Thi s is in fact why the Good
News of the Gospel (which
means, "good m;ws") is such
good news!
Even so. I suspect that the
greatest source of disdain
.from Christian ity's cri t ic~ is
the frequent attempt to isolate individual claims of
Christianity and apply them
accord ing to these other
worldv icws. An unfortunate
mistake - for if one cannot
conce ive of a natural
propensity for sin in the
human being. t~en the idea
of a Savior is irrelevant; if
one cannot shed the image of
God as an imperso nal force,
redem ption (as in the
Christian idea of reconciliation with God) is alien; and
if one can only imagi ne God
as punitive judge, then the
ideas of "Heavenly Father"
and "Good Shepherd" are
unfathomable.
"For to those who are perishing the message of the
cross is foolishness , but to us
who are being saved it is
God's power" (I Corinthians
I: 18 NIV).
Thus, for us to see the
Good News of Jesus for what
it is, the wisdom of God, then
we must be willing to relax
our grip on our preconceived
notions of what the world is
reall y like, what people are ·
really capable of. and Who
God really is. ·

Where is the schol ar? Where

wi sdom. and God's weakness is stronger than human
strength " (I Corinthians
1:19-25 NIV) .
The Good News of Christ
grants me peace within
though the world may war
without. The Goad News of
Chri st gives me a well-spring
of joy though sorrow may fill
my cup. The Good News of
Chri st is a shelter of hope
though storm s -of despair
may hammer at my spirit.
And the Good News of

But what if certain small
nations, perhaps including
some ruled by reckless dictators who could not ·be counted on to behave sensibly, .

DEAR ABBY: 1 am a 13year-o1d girl. One of my best .
friends, '"Emmy," has ,been
doing ·something I. think is
very dangerous. She has been
dating online with people' she
has never mel. She told me
she recen tly had gotten
engaged. Abby, she's only 14!
Emmy doesn't have a ring

her she will get hurl. but she
won't listen . She has actually
gone to meet some of these
people. But her parents and I
go with her to make sure it
isn't some pervert in hi s 50s.
I really don't know what to
do that won' t make her mad at
me or cause me to lose a friend .
Please help. - WORRIED IN
COITONTOWN, TENN.
DEAR WORRIED : It
appears you not on ly have
more brains thim your 14year-old friend. but also more
.than her parents. Why they
would tolerate. much less
encourage. their daughter 's'
o nline roma ntic liaisons bog-

gles the mind.
If yo u. want to be her
friend. you have my blessing;
she certai nly needs one.
However, please do .not
accompany her to any more
of those meetings. The next
person might not be. a pervert
in hi s 50s. but a couple of
perverts in their 20s or 30s,
and you cou ld be putting
yourself in danger.

the reception, the usual protocol· took place - includi ng
the bride tossing her bouquet
over her shoulder.
When the announcement
was made. 1 got up from the
table to join the other si ngle
women, and my daughter-inlaw 1not the mother of the
bride) mot ion ~d to me to
come to her table. She was
frowning and shaki.ng he r

I wen! over, and she told
me in a scolding tone that it
\\Cas "inappropriate" for me to
join the youn ge r women
because I was actually considered a widow and not ''lingle.'' She <ll so ·told me that
catching the bouquet was
intended for people who had
never been married, not ·people like ·me. .
Abby, I am 65, young at ·
heart, and attracti ve enough
that people tell me I appear to
be in my early 50s. I lead an
act ive life .. and date and
square dance two or three
times a week. I didn't join the
others. but retreated back to
my table.
What is your take on this?
Was she right that I wasn 't eli-

though I' m single.' And I'm
not ready to throw in the towel
yet. - TEXAS WlDOW
DEAR WIDOW: You had
as much right as any of the

wished. Putting the best possible face · on it, you r daugh·ter-i n-law may have been

thing you might have done. ·

million , while Ahern and
Associates, Inc., bid $29.39
million. Mattox said the bids '
will have to be examined to
detennine if a contract should
be · awarded. The bids are
about $7 million to $8 million
htghe~ than anticipated.
· "On the surface, it looks
like they are good bids, but
we are currentl y evaluating
them," he said.
. A combination of factors,
including skyrocketing costs
for materials, pro, bably contributed to the bids t;,xceeding
estimates, Mattox said. In
addition to the state review.
the b1ds also .w1ll have to meet

with the approval of the
Federal
Highw ay
Administration, which should
not take long, he said.
State Sen. Charles Lanham
(R-Mason) met with Matlox
earlier thi s week and said it is
gratifying to see the longawa'ited U.S. J5 project fi nal ly move from the planning to
constru ction phase.
:'It . just show s -our hard
work is actually coming to
fruition," Lan()am said.
Remaining-patient is a challenge. but Lanham said he
reminds himself of how much
has been accomplished in ~he
p_as t 12 months. Gov. Joe

Manchin, Sen. 'Robert Byrd
(D-W.Va.) - and U.S. Rep.
Shelley Moore Capito (RW.Va.) all have said they ani
commilled to seeing -U.S. 35
through.·
·
"Maybe it's not moving forwaid as fasl as we woul d like.
but there has been more done
in the past year than ever
before," Lanham said .
One can't help but wonder
if Jack Fruth is somewhere
smiling. For years. the community-minded
pharmacy
owner worked side-by-side
co-chairman with Lanham on
' the U.S. 35 Commitlee. Sadly,
Fruth passed away last year,

as

and did nul li ve lo see the
hi ghwa y completed , but it
looks like all of his hard work
is going lo be rewarded.
Later thi s year. the stale is
expected to solicit bids for a .
twe>-mile connect ing road
from the new interchange to
W.Va. 34, for which the
money already is in place.
From there, it's west toward
Mason County.
"This is a very important
project to both Mason and .
Putnam counties," Mattox
said. '•'We' re gqing to have the
interchange and the connector
under contract this year, so
we're on our way_,
