.Driver believes unified teams strengthened with more knowledge
By Monte Dutton
NASCAR This Week
The year has been a downer for Elliott Sadler, the 30-year-old Ford driver who stood third in the Nextel Cup
points standings as recently as late
June.
Sadler faile\1 to make the Chase,
which left him philosophical as well
as, at the conclusion of the most 're·
cent race in Dover, Del. , racing for
11th in the season rankings.
"We (Sadler and teammate Dale Jarrett) are two of 30-something teams
that are very fru strated after Richmond of not making the chase, and
we're all team players, and we all want.
to run well;' said Sadler. "We feel that
we should run well. To drive for
Robert Yates is a great honor, and he's
been a winner and a champion, and we
, all think we need to do that each and
every year or have a shot at it."
So, predictably, Yates : the owner, is
making changes and trying to improve
the chemistry at a team that won a
championship with Jarrett in 1999.
Todd Parrott, Sadler's c.rew chief, is
moving back to Jarr~tt's operation.
Kevin Buskirk is handling crew-chief
duties for Sadler for the time being.
"We have nine races to see if this is
getting .us in the right direction," said
Sadler. "We're coming up to some
good tracks for us, and, hopefully, we
can put what we've learned into play,
and we'll just see how it all plays out."
Sadler, from Emporia, Va. , is · a
three-time winner in NASCAR's premier series. His first victory occurred
at Bristol on March 25 , .2001 , while
driving for the Wood Brothers. The
most recent victory was at California
Speedway on Sept. 5, 2004.
.
"I actually am pretty pumped up for
the rest of the season," Sadler concluded. "I can't wait becau se I think
Todd (Parrott) is definitely going to
get the (No.) 88 (Jarrett) running better than its run this summer. I think
we're going to continue on the pace
that we' re running on, and I think

Through the noisy street of

Paul had to say. He soon found
occasion to share, not only in

Areopagus (or "Mar's Hill").
So. after they had settled

prepared to hear what he had to

and began. "Men of Athens! I
see that in every way you are

How many ot us. 1! we are
honest. would want to be
known as bemg meek '.' When
we hear the word "meek'' we
often fall into the really diabolical trap ol equating the
meek with the weak when in
fact this could not be furthe•
from the truth. Our Lord was
certainly not weak. He was.
however. meek and this is
one of the fundamental qualities of the blessed life .
Of course, <IS with these
other qualities of the blessed
lite, we have other examples.
In the Book of Nuq1bers we
read, "Now the man Moses
was very meek. more than all
men that were on the face of
the earth." And. in fact. God
chose him "for hi s faith fulness and meekness." N0thing
at all is even intimated aboUt
weakness. So far from bemg
weak God "made htm great
to the terror ol his enemies."
And, at course, the author
of Hebrews tells as that
Moses "constdered abuse

he left Egypt. unafraid.of the
king's anger.. ." So how could
he be a great terror, unafraid
of kings, willing to suffer
abuse, and be weak at the
same time? Because he was
meek, not weak.
·Perhaps. then,'we should put
to rest once and for all any
idea that being meek is somehow an admission of weakness. Weakness. after all, does
not claim the earth as an inher, itance. Yet our Lord said the
meek shall inherit the eanh.
So II meekness is not w~ak

English translations no longer
even use the word "meek,"

"People like this are genuinely blessed," Boice says.
"They also possess the earth
because they take what God
spreads before them and
enjoy it, while others fight for
more and fail to enjoy even
what they have."
The great and wise
Solomon certainly agreed :
"The one who loves money is
never satisfied with money.
and whoever loves wealth is
never satisfied with income .
This too is futile ." And futility. just about perfectly sums
up life lived without meekness- a life of always wanting more, never having quite
enough, obnoxiously grasping at everything yet truly
possessing nothing at all,
least of all any sense of peace
and satisfaction.
So what is meekness? Really·
it is a life .lived in the holy fear
of God. "Riches and strength
build up confidence, but the
fear of the Lord is bener than
either. There is no want in the
fear of the Lord, and with it
there is no need to seek tor
help. The fear of the Lord is Re

a garden of blessing ... "
A life lived in the fear of the
Lord is a life lived meekly ,
because this tear is one of pro·
found respect and adoration,
trust and total dependence
leading to self-discipline and
obedience in the humble
acknowledgment that our total
worth and value as a person
derives from God alone.
This being so, then. we will
certainly be good-mannered
and exude a spirit of love
toward others. recognizing
that they. too, are of as much
value in the grand sche.me of
things as we are. This is all a
lite without fear, as we are
taught, a life without want, a
glorious life lived m the
d ,·inc garden of blessing.
Indeed, the meek are the
strongest, most confident and
courageous, most secure people on earth. This is far .from
an embarrassing quality. far
from anything of which to be
ashamed. This is a quality to
be admired and sought after.
Bur are we so meek? Ask
yourself today, "Can I claim
the promise of this beatitude?"

You can pay a lot to tell
your troubles to a professional counselor. Or you can
avoid the expense by calling
out to Mrs. Bloom.
Mrs. Who?
· You may have to be as old
as I am to remember the oldtime radio show "The
Goldbergs." When something pressing · was on her
mind,
Molly Goldberg
would talk over p,roblems
with her neighbor, Mrs.
Bloom.
Counselors today agree
that the state of our mental
health would be much
improved if we all had
someone to share our troubles with.
A Lutheran minister once
said to me, ''There was nothing more effective than the
old-fashioned 'kitchen counseling." My mother had no
training in counseling. but
the number of troubled and
anxious people who trekked
into h~r kitchen to talk with
her and went away feeling
better was legion. · .

"Can you imagine Jesus
setting up an office appointment for someone wlio needed help? He would have
taken him on a walk through

would have sat down together on a hillside to rest. It
would have been something

Isn't everyone, #£r all?

Probably the best way to
help another person is to say,
"Come on over." An invita!
tion is worth a thousand
words of hollow sympathy
to a person in trouble.
As an illustration, when
Elsie felt low and called
Agnes. Agnes listened and
said. "l ' tn sure it will all
work out, dear. I'd like. t6
talk with you longer, but
Bob and I are going out to
dinner and then we are going
to a show. Call me again,
honey. Promise?"
With that , Agnes hung up.
If Agnes had really wanted
to lift Elsie's spirits, she
should have sajd, "Why
don't you come over tomorrow night for dinne.r, Elsie?
I've just bought a roast. Bob
and l would love to see you.
I won't take no for an
answer."
That is an example of real
sympathy - the kind that
heals. · ,

Dear Editor:
Americans have be~n treated for the past week to confirmation hearings of John Roberts to become Chief Justice of the
