Reunion of husband,
ex-wife only temporary
BY KATHY MITCHELL
AND MARCY SUGAR

Dear Annie : My husband and I have· been
together for six years, and
we married five months
ago . It 's a second marriage
for us both .
My hu sband has a 30.year-old son. ''Tommy,"
who lives with his fiancee
halfway across the country.
Tommy recently was diagnosed with aggressive
facial cancer and has to go ·
through radiation treatment
and have multiple surgeries
a11d reconstruction. My
husband made one weeklong trip to see Tommy. He
told me he was going to
stay in a hotel, but when he
got there, he wanted to be
do se to his son, so he
stayed ·with Tommy. My
husband's ·e,..-wife also has
been staying there.
Tommy has a two-bedroom apartment. Needless
to say, I was uncomfortable the whole time he was
gone. I just recently found
out that my husband is
planl)ing another trip.
Wheh we discuss it, he
gets' very defensive. I have
let him know the next time
he goes, I would like to
come and show my support. I have met Tommy
several times, and we get
along welL I have sent
cards, flowers and pictures. What else can I do to
make things better? Trying To Help
Dear
Trying:
Sometimes it's best to send
love anti support from a
distance. While Tommy
doesn't have to clean up
for Mom and Dad, he
might feel obligated to be
on better behavior for a
stepparent, which could be
stressful for him. And
although caring for their
son may create a bond for
vour husband and his e,.., it
ls temporary and . revolves
around their child. If the
visits become longer and
more frequent, you might
buy yourself a ticket to
come along. In the meantime, give your husband a
lot of TLC when he
returns. He needs comforting, too, and you should be
the one who provides it.
Dear Annie: I am a gay
male. I have been out to
my fami'ly for years.
However, the other day, I
was at my aunt's :house,
and her son and his entire
family were there. I made
some comments to her
granddaughter aliout how
pretty I thought she was
-and how, with her looks, I
didn ' t think she would
have any problems finding
a guy.

Dear Editor:
Mr Weedy (Sept. 14) maintains that those of us who believe
that 9/11 was an inside job are either stupid or unpatriotic. On
what speci fic factual grounds does he assert this? I have devoted qu ite a lew letters to the issue over the past five years, as
have otl1cr.s of the nationwide Sept. II Truth .Brigade.
I despise blugs. I use oftlcial documents for the basis of my
·own ;~ssertions. I have stLtdied PENAC and its contention that
a "new Pcm·i Harbor is needed,·· and the Downing Street Memo
to draw my conciLosions.
Mr. Weedy has bought into the myth that Al-Quaida (AI·
CIA-da) is a worluwide institution of immense sophistication.
In fact, it is a largely tictive organization designed to portray a
single. great hobgoblin enemy. Many of its members underwent special training and indoctrination at Foot Bragg in the
em·Jy 1980s. When this nation's elite complains about its own
methods being compared to terrorists, it's rather like. Dracula
gagging on the rank stench of his own rapidly-decomposing_
victims.

Sir Winston Churchill said , "The reser11e
of modern assertions is sometimes
pushed to extremes, in which the fear ol
. being contradicted leads the writer to
strip himsell of almost all sense and
meaning.•
Bndge journalists fear being contradict·
ed. However. ever since the appearance
of the Deep Finesse program, I receive
much less mail (a· or snail). Will this deal
generate any correspondence? Look
.only at the West hand . What would you
lead againsl five diamonds?
Whenever an opponent has a good long
minor suit. he Will alway~ be thinking
about three no-trump, not five ol his
minor. So, wl1en South does not bid
three no·trumP over three hearts, it IS
almost certain that he does not nave a
club stopper
Th1s sl1ould persuade West to select the
club ace. Although leading from an ace·
queen hOlding against a suit contract is
not normally recommended , here the
bidding suggests that it won't cost a
trick. And after two rounds of clubs,
South would have to guess the trump
suit, which he probably would not do,
since taking a fi rst -round finesse is
almost twice as 9ood, mathematically
speaking, as playing for the drop.
But West led the heart five. Declarer took
East'S jack with his king and imm ediate·
ly drew two rounds of trumps. When the
Queen dropped. he pulled East's remain·
ing diamond, played a heart to dummy's
ace, ruffed a heart. led a spade to the
ace, and .threw two losers on the estab·
lished hearts to get home witt1 an over·
tnck. (He planned a similar approach,
including taking the spade finesse. if ttle
diamond queen did not appear.)

that have offered little of constructllla
value could finally lade from the scene.
You're ready to move on with new friends
who truly have something of value to
share.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) - Remember
objectives that may be ol great impor·
lance to you might not be to your associ·
ates. If the 1nterest isn 't there, they'll be
incOmpetent helpers at best.
LIBRA (Sept. 23·0ct. 23) · Usually,
you·re a Very diplomatiC pe rson in your
dealings · with others, but this might be
one of those rare days where you'll
speak. be tore you think. and, regrettably.
say things you'll bemoan.
"SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) - Give a
wid8 berth to a friend whose present
af1airs are rather calamit ous. If you get
100 close , your pal could draw you into
the nasty business and mak.e 11 your cataclysm, too.
SAGITTARIUS ~Nov. 23·Dec. 2t) Whethe1 you d~sire It or not, there·s a
strong chance your pe1sonality cou ~ d
make you the center of a11ention: This
can have its disad'Jantages. eSpecially i1
you"re not mindlul of your behavior.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) · !I your
v1ews are more emoiiOnal than logical,
Keep them lo yoursell. If e)(posed, they
could cause a fiery brouhaha and go up
aga inst someone who feels dillerentty.
AQUARIUS (Jan: 20-Feb. 19) - Think.
caretully before ir:wolving yourselt in the
affairs of a 1riand today. No matter how
well -intAntioned you are. II things di:m"t
work outto.his/her satisfaction, hard feel·

PISCES (Feb 20·March 20) - If it is left
to you to make a hard decis1on lhAt

backing altha majonty If there isn't har·

ARIES (March 21-Apnl19)- How people treat you In return all depends upon
on what your anltude is toward others. If
you appea.r to tte friendly, they"II be. too.
But if you're bruSque , expect gruff treat ·
men! in return.
TAURUS (April 20·May 20) -Take care
not to come on as over ly possessive ol
someone you love, becaUse It Is liKely to
bachllre on you . II youf good lntenlions

GEMINI (May 21 ·June 20 ) - You know

CANCER (June 21-Ju\y 22) - For the
sake ol expediency, you could be tempt·

you 're not completely sold on . Don't

HOUSTON
Aaron
Harang wasn't too worried
that it took six tries for him
to get his 14th win.
He knew it would come
sooner or later.
Chris Denorfia hit a tworun homer and Ryan Freel
had a two-run double to
back a strong start· from
Harang and lead the ·
Cincinnati Reds to a 5-4
victory over the Houston
Astros on Tuesday night.
Harang (14-11) allowed
eight hits and three runs in 7
2-3 innings, striking out
five without a walk. It was
his team-high 33rd start and
his first win since Aug. 20.
'"This late in the season
you're not going to be as
sharp as you were in April
and May," said Harang,
who improved to 4-0
against Houston this season. "It's just the griri<) of
September. Yo~j've got to
find a way to get it done. I
know if I'm in there seven
or eight innings every night
I'm doing the job."
Denorfia hit his first
homer of the season, and
second of his career, in the
second inning to give the
Reds a 2-1 lead.
"I didn't think 'it was out,"
Denorfia said. "I think it
maybe cleared it by three
inches, but that's enough."
Freel extended the lead to

4-1 with his double in the
fifth and Adam Dunn then
drove him in with a single.
David Weathers got the
last four outs for his 11th
save.
" It was really big for
Aaron to pitch as well as be
did," Reds manager Jerry
Narron said. "It's taken him
a while to get to 14. But
he· s had a great year no
matter what."
The Reds improved to I 04 against the Astros, marking the first time since 1995
they have won I 0 games
against Houston .
Luke Scott had three
RB!s for I he Astros.
With a runner on in the
bottom of the first, Scott hit
a ball into the gap in leftcenter that center fielder
Freel couldn't come up
with. Freel threw if toward
the infield and the ball took
a bad hop before striking
second baseman Brandon
Phillips in the left eye.
Phillips who was standing
in the infield near second
base, fell to the ground on
his hands and knees and
stayed there for a couple of
minutes. He then sat down
on the field while trainers
attended to him.
Narron said "everything
was hazy" for Phillips when
he left. He was taken to a
hospital where an optic CT
scan was normal as was an
eye test. He is listed as day -

to-day.
Scott added a solo homer
in the sixth inning and a
run-scoring double in the
eighth that made it 5-4 .
Astros rookie Matt Albers
(0-2) started in place of
Andy Pettine, · who was ~
late scratch so he could be
with his ailing father. ln just
his second start, Albers
allowed six hits and five
runs in 4 2-3 innings. He
learned that he would pitch
in the middle of batting
practice. ·
"l d\dn 't have time to get
nervous," he said.
Houston manager Phil
Garner thought Albers "did
pretty good."
"1 think maybe he made
two pitches that kind of hurl
him that looked like they
were mistakes," he said.
Houston's Adam Everett ·
homered in the· fifth. ·
Note.s: Pettine is to start
Thursday
and
Roger
Clemens' last home start of
the season remains set for·
Wednesday.
Harang
extended hi s streak of
games with three or less
walks to 78. ... Red s C
Jason LaRue extended his
season-high hittin g streak
to six games with a single in
the fifth. ... Astros 1B
Lance Berkman walked in
'the eighth, hi s 679th to '
move past Joe Morgan for

Browns'
McCutcheon
out for year
CLEVELAND CAP) Browns cornerback Dayton
McCutcheon will miss the
rest of ·the season with a
knee injury, another blow to
Cleveland's depth and leadership and more bad news
·for its banged-up secondary.
The
33-year-old
McCutcheon returned to
practice las! week for the
first time since undergoing
surgery on his right knee in
July. However, he hasn't
shown enough progress and
the Browns had little choice
hut to place him on injured
reserve Tuesday.
The club also signed rookie nose tackle Babatunde
Oshinowo from the practice
squad to the active roster,
and signed wide receiver
Kendrick Mosley to the
practice. squad.
A third-round pick by the
expansion Browns in 1999,
McCutcheon has been one
of Cleveland's steadiest
players .. He and kicker Phil
Dawson are the only players
remaining from the '99
sq uad.

Southern
from Page Bl
Rashell Boso had four
blocks, was 7-9 spiking and

Clarett still in
thoughts of Buckeyes
COLUMBUS (AP)
What's brewing today with

Buckeyes ...
BUCKEYE BUZZ: A day
after former star tailback

minimum of 3 1/2 years in

teammates and friends said
they still think of him.
"[' m praying for him all the
time," QB Troy Smith said

good one but he has to live
with those situations."
Coach Jim Tres'sel said he
was hoping Claretl, who Jed
the Buckeyes to the 2002
national title;- could tum his
life around.
"I like to think that he'll
have a plan for his growth
while he's taking care of
those consequences," Tressel

said. "And my feelings don't
change any for him. ! ·would
say this, like any situation
that arises, if you'll take it
and use it to grow, it's amazing what It can do for you. So
my prayer is that he !al<es that
time and creates a plan for his
life and that he'll have a wonderful life."
