Bonds ~oubles on first pitch as season starts
BY RONALD BLUM
PRE~S

Jimmy Rollins waited for
his last at-bat to keep the
hitting streak alive. Barry
Bonds didn 't wait for anything.
Rollins was 0-for-3 with a
· sacrifice fly before dou ·bling in the eighth inning of
the Philadelphia Phillies'
13-5 loss to St. Louis on
Monday. He extended his
hitting streak to 37 games,
19 shy of Joe DiM~ggio's
record .
"I've been waiting five or
six months, sol didn 't mind
waiting," Rollins said. " It
was good to get the first
game out of the way."
DiMaggio holds
the
record streak for both a single season and over two
seasons. Rollins can only g(l
after the latter mark.
"Records are meant to be
broken and it's good to have
an oP.portunity to chase
them,' Rollins said. "But
I'm more focused on how
we do as a team."
Bonds, who's chasing a
certain record him self,
jumped on the first pitch he
saw on opening day, doubling to deep center field
against Jake Peavy in San
Diego.
The San Francisco Giants
star's hit fell about 20 feet
short of ·home run No. 709
and bounced over the fence
for a ground-rule double.

place and 48 to break Hank

catcher Jason LaRue was

Displeased
VVhy wasn't

Dear Editor:
!learned something the other day after over 20 years of service from this water company.
Our home is 12 years old but we live on the same property.
This is our third hot water tank in I0 years, costing over $500
each (natural gas bottom vent). I started looking over the
pipes and condition of the inside of the tanks to discover the
reasons why everyone was going bad.
I took my pipes to the office to show them the condition of
the lines. I was called later that day and told not to use galvanized pipe only copper or plastic. I 'wonoered why after so
many years that this was the first time I was told that fact. The
only galvanized pipe in our system was the nipples that come
with the hot water tank and they were rubber lined.
We cut the last tank in half and the inside was as corroded ..
as the nipples were on the top. I suggested to the water office
that they purchase a water softener for the whole system and
charge each customer a small amount monthly to cover
expenses. After researching, !have found that there is money
available for that softener from a grant. It was just never used.
Why is it that the money was not used? I can't see why we
customers must go through the trouble of getting our own
water softeners or replacing the 'tanks and faucets often, when
the grant could be used and it would help everyone on the
water system.
Thanks for letting me vent.
From a displeased customer,
Judy McDaniel

Q

"A bndge player lrom Anlrim I Passed
when his partner doubled. / Was that said
partner troubled? J No, with a gun he shot
him!" Mary Curran, Las Vegas.
T~is week we ere seeing how tracking th~
opponents' high-card points can turn
"guesses" into certainties. This deal is
another e)Cample. Look only at the North
and South hands. After East passes, you
(South) open one spade, partner raises
to three spades, and you go on to gam·e.
We.s lleads lhe clu~ queen. Whal.would
be your plan?
North's response is a game-invitational
limit raise, showing an eight-loser hand
and (usually) 10-12 supporl points.
West's openi ng lead marks East wrth lhe •
ace and king of c),bs. (With !he club ~ng
as well, Wesl would haV. led the king, nol
the queen. And West wouldn 't have led
lrom the ace-queen-jack of clubs against
a suit contract.) The defenders cash a
second club trick, the n shift to a spade.
Mer draw1ng tru mps, you should lead
hearts to find out who holds the ace.
When it turns out to be East. he is known
to have 11 points: lhe club ace-king and
heart ace. And since East passed as
cannot have the diamond
dealer,
queen. Play a diamond to yout ~ng and
finesse th rough We st.
Now loci< al lhe EaSI hand. Wou ld you
pass as dealer?
With ace, ace-king, a decent suit to
name. and no rebid problem, I would
open one club. Here it would work well
because South would assume I had the
diamond queen to lUStily my bid. It pays
to mix it up.
