Trends
Obesity trend going in wrong.direction
Dear Editor:
Trends are very useful and worth watching. They tell us what
direction things are going and whether that is for good or bad .
For months now we· have been hearing about obesi;y in many
of our children. Within four years. scientists say, nearly half the ·
children in Nonh and South America will be overweight. "We
have truly a global epidemic which appears to be affecting most
countries in the world,'' says the Chairman of the International
Obesity Task Force. ·'This is going to be the first generation that's
going to have a lower life expectancy than their parents," said Dr.
Phillip Thomas who wurks with obese patients. "It's like the
plague is in town and no one is interested." The impact on the
health care system will be dnunatic in not tpo many years, unless
folks, especially parents, get involved.
Another issue where parents need to get. better informed· concerning their children is in the area of promiscuity, which often
results in abonion. While abortion of Americans is now on a
decline, it has been a disaster not only for the tony-five million
who lost their lives, but will soon impact those nearing retirement.
With fewer worker> to suppor:t those retiring, the Social Secll!ity
system is in trouble. Had this carnage not occurred, 18 to 20 'million would now be in the work force. Would it be also possible
that jobs would not be exponed since young, skilled Americans
·
could fill them'
Another trend also has significance to the population. For years
over half of Christians were nor registered to vote. Of tho.se who
were Tegistered. only about half actually bothered. to vote.
Contrast this w.ith around seventy percent of lmqis voting in a
recent election. Now, there is a 'positive sign of an awakening of
the Christian community. Since believers have a dual citizeqship,
both in this country and the world to co~e. they are obliged to
take both citizenships seriously. Sure, there will be criticisms of
secularists that say Christians should stay behind their stained
glass windows. but what group is better prepared, or should be, to
speak to the issue of moral clarity1 This .is a trend that has been
long dev.eloping. but should be welcomed rather than resisted.

of sexual promiscuity. And
we can all be thankful for

Morse's book is the sex-ed

point: Don't be so closeminded when it comes to sex
because it's about more than
you. Morse argues that,
"Human sexuality is the
great engine of , sociability.
Sexuality builds up the relationship between the couple,
and
this
relationship
becomes the basis of higher
society."
Sex matters. Not just to the
two (or more?') actively participating, but it has ramifications. If you're married,
one . act may change the
structure of a family for generations. If you're not, what
if there's a pregnancy? If
you ' re cheating on a spouse,
take a look at family courts
or classroom discipline prob!ems or talk to, your local
police precinct for stories
about some of the pathological ramifications. Sex is a

After you have decided, look at the North
hand as well. How you would plan the
play in five clubs? West leads. the spad,e
queen.
Most play that a new suit IS for~ing for one
round, usually showing at least a si)(-card
suit and 16 hig h-c~rd points. As a memory-jogger, think 6 and 16. II iS the same
when you respond to a ~ak-two openIng.
Having said that, South might bid three
no~trump. (North should pass, trusting his
partner.) But four clubs is sensible (as IS
a jump lo five clubs). Opposile four clubs,
North might raiSe, but would probably
rebid fQur. hearts because of his suit's
strength. South Would retreat to five
clubs. (NOte 'that four hearts can be
delealed by three lricks.)
In fiVe clubs, you must hold your loSses to

trump.;
