To combat Influenza
in the surrounding communities, Holzer is hosting multiple drive-thru
community vaccination
clinics at several of its
locations.
According to a press
release from Holzer
Health System, influenza (“the flu”) is an
infection that affects
the respiratory tract.
The flu can have serious
complications and even
be fatal for some, including older adults, young
children, and people
with certain chronic
conditions. As stated by
the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention
(CDC), getting a flu
vaccine is an essential
part of protecting you

and your family’s health,
especially during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Holzer joins the CDC in
encouraging our communities to receive the
flu vaccination to keep
yourself and your family
members as healthy as
possible this fall/winter.
Holzer Athens kicked

Sedition charge may apply to protest violence
By Michael Balsamo, Alanna
Durkin Richer
and Colleen Long
Associated Press

WASHINGTON — In
a private call with federal prosecutors across the
country, Attorney General
William Barr’s message was
clear: Aggressively go after
demonstrators who cause
violence.
Following up with a
memo Thursday obtained
by The Associated Press,
Justice officials “re-emphasized” that prosecutors
should even consider bringing rarely used sedition
charges for some unrest
cases. The statute could
“potentially apply to some
of the violent acts that have
occurred.”
Barr is pushing his U.S.
attorneys to bring federal
charges whenever they can,
keeping a grip on cases
even if a defendant could be
tried instead in state court,
according to officials with
knowledge of last week’s
call who were not authorized to publicly discuss the
matter and spoke on condition of anonymity. Federal
convictions often result in
longer prison sentences.

Attorney General William Barr participates in a roll call with police
officers from the Kansas City Police Department in Kansas City, Mo.,
in August. In a private conference call this week with his U.S. attorneys
nationwide, Barr said he wanted prosecutors to be aggressive in
charging demonstrators who cause violence.

The Trump administration’s crackdown has already
led to more than 300 arrests
on federal crimes in the
protests since the death
of George Floyd. An AP
analysis of the data shows
that while many people are
accused of violent crimes
such as arson for hurling
Molotov cocktails and burning police cars and assault
for injuring law enforcement, others are not. That’s
led to criticism that at least
some arrests are a political-

ly motivated effort to stymie
demonstrations.
“The speed at which this
whole thing was moved
from state court to federal court is stunning and
unbelievable,” said Charles
Sunwabe, who represents
an Erie, Pennsylvania, man
accused of lighting a fire at
a coffee shop after a May 30
protest. “It’s an attempt to
intimidate these demonstrators and to silence them,”
he said.
Some cases are viewed as

trumped up and should not
be in federal court, lawyers
say, including a teenager
accused of civil disorder for
claiming online “we are not
each other’s enemy, only
enemy is 12,” a reference to
law enforcement.
The administration has
seized on the demonstrations and an aggressive
federal response to showcase what President Donald
Trump says is his law-andorder prowess, claiming he
is countering rising crime
in cities run by Democrats.
Trump has derided protesters and played up the
violence around protests,
though the majority of them
are peaceful.
Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen wrote in
the Thursday memo that
the sedition statute doesn’t
require proof of a plot to
overthrow the government;
it instead could be used
when a defendant tries to
oppose the government’s
authority by force. An
example, cited in the memo:
“A group has conspired to
take a federal courthouse
or other federal property
by force,” similar to what
occurred in Portland, Oregon during clashes there.

GOD’S KIDS KORNER

Manna: God’s bread
The Bible has two parts
of the same book: the Old
Testament and the New
Testament. The Old Testament tells the story of
God’s people before Jesus
was born, and the New
Testament tells the story
of His people after Jesus
was born. God’s people
were called the Israelites.
Their first leader’s name
was Moses. The book of
Exodus tells about Moses
and the Israelites’ journey
to the Promise Land.
You see, at this period
in Bible history, the Israelites were slaves to the
Egyptians. God chose
Moses to free them from
their captivity and lead
them to the land that
God promised them as
their home. Their journey was a long and hard
one mostly through the
desert. Often, they had
little to eat and drink.

SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES

Always be
ready for
His return
A question is raised concerning the phrase,
“wars and rumors of wars,” and being ready for
the judgment day. This is a fairly common question for there are many who, whenever they begin discussing the end
of the world and judgment day,
throw out the phrase as if it were
significant, and there are quite a
few who believe that this is one of
the signs, given in the Bible, conthe return of Christ.
Jonathan cerning
In connection to this, one is
McAnulty reminded of Mark Twain’s famous
Contributing
observation, “The trouble with the
Columnist
world is not that people know too
little; it’s that they know so many
things that just aren’t so.” Certainly, when it
comes to what the Bible teaches, we should
make sure that what we are being taught is actually what the Bible says, and, concerning, “wars
and rumors of wars,” what a lot of people know
to be so, it just isn’t.
Jesus did use the phrase (cf. Matthew 24:6),
but as we look at the text, we should notice a
couple of significant things.
The first thing to notice is that the context
of the quote is not concerning the end of the
world, but rather Jesus is discussing the coming
destruction of Jerusalem (cf. Matthew 24:1-2).
What Jesus was addressing was the politics of a
particular region. Hence, the admonition from
Jesus, in the same setting, advising His followers in Judea to flee the country when the signs
He gave came to pass (cf. Matthew 24:16).
Relatedly, a point to make about the usefulness of “wars and rumors of wars,” as a sign of
anything, is that it will only have value in a specific region or locale. World-wide, as a sign, it is
about as useful as noting that the sun came up
in the morning. Every year there is fighting and
war going on somewhere in the world. This has
been going on for a long, long time; nor should
we imagine that the wars of today are somehow
more significant than the wars of yesteryear.
This brings us to the second thing we should
note about the phrase, as Jesus uses it: namely,
Jesus actually told His apostles that wars and
rumors of wars was not a sign of much significance. Specifically, He said, “And you will hear
of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are
not alarmed, for this must take place, but the
end is not yet (Matthew 24:6; ESV).” Again, the
“end” in question was the end of Jerusalem and
the Temple in Jerusalem, but even in that limited regard, Jesus said that such a sign was no
cause for panic. If it was not cause for alarm in
the first century, it remains no cause for alarm
yet today, at least when it comes to trying to
interpret the significance of unfolding historical
events.
Jesus said, regarding His ultimate judgment
upon the world, “But concerning that day and
hour no one knows, (Matthew 24:36a)” and
then, “Therefore, stay awake, for you do not
know on what day your Lord is coming (Matthew 24:42).”
Some few years later, writing to the Thessalonians, the apostle Paul echoed the words of
Christ, as recorded in Matthew. He said, concerning the return of Christ, “Now concerning
the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no
need to have anything written to you. For you
yourselves are fully aware that the day of the
Lord will come like a thief in the night. (1 Thessalonians 5:1-2; ESV)”
Paul goes on to say, “But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like
a thief. For you are all children of light, children
of the day. We are not of the night or of the
darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do,
but let us keep awake and be sober. For those
who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get
drunk, are drunk at night. But since we belong
to the day, let us be sober, having put on the
breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet
the hope of salvation. (1 Thessalonians 5:4-8;
ESV)
Paul likens the Christian life to that of guard
duty. The guard cannot be found asleep, he cannot be drunk, or engaged in other such behaviors. He needs to be alert at all times, serious
and focused, and engaged in the duties of his
commission. So too with the saints of God. We
must eschew those things that would distract
us, remaining alert and spiritually ready at
all times to carry out our duties. We must be
dressed for action, as Paul states, with salvation
that comes through Christ, and with faith, love
and hope.
That was almost 2000 years ago, and Paul
wanted the Christians of that day and age to
be alert, always prepared for Christ’s return.
Men who today search for signs of His return
are missing the point. Christians in every place
and at all times are to live always ready, unconcerned about signs, knowing that whether it
be today or tomorrow – it makes no difference
regarding what is expected of us.
The church of Christ invites you to worship
and study with us at 234 Chapel Drive, Gallipolis, Ohio. If you have any questions or comments
of your own, feel free to share them with us.
Jonathan McAnulty is minister of Chapel Hill Church of Christ.

Belpre completes
TVC Hocking
season with win
By Bryan Walters

POMEROY, Ohio — There were no winners
in this battle for second place, but the Tornadoes
certainly have to feel like they got the better of the
fight.
The Belpre golf team won its fifth match in
six tries and completed its Tri-Valley Conference
Hocking Division championship with a 29-1 overall record following an 8-stroke victory over the
field Tuesday at Meigs Golf Course.
The Golden Eagles — who had already clinched
the TVC Hocking title outright after the fifth of
six matches — posted four of the top 10 individual
scores en route to a winning mark of 165.
Southern — which entered the day one loss
behind Federal Hocking for second place in the
seasonal standings — ended up tying the Lancers
in the 4-man scoring, which led to a tiebreaker to
break the matching rounds of 173.
Aaron Vance of SHS fired a 51, while Andrew
Airhart carded a 57 for Federal Hocking — giving the Purple and Gold the nod for the runner-up
spot.
That victory allowed Southern and FHHS to
finish the season standings with a share of second place with identical 21-9 overall records.
Waterford (13-17) placed fourth with a 174,
while Trimble (3-27) was fifth with a 222. Eastern (3-27) had only three competitors and did
not record a team score, therefore placing the
Eagles sixth.
Mitchell Roush won medalist honors with a
2-over par round of 36. Conner Copeland of
BHS was the overall runner-up with a 37.
Ryan Laudermilt paced Southern with a 40,
followed by Tanner Lisle and Jacob Milliron
with respective efforts of 41 and 42. David
Shaver completed the team score with a 50,
while Lance Stewart also added a 55 for the
Tornadoes.
Ethan Short led EHS with a 38, followed by
Jacob Spencer with a 48 and Colton McDaniel
with a 51.
Brett Colyer led Waterford with a 41, while
Zach North and Gage Schoonover both paced
Trimble with identical efforts of 52.
Below is the list of individual scores from
each participating team.

LeBron James makes 16th All-NBA team Blue Angels breeze

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.
(AP) — LeBron James now
stands alone in All-NBA recognition history, getting there
unanimously.
James was revealed Wednesday as an All-NBA player for a
record 16th time, breaking the
mark he shared with Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant and
Tim Duncan. He was a firstteam pick on all 100 ballots,
joining Milwaukee’s Giannis
Antetokounmpo as the only
unanimous first-team selections
this season.
Joining them on the first
team: Houston guard James
Harden, Lakers forward Anthony Davis and Dallas guard Luka
Doncic, who got the nod in just
his second season in the NBA
— becoming the first player to
get there in either his first or
second season since Duncan did
for San Antonio. Duncan was
first-team in each of his first
eight NBA seasons, starting
in 1997-98 and going through
2004-05.
The 21-year-old Doncic is the

sixth player to make All-NBA
at that age or younger, joining
Kevin Durant, James, Duncan,
Rick Barry and Max Zaslofsky.
James is a first-team pick
for the 13th time in his career,
extending his record there.
Bryant and Karl Malone were
11-time first-teamers. Antetokounmpo, the reigning MVP
and the frontrunner to win the
award again this season, was
picked unanimously for the second consecutive year.
Los Angeles Clippers forward
Kawhi Leonard, Denver center
Nikola Jokic, Portland guard
Damian Lillard, Oklahoma City
guard Chris Paul and Toronto
forward Pascal Siakam were on
the second team.
The third-team picks were
Boston forward Jayson Tatum,
Miami forward Jimmy Butler,
Utah center Rudy Gobert, Philadelphia guard Ben Simmons
and Houston guard Russell
Westbrook.
Paul and Westbrook are now
nine-time All-NBA players,
Harden a six-time choice, Lil-

lard is a five-timer and Antetokounmpo, Leonard and Davis
are four-time selections. Butler
and Gobert are three-time selections, Jokic a two-time choice
and Siakam, Tatum and Simmons all joined Doncic as being
on the team for the first time.
Harden and Doncic appeared
on all 100 ballots — though
only James and Antetokounmpo
were unanimous as first-team
choices on every ballot. Davis
and Jokic were on 99 ballots,
and Leonard appeared on 98.
The voting was conducted
based on regular-season games
played through March 11,
and voters had to choose two
guards, two forwards and one
center for each team. Milwaukee forward Khris Middleton
did not make All-NBA even
though he appeared on more
ballots (60) than Simmons (43)
and Westbrook (38); they made
the team as guards. Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid got 39 votes
and did not make the team
either, after finishing fourth
among centers.

through Jesus Christ. That is not to say, we
do not stumble and say or do something we
should not have, or that we do everything
that we should do. But it IS to say that we
are not content with these mess-ups. We are
not passive about flaws in our character. We
are not quick to judge others and quick to
excuse ourselves.
On the contrary, we hold ourselves to the
pattern of the Bible, God’s Word, and actively pursue the qualities that are fitting the
Child of God since we know that the Child
of God is also the emissary of His Kingdom,
called to reflect His values, His character,
His holiness and His love and mercy.
So how are you doing with this? Have
you fallen asleep to Him and His call to be
awakened to a higher reality than this world
alone offers you? Have you been deaf to His
voice, stone-hearted toward the people He
has placed in your life to love? Have you
“fallen out of love” with God and found
yourself caught up in the passions and pursuits (and craziness) of the world around
us?
If so, then “awake, O sleeper, and rise
from the dead, and Christ will shine on you”
(Ephesians 5:14 ESV). You will find, if you
will trust Him, that as you answer His call
to
salvation, His call to follow Him, and His
call to serve others, that the cup of life He
offers you is overflowing with joy and peace
and victory. Wake up and rise.

CROSS WORDS

TOPS
discusses
weight
loss goals

The power for forgiveness
In this final look at Paul’s
letter to Philemon, I want
us to focus on verses 21
through 25. It reads, “Confident of your obedience, I
write to you, knowing that
you will do even more than
I say. At the same time,
prepare a guest room for
me, for I am hoping that
through your prayers I will
be graciously given to you.
Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends
greetings to you, and so do
Mark, Aristarchus, Demas,
and Luke, my fellow workers. The grace of the Lord
Jesus Christ be with your
spirit” (ESV).
If you’ve been with me
for the past month, you
know Paul’s request to
Philemon is that he would
forgive his slave, Onesimus. In verses 1 through
7, we see the work before
forgiveness. In verses 8
through 17, we see the call
to forgiveness. In verses
18 through 20, we see the
cost of forgiveness. And
now, we see the power for
forgiveness.
It’s easy to bypass these
verses as if they hold no
significance. After all, this
is the end of Paul’s letter,
and most of it consists of
personal greetings. But
God’s Word speaks to us—
even the passages we view

lemon’s fellowship.
By now, you’re probably
asking, “How am I supposed to do this?” Forgiveness can be a daunting
task. Obedience is difficult. Fervent prayer takes
time. And maintaining
proper fellowship among
brothers and sisters in
Christ seems impossible.
Surely Philemon feels
the same way. But Paul
isn’t done.
In the final verse of his
letter, he writes, “The
grace of the Lord Jesus
Christ be with your spirit”
(v. 25 ESV).
The grace of God
empowers us to forgive.
It is this grace which
strengthens our resolve to
obey. It is this grace which
stirs the heart in prayer.
And it is this grace which
keeps us together.
My prayer, as I bring
this Philemon series to
a close, is that we would
deeply consider who we
might need to forgive. God
doesn’t call us to forgive
without giving us the
power. And it’s called His
grace.
