ActOr Wilham Powell , who was no1 known
for his girth , said, "I highly recommend
worrying. It's ~uch more effective than
dialing."
·
At lhe bridge !able, declarer should worry
about every layout that could defeat his
contract. But sometimes he will worry
aboul the wrong risk. ln this deal , you are
in lour spades. West leads a low heart
Easl wins wi1h his king and shifts to the
diamond two. What should be his dial?
West's pre·emptive jump to four hearts
would not meel with universal approval.
Some would prefer two spade~. a cue-bid
raise: the cautious wou ld make -a three·
h~art pre·emptive raise; many would like
three spades, a splinter raise: and a ,few
would opt for four clubs, a fit.showing
jump announcing fiv9-ph.Js clubs , four·
plus hearts and the values for game.
South , conlidenl tha t East had shifted to
a singleton and trying to reduce the risk
of a ruff, won with his diamond ace,
cashed the spade ace, and continued
with another spade. But East won with his
queen and swilched accuraleiy to a club.
South had \o lose two spades, one heart
and one club
Thai was unlucky, but 1e1's go back.
Suppose declarer wins East's diamond
shift on the board and runs the spade 10.
Here. he wins the Irick and plays two
more rounds ol trumps, claiming an over·
trick. But suppose West could win the first
round of spades and give East a diamond
rul1. South would unblock the ace, win
Easl's club shifl, draw the remaining
spade with his ace, and run the dia·
mends, discarding his club losers.

from PageBl
us," defensive end Mike
Kudla said of the Iowa mismatch. "We had to either go
up or down from there. We
responded to that. Where we
are now, 9ur starting point
was really· that game. We
just grew from there and it
was one of those deals where
we got better each week."
· Iowa never lost again, capping a 10-2 mark by winning
its last eight games )ncluding

the Capital One ' Bowl, also
grabbing a share of the Big
Ten title with Michigan.
Now each team is 2-1 and
is recovering from an early
loss, hoping to take advantage of a fresh stan in the
conference season.
Tressel remembered that
the Buckeyes did their part
to turn the game into a rout
with a penalty tliat disallowed an 80-yard kickoff
r~turn and-two turnovers all in the third quarter.
"There
are
lessons
tl'p-oughout that game as to
how we could have played
much better," he said.
