RACINE- As part of their annual community service project seniors in Southern's FFA program donated their labor to
construct 12 new picnic tables for the large shelter house at
Star Mill Park . Each table cost $122 with the Racine Area
Community Organization donating $1200 which was collect·
ed when volunteers worked the gates at .the 2004 Meigs
County Fair. The remainder of the costs were picked up by the
Racine Park Board. The picnic tables are constructed of pressure treated wood and were made sturdy to deter vandalism or
theft. FFA and RACO Board Members that tried out one of the
new picnic tables were (from left) first row. Dale Hart, Josh
Pape, Derek Teaford, Josh Harris, Isabella and Libby Fisher,

Honor polia? qjJUetS
Dear Editor:
May J 5; 1 Lis Nmional Po ike Week. I JUSt learned that May
15 is a federally-recogni7eu Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Wall> in our nation·, capita l di<play over I7.000 names of
Americu\ heroe~ who !o~t the ir li\'c-., in our nation's war on
crime and terror.
Research will ~tpdate that numhcr by adding officers now
' 'lost" in history. (I do not know the time span represented by
the I7,000.) Learning these facts cau.sed me to· focus on the
living law entorcement officers in Ga llia. Meigs and Mason ·
<.:ounties, including the State Highway Pat1:t1l. I am ashamed
. for having taken them for granted. I respect and appreciate
their bravery in incredible situations, their regularly facing
uncenainties, and the \f,willingness to go above and beyond
the call of.duty.
Their integrity, patience . judgement, compassion and
dependability set a fine example for people in all walks of life.
Am I say ing they're perfect'' No. but neither am I and neither are you. Please join me in honoring them. God bless our
protectors.

We are looking at transfer bids. When
partnel" opens orie no-uump. if you bid
two of a red sUit, you ~how at least live
cards in th$ next-higher-ran_king suit. YOur
· hand may contain any high-c8rd counl.
So •. two diamonds promises hearts, and
two hearts indicates spades. (Opposite a
two-no-trump opening, transfer with three
diamonds or three·hearts.) '
After the responder makes a transfer bid,
usuaUy the opener jUst bids his partner's
suit at the mlnlfnum level. Remember, the ., ...
respon"der ml~ht have a very weak hand
and be planning to pass next - the socalled "drop dead" sequen·ce. But once In
·a harvest or hunter's moon, the opener
will have, a wond8rful hand for play. in
mum count with !our-cara Support and a
doubleton somewhere. Then, he may
"sup araccept" by jumping into partne~s
major- as in this deal
After North transfers with .two diamonds,
if South settles lor two hearts, North
would Pass:; he isn't quite strong enough
for a rwo-ho-!rump game~try. Bul when
Soutll jumps lo three hearls, North push es on to game.
Now to the play. The defenders take two
spades before shifting to a club. Declarer
draws lrumps, drives out the diamond
ace, taKes the next club, and . runs the
diamonds, discarding dummy's club ·loserS._ His Collects five hearls, th'ree diamonds and tWo clubs.
So, the opener jlJrftps into partner's major
when he has a maximum no-trump, lourcard support and a doubleton somewhere. Oc"casionally, this will ca~ry the
auction loD high, but more often it will
rea~h an exce,l1enl thin game ?r slam.
