Juveniles suspected
in connection
with house fire
Staff Report

SYRACUSE — Three juveniles have been identified by law enforcement as suspects in the Tuesday fire at an abandoned house in Syracuse.
In a release on the department’s Facebook page
on Thursday, Syracuse Chief of Police Mony Wood
and Syracuse Mayor Eric Cunningham announced
that Sergeant Michael Oliver from the Village of
Syracuse Police Department, The Meigs County
Sheriff’s Office, with assistance of State of Ohio
Fire Marshal’s Office identified suspects involved
in a suspicious fire on Aug. 21.
Suspects in the suspicious fire were three juveniles of Syracuse, Ohio. The juveniles names will
not be released, according to the statement.
On Aug. 21 at 3:43 p.m., the Syracuse, Racine
and Pomeroy Fire Departments was alerted to
Water Street in Syracuse for a working structure
fire.
Sgt. Michael Oliver with the help of witnesses
on scene was able to gather information that the
fire was suspicious in nature. The Syracuse Fire
Chief notified the Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office of
the suspicious fire. Sgt. Oliver along with the Fire
Marshal’s Office Investigator interviewed and
identified the suspects.
The information in this case will be given to
Meigs County Prosecutor James K. Stanley for
review. The Syracuse Police Department was
assisted by Meigs County Sheriff Keith Wood,
Meigs County EMS and the Racine Police Department.
Chief Wood thanked Sgt. Michael Oliver for his
work in this case and also Syracuse Fire Chief Bill
Roush, Meigs County Sheriff Keith Wood, Deputy
Leggett, The State of Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office,
and all that assisted the village of Syracuse.

After traditional competitions earlier during fair week, Horse Show youth took part in the Jr. Fair Horse Fun Show which featured a
variety of competitions. Fun show participants made pool noodle stick horses for part of the competition. The youth are pictured taking
a practice ride on their “horses” before the egg and spoon race. In the ribbon race, Lydia Edwards and Sarah Williams paired up. For the
race, participants had to ride side-by-side down the arena, around the barrel, and back while each holding one end of the ribbon. The
goal is to make it down and back without breaking the ribbon. Other competitions included egg and spoon race with a real horse, musical
hula hoops (like musical chairs, but on horses), flag race and extreme trail course. Following the competitions, Darlene Hayes and family
provided lunch for the 4-H members and their families.

Information from the Village of Syracuse Police Department.

are they who think it is right to
follow the advise of “just follow
your heart.” You cannot follow
your heart! The Bible says that
your heart is desperately wicked.
Jesus said that “out of the heart
proceeds evil thoughts, murders,
adulteries, fornications, thefts,
false witnesses, and blasphemies.”
If you ascribe to ways that seem
right to you, think again.
These are not ways in which
anyone should go, which leads us
to consider the way in which we
should go. It obviously has to do
with Jesus Christ, who said, “I am
the way…”
A missionary once told about
hiring a guide to get to an isolated
group of African people. After
hours of enduring thick brush and
sharp twigs, the exasperated missionary asked, “Are you sure you
know the way?”
The guide pulled up his shirt,
revealing a torso full of scars
received from the rips and tears
of going through jungle territory,
and said, “I not only know the
way, but I am the way!”
If we want to get through life
the best way, and if we want to
get to eternity the true way, then
we need to follow The Way, Jesus
Christ. The scars of Crucifixion

(ESV)
It is a historical fact,
and the books of Ezra,
Nehemiah and Esther all
speak to this fact within
the Bible, that when
the 70 years of captivity came to an end, not
all of the Jews returned
back to Judah and Jerusalem. Many more were
content to remain where
they were. But God was
speaking to this, when
He told them that in
order for them to return,
they would first need to
be seeking for God with
all their heart. Those
that returned were the
ones desiring spiritual
prosperity more than
they desired the physical
prosperity they might
have already found in
their new homes.
God’s promises of
blessing His people were
always so conditioned.
Many hundreds of
years before, God had
told the Israelites,
through Moses “Now
therefore, if you will
indeed obey my voice
and keep my covenant,
you shall be my treasured possession among
all peoples, for all the
earth is mine.” (Exodus
19:5; ESV) If they wanted God to treasure them,
protect them, guide

them and care for them,
then it was necessary for
them to seek God with
all their heart, and obey
the things He told them
to do.
It is interesting, that
while there are many
who want to take Jeremiah 29:11 and apply
it to themselves, even
though, in context the
specific plans God has
in mind were long ago
fulfilled, there seem to
be far fewer who want to
take Jeremiah 49:12-13
and apply it to themselves. This in spite of
the fact that it is verses
12 and 13 which are
most clearly echoed in
the New Testament, and
in spite of the fact that
the promise of verse 11
is hinged upon properly
understanding the conditions of the next two
verses.
It was Jesus who
applied these principles
to His disciples, teaching
them in the Sermon in
the Mount. He taught,
“Ask, and it will be given
to you; seek, and you
will find; knock, and it
will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks
receives, and the one
who seeks finds, and to
the one who knocks it
will be opened.” (Matthew 7: 7-8; ESV)

ing about Himself
and do activities
in the synagogue
you haven’t done
before. Think about learn- in the city of Capernaum,
ing to read or doing math and the Bible says that
many of His followers
at first or learning to
play a sport or the piano. didn’t really understand
what Jesus was trying to
Those were new experiexplain to them. John 6,
ences that took some
time to understand and to verse 60 says, “On hear-

ing it, many of His followers said, ‘This is a hard
teaching. Who can accept
it?” Many of them started
“grumbling” about what
Jesus said, the Bible tells
us. Then in verse 66, we
read, “From this time,
many of His followers
turned back and no longer followed Him.”
Wow! Some of the followers got so upset and
confused about Jesus’
words that they quit –
just gave up – and left. I
know sometimes when
new things seem so difficult, it’s easy to get
discouraged and want to

quit. But that’s not the
best way of handling it.
These people lost out on
learning what Jesus was
teaching and were not
just lost for the moment
in what they didn’t understand, but lost forever.
They had seen Jesus’
miracles and heard His
preaching for a long time
now, so they should have
given His words a chance
to help them understand
who He really was and
what He was actually trying to do for them. They
gave up way too early and
easily.
As this school year

progresses, there will be
times when the work is
hard, and you may not
understand it at first.
Be patient with yourself
when you just don’t “get”
that new idea or concept.
Ask for help, practice,
and give it a little time to
“sink into” that wonderful
brain God has given each
one of you! Pray that God
will help you learn what
you need to learn this
year. Have a wonderful
school year and enjoy the
learning of new things!
Remember: don’t give up
on yourself! God never
gives up on you!

Let’s say our prayer.
Father God, help us all
to have a great school
year and learn many new
things that will help us
be better people. Help us
also to learn many new
things about You and
what it means to be a
Christian too. Help us not
to give up when the going
gets tough. Be with us as
we go to school. Bless our
teachers, school staff, and
friends always. In Jesus’
name we pray. Amen.
Ann Moody is pastor of Wilkesville
First Presbyterian Church and

during an Aug. 20 TVC Ohio golf match held at Franklin Valley Golf Course
in Jackson, Ohio.

GLOUSTER, Ohio — A
leader has emerged over the last
three days.
Athens picked up its second
consecutive victory in a 48-hour
span with a four-shot victory
over the field Wednesday in the
third Tri-Valley Conference Ohio
Division golf match held at Forest Hills Golf Course in Athens
County.
The Bulldogs — who defeated
the field by 15 strokes on Monday at Franklin Valley Golf
Course in Jackson — continued
their momentum into Wednesday’s round by posting three of

the top eight individual scores
en route to a winning tally of
171.
Meigs, for a second consecutive round, finished second
overall after ending the day four
shots back with a 175. Alexander was also third for a second
straight match with a final score
of 180.
Vinton County was fourth
overall with a 193, while
Wellston was fifth with a final
tally of 207. Nelsonville-York had
only two golfers compete and,
therefore, did not have a team
score.
Athens is now 14-1 through
three of the seven league matches and currently owns a three-

win advantage over both the
Marauders and the Spartans (114). The Vikings sit fourth at 6-9,
while the Golden Rockets (3-12)
and Buckeyes (0-15) round out
the final two spots in the season
standings.
Meigs senior Wyatt Nicholson joined Wellston’s Hunter
Cardwell in earning co-medalist
honors with identical rounds of
1-over par 38.
Cole Arnott followed Nicholson for MHS with a 45, while
Bobby Musser and Dawson

Ohio State
suspends Meyer
for 3 games
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Urban Meyer was
suspended by Ohio State on Wednesday for the
first three games of the season for mishandling
domestic violence accusations, punishing one of
the sport’s most prominent leaders for keeping
an assistant on staff for several years after that
coach’s wife accused him of abuse.
The move followed a two-week investigation
into how Meyer reacted to allegations that former
Buckeyes assistant Zach Smith abused his ex-wife,
Courtney Smith. Zach Smith was fired last month
after she asked a judge for a protective order.
Courtney Smith alleged her husband shoved her
against a wall and put his hands around her neck
in 2015. Zach Smith has never been criminally
charged with domestic violence. The university
put Meyer on paid leave and began its investigation after Courtney Smith spoke out publicly, sharing text messages and photos she traded in 2015
with Meyer’s wife, Shelley Meyer. Shelley Meyer
is a registered nurse and instructor at Ohio State.
“I followed my heart and not my head,” Meyer
said, quickly reading a written statement to
reporters during a news conference after his punishment was announced. “I should have demanded
more from him and recognized red flags.”
Trustees discussed the decision to punish Meyer
in a marathon meeting of more than 12 hours
Wednesday while Meyer waited in the building.
Athletic director Gene Smith — who is not related
to Zach or Courtney Smith — was also suspended
without pay from Aug. 31 through Sept. 16.
Ohio State’s investigation concluded Meyer and
the athletic director mismanaged Zach Smith’s
misconduct and kept him even though he was not

an appropriate role
model for OSU studentathletes. The review
found neither Meyer nor
Gene Smith condoned or
covered up the alleged
actions by the wide
receivers coach.
Investigators found
that Meyer and the athletic director failed to
report the claims against
the coach and seemed
to misunderstand their
obligation to tell compliance officials about
alleged misconduct.
Both the athletic
director and Meyer
apologized and said they
accepted the punishments, though Meyer
said repeatedly that he
did not fully know what
was happening with the
Smiths.
“I should have been
aware of it,” Meyer said.
Meyer said he was
not aware of the text
messages Courtney
Smith sent to his wife.
When asked if he had a
message for Courtney
Smith, Meyer said:
“I have a message for
everyone involved in
this: I’m sorry we’re in
this situation.”
Meyer will miss Ohio
State’s first three games
against Oregon State,
Rutgers and No. 16
TCU, though he will be
allowed to coach practices leading into the
Rutgers and TCU games.

Ohio State university board of trustees members Alex Shumate,
right, and Janice Bonsu enter a meeting of the trustees to
discuss the future of NCAA college football coach Urban Meyer in
Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday. The board suspended Meyer for
three games for mishandling domestic violence accusations by
keeping an assistant on staff for several years after the coach’s
wife accused him of abuse.

Meyer insisted as the
investigation began he
followed proper protocols after learning of the
2015 accusations. But
he also acknowledged
lying to reporters a week
earlier when he said he
hadn’t heard of the incident until shortly before
he fired Zach Smith.
Zach Smith’s attorney
Brad Koffel said in a
statement to USA Today
that Meyer, Ohio State
and Gene Smith were
“collateral damage” for
Courtney Smith’s desire
to seek revenge her exhusband.
“Zach Smith married
a woman he should not
have married,” Koffel
said.
Zach Smith is the
grandson of late Ohio
State coach and Meyer
mentor Earle Bruce. He

has a charge of criminal
trespass pending, and
the Smiths are due in
court next month for a
hearing on a restraining
order Courtney Smith
was granted July 20.
Meyer said his loyalty
to Bruce “likely impacted” how he treated Zach
Smith over the years.
“I gave Zach Smith the
benefit of the doubt,”
Meyer said.
Mary Jo White, the
former federal prosecutor, led the investigation. She said more than
40 witnesses were interviewed, some several
times, and more than
60,000 electronic documents were reviewed.
Investigators reviewed
10,000 text messages of
Meyer’s and text messages and photos provided by Courtney Smith.
