DETROIT (AP) - The last time a Detroit
Tigers pitcher had this kind of major league

Andy Van Hekken pitched an eight-hit
shutout in u 4-0 victory over the Cleveland
Indians on TUesday night. He sent' Detroit to
its tirst victory in si~ gumes us the Tigers
ended u nine-game losing streuk ut home. 1
"It wus awesome:· said Dave Van Hekken.
the pitcher's father. "I never thought he'd go
nine innings of shutout ball."
He is the first American League pitcher to
make his debut with a shutoot since Oakland's
Mike Norris in 1975. He is 1he first Ti~ers
pitcher to accomplish the feat smce
Schoolboy Rowe blanked the Chicago White
So~ 3-0 in 1933. according to the Elias Sports

· Duve und Lynn Van Hekken were' purt of a
contingent of 35 family .members nod more
than 65 friends thut made the trip from
Hollund, Mich. The 23-year-old len-hunder is
accustomed to hometown support.
He pitched the 2000 season for the Single-A
West Michigun Whitecaps in the Grand
Rupids area. Before being promoted to the
Tieers on Monday, Van llekkeil was with
Tnple-A Toledo, about 70 miles from Detroit.
"They've always been there,'' Van Hekken
sui d.
The crowd at Comerica Park influenced
Tigers munuger Luis Pujols, who sllid before
,the gume that Van Hekken would be limited to
IOU pitches. He wound up throwing liS. 73
for strikes.
·
"Those people were going to shoot me if I
took him out," said Pujols, who could not
ignore the prospect of a shutout.
"I'm sorry I lied. He went 15 pitches over
the limit," he suid. "But the chance to pitch u
complete-gume shutout in your major league

debut. ... I'll muke up the IS pitches some·
where, somehow.'' .
Van Hekken wasn't nervous.
"The first batter that §Ot in there, it wus just
·a bullgume.'' he suid. ·Just kept doing what
I've been doing."
Van Hekken struck out one und wulked two.
He won nil live of his decisions ut Toledo.
Last season he won all five of his decisions for
Pujols at Double-A Erie.
'When you're 11 winner. you're a winner.''
Pujols said. "1 haven't seen him lose yet."
Van Hekken hit his spots and changed
speeds.
·
"He threw a fustbull on the outside comer,"
Cleveland munuger Joel Skinner sui d. "He just
kind of moved everything around."

striking out five in his first stnrt since Oct. 2.
He was acquired from Los Angeles on July
28.
Detroit took u 2-0 lead in the second on
Craig Paquette's double to right-center and a
double-play grounder by Ramon Santiago.
The Tigers added a run on Roben Pick's
RBI triple in the third, and made it 4-0 in the '
fourth when third baseman Grea LaRocca's
throwing error allowed Paquette to score after
an infield single by Hiram Bocachica.
Cleveland threatened in the second and
si~th. but Van Hekken got double plays to
escape. finishing off a 3-6-l double play in the
sixth.
·
With two out and runners on first and third
in the seventh, Van Hekken got John
McDonald to bounce out to second to end the
inning,
·
"A couple of times, he got into jams." Pujols
said. "But, same us last year, he made the
pitch to get out of it."
