Red Cross issues
urgent call for blood
donors of all types
OHIO VALLEY — An emergency blood shortage is prompting the American Red Cross to issue
an urgent call for eligible donors of all blood types
— especially type O — to give now and help save
lives.
The Red Cross escalated its call for blood and
platelet donors after a difficult Independence Day
week for donations. More than 550 fewer blood
drives were organized by businesses and other
community groups last week than during a typical
week as individuals across the country celebrated
the holiday and enjoyed summer activities. This
could equate to as many as 15,000 fewer donations
than needed, causing donations to now be distributed to hospitals faster than they come in.
“Each and every day, individuals across the
country depend on blood and platelet donations
for lifesaving treatments and emergency care, so
it’s critical that people donate now to meet these
needs,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice president,
Red Cross Blood Services. “Whether you’ve never
donated or give a couple of times a year, you’re
needed to give as soon as possible to help save
patient lives. Yours may be the donation a patient
is counting on.”
This need is especially critical for type O blood
donors. Type O is the most in-demand blood
type and often the first be depleted from hospital
shelves during a shortage. Type O negative is the
universal blood type and what emergency room
personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious
situations. Type O positive is the most common
blood type and can be transfused to Rh-positive
patients of any blood type.
How to help To schedule an appointment to
donate, use the free Red Cross Blood Donor App,
visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS

The Rutland Fire Department, along with the Ladies
Auxiliary, take the lead on setting up the Rutland Ox Roast,
the village’s annual 4th of July
celebration. For two weeks
prior to the event these hard

workers pick and cook the beef
that will be sold by the gallons
at the event. They do not stop
there; they also help all the
days’ events run smoothly. For
example, they direct the traffic for the morning parade, so
those watching and participating are kept safe.
Following the parade, Post
39 members raised the American flag at the center of the
ox roast while the Marauder
band performed the National
Anthem. After, Post 39 members did a 21-gun salute.
Music and activities continued throughout the day in the
park leading up to fireworks at
the end of the day.

Appalachia looks to Asia to revive hopes
ST. CLAIRSVILLE,
Ohio (AP) — A slice
of Appalachia along the
Ohio River still struggling decades after losing
manufacturing jobs in the
steel, aluminum and glass
industries to overseas
competition is looking to
Asia to revive the region’s
fortunes with a more pliable product — plastic.
A Thai chemical company and, more recently,
its new South Korean
partner, are taking halting
steps toward building a
multibillion-dollar petrochemical plant in eastern
Ohio that would “crack”

molecules of ethane, a
byproduct of natural gas
drilling, into the raw
material used to produce
plastic products.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich
has said the project,
which would create thousands of construction jobs
and hundreds of permanent positions, would be
a “game changer.” Kasich
said in an interview with
The Associated Press that
the cracker plant could
draw in other companies
much like Honda did after
opening its Marysville
assembly plant in 1982.
“These hardscrabble

areas would clearly be
helped,” Kasich said. “I’m
not saying if this comes,
everyone’s problems will
be solved. But these are
great developments.”
Thailand’s PTT Global
Chemical has been working on plans to build a
cracker plant for several
years, injecting optimism
in an area of eastern Ohio
and northern West Virginia where the effect of
a shale gas boom on the
local economy has been
helpful but limited.
But PTT also has
engendered skepticism
after failing to keep prom-

ises about when it would
announce its intentions.
At a news conference in
March, the PTT-Daelim
partnership said it would
decide by year’s end.
Lou Krupa, an 80-yearold resident of Shadyside,
a village a few miles from
the proposed site in an
area of Belmont County
called Dilles Bottom, said
PTT lost credibility when
it reneged on a promise
last year to announce a
decision by the end of
2017.

BUCKEYE STATE NEWS

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A former
Ohio man who gained fame from playing corpses in television shows and
movies is getting ready to say his final
“goodbye” and retire.
The Columbus Dispatch reports
Chuck Lamb says he originally pursued his acting career as a “bucket list
thing.” He dubbed himself the “Dead
Body Guy” in hopes of getting roles
and set up a website under that name.
His debut was in 2006 on the TV show
“What I Like About You.”
The 60-year-old former Galloway resident, credited with 11 on-screen deaths,
has been profiled by The New York
Times and other news outlets. He says
he now believes his story of achievement makes people feel good.
Lamb says he would like to be on
“The Walking Dead” before retiring to
his Florida home.

Newspaper aims to
help ex-inmates
CINCINNATI (AP) — A newspaper
available in jails in Ohio and Kentucky
is intended to help inmates build successful lives after their release.
Tracy Brumfield started publishing
the Re-Entry Into Society Empowered
or RISE paper in 2017 with a grant
from People’s Liberty and the Haile
Foundation, WCPO-TV in Cincinnati
reports. The publication includes stories that Brumfield believes are inspirational and space for recently released
offenders to share their experiences in
hopes of helping others.
Without help, former inmates can
revert back to bad practices, Brumfield
said. Many former inmates leave prison
without a job or a place to stay.
Brumfield also recently started volunteering one day a week to meet with exinmates immediately after their release.
She provides them with care packages
filled with items such as grocery store
gift cards, bus passes and notes to help
with the transition.
“Before they hit that door, we remind
them why they don’t want to come

back, and we offer them hope that
somebody cares,” Brumfield said.
RISE is currently available in jails in
areas including Hamilton County in
southwestern Ohio and Kenton County
in northern Kentucky.
Brumfield says she eventually hopes
to expand the newspaper’s circulation
to other jails. She also wants to expand
her volunteer program from one day a
week to several days a week.
“Individuals will kind of, you know,
go straight back to what they know, so
we’re hoping this is a little bit of a disruption,” Brumfield said.

HARTVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a 17-year-old boy riding as a

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office

Hartville teen was flown to an Akron

Activist protest
shuts down street
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A protest
against U.S. immigration policy and
recent deportations temporarily shut
down a street in Ohio’s capital, resulting in 12 arrests.
Protesters blocked the street across

The protest happened near a downtown office building housing the local

‘Dead Body Guy’ to
wrap up acting career

Capital Gazette staffer Rebecca Smith was
sweet and quiet, a good person with a beautiful
smile. Editor Gerald Fischman, friends said, was
a shy but gifted writer who expressed his brilliant
intellect through his editorials.
Both victims of the June 28 newsroom shooting
that killed five people in Maryland’s capital were
remembered Sunday for how they lived, not how
they died.
Grieving relatives and colleagues also attended
memorial services recently for community reporter and editor Wendi Winters and assistant editor
and columnist Rob Hiaasen. A service for sports
reporter John McNamara is scheduled for Tuesday
on the University of Maryland’s campus.
Smith, 34, had joined The Capital as an advertising sales assistant in November.
“Smart, beautiful, talented, everything you want
in a daughter,” Smith’s mother, Beth Rittenour, of
Warren, Ohio, said through tears after the visitation in Dundalk, where Smith had lived. After she
was born, Rittenour recalled, “I showed her to
everybody. She was beautiful. My beautiful baby.”
Smith acted in community theater during middle school, her cousin, Tammy Kaskel, told The
Baltimore Sun.
“She had such a great voice, was very supportive, and wanted to see others succeed,” Kaskel
said.
Smith would always accompany her fiance,
Dewayne Poling Jr., on trips he took to play softball, including visits to North Carolina, South
Carolina and Florida. Over the weekend, Poling’s
team, Beast Mode, organized a benefit softball
tournament in her memory, the Carroll County
Times reported.
The team also showed up at Poling’s house in
T-shirts with Smith’s nickname, Becca, printed on
the back, according to a Facebook post.
“I literally broke down in tears,” Poling wrote.
“Happy tears. Tears because through this crazy
time I have my blood family who have done
EVERYTHING to make this horrible time a little
easier, I also have my softball family. This … This
is why Rebecca Smith and I were so into this
game. For this family. We miss you baby, and even
though this is the toughest time in my life … I am
surrounded by the people we loved.”
On Facebook, Smith had called Poling her “softball fiance,” and called his daughter from an earlier relationship “the best kid ever.”

Ohio’s contested
voter purge stemmed
from a requirement in
federal law that states
must make an effort to
keep their voter rolls in
good shape by removing
people who have moved
or died.
But Ohio pursued its
goal more aggressively
than most other states,
relying on two things:
voter inactivity over
six years encompassing
three federal elections;
and the failure to return
a card, sent after the
first missed election
cycle, asking people to
confirm that they have
not moved and continue
to be eligible to vote.

and exercise that right,”
Rossi said. “What this
does is give people
more opportunities to
remain on the voter

voting.”
Husted, a candidate
for lieutenant governor,
had already instructed
boards not to cancel
any registrations before
November’s election.
However, a process that
flags inactive voters for
future removal is resuming. It has been carried
out by both Democratic
and Republican secretaries of state for more
than two decades, but
the suit was not filed
until 2016.

Sagan wins Stage 2 in Tour de France

Christophe Ena | AP

Slovakia’s Peter Sagan, left, Italy’s Sonny Colbrelli, right, and France’s Arnaud
Demare sprint to the finish line Sunday to win the second stage of the Tour de
France cycling race over 182.5 kilometers (113.4 miles). Sagan won the stage.

LA ROCHE-SUR-YON,
France (AP) — A year after
leaving the Tour de France in
disgrace, Peter Sagan earned
the race’s yellow jersey on Sunday after doing what he does
best: Powering past the competition to reach the finish line.
The three-time defending
world champion took the overall lead of the Tour on Sunday
after he bettered about a dozen
other sprinters to win Stage 2.
The Slovakian rider’s ninth
career win at the Tour came
just over a year since he was
disqualified from cycling’s most
prestigious event by race officials who ruled he had caused
a crash that broke Mark Cavendish’s shoulder.
Sagan, however, said there
was no revenge factor in mind,

and that just wearing yellow
was reason enough to celebrate.
“Revenge? I already forgot
about last year,” Sagan said.
“I’m just happy I can be in the
Tour de France, the biggest
race in the world.”
Defending champion Chris
Froome, who fell into a ditch
near the end of Saturday’s
Stage 1, arrived safely with
most of the peloton.
Sagan came up short in the
opening stage’s sprint when
he crossed second behind Fernando Gaviria, who won on his
Tour debut. And the second
stage looked like it would feature another duel between the
veteran Sagan and new star
Gaviria.
But Gaviria was involved in
a group pileup inside the three-

kilometer zone that neutralizes
the impact of accidents and
could do nothing to stop Sagan
from claiming a six-second
overall lead.
“We expected some crashes
in this tricky final and
moved up early,” said Enrico
Poitschke, sports director of
Sagan’s Bora-Hansgrohe team.
“This proved to be important
as we were able to avoid the
last crash. Everything turned
out perfect.”
Sagan moved to the front
of the small bunch hunting
for position, reaching a speed
of 57.6 kph on the final 500
meters on his way to the
finish line. With Sonny Colbrelli about to catch him, Sagan

Kevin Na wins by
5 shots in W.Va
for 2nd tour win
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP)
— Kevin Na rode a hot putter to halt a winless
streak of nearly seven years on the PGA Tour.
Na shot a 6-under-64 for a five-stroke victory
at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier on Sunday.
The 34-year-old Na’s only previous tour win
came in Las Vegas in October 2011.
“I wasn’t sure if it was going to come again. I
was hoping it would — sooner than later,” Na
said. “I’ve been close so many times, failed so
many times.”
He’s had three dozen top-10 finishes since
that last win and showed signs earlier this year
that reaching the top again was still well within
reach. He tied for second at the Genesis Open
in January, two shots behind Bubba Watson. In
late May he shot 61 in the first round of the Fort
Worth Invitational to match the course record
and finished fourth.
Starting Sunday’s round one stroke behind coleaders Harold Varner and Kelly Kraft, Na birdied six of his first 10 holes to open a big lead on
the Old White TPC, and he cruised from there.
The only blemish on his card was a bogey on the
par-4 11th after driving into the rough.
Na finished at 19-under 261 and picked up the
$1.31 million winner’s paycheck. He improved
40 spots to No. 18 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Kraft shot 70 and finished second at 14 under.
Brandt Snedeker (64) and Jason Kokrak (67)
tied for third at 13 under.
Na was one shot behind co-leaders Kraft
and Harold Varner to begin the day. His birdie
stretch included making putts of 24, 33 and 43
feet.
“My putter got hot,” Na said. “The first day
the putter felt awful, and (then) it just clicked.
Every time I got over the ball it felt great, and
everything felt like it was going in.”
By the time he strolled up to the 18th green,
Na was at ease, relaying his love to his wife and
young daughter toward a TV camera. He cried
during a television interview after the round as
he relayed a message in Korean to his overseas
fans.
“I didn’t want to leave the Korean fans out,”
Na said.
The only drama down the stretch was who
would pick up the last of the tournament’s four
qualifying spots to the British Open in two
weeks. Na had already earned a spot. Varner
needed to make a birdie putt on either No. 17 or
18 to get there, but he parred both holes. That
gave the final spot to Austin Cook.
Kraft, Kokrak and Snedeker were the other
qualifiers. The leading four players not already
exempt from the top-12 finishers qualified.
Kraft said his first British Open bid helped
take away some of the sting of losing the lead
Sunday.
“Obviously, I would have loved to win after
leading coming into today, but, you know, sometimes you run into a guy that makes a lot of
putts,” Kraft said.
No third-round leader has gone on to win the
tournament since its debut in 2010. Varner shot
72 and finished tied for fifth at 12 under along
with Cook (66), Joaquin Niemann (64), Sam
Saunders (70) and Joel Dahmen (69).
The 19-year-old Niemann already has four
top-10 finishes in eight events this season and
has secured special temporary membership on
tour.
Defending champion Xander Schauffele, who
was one shot behind when the round started,
bogeyed five of his first six holes. He shot 75
and finished 11 shots back.

Erik Jones celebrates in front of fans Saturday after winning the NASCAR Cup Series auto race at Daytona International Speedway in
Daytona Beach, Fla.

NASCAR’s Cup Series a three-car race?
DAYTONA BEACH,
Fla. (AP) — Erik Jones
created so much smoke
during his burnout that
he had trouble breathing
afterward.
His first career Cup
victory Saturday night
at Daytona International
Speedway was a needed
breath of fresh air in a
sport that has failed to
see a supposed bumper
crop of young talent
emerge as bona fide
stars.
The 22-year-old Jones
had his motorcoach
wrapped in toilet paper
as a prank and awoke to
a steady string of congratulatory tweets ranging from Kyle Busch to
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
The feel-good, firsttime win gave the sport
a vital bump as it capped
the official first half of
the season.
The question lingers: Is this a sign that
perhaps the so-called
“Young Guns” are poised
to break through over
the final 18 races, or was
this just an aberration as
Jones became the latest
benefactor to survive the
wild wrecks that litter
Daytona?
When the smoke finally cleared around Jones’
No. 20 Toyota, this much
was still clear — Busch,
Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. remained
the only three drivers
in the rarefied air of
legitimate championship
contenders.
“How many more wins
can they get, playoff
points can they get?”

asked Earnhardt, now an
NBC broadcaster. “Will
anybody get in there and
join the conversation?”
Led by five wins each
from Busch and Harvick,
the trio have combined
for 13 wins over the first
18 points races.
All three have been the
class of the field.
All three are former
Cup champions.
Can any driver stop
one from The Big 3 to
ultimately claim the
crown?
Asked if Jones’ victory
was a momentum-builder
for the next generation,
third-place finisher AJ
Allmendinger cracked,
“One of those three are
going to win next week,
so I don’t know.”
Jones, who joined
Daytona 500 champion
Austin Dillon as winners
at the track this season
who only led the final
lap, certain has the talent and team to become
a consistent winner. Joe
Gibbs Racing thought so
highly of his talent that
it gave 2004 Cup champ
Matt Kenseth the boot to
make room for Jones.
“Regardless of who I’m
replacing or where I’m
driving, you want to win
races, and you want to
be a winner,” Jones said.
“You don’t want to be
riding around.”
It only seems like 35
other drivers have been
riding around all season
trying to play catch-up
to Busch, Harvick and
Truex. But the first step
toward a title is making
the playoffs. With eight

races left before the field
is set, only eight drivers have clinched the
automatic playoff spot
earned with a win. Clint
Bowyer, Joey Logano,
Dillon, Brad Keselowski,
Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson,
Denny Hamlin, Aric
Almirola, Ryan Blaney,
Jimmie Johnson, Chase
Elliott and Alex Bowman
held the final eight spots
on Sunday — an order
sure to become jumbled
after next week’s race at
Kentucky Speedway.
You know, the track
where Truex is the
defending race winner.
So it goes, 18 up, 18
ahead.
Here’s what to watch
for in the second half of
the NASCAR season:
The big 4?
Should Busch, Harvick
and Truex advance to
the championship finale
at Homestead — and it’s
certainly no lock all three
qualify — who would
join them as the fourth
driver to race for the
title?
Bowyer has two wins
and has continued to
enjoy a career rebirth at
Stewart-Haas Racing.
SHR has dominated this
season with Harvick,
Bowyer and Kurt Busch
regular contenders and
Almirola, in his first season as Danica Patrick’s
replacement in the No.
10 Ford, has proved it
was the driver and not
the car that was the weak
link in the top team in
NASCAR.
Logano (one win) and

Hamlin (winless) have
come oh-so-close before
to winning the title, and
an Elliott championship
would link today’s fans
with the old-school loyalists who loved rooting
for his dad, “Awesome”
Bill Elliott.
Blame Chevy
Remember 2007 when
Chevrolets won 26 of 36
races?
Yeah, well, neither
does Chevy in a shortterm memory sport as
it’s mired in its worst
slump since the 1980s.
Chevrolet extended
its winless streak to 17
races, its longest since a
31-race drought in 198182. Bowman’s pole and
Dillon’s win at the Daytona 500 remain the lone
highlight of the season.
The American manufacturer replaced the
maligned Chevrolet SS
with the Camaro this
year and it hasn’t mattered. Chevy won 13
consecutive manufacturer championships in
the premier Cup Series
between 2003 and 2015.
But Toyota and Ford
have clearly closed the
gap.
It has to pain the company to see SHR zip into
a new stratosphere after
it dumped Chevy for
Ford in 2017.
Hendrick slump
Chevy’s woes are
intricately connected to
the winless season at
Hendrick Motorsports.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) — Phil
Mickelson broke the rules again, only this time he
didn’t realize it until after his violation.
Mickelson tamped down fescue grass with his foot in
front of the seventh tee Sunday at A Military Tribute at
The Greenbrier in West Virginia. He then called a twostroke penalty on himself for improving his line of play.
At the U.S. Open last month, Mickelson intentionally violated golf rules by hitting a moving ball on the
green in the third round. He later apologized, saying
his anger and frustration got the best of him.
On Sunday’s gaffe, Mickelson says he “wasn’t really
thinking.” After stepping on the grass, he paused
before he hit his tee shot, realized the mistake and
checked with a rules official, who confirmed the violation.

Minnesota Timberwolves sign
Ohio State’s Keita Bates-Diop
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have signed rookie forward Keita Bates-Diop to
an undisclosed deal.
The team announced the signing on Saturday.
Bates-Diop, from Ohio State, was drafted by the Timberwolves last month in the second round at No. 48.
Bates-Diop was the leading scorer in the Big Ten as a

fourth-year senior in 2017-18 at 19.8 points per game.
He was limited to nine games as a junior because of a
leg injury and took a redshirt for the 2016-17 season.
The 6-foot-7, 235-pound Bloomington, Illinois native
finished his college career as a 47.2 percent shooter
from the field.

Wisconsin Badgers wrestler
killed in Illinois vehicle crash
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A University of Wisconsin
wrestler was killed in a vehicle crash in Illinois, according to police and the school.
Wrestler Eli Stickley was killed Thursday night, the
university’s athletic department confirmed in a written
statement. Stickley was a native of Urbana, Ohio, and
wrestled in the 141-pound weight class at Wisconsin.
According to Illinois State Police, Stickley died after
his Nissan pickup left the roadway on Interstate 74 in
Henry County.
Stickley and a passenger were taken to Illini Hospital,
where Stickley was pronounced dead, according to a
police statement. The passenger’s identity and injuries
were not immediately disclosed. Police did not have an
update on the passenger’s condition Saturday.
Stickley joined the Badgers in 2015 and had a 21-14
record last season. He was an Ohio Division II state
champion at 120 pounds in 2014 with a 50-3 record.
Stickley’s uncle is U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican who won two national championships at Wisconsin
in the mid-1980s.
