24 points in the fll'st
two games.
But as good as the
defense has been, for the
most part; the offense has
yet to hit full stride in any
contest. The Eagles mustered just 61 yards of total
offense last week in that
loss to Wahama, including
negative six yards rushing
on 30 canies.
If Eastern hopes to get out
of its early rut, it wiH be up
to the offense this weekend
to make things hapj>en. And
with a nearl y 3-to-1 edge on
the roster, look for the
Eagles to try and wear down
their.opponent.
Kick-off is scheduled for
7:30<p.m.

"Cornelius is a very good

thing about him is that he is
an even better person. He is a
good kid, he has a good head
on his shoulders, he is a great
leader for us and he is a kid
that makes it fun to coach,"
Chancey sciid. "We are fortunate to have some talented

He is joined in the backfield by Brandon Fisher who

attack with the steady play of
Story at quarterback and the
Meigs -offense has piled up
1,255 yards of total offense
- nearly four times more
yardage than the Big Blacks
have gained in their .two
games.
But the 338 yards of total
offense Point has ~ained this
year may be dece1ving. The
Big Blacks faced an undefeated Sissonville 40-7 in
week two after an off week
to start the year and lost to
always tough cross-river
rival Gallia Academy 28-0
last week.
"We played two good football teams, not too many
people open up with two
undefeated teams and a
Gallipolis team that just lost
to a Sheridan team. We don't
have the luxury of opening
up with other types of
teams," Darst said.
Still, despite the low offensive output, Darst feels that
his fonnula is a proven one
and will work once all the
pieces fall into place.
·
"We have worked on a few

Both clubs spiked the baH

Amy Noe played her best

Courtney Shriver killed five

There were · three Lady

went for four.
Defensively Geiger had

there are adjustments that
need to be made. We have t'o
he able to stay on our assignments, not have ~ituations
where we have kids blocking
wrong people," Darst said.
"We are going to work on
those things, we are a young
offense and we are gomg to
keep doing what we are
doin~ ."

Potnt has seen several
players contribute to its balanced backfield attack with
Derek Mitchell leading all
rushers with I00 yards on 17
carries. Caleb Wasonga,
Tyler Grant, David Wallace
and Anthony Jeffers have
also seen considerable carries in the first two contests.
But while the rushing attack
is set, the team is still struggling to move the ball
through the air.
Still, Chancey says that the
Point pass attack is stiii
strong e~ou gh to ~eep his
team on 1ts toes as tt tnes to
stop some very strong runners and one very tough lineman.
"John Hi pes is probably

Amy Barr had five

Howard added two.
Barr handed out 37 assists

Gallia Academy's junior
varsity remained unbeaten
at 7-0 with a 25-23, 25-11

one of the best lineman we
play against. We are just
going to run our defense and
try to stop what they do
best," Chancey said. "It is
really no different than any
other week, we are going to
do what we do best and like
we do every week, try to take
away whal they do best."
But the biggest challenge
for the Big Blacks this week
won 'I be on offense, it will
be stopping the Meigs rushing attack. Still, despite
Meigs' 346 rushing yards per
game, Point Pleasant hasn't
allowed more than . 200
ground yards in a game yet
this season.
"Hopefully we will see
improvement. We have a few
injuries and we hope to figure that out, but the kids are
excited and hopefully we
will go out and play a good
solid game and I think we
will," Darst said.
Now all that is left is for
the tough Point defense to
face one of the most dangerous rushing attacks around
when the two teams clash
7:30p.m. Friday in Pomeroy.
