A warm coat for cold weather

State Rep. Jay Edwards helps a child at Munchkin City try
on his new coat.

MIDDLEPORT — Children at
Munchkin City received warm coats
on Monday afternoon during a visit
from the Children’s Hunger Alliance
(CHA) and State Representative Jay
Edwards (R-Nelsonville).
CHA and Rep. Edwards took part
in the visit not only to hand out the
coats, but to focus attention on how
CHA-sponsored childcare centers
are helping provide healthy meals
to children in high-need neighborhoods. According to the CHA, over
75 percent of the enrolled children
qualify for free or reduced-price
meals putting them at greater risk

for food insecurity.
The coats were provided by the
Governor’s Office of Faith-Based
and Community Initiatives through
Operation Warm. Fado Pub and
Kitchen in Dubin also provided
additional winter coats and accessories donated by their customers.
Edwards handed out the coats to
each of the children, helping them
to try on their new coats.
CHA is one of the largest statewide sponsors of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Child and
Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)
which provides reimbursements to
daycare centers assisting them in
providing healthy meals to the children they care for.

Munchkin City Daycare in
Middleport, which is operated by
Serena Larsen, currently serves
54 children. The day care provides
services to children from birth up,
including school age children who
are at Munchkin City after school.
CHA Director of Government
Affairs Scott Neely and CACFP specialist Mary Lantz were on hand on
behalf of CHA.
Neely explained that the CHA
works with more than 1,000 facilities with USDA programing to provide meals for children. Munchkin

Council
hears from
Buckeye Hills
By Lorna Hart
Special to the Sentinel

MIDDLEPORT — A presentation by members
of Buckeye Hills Regional Council was the focus of
Middleport Village Council’s regularly scheduled
Monday evening.
Buckeye Hills Regional Council was established
in 1968 with a mission to “improve the lives of residents in southeast Ohio”, and serves as a forum
through which local communities work cooperatively towards that goal.
According to their website, they are the local
contact for many state and federal programs, write
comprehensive development plans, identify trends
in the region, and look for opportunities to promote the general health and welfare of the areas
residents.
The Council collaborates with elected officials
from Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan,
Noble, Perry, and Washington counties in their
efforts to “grow strong communities”, and is made
up of five divisions: Aging and Disability, Community Development, Mapping and Data, Population
Health, and Transportation Planning.
Mayor Fred Hoffman had reached out to the
organization for assistance in envisioning the revitalization of the downtown area.
Buckeye Hills Executive Director Misty Crosby
and her team explained what the group could
bring to Middleport’s planning efforts, beginning
with a needs assessment and identification of
priorities from Council. Later, that effort would
include Village residents, and business owners.
“Buckeye Hills represents all local governments
in the area,” Crosby said. “We understand your
struggles, and can help bring resources to the
community in a number of ways, including linking
residents with services and a loan fund for small
businesses.”
She stressed the importance of identifying the
Village needs and priorities before deciding on any
major undertakings, as did Development Director

leagues since summer
of last year,” said Nurse

know that this is a free
service for anyone that’s
been a nurse and dedicated their life (to serving others).”

Holcomb said that
groups such as the Ohio

Neely spoke of the
work of Representative
Edwards in helping to get
funding for programs into
the state budget, helping
the children of his district

Edwards commented
that it is important to see

After handing out the

By providing the coats,
the hope is that it will

“While new coats will

GOD’S KIDS KORNER

A talk on
temptation
This is the first week of Lent. Lent is the weeks
that precede Easter. It is a time where we pray and
get ready for Easter after Jesus was crucified and
rose again early that Sunday morning.
Do you know what the word temptation means? Temptation is wanting
to do something which we know we
should not do. We all face temptations every day, and it is hard to
resist sometimes. It isn’t a sin to be
Ann
tempted unless we do what we know
Moody
is wrong. Even Jesus was tempted in
Contributing our Bible verses for this week.
columnist
Matthew 4, verses 1-11 tells us
about the temptation of Jesus. After
Jesus was baptized, He went out into
the desert to pray. He stayed there fasting (going
without food) for 40 days because He was trying
to learn from His Father, God, what He was to
do. You can imagine how hungry Jesus must have
been! Suddenly, Satan came and said to Jesus,
“You don’t have to be hungry. If You really are
the Son of God, turn these stones into bread and
eat.” Jesus did not listen to the devil, but told him,
“Man does not live on bread alone, but by every
word that comes from the mouth of God.” So
Satan tried something else.
Next, Satan took Jesus to the holy city up on
the highest part of the temple. “If You are the Son
of God, jump off, and God will send His angels to
catch You.” Jesus knew it was wrong to test God,
so He said, “Do not put the Lord your God to the
test.” Finally Satan tried for a third time. Satan
took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed
Jesus the entire world below. He told Jesus, “All
of this can be Yours. I will give it to You if You will
bow down and worship me.” Jesus answered, “Go
away from me Satan! It is written to worship the
Lord your God and serve only Him.”
Even though the devil tried to get Jesus to give
into temptation and sin, He did not. Jesus remembered what the scriptures said, and it helped Him
to do what was right and not give into temptation.
We too have times when we are tempted to do
something we know we shouldn’t. The temptations for different people may be different as well.
I might be tempted to spread gossip where you
might be tempted to disobey your parents, for
example. It helps to remember what the Bible
tells us to do and wants us to be like and also how
Jesus won over His temptations by remembering
those exact same things. God gave us the Bible
and its stories to help us to know how He wants
us to live. That is why it’s important to know what
is in the Bible, so we can be like Jesus.
Let’s say a prayer together. Father God, thank
You for giving us the Bible: its scriptures and stories that show us how to live for You. Thank You
for sending Jesus as our example.
Help us to study Your Holy Word and learn what
it teaches us, so we will be able to resist temptations when they come. In Your name we pray.
Amen.
Ann Moody is pastor of Wilkesville First Presbyterian Church and the
Middleport First Presbyterian Church.

Welcome number nine!
I was in a restaurant
one afternoon last week
when I received the following text message from
Jeshua, “We are at the
hospital. The baby is on
the way.”
It was expected news,
and it was exciting news.
By the time Terry and I
arrived at Sentera Hospital in Williamsburg,
Virginia, the next day,
Elias B. Branch had been
born. Brother Micaiah
even accompanied us on
the trip. Mother Megan
and child had done very
well, for which we thank
the Lord.
After three girls, Jeshua
finally got a son. For
Terry and me, it makes
nine grandbabies. There
are now five granddaughters, and four grandsons
for us. I am very happy
to have them all. The
girls—-“my girls”—-have
me wrapped around their
little finger. The boys
make me very proud.
I have a three point
prayer for them while I
still live. First, my prayer
for each of them is that
the Lord will raise them
up to be mighty giants
for Him. I pray for their
early salvation. At least
four them have already
received Jesus Christ as

Third, my prayer for

will allow God to fulfill
His will and purposes in
their lives. What this has
in mind has to do with
personal spiritual growth.
It has to do with having personal experience
with God, which leads
to getting to know God.
It has to do with getting
to the point of absolutely
trusting God. Life is particularly rigorous if you
are not exercised by the
will and purposes of God
in your life. My prayer is
that the lives of my grandbabies will be blessed and
enhanced by the will and
purposes of God.
I will tell you this—-I
told Elias before I left
him, “Now, son, Paw says

high school football, and
maybe have one hundred

Okay?”
Well, just hush my

CROSS WORDS

Sovereign in the silence, II
Here’s how Esther
begins: “Now in the
days of Ahasuerus, the
Ahasuerus who reigned
from India to Ethiopia
over 127 provinces, in
those days when King
Ahasuerus sat on his
royal throne in Susa, the
citadel” (v. 1-2 ESV).
This king reigns over
the vast Persian Empire
where numerous Jews
live as exiles. King Ahasuerus soon throws a
massive party. The Bible
says, “… in the third year
of his reign he gave a
feast for all his officials
and servants. The army
of Persia and Media and
the nobles and governors of the provinces
were before him, while
he showed the riches of
his royal glory and the
splendor and pomp of his
greatness for many days,
180 days” (v. 3-4 ESV).
It’s common for a biblical book to begin by
describing the glory of
a king. The difference
between Esther and most
other books, however,
is that Esther opens by
describing a glorious
king who isn’t God.
King Ahasuerus is so
full of himself that he has
a banquet to display his
own wealth and glory for
half a year. Think about
that. Here’s a king who
launches an extravagant
party for himself. And as
if the first banquet isn’t
enough, King Ahasuerus
throws an after-party.
“And when these days
were completed, the king
gave for all the people
present in Susa the citadel, both great and small,

and forfeits his soul? Or
what shall a man give
in return for his soul?’”
(Matt. 16:26 ESV).
We may not throw
extravagant parties in our
royal palaces with golden
couches. But how often
do we struggle to realize
that our worth is not in
what we own? How often
do we become so consumed and enamored by
our own accomplishments
and possessions that we
fail to worship God as He
rightly deserves?
The late Puritan John
Owen describes it as
having “living affections
to dying things.” It’s like
the rich young ruler who
walks away from Christ
because possessions
consume the affections of
his heart (see Luke 18:1830). Only in Christ do
we find a treasure worth
living and dying for. And
this is something King
Ahasuerus neglects to
recognize while throwing
a party for his own splendor and glory. But how
often do our lives tell a
similar story?
So, yeah. That’s how
Esther begins. It seems
like King Ahasuerus is
running his own show.
Displaying his own glory.
But God is working
behind the scenes. And
the queen mentioned in
verse 9 is about to rise
to the surface, revealing
even more of God’s hand.
After all, He is sovereign
in the silence.

Rio Grande
dismisses men’s
basketball coach

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — University of Rio
Grande athletic director Jeff Lanham has
announced that Ken French has been relieved of
his duties as the RedStorm’s men’s basketball head
coach.
French, who spent 20 seasons at the school,
including the past 14 as head coach, was informed
of the decision on Monday morning in a meeting
with Lanham and school president Ryan Smith.
“Coach French is a good man and a friend and
we wish him and his family nothing but the best
during this transition,” Lanham said. “I’d like to
thank him for his dedication and commitment
while working with all of the young men that he
has over these many years.”
Lanham said that Corey Harris, an assistant
coach for each of the past two seasons, will serve
as interim head coach and will handle day-to-day
operations of the program.
French, a native of Huntington, W.Va., came to
Rio Grande in 1999 after spending three seasons
as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn. As an assistant
coach at Rio, he helped the men’s program to
a pair of appearances in the NAIA Division II
National Tournament, including a Final Four berth
in 2001.
French compiled a record of 173-254 during his
stint as head coach, including a 12-18 mark overall
and a 5-11 showing in River States Conference
play this season.
“Coach French has always had a true passion for
his teams and the game of basketball,” said Lanham. “We are so proud to have had him as part of
the Rio family for so many years.”
Lanham added that a national search for a new
head coach would begin immediately.

40-point victory on Feb. 18 in Point Pleasant,

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. —
Momentum keeps building as
the postseason gets closer.
The Point Pleasant boys
basketball team won its season
finale by a 71-60 tally over Van
on Wednesday at ‘The Dungeon’, giving the Big Blacks a
five-game winning streak headed into the postseason.
PPHS (11-11) — which also
topped the Bulldogs (4-18) by a
71-51 tally on Feb. 20 in Boone
County — was ahead 15-12
after one quarter on Wednesday, connecting on a trio of
three-pointers in the opening
stanza.
The Big Blacks made seven

more three-pointers in the
second quarter, including four
straight from senior Braxton
Yates. Point Pleasant outscored
VHS 25-23 in the second period
and led 40-35 at halftime.
Van closed the gap with a
15-to-11 third quarter, and went
into the finale down 51-50.
The Red and Black finished
the game with a 20-to-10 run,
hitting 7-of-9 fourth quarter
free throws to cap off the 71-60
victory.
For the game, PPHS made
8-of-15 (53.3 percent) foul
shots, while hitting 13 trifectas and a dozen two-pointers.

Sonny Gray pain
free in second
season with Reds
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Sonny Gray had an
All-Star season despite soreness in his throwing
elbow. Surgery has left him pain-free heading into
his second season with the Cincinnati Reds.
The right-hander pitched with bone chips all
season but managed to make 31 starts. He had the
bone chips removed after the season.
“It was hard to think that he wasn’t completely
healthy last year, based on the kind of year he
had,” manager David Bell said. “He’s definitely
confident coming off of last season. It’s just a
mindset knowing that he’s healthy and you had
something taken out of his elbow. It has freed him
up even more not only with mechanics but his
mentality.”
Cincinnati aquired him from the New York
Yankees and Gray agreed to a contract that added
$30.5 million from 2020-22 and includes a 2023
club option.
He went 11-8 with a 2.87 ERA, making the NL
All-Star team along with teammate Luis Castillo.
Gray (205) and Castillo (226) became the first
Reds with at least 200 strikeouts in the same season.
Gray and Houston’s Justin Verlander were the
only pitchers in the majors to make at least 30
starts and allow no more than four runs in any of
them.
Despite the elbow problem, Gray went 2-1 with
a 2.87 ERA in five July starts and 4-0 with a 0.74
ERA in six August outings. He didn’t allow a run

WELLSTON, Ohio
— Overmatched in the
middle rounds.
Third seeded Trimble
used a pivotal 27-12
surge in the middle
quarters and shot 51
percent from the field
on Wednesday night en
route to a 61-42 victory
over the Eastern boys
basketball team in a Division IV sectional final
held at Wellston High
School.
The 14th seeded
Eagles (11-13) took their
only lead of the night 15
seconds into regulation,
but the host Tomcats
(20-3) trailed only 36
seconds before ultimately
securing a permanent
lead on a Tyler Weber
trifecta with 5:54 remaining in the opening frame.
The Green and White
managed to pull back to
within a point following a Colton Reynolds
bucket 21 seconds later,
but THS countered with
an 11-2 run over the
next three minutes while
securing its first double
digit lead of 16-6 with
2:24 left.
EHS, however,
answered with five
straight points to close
out the first frame and
trailed 16-11 through
eight minutes of work.
A Ryan Dill trifecta at
the 6:55 mark allowed
the guests to close to
within 18-14 with 6:55

left in the half, but the
Eagles were ultimately
never closer the rest of
the way.
The Tomcats limited
EHS to just a single basket the rest of the half
while making a 10-2
charge that provided a
comfortable 28-16 cushion at the break.
Garrett Barringer
capped a small 4-2 spurt
with a basket at the 6:44
mark, allowing Eastern
to again close to within
10 points at 30-20.

The guests, however,
were never closer from
there as the Tomcats
reeled off a dozen
straight points over the
next 5:32 while securing
their largest lead of the
night at 43-20 with 1:11
remaining in the third.
Barringer ended Eastern’s nearly six-minute
scoreless drought with a
trifecta with 48 seconds
left, whittling the deficit
down to 43-23 entering
the finale.
EHS managed to cut

the deficit down to 16
points on three different occasions down the
stretch, the last of which
came on at 54-38 following a pair of Mason
Dishong free throws with
2:58 left in regulation.
The Tomcats closed
the final 2:22 with a
small 7-4 run that eventually completed the
19-point outcome.
Trimble, with the
sectional championship
victory, advances to the
district tournament at
the Ohio University Convocation Center and will
face 11th seeded South
Webster at 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
Eastern downfall in the
middle quarters simply
came down to a coldshooting performance,
as the guests went just
2-of-10 from the field in
each of the two frames.
The Red and Gray, on
the other hand, netted
11-of-21 shot attempts
during that same 16-minute span.
The Tomcats also
owned the boards from
start to finish, starting
with a 9-0 advantage in
the first period alone.
THS also held a 17-5 lead
on the glass at halftime,
including a 6-3 edge on
the offensive end.
THS outrebounded the
Eagles by a sizable 38-16
overall margin by night’s
end, including an 11-6
edge on the offensive

Joel Embiid sprains shoulder, Sixers lose to Cavs 108-94
CLEVELAND (AP) —
The Philadelphia 76ers
suddenly have a lot more
to worry about than their
poor road record or playoff seeding.
Their star players are
getting hurt.
Joel Embiid left
Wednesday night’s 10894 loss to the Cleveland
Cavaliers with a sprained
left shoulder in the
first quarter and didn’t
return. The All-Star center scored three points in
8 minutes.
The 76ers, already
playing without All-Star

guard Ben Simmons,
never led against the
team with the worst
record in the Eastern
Conference and fell to
9-21 on the road.
Embiid had his left arm
in a sling and was in visible discomfort following
the game. He declined to
talk to reporters and had
an equipment manager
carry his backpack out of
the locker room, where
the quiet atmosphere
summed up the team’s
mood.
The Sixers are fifth in
the conference. Coach

Brett Brown said he
didn’t know how long
Embiid, who scored a
career-high 49 points
Monday against Atlanta,
will be sidelined.
“I’m really unsure,”
Brown said. “It’s not
coach-speak, but this is
part of the NBA landscape. That’s why you try
to accumulate talent and
depth.”
Al Horford said his
team had a difficult time
adjusting without Embiid, who averages 23.8
points and 12 rebounds.
“Obviously, we play

Tomcats

From page 6

in any of his first three
starts in August, a span
of 18 innings.
It took him about six
weeks to recover from
surgery.
“They told me I could
start throwing in six
weeks, but it was weird
for a little while,” Gray
said. “It got super swollen. I was doing physical
therapy for awhile but
I started throwing way
early, three or four times
a week. Six weeks after
the season, I felt good.”
His first test came this
week when he pitched
two innings of a spring
training game against
Oakland. He allowed two
hits and threw without
problem.
“I was trying to throw
my fastball and just rip
it the whole time,” Gray
said. “I checked a lot of
boxes. I got my mind
right.”
Castillo and Gray will
anchor a rotation that
includes Trevor Bauer,

left-hander Wade Miley
and Anthony DeSclafani.
The pitchers also should
get a boost from Cincinnati’s offseason makeover
that added second baseman Mike Moustakas and
outfielders Nick Castellanos and Shogo Akiyama.
The Reds think they
have enough starting
pitching and offense
to contend in the NL
Central after six losing
seasons.
“We’re reinforcing each
other with a little bit of
pressure in a good way,
a friendly competition
way,” Gray said.
Notes: 3B Eugenio
Suárez and OF Nick
Senzel are still limited
as they recover from
shoulder surgery. Suárez
had surgery on Jan. 29
to repair torn cartilage
in his throwing shoulder. He can’t swing a
bat with both hands or
throw, but he’s taking
ground balls. Senzel
had surgery for a torn
labrum in September
and is playing catch. SS
Freddy Galvis has a sore
shoulder and won’t play
until next week.

NAPLES, Italy (AP) — If
any thoughts were creeping into their minds that the
Tokyo Olympics might be
canceled because of a viral outbreak, elite swimmers Katinka
Hosszú, Chad le Clos and Sarah
Sjöström certainly didn’t show
it during a strenuous two-hour
training session Wednesday.
It was only after the three
swimmers — who have won 11
Olympic medals between them
— stepped out of the pool that
they revealed serious concerns
over the fate of the games during a series of interviews with
The Associated Press.
“For the athletes the best
(solution) is just to focus on
your preparation. … I see the
news, but in my mind I’m prepared until it’s on. So I have to
be ready,” said Hosszú, whose
nickname is “The Iron Lady.”
“I really can’t even imagine
having the Olympics canceled.
For athletes, it’s a nightmare,”
Hosszú added. “That’s our life
— preparing for the biggest
event in swimming.”
Tokyo Olympic organizers
and the Japanese government
responded Wednesday to comments made by former International Olympic Committee
vice president Dick Pound, who
said the 2020 Games could be
canceled if the virus isn’t contained.
“Our basic thoughts are that
we will go ahead with the Olympic and Paralympic Games as
scheduled,” Tokyo organizing

next with 16 points, followed by Aidan Sang and
McKeehan Justus with seven each. Kyelar Morrow
and Eric Chapman had four points apiece in the win,
while Trey Peck scored three and Nick Smith added
two.
David Stewart led Van with 20 points, followed
by Austin Javins with 15. Kalen Booth and Hunter

liers shot 58% in the first
half and led 70-50 midway through the third
quarter. Philadelphia cut
the lead to 85-80 in the
fourth, but got no closer.
Cavaliers forward
Larry Nance Jr., who
had 13 points and 15
rebounds, said Embiid’s
absence made a difference.
“You never want to see
that,” Nance said. “He’s
one of the best, most
dominant players in this
league. Anytime he’s not
there, same with Ben, is
important.”

not just to Tokyo, I’m looking
beyond that.”
Sjöström was supposed to
swim at a meet in Milan this
weekend that was canceled
because of the spread of the
virus in northern Italy.
“Of course, it’s definitely on
my mind,” Sjöström said. “We
are reminded about it every day.
I read the news. It’s a bit scary.
“People are traveling so much,
even me, so that’s why the virus
is spreading,” the Swedish
swimmer added. “I hope we can
calm it down very, very soon.”
The swimmers were taking
part in a training camp for the
Energy Standard team coached
by James Gibson. Hosszú, who
is not part of the team, was
invited as a guest.
“Yes, there is a chance that
the Olympics could be canceled,” Gibson said. “And if it
is, you just deal with that. You
have to trust the powers that be
that they’ll never put people in
risky situations.”
More urgently for Gibson is
deciding if he should keep his
swimmers in Italy until Saturday as scheduled or go back earlier to the team’s base in Turkey.
“We have an exit strategy. The
swimmers themselves are aware
what’s going on but that doesn’t
change your training,” Gibson
said. “You still go train as if
you’re going to go and become
an Olympic champion. You don’t
let go of that.
“Everyone in the world is in
the same boat.”

committee CEO Toshiro Muto
said in an abruptly called a
news conference. “For the time
being, the situation of the coronavirus infection is, admittedly,
difficult to predict, but we will
take measures such that we’ll
have a safe Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
More than 80,000 people have
been infected and more than
2,700 killed since the viral outbreak began in China — with
the bulk of them in that country.
Five deaths in Japan have been
attributed to the virus.
The Olympics are scheduled
to open on July 24.
“Honestly there is no really
good option if it’s canceled,”
Hosszú said, adding “postponing is definitely better than altogether cancel.”
With the virus spreading in
northern Italy, Hosszú moved
up her departure from Naples
by two days to Thursday.
Le Clos, who calls himself a
“germophobe,” said he always
travels with a face mask.
“We have to just not shake
too many hands, not touch too
much stuff,” the South African
said in an interview arranged
through his sponsor, Arena. “It’s
a terrible thing that’s happened.
Hopefully it can get cured soon
and we’re going to proceed to
the Olympics.
“Obviously I don’t want it
to be canceled, but if it gets
canceled I will train another six
months or another year,” Le
Clos added. “My approach is

Sen. Theresa Gavarone, of Bowling Green, would
prohibit schools and school sports regulators from
requiring advance waivers or otherwise restricting
participants’ religious apparel unless it causes a
“legitimate danger” for fellow competitors.
The proposal was supported by Noor Abukaram,
the Sylvania Northview runner who was disqualified over her hijab last fall.
At the time, Ohio High School Athletic Association rules banned most head coverings and caps
unless competitors got waivers in advance if they
needed exemptions for religious reasons. Her coach
has acknowledged making a mistake by not getting a waiver but indicated he hadn’t thought it
was needed because it hadn’t been an issue at prior
races.
OHSAA has since changed its rules to let referees
approve use of religious head coverings if a coach
asks before a competition, without a formal waiver.

Deep WR class jockeying at NFL scouting combine
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
If your favorite NFL team
doesn’t have a Tyreek Hill,
Julio Jones or Courtland Sutton streaking down the field,
making cornerbacks cringe
and constantly redefining the
highlight catch, just wait.
Chances are good they’ll
grab one in this year’s draft.
The NFL scouting combine
in Indianapolis features a tantalizing wide receiver class
unlike anything ever seen at
the league’s annual gathering
of top prospects.
“You’ve probably heard every
GM and coach talk about this
wide receiver class; it is a
good one,” Jets GM Joe Douglas said. “Just watching them
go across the stage, there is a
lot of talented players and we
see how much the pass game
affects the National Football
League. So we do feel good
about this group.”
Actually, teams feel great
about the 2020 receivers.
Teams are more willing than
ever to bypass the old waitand-watch standby for a plugand-play approach with bigger,
faster, quicker pass-catchers
coming out such as Calvin Ridley and D.J. Moore who made
an immediate impact in 2018,
followed by Deebo Samuel,
DK Metcalf, Marquise Brown,

five years, we’ve seen a lot
of guys make immediate”
impacts, said Ravens general
manager Eric DeCosta.
“Especially last year, if you
look at the class, you’ll see a
bunch of guys come in right
away and make big plays. We
were fortunate last year with
Marquise and even Miles
(Boykin) to a degree made
plays for us. We’re excited
about those two guys and we
look at this year’s draft class
as an opportunity for us to
improve at the position even
more.”
Every team does.
“I think it’s a combination of
things,” Washington Redskins
coach Ron Rivera said. “I think
teams are starting to understand how you use players.
But I also do think because the
ball is being thrown so much
in college football the receiver
is learning to be an explosive
guy.
“I also think the body types
of the receivers is changing,”
Rivera said. “I think they’re
getting bigger and stronger.
There’s a lot more guys that
are coming out that are ready
to go and are dynamic players.
The guys I think people are
really looking for are these bigger receivers who are dynamic
with the ball in their hands.”

Terry McLaurin and A.J.
Brown, who wasted no time
establishing their credentials
last season.
“There is a lot more receivers coming into the draft
because there’s just a lot more
receivers in college football
and high school football,”
Rams GM Les Snead said. “A
lot of teams running three,
four, five wides.”
It starts way before college.
“I think in today’s day and
age where these guys were
starting 7-on-7, it’s almost like
AAU basketball,” Packers GM
Brian Gutekunst said. “The
receivers are so much more
advanced in terms of their fundamentals coming into college
and the league than maybe
they have been in the past.
It’s really just the NFL offense
that will take time. So I think
there’s some guys sitting here
today that I think will have a
chance to make a pretty immediate impact, and I’m excited
about that.”
Receivers may still need to
adjust to the NFL’s press coverage but just as often they’re
the ones putting the DBs on
their heels from the get-go.
“Historically, receivers have
struggled a little bit with the
learning curve up to the NFL.
But in the last three, four or

Guys such as Colorado’s
Laviska Shenault, Alabama’s
Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs
III, Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb,
LSU’s Justin Jefferson, Arizona State’s Brandon Aiyuk and
Clemson’s Tee Higgins.
Just to name a few.
The wide receiver group is
“as deep as I’ve seen,” NFL
draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah
said. “I’ve got 27 wide receivers with top-three round
grades in this draft. And consider average 31 are taken.
We had a max of 35 taken in
(2015). So this is a really phenomenal group of wideouts.”
There’s someone for everyone this year, whether they’re
looking for a deep threat, a
crisp route-runner, a fearless
man going over the middle or
even taking the direct snap
like Shenault did so often at
Colorado.
“Receiver, of all positions,
probably comes in the Baskin
Robbins 31 favors,” Bills general manager Brandon Beane
said. “Size, speed, length, run
after catch, all sorts of variables.”
This year, especially.
“I think there could be a
lot of guys drafted all the way
through from 1 to 7 (rounds),”
Beane said. “We were talking
about it the other day. There’s

going to be guys drafted on
the third day of the draft who
may come in and take a veteran’s spot on a team. It’s that
deep.”
Las Vegas Raiders GM Mike
Mayock noted an average of
12 wide receivers have been
selected in the first three
rounds over the past decade,
and this year’s group features
twice that number who are
graded by teams as top-100
talents.
“So, there’s depth throughout and there’s quality up top,”
Mayock said.
And there’s jockeying for
cream-of-the-crop status when
they showcase their skills during on-field workouts at Lucas
Oil Stadium in prime time on
Thursday night.
The best of the bunch is
probably Jeudy or Lamb, but
they all sport that one attribute that premier pass catchers also possess: a confidence
bordering on cockiness.
Jeudy said he’s the best, but
he’s hearing everyone else say
they’re the best.
“I feel like everybody should
think they’re the best receiver
coming out in the class,” Jeudy
said.
They all might end up being
part of the best wide receiver
class ever.

to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

We would love to have you join us!

Faith & Family

On behalf of our church
family I want to welcome
you to visit us at Trinity
Congregational Church.
We would consider it a
blessing to have you with
us. We welcome you as God
welcomes all of us, just as
we are. Here at Trinity we
believe in equipping people
for the Kingdom work that
God has laid out for each of
us. I believe that it is our duty
to go out into our community
and make disciples (Matthew
28: 19), to love our neighbors
as ourselves (Mark 12:31),
and to take the church
outside these four walls.
