( I John 3: 14, 16-18 ).
·1 was talking with a friend
of·mine in a missions agency
operating in different parts of
the world. He mentioned that
he had j ust been on the phone
regardin g the fate of six
orphaned children from
Nepal (ages 6- 12). They had
been taken to an·orphanage in
India only to be turned away
for lac k of room and
resou'rces. The one who had
brought the m nearly gave up
in despair, prepared to leave
them to fend for' themselves
in a train station. "After all ,"
he thought .. "begging here in
this station will be better than
the life that they would have
had where I had found them .
Then hearing of one
orphanage that might yet take
them , he led them there. Run
by a little woman of God who
has a bi g faith in Jesus, she
simply said. "we have no
means to care for them, but I
cannot send them away.' They
max stay. Somehow, the 'Lord
will' meet the need."
When I shared this true
story from my friend with the
people of our church, even
the children were moved to
somehow work towards
meeting this need and. began
to give already towards the
need. Somehow they determined that they were called
by Gqd to address the physical needs of these six children. And, of course, in . the
meeting of these physical
needs, the love of God is now
moving in practical ways so
that the spiritual needs, the
eternal ones, may also be
engaged . .
What needs is God wanting
to address through you? Are
you "tuned in" to God's work
in your life enough to recog ~
nize His invitation? Can you
recognize the Kingdom of
God when you see it? Can it
be seen in you ?
May it be seen ever increas:
ingly more so in you as ' YOU
"hunger for more" of God in
your life.

But, the fall permanently

falling that bugs me out.
All of this, however, gives
rise to a delicate spiritual situation, for many Christians
have developed disdaiQ for
heights as well. The potential
for falling bugs them out, too.
Heights often characterize
the Christian experience. We
sing about "Higher Ground."
We· talk about moving up
closer to God becal\Se He is
most high. We exult in being
on the "mountain top."
Yet, it is exactly this very
concept that cripples many in
the Church simply because
heights present the potential
for falling. Falling represents
failure. No one wants to let
down the God of our salvation.

the saims we might comprehend the heights of life in
. Jesus Christ.
So, don't be afraid to climb
that tree!
One reason why we should
not be afraid is because God
is able to keep us from
fal)ing. Jude praised God for
that very r.eason, when he
wrote, "'Now unto Him that is
ab Je to keep you from
falling." It prevails upon us
to tru st God to keep us from
falling. He not only says He
is able, but He constantly
proves that He is able.
Furthermore, no matter
how hi gh the spiritual height,
God iS ulways hi ghe r, which
impart s to us a powerful con~: e pt. God is no t on the
ground to catch us if we fall .
Rather, He. holds us from
above to steady and stabilize
us from a fall ! ·That unclerstanding makes a .significant
difference for all daring to
get closer to God in their
Christian experience.
You see, l would not have
fallen out of that Mulberry
tree had someone been positioned above me to ensure
that I remain on keel, on balance, ·and on board.
By contrast, God is in such
position above us at all times
whereby He is able to keep
us from falling . It is time that
many embrace thi s keen spiritual truth .
If climbing real· trees, however, were what it took to get
spiritually closer to God, I
w.ould most certainly be hard
pressed.

al trick one . if South ducks, East should
shift to the heart nine. He knows lila!
declarer is holding up the club ace
because West wouldn't lead away from
that card at tr ick one. If South takes Irick
one and attacks spades. We st can wi n
with the ace and put East on play with a
club for the Key heart switch.
In either sce nario, the defenders collect

This is often done to save a' trick,' but
occas ionally it serves a different purpose
- as in t~is deal.
Some players sitt ing West would make a
takeout double. But with the ste rile 4-3-33 distribution , limited point-count, and
on ly three heans, I think it Is inadvisable .
Against lour spades, West leads the club
two. Suppose that East plays the club
king: th ird nand high. This doesn't cost a
trick in the suit, but It does give away the
cont ract. South wins with his ace and
drives out the spade ace using nonors
from hand. West may cash the club
queen an d play another club, but declar·
er ruffs on the board, unblocks his aceking of diamonds, draws trumps ending
in the dummy, and runs the diamonds,
discarding all of his hearts. (West must
cash his heart ace to stop the overt ric~.}
instead . let's have East put in the' club 10

NASCAR This Week

It's a lonely- and unfamiliar- position for veteran NASCAR driver
Sterling Marlin.
Marlin, who might have won the
championship had he not been injured
two years ago, now finds himself on
the outside looking in. With just eight
races remaining in NASCAR's
makeshift "regular season," Marlin's
chances of making the 10-driver, 10·
racl! playoff are practically nil, even
after a seventh-place finish in Chicago
last weekend.
"It's pretty frustrating," said the
Columbia, Tenn., resident "I mean,
for me it is. We can run (in the) top
five and win races .... You can't con·
trol it. You've just got to work hard on
your stuff.

that well for the first half of the year,

New En&Jand came true
For Bob Bahre, holding Cup
races in l'-lew England was a dream
come true. Bahre had to wait several years after building New Hampshire International Speedway before
he could even secure one date on
the schedule. But after Enoch Sta·
ley, the owner of North Wilkesboro
(N.C. ) Speedway, pa&sed away,
Bahre.seized the opportunity to buy
half of that track from Staley's
heirS. 0. Bruton Smith had bought
the other half and taken one Wilkesboro date to Texas Motor Speedway.
In 1997, Bahre secured a second
annual date for his Loudon, N.li .,
track by movln& the other Wilkesboro race.- Meanwhile ; bitterness ·
