Causes o stress

..

BY la:KY IIAul
. . Stress, which is caused by a change in
• 0\lf environment, can directly affect our
health. When we are in a sudden stress·
• ful situation, hormones are excreted that
•· pi'epa.re us for "fight" or "flight." .
·, Along with this hormonal release, our
· body systems react in a variety of ways.
· The cardiovascular system responds
with a pounding, erratic or racing llean,
. cold, sweaty hands, or a throbbing
•headache. The signals or stress on the
· tespiratory system include shallow or
' unsteady breathing, shortness of bre11th,
, difficulty talking because breathing isn't
· controlled, and even asthma attacks.
Stress may trigger an upset stomach,
nausea, vomitinj;. constipation, diarrhea.
or sharp abdommal pain in the digestive
or gastronintestinal system. Arthritis,
. ·constant headaches, back, neck and
. $houlder.pain, and muscle tremors, such
as shaking hands, may materialize in the
skeletaVmuscular system. Problems of
acne, dandruff, heavy perspiration or
excessive dryness of the skin.or hair may
. pccur with the skin when we are under
. ·periods of distress. The immune system
· 'can break down, causing allergies, skin
rashes and the increased likelihood of
·.·cbtching coldund the flu.
.
• ' There can also be indirect effects of
tension and strain on the body.. During
·· ·times of stress, we tend not to take care
' · of ourselves they way we should. We
· · rnay not eat properly, get enough exer·
else or sleep, or resort to bad habits like
· · smoking more or drinking alcohol. We
·. ne~lect our health because the stressful
·.. ioc1dent takes up so much of our time

..

that we feel we must not dwell on ourselves, but instead, concentrate on
resolving the difficult situation.
Man~ components come into play to
detemune how we respond to stress.
Amon11 them are: what the stressful situation IS, how long it persists and what
may happen because of it. Personal
qualities such as our physiological state,
our motivation, how we evaluate the situation. our coping mechanisms and our
social support system can also have a
connection to our health.
Our genetic history. our lifestyle, economic and social resources, and our
health in general can contribute to how
stress affects our well-being. A genetic
pre-disposition for certain diseases only
accounts for about 20% of the probabih·
ty of contractinj; an illness dunn g.stress.
The other 80% 1s due to our environment
and personal behaviors.
Even though stress can be·positive (!
marriage or a vacation), negative stress
is the l)'pe that causes more heulth problems. Type A personalities who are com·
petitive, ambitious, impatient and driven
are more likely to have heart attacks,
especially if those people tend to be cyn·
ical and angry;
This occurs because they .mar be in II
perpet11al state of distress w1th large
amounts of hormones being excreted.
These hormones scratch the inside of the
arteries . .cholesterol. then adheres to the
scratches, clogging the arteries.
· People who are susceptible to this condition can reduce their health risks by
managing their anger. During a stressful
event, they should ask themselves if the

NATIONAL VIEW

Cut back
Museum .should reduce expenses
.from top, not bottom
' .

• Warren (Ohio) Tribune Chronicle: We hope this
is not 11 sign of the times. but the Rock and Roll Hull
of Fame arid Museum in Cleveland cut n fifth of its
: full-time stuff last week. laying off 21 employees.
: lrhe layoffs included a senior development director.
Two more senior positions ure also on the line for
budget cuts in September. The hull now has a work
force of 92 persons.
·
The reason for the layoffs is said to be o l'ack of
. national sponsors, which brought in us much us $3.2
: million in 2000.
· Attendance and revenues are up.
Terry Stewart. president and chief executive officer,
anp the museum's other five vice presidents have
. taken I0· percent pay cuts. But even with a I 0 percent
: cut, Stewart's annual salary stand's at $295,000. We
: suspect thllt is where most of the real money lies und
: that is where the real cuts must be made.
· We suggest you start with a chief executive offi. cer's salary of about $165:000. That should be
, enough for the gentleman to live quite well in
: Cleveland. Cut the other inflated directors' salaries as
: well, and perhaps you'IJ be able to start hiring some
: of the underlings back.

Commendable action
'
Dear Ms. Torres and members
of
the Melas.-County Health Board:
I am Wriffng to commend you and the
Meigs County Health Board for taking
decisive and effect! ve action to combat
the risks of second hand smoke. I urn
aware that the board's clean air regulation may huve int1uenced some constituents to vote against your levy. I am
also aware that you have had to 111)1 off
employees as 11 result of the levy not
pus sing.
Be assured that you did the right
thing, and do not ever forget this.
· Although you are facing hard times
now, by applying the courage you
demonstruted in setting u precedent for
the state, and by P.ersevering, your
health department w1ll without 11 doubt
weather this storm.
'

You assumed a known risk for the
sake offrotecting the health of all resi·
dents o Meigs County. You have succeeded, and the residenis of Meigs
County are fur better oil' as 11 result In
11asslng the. clean air re$.ulation, you
ilemonstruted your commttmentto protecting the public health. Alon$ with
Lucas County, you have set the el'.ample
for other heulth departments In Ohio.
Although some health departments
may now usc the fullure of your levy as
an excuse to n1>t pass clean air regulations, through 1your perseverunce you
will succeed. and hy doing so, will
demonstrate to the naysayers that a
health department can and should puss
such regulntions. I urn confident thot
these difficult times will only be'temporury and thut once they huve passed,
your deportment will be that much
stronger for having succeeded in the
face of adversity.
·

. Regardless of the Supreme Court's
decision, n statewide initiative Is dcfi·
nitcly culled for us eatly as next year.
Through the concerted efforts of local
coalitions, health departments, Tob11tc0
Free Ohio and the trl·qencies, this goul
Is most deHnitely attainable und reason·

statewide Initiative Is doable.
Again, congrutulations for doing the
right thing. You have set an excellent
example and protected the residents ot
your county. Their quality of life· has
undoubtedly Improved us a result. The

KONDRACKE'S VIEW

Polls paint unclear picture for congressional campaigns
WASHINGTON - An uvalanche of
new polls contained more good news
for President Bush, but mixed results
for Republicans und Democrats facing
Congressional elections In five months.
In six out of eight polls, Bush's overall job approval rating remained in the
70s - the average. was 75 percent with the populists at the Democracy
Corps showing him at 69 percent and
the ever-outlyfng Harris Poll at S I percent.
The flurry of questions ubout what he
knew about terrorist threats prior to the
Sept. II attacks produced no dent whatsoever in his overall approval or support
for his handling or terrorism, wllich
averaged 75 percent in five polls.
The questioners got confused answers
from the public about whether Bush and
U.S. intelligence agencies could have
done. more to prevent the attacks and
whether there now should be a high·
profile investigation of their behavior. ·
The May 19-20 CBS News poll
showed that by 56 percent to 36 percent
voters believe that the CIA and the FBI
should have uncovered the plot prior to
Sept. II.
· .
A full 6S percent of those polled said
that the Bush administration is "mostly
telling the truth" about what it knew
before the auucks but is "hiding somethin$."
Sttll, the CBS poll showed that 75
percent of voters approve of Bush's
handling of terrorism. The respondents,
by 62 percent to 36 percent, prefer that
Congress not hold hearings to deter·
mine what the White House knew aboui
possible attacks.
In an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll,
similarly, voters supported Bush's
opposition to a full-scale Investigation
of intelligence prior to Sept. II . By 58
percent to 36 percent, they said it would
be "unproductive and too political."
All polls questioning voters on the
subject showed that "'errorism has
