East takes to .the air

W

hile the Big to West depends on the traditional rushing
offen se, the East is all about taking it to the air . And with ·
top quarterbacks John Navarre, Craig Krenzei and Jeff
Smoker gone, it' s time for the new stars to step forward .
Michigan· s wide reCei..,ers aTe as good as those of many
professional teams. With the big-play ability of Bray ion Edwards,
Steve Breaston and Jason Avant, new quanerback Matt Gutierrez,
a product ofCalifomia 's De La Salle High School. has all the
tools to be a star.
Ohio State's Justin Zwick and Michigan State's Drew Stanton.
will have a more difficult time in their first season at the helm .
Veterans"Kyle Onon (Pu rdue)~ Zack Mills (Penn State) and
Matt LoVecchio (Indiana) make the Big Ten Easl one of the most
dangerous·passing regions in the country.

and no one is turned away.
The Women's Health Clinic
offers comprehe nsive annual

including pap smears. clinical
breast exams, pelvic exams,
pregnancy screen ings, STD
testing and referrals as needed.

monthly Depo shots. All services require appointments for
the two clinics offered each
month . These appointment
only clinics are serviced by Dr.
Wilma Manstield, MD from
Holzer Clinic and/or April
Wells, RN, CNP from Albany
Medicine. The remainder of
this year's appointment schedule is as follows: Sept 9, Sept

Women's Health Service
Nurse, Barbara Viyaklija has
been on the job in Meigs
County fo r the past six
months. Since then. two disturbing trend s 'i n public
health have received the bulk
of Viyaklija 's attention: the
uninsured/underinsured, and
casual sex resulting in pregnancy and/or sex u~lly transmitted di seases (STD's).
The uninsured ha ve no
health . in surance while the
underin sured have some
heal th insurance but cannot
afford their high deductibles
thereby making their policies
useless unless a medical catastrophe occurs. These financial constraints inierfere with
preventative medicine by
postponing clinical breast
exams, pap smears and pelvic
exams among other health
screenings..
,
Viyaklija has recently seen
womeq over 60 who have
delayed mammograms for
nearly three years because
their husbands . lost their
insurance
benefits.
Mammograms are a valuable
tool in tile early detection of
breast cancer, If detected in
the earliest stages, there is a
95 % survival ra:te for breast
cancer which turns the wait
of those three years into a
potential death sentence.
Early detection of any cancerous cells saves lives which
is why most wpme11 should
have a pap test every 3 years
while others need to be
examined more often. Pap
tests such as those given at

Eagles not taking Bobcats go under the.
South Gallia lig~tly lights to simulat~~
BY BRYAN WALTERS

.

TUPPERS PLAINS - It should
be an energetic atmosphere Friday
night at Eastern High School as
Bryan ·Minear makes his heroic
return to the field. However, the
South Gallia Rebels plan to spoil
the party by trying to avenge last
season's 14-6 Joss.
It wasn't the loss that upset South
Gallia head coach Justy Burleson in
2003, more so how the Rebels lost. ·
SGHS had five drives reach the
red zone . and they only came away
with six 'points. Two fumbles and

two loss of downs allowed Eastern
to rally late and sneak out. of
Mercerville with the eight-point
victory. Burleson feels his Rebel s
cannot repeat that history and drive
away from EHS with a victory. .
"We can't afford to make the
same mistakes we made last year
and expect to have a chance to win,
especially on the road," said
Burleson. ·
.
Burleson also knows that Eastern
is returning a majority of its players
from last year, so his younger group
is going to have to be ready from
the opening kick-off.

win the East before leaving for Conference USA in

2005.
"It's kind of sad they're not wanting us to play
here for the MAC championship, but at the same
time, we' re not thinking about stuff like that. It's
not our decision," Said Marsha ll quarterback Stan
Hill.
Marshall coach Bob Pruett has said he doe sn't
like the game being played at a neulral site because
fans tend to slaY. away and watch the game on televtston.

having him back for one
more year. "
As for Bryan, he hasn ' t
forgotten the rough road he
has travelled and wants to
acknowledge everyone who
has helped him get back to
where he is today. And he is
going to do so on the field.
"I'm dedicating my first
game to everyone that has
been such an inspiration for
me," said a humbled Bryan
Minear. "I am really looking
forward to getting back out
there and playing football .'' .
It' s been a tenuous journey
for Bryan and his family, but
it will have the' fairy tale ending that his family has
always dreamed of.
"I told Bryan that my ultimate wish when he started
playin~ footba!l was to walk
wtth htm and hts mom across
ihe field on senior ni,sht,"
said Jim Minear. "It dtdn 't
matter if he was just wearing
a jersey or if he was in full
uniform this season, as long
as we got to take the picture
of that moment. It looks like
we will be doing that later
this year. He's my football
hero and our family couldn't
ask for any more."
