BY GlOMI R. PI.AGINZ
In John Tidyman '.s popular book,
"Cleveland Golfer's Bible'' (Gray &
Company, 2002), the author has a
chnpter titled, "Why I Love Playing
Golf with Women ."
One of the reasons he give is thai
women "rarely swear." With men
golfer.;, it's different. Over the c;our.;e
of 18 holes, they may invoke lhe name
of the deity more than n minister does
in church on a Sundny morning.
The men, however, will insist they
mean no disrespect. They will go even
further. They wlll claim lhey feel closer to God on the golf course on Sunduy
morning, while enjoying the wonderful
world of nature.
·
I have always been skeptical of such
cl¥ims.
·
Of course, it is pos ible - as
Shnkespeare said - to find "tongues
In trees, books in running brooks and
sermons in stones." But stones by
themselves do not a sermon make, nor
a hole-in-one on Sunday a Christian
make.
Still, wanting to put the golfer's
creed to the test, I decided one lovely
spring morning to skip church ana
spend the time outdoors. I wanted to
see whether it was possible to feel
closer to Ood while communing with
nature, rather than crowded in a pew.
The Bible, I reminded myself,
speaks more of woods and trees and
woodland creatures than of synagogues and churches. In the Bible, we
read of lying down in green pastures,
of still waters, of the fields exulting
and lhe woods singing for joy. The

(one barked) and went on our wny.
Wilh church hells pealing in the dis.tonce I sat down on a rock ood coole'd
my bare feet in n running stream ood
read "The Golfer's Prayer for
Forgiveness," which uepears on page
211 in "The Golfer's Btble":
"Forgive me, o Lord, if sunday
rooming finds me on the golf course
and not in church. Forgive me if I lind
You, not in prayers nnd hymns, but in
Your $reat und glorious outdoor.;. more
mngmficent than any cathedral.
.
"M;v prayers to You on Sunday
mommg may he unspoken and my
hymns to You unsun~, but my helltl
will be always pruiMng You for the
beauty of the Earth, tor S{)uciou~ skies,
for lhe~oys ofcomtadeshtp and for this
funny httle gume we play.
"Bless my driving and my putting.
Direct lhe ball into the bunker only fQr
my opponent's shots. (If to ask this is
unworthy of me. forgive me this, too.)
Amen."
It may be unrealistic to expect your
ordinary duffer to he lhinking thoughts
about nature and the universe us he
steps up to the first tee on u Sunday,
morning.
·
But if he takes a minute to pruy "The
Oolfcr's Prayer for Forgiveness''
before he leaves the clubhouse, he may
indeed find his 18-hole journey chasing an elusive little white ball across
one tiny comer of God's glorious creation to he a religious e~perience such
as he would not. find in church. Or
anywhere else.

glory of nations is compared to an
overflowing stream and peace to a
river.
So, 1 stepped out of n world of stone
and usphnlt and uutomobile emissions
into a world of trees and wildtlower.;
and babbling brooks. The contrast gets
.one 10 realize that we spend most of
our lives not in · the world of God's
making, but in one of our own making
that has all the ambience of a trashburning plant.
In his book "The End of Nature"
(Alfred A. Knopf, ' 1990), Bill
McKibbin states that we may soon be
looking for unswers in the great god,
Dacron, as opposed to finding faith in
the God that has been our spiritual
leader for thousands of . years. In a
. world of Astroturf, he writes, there
m~y still be work for Ood to do, but He
wtll be unable to speak to us lhrough
nature.
·
I passed only three people and an
Irish setter on my walk. They all
looked as happy as I to btl out on such
n beautiful morning. We said hello

Lieber.

with a drive beyond Sosa s reach in right-center

For those who live under rocks. 2002
marts the 30th anniversary of the ruling
which mandates equality in programs which
are awarded government moneys, and like
many other noble ideas. Title IX had its
hean in the right place.
With the opportunities for women being
fewer than those for men, Title IX proponents hoped to level the playing field. but
· after three decades, tlle topic 1s one that still
starts heated discussions,
Is the playing field becoming more level '
Yes.
,
Is die situation for all athletes gelling b.!tter'1 Definitely no.
·
In order to gauge compliance with the policy. the Department of Health, Education
and Wei fare established this three-pronged
test in 1979 to measure whether or not a .
school is following the guidelines:
I. Demonstrate thai rl!e pen:entagt' of its
female arlr/eres is 11ear(1· rile same as r!re

Part of the problem is that it is easier to
level the field in NCAA Divi sion 1 (where it
is reported that only 5 percent of athletic
programs tum a profit) by culling non-revenue sports like wrestling. gymnastics, and
track and field than to add more sports for
women.
Many, including the National Wrestling
Coaches Association have cried foul, espe,
cially in light of the third gu ideline. claiming that it only addresses female athletes,
expressly ignoring the interests and abilities
of its male students.
