Grendell and others are pushing a

Taft has indicated he would consider
ending the ta1t on trusts, but not the cigarette tax, Hicks said.
He said the 50-cent increase provides
a triple benefit: increased revenue, a
decrease in smoking rates, especially
among teens, and the potential of longterm savings in health costs.
Senate President Richard Finan said
the sunset provision was a bad idea,

: spate of potentially deadly pipe bombs

Nebraska recently once again has the
; nation worried about the safety of mail
:delivery. Last year's deadly anthrax
: attacks, coming after. the Sept. 11 terrorist
· attacks on New York City's World Trade
Center and the Pentagon, showed that mail
safety easily could be thwarted ....
· . This wave of attacks does not use the full
: postal deli very system, as the anthrax
; attacks did, but only mailboxes and those,
thus far, mostly in rural areas ....
. Federa.l authorities a~e callin~ the _P.ipe
: bombs acts of domestiC terronsm. They
: were accompanied by anti-government
: letters. Officials also believe they were all
placed by the same person or group.
. Just as happened during the anthrax
: attacks, the pipe bombs are also drawing
:imitators. Authorities discovered a fake
: device in Nebraska . and arrested an 18year-old for that stupid prank.
. Last year's anthrax attacks reminded all
: Americans to be on the alert for suspicious
:packages or items in their mail. The pipe
: bomb attacks do so yet again.

And will remain undone for the fore·

promises to plu& some of the holes in

WELLSTON - It's contagious and it
spreads through out the body ... and that's not a
bad thing. .
In this case, winning has become contagious
at Eastern High School.
·
A 1ear ago, the boys' basketball team and
girls softball team made trips to the state tournament, while the football team has been in
the playoffs for the rast two years.
.
Now, the basebal team could become the
neltt 'big' thing in Meigs County.
On Thursday, they took a big step in that
direction with a 6-1 victory over New Boston
for the Division IV, Region 15 district title.
Eastern must now wait to see who its
regional semifinal foe will be as Lancaster
Fisher Catholic and Newark Catholic play .
today in their district final at Pickerington.
The winner will play Eastern at 5 p.m. on May
31 at Lancaster's Beavers Field.
"It's a great feeling to koow that these kids
have worked so hard and when you work hard
for something, it means alot to you," said
Eastern head coach Brian Bowen. "It's a special feeling."
Eastern pitcher Charlie Young pitched a
three-hitter for the Eagles (16-4 ), strildng out
four and allowing only two walks.
"Charlie's done a great job nil year," said
Bowen. "He throws to the spots real welL He
gets guys to hit bad pitches. He's got a great
defense behind him."

Pitcher Michael Pierce couldn't provide the
antidote to the contagion for the Tigers (20-5)
as the Eagles' bats came alive.

sweetest swing in
golf, d·ead at 89
BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Sam Snead, the golfing great known as "Slammin' Sam"
who used the sweetest swing in the game to win seven
major championships and a record .81 .
PGA Tour events, died Thursday at age 89.
Snead died at his Hot Springs, Ya. , home
at 3:38 p.m., daughter-in-law Anne Snead
said. He had been suffering from a series
of strokes that began just after the Masters.
although he had be~n ill even before the ·
tournament.
He died holding hands with his son, Sam
Jr., and daughter-in-law.
Snead was raised during the Del'ression
Snead
in the backwoods of western Yirgmia and
blessed with as much raw talent as anyone
who played golf. He grew up learning the game in bare feet
with clubs made from tree hmbs, but his swing was a com·
"bination of grace and power.
Arnold Palmer, who was on two winning World Cup
teams with Snead, called him one of lhe ~realest athletes
ever. Snead was so limber that he could k1ck the top of a
door frame even when he was in his early 80s.
·
"He was a man who was very important to the popula~i",).
ty of the game," Palmer said. ''I'm so sorry these things
have to happen."
·
Snead was ageless, the only player who won sanctioned
tournaments in six decades, from the 1936 Wes1 Virginia
Closed Pro to the 1982 Legends of 'Golf. which he won
with Gardner Dickinson as his partner. ~
Snead was famous for his Straw hat, cocky grin and
homespun humor. A three-time Masters champion, Snead
had been an honorary starter since 1983. He would jaunt to
the fitsttee, show off that flowing, flawless swing and then
tell stories outs!~ the clubhouse.
