The English ha\i'e some incorrect impres·
sions about the Uni1ed States: and vice
versa. For example, New YorK has about
43 inch~s of rainfall a year and Miami
some 58 inches. How much does l ondon
get?
And here is· a comment by Mark Twain
that wouldn't. meet with uni~;ers8 1 E ng li ~h
agreement: "How superbly brave is the
Englishman in the prese nce of the
awtulest forms of danger & death; & t1ow
abject in the presence of any & an forms
of hereditary rank."
One of the t1ardest parts of bridge is
spo~i ng a hidden danger. But it you · do
see the risk, that iS more !han half the
battle. In this deal, how would You try to
make six spades after West has led the
·
diamond two?
North's four-spade rebid promises tour·
card support and a maximum one-lell'el
opening bid. {For losing·trick-counl·userS,
it shows five losers.) Tt1en South used
Blackwood just to check !hal the opponents didn 't have two ~ces.
There seemed to be 16(1) easy tricks: fill'e
spades, two hearts, live diamonds and
four clubs. The only loser WOLIId be the
trump ace. Howell'er, when declarer won
lhe first trick and played a spade, East
grabbeP his ace and gave Wesl a diamond ruff: one down.
·sorry. partner, I sho uld have bid six nolrump,H said South al1er recove ring from
the shock.
·
"Maybe," replied ~orlh . "Bu t surely the
lead is a singleton. Just cash the ace-king
of hearts, discarding your second diamond, belore playing a spade."
London receives about 23 inches of rain
per annurri. 1 am · confiden t .that you

Heat entered the fourth

" We're obviously a better

but we can' t worry about .
' What if the big fella didn't
get in foul trouble.' and stuff
like that," Heat forward
Udonis Haslem said. "We
didn't play team defense ."
Earlier Tuesday, Brown
was unusually defensive and
testy in reacting to a report
on , ESPN.com that he'
already had agreed to
become president of the
Cavaliers.
. Brown has three years
remaining on a five-year

have made it clear they

from coaching.

"All my players ever • ask
is how I'm feeling," Brown
said. "They know I want to
coach, that's what I do.
Could you imagine me not
coaching?"
The players have regarded
the rumors surrounding
Brown as more of an annoyance than a distraction,
though. it is clear they aren't
too happy with the timiQg of
·the revelations about Brown .
possibly
leaving
for
Cleveland.
" We ' ve been in this situation before," Prince said.

Notes: O ' Neal did not
speak to reporters after the
game .... The 1999-2000 Los
Angeles Lakers were the
only team in NBA history to
go unbeaten on the road in

Detroit avoided falling
