Dishwashing
detergent killed
hundreds of fish
in Ohio river
HARTVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Dishwashing detergent created foam that killed hundreds of fish this
week in a northeastern Ohio waterway, according
to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
The fish were found Monday in the Tuscarawas
River in northern Stark and southern Summit
counties.
An investigation determined that someone
dumped the detergent on the ground near a storm
drain in Hartville, an EPA spokesman said. Rain
then pushed it into the river, where it affected
eight miles of river and tributaries from Lake
Township to Springfield Township.
The EPA used six pumps to aerate the water,
It’s not yet known who dumped the detergent or
why it was done.

TODAY IN HISTORY
The Associated Press

Today is Thursday, Aug. 20, the 233rd day of
2020. There are 133 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
On August 20, 1964, President Lyndon B.
Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act, a
nearly $1 billion anti-poverty measure.
On this date:
In 1862, the New York Tribune published an
open letter by editor Horace Greeley calling on
President Abraham Lincoln to take more aggressive measures to free the slaves and end the
South’s rebellion.
In 1920, pioneering American radio station
8MK in Detroit (later WWJ) began daily broadcasting.
In 1940, exiled Communist revolutionary Leon
Trotsky was assassinated in Coyoacan, Mexico
by Ramon Mercader, a Spanish Communist agent
working at the behest of Josef Stalin. (Trotsky
died the next day.)
In 1953, the Soviet Union publicly acknowledged it had tested a hydrogen bomb.
In 1955, hundreds of people were killed in antiFrench rioting in Morocco and Algeria.
In 1968, the Soviet Union and other Warsaw
Pact nations began invading Czechoslovakia to
crush the “Prague Spring” liberalization drive.
In 1981, Michael Devine, a member of the Irish
National Liberation Army, died after a 60-day hunger strike at the Maze Prison in Northern Ireland;
he was the tenth and last hunger-striker to die that
year.
In 1986, postal employee Patrick Henry Sherrill went on a deadly rampage at a post office in
Edmond, Okla., shooting 14 fellow workers to
death before killing himself.
In 1989, entertainment executive Jose Menendez and his wife, Kitty, were shot to death in their
Beverly Hills mansion by their sons, Lyle and Erik.
Fifty-one people died when a pleasure boat sank in
the River Thames (tehmz) in London after colliding with a dredger.
In 2005, Northwest Airlines mechanics went
on strike rather than accept pay cuts and layoffs;
Northwest ended up hiring replacement workers.
San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Thomas
Herrion, 23, died of a heart attack shortly after a
preseason game against the Denver Broncos.
In 2008, a Spanish jetliner crashed during takeoff from Madrid, killing 154 people; 18 survived.
In 2017, actor, comic and longtime telethon host
Jerry Lewis died of heart disease in Las Vegas at
the age of 91.
Ten years ago: President Barack Obama invited
Israel and the Palestinians to meet face-to-face in
Washington the following month for talks aimed
at achieving an agreement to establish an independent Palestinian state and secure peace for Israel.
Five years ago: With a broad smile and an
upbeat attitude, former President Jimmy Carter
told a news conference in Atlanta that he had
cancer in his brain, and felt “perfectly at ease
with whatever comes.” (In March 2016, Carter
announced that recent scans had shown no signs
of cancer and that he no longer needed to receive
doses of an immune-boosting drug.)
One year ago: President Donald Trump abruptly
canceled an upcoming trip to Denmark, which
owns Greenland, after the Danish prime minister
dismissed the idea of the United States purchasing
the mostly frozen island.
Today’s Birthdays: Writer-producer-director Walter Bernstein is 101. Boxing promoter Don King

HEALTHY WORDS TO LIVE BY

Common tanning misconceptions
There are many falsehoods about tanning that
have circulated over the
years — and believing
these misconceptions can
lead to poor skin health.
Let’s set the record
straight on these top five
myths, so you’ll know
how to give your skin
the proper protection it
needs.
Myth #1 - A base tan
helps avoid sunburn.
Sun-tanned skin is
damaged skin. With prolonged exposure to harmful UV rays, your skin
will become darker with
a leather-like texture and
appearance. The best way
to avoid a sunburn is to:

Many people also
believe that if you don’t

However, anytime you
expose your skin to the
sun, you are increasing
your risk of skin damage.

Palestinians in Gaza rally
against Israel-UAE deal
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hundreds of
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday rallied against the U.S.-brokered deal to normalize ties
between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
Protesters burned Israeli and American flags,
trampled on posters of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Donald Trump, and
chanted “normalization is betrayal to Jerusalem and
Palestine.”
Unlike Palestinian protesters last Friday near the Al
Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City who
also burned posters of the Emirati crown prince, the
Gaza demonstrators stopped short of burning symbols
of the UAE — apparently not to antagonize the Gulf

The stock later backtracked to close at $462.83,
but it didn’t diminish a remarkable achievement
that came just two years after Apple became the

comes amid a devastating pandemic that has shoved
the economy into a deep recession and caused

But Apple and other well-established tech giants

pandemic has forced millions of people to work,

crucial, a factor that has caused investors to snap up
the stocks of the industry’s biggest players.

Point golfers
beat Wahama
in opener
By Bryan Walters
bwalters@aimmediamidwest.com

MASON, W.Va. — In all fairness, there really
wasn’t much of a home course advantage.
Visiting Point Pleasant secured three of the top
five individual scores and cruised to a double-digit
victory on Tuesday afternoon during a non-conference golf dual against Wahama held at Riverside
Golf Club in Mason County.
The Black Knights — who also call Riverside
their home course — posted a winning tally of
185, finishing 11 shots ahead of the host White
Falcons (196).
Brennen Sang led Point Pleasant and all golfers
with a 5-over par efforts of 40, good enough for
medalist honors. Conner Ingels of Wahama was
the overall runner-up with a 42.
Joseph Milhoan followed Sang for PPHS with a
45, while Kyelar Morrow and Jonny Porter completed the winning score with respective efforts of
47 and 53.
Alex Hill and Kaleb Pierson also added respective rounds of 56 and 58 for the Black Knights.
Ethan Gray followed Ingels for WHS with a 47,
with Brycen Bumgarner and Ethan Mitchell completing the team tally with respective rounds of 52
and 55.
Maddie Ohlinger and Aston Barnitz also shot
rounds of 56 and 58 for the White Falcons.

Top seeds toppled:
Bucks, Lakers stunned
in playoff openers
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — First it
was Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks,
unable to call upon what was one of the best
defenses in the league.
Then came LeBron James and the Lakers,
clanging 3-pointers off the rim to provide a
steady sound in a mostly empty gym.
These NBA playoffs already promised to
be the most challenging yet. They got a little
tougher Tuesday for the league’s top teams.
Milwaukee and Los Angeles lost their playoff
openers, the first time both conference No. 1
seeds have been beaten by the No. 8s to start
their postseasons since 2003.
So good for most of the season, the top seeds
are having trouble in the bubble.
There’s no home-court advantage to lose in
this postseason at Walt Disney World, making it
easier not to panic in what would normally be a
tougher predicament.
“No frustration because the game is the
game and we came in with a mindset to win.
We didn’t take care of business, but we’ve got
another opportunity on Thursday to even the
series and that’s my only mindset,” James said.
The Lakers knew they were in against a
tougher-than-usual No. 8 seed in the Portland
Trail Blazers, who came back from the
coronavirus-caused suspension of the season
healthy and then played their way into the
postseason by winning a play-in series.
Los Angeles didn’t help itself in trying to
slow down a hot opponent by shooting just
15.6% (5 for 32) from 3-point range and wound
up losing 100-93.
Milwaukee’s problem was on the other end.
The Bucks surrendered three 30-point quarters
— and 29 in its best period — to the shorthanded Orlando Magic in a 122-110 loss.
That was an especially poor performance
from a team that led the league in a number of
defensive categories and held opponents to a
league-low 41.4 shooting percentage. Orlando
made 49.4%.
“They played good. You’ve got to give that to
Orlando and we’ve just got to keep doing what
we’re doing and hopefully things in Game 2 can
switch around,” Antetokounmpo said. “But just
keep playing hard, keep playing together. That’s
all you can do.”
Neither team can blame its MVP candidate.
Antetokounmpo had 31 points, 17 rebounds and
seven assists. James had 23 points, 17 rebounds
and 16 assists, the first 20-15-15 game in NBA
playoff history.
But neither team has looked particularly sharp
in Florida. They had arrived at the restart well
ahead of their competitors for the No. 1 seeds
and were focused more on staying healthy than
getting wins in the eight seeding games leading
into the playoffs.

COVID-19 General Guidance (Including
Mandates and Recommended Best Practices)
As Governor DeWine
also noted, the Governor’s Office and Department of Health are close
to finalizing a new Health
Director’s Order. With
that comes two separate
mandates and recommended best practices
documents for schools
to follow for competitions, and the OHSAA
could issue consequences
for the violation of
these requirements as
prescribed in Bylaw 11,
Penalties.
The mandates and recommended best practices
are related to many of
the same mandates and
protocols already in place
for many other sectors as
they relate to symptom
assessments; facial coverings; social distancing;
cleaning and sanitizing,
and confirmed COVID19 cases/exposure to the
virus. The final versions
of those two documents
will be sent to schools on
Wednesday.
The Governor understands that interscholastic sports are different
than other forms of
competition because we
are education-based and
are able to implement
best safety practices and
have structure in place for
dealing with COVID-19
restrictions.
So, if we want our
students to have the
privilege of competing
in interscholastic athletics, it’s going to be up to
all of us to make sure all
mandates and protocols
are being followed. We all
need to be diligent and be
disciplined.
Capacity Limitations/
Students Dressing for
Contests Limitations/
Bands Restrictions
Spectator capacity for
our events will be limited,
with the specific details
to be listed in the guidance pieces. As Governor DeWine mentioned
today, an emphasis will
be on allowing families
and loved ones to see
students participate. In
addition, OHSAA requirements, based on guidance
from the Governor’s
Office, is for schools to

limit the number of players dressing for contests.
The limits are 60 in
football; 22 in soccer and
field hockey, and 15 in
volleyball. In addition, the
OHSAA, based on guidance from the Governor’s
Office, is limiting marching and/or pep bands to
performing only at home
contests.
Questions and Answers
on Why Are We Moving
Forward
Originally developed as
part of the July 31 Administrator Update when
the OHSAA affirmed its
position of starting our
practices as planned, the
OHSAA has updated a
series of questions and
answers related to why
we are moving forward
with our seasons.
All scenarios have been
discussed and, in making
its decision, the OHSAA
has had great collaboration with the Governor’s
Office; Ohio Department
of Health; the National
Federation of State High
School Associations; our
colleagues at other state
high school athletics/
activities associations;
members of the OHSAA’s
Joint Advisory Committee on Sports Medicine,
and members of the
Governor’s Sports League
Advisory Group.
A series of questions
and answers are posted
at: https://ohsaaweb.blob.

Clarity on “Spring Seasons”
As Governor DeWine
noted today, the OHSAA
is prepared to remove
the impediments in our
bylaws and regulations
that would otherwise
preclude schools from
playing fall sports in the
spring.
In other words, schools
that have opted out of fall
sports participation due
to the pandemic – meaning the school has not
participated in fall sports
during the currently
defined fall season – will
have an opportunity to
play their sports in the
spring.
However, a task force
will be needed to work
with our staff to create
certain parameters to see
what those spring sports
opportunities look like.
As the pandemic has
proved, this is an evolving
situation, so more details
will be shared with the
membership when appropriate.

Communications for the OHSAA.
