Ajax are behind them, the men who served aboard the repair ship will always remember the camararderie of their years aboard. That's why they continue to reunite every year. P.O. Sigman of Middleport, and his wife, Sue, took their turn at hosting a nationwide reunion of the AjM's Korean Conflict-era crew over the weekend, and showed them a taste of Meigs Cou(\IY. , It ·Was the 15th year for the Ajax crew's reunion. Fifty' Y!'ars after working on the "floating city," which carried all the sup· plies and crew needed to repair naval ships damaged during the war, crew members continue to join together in communities all across the country. . · ·"We looked after each other, and protected each other, so we're more or less like brothers," Sigman said about his crew mates. "We used to lh:e together, three bunks high, and that makes you close." That closeness hasn't passed through the years, thanks in part to annual reunions. This year, the men and .their wives enjoyed a hayride at Bob Evans Farm in Rio .Grande, and shared a Saturday luncheon at the Feeney-Bennett American Legion Post annex in Middleport, where the Rockin' Country Cloggers performed. . . At Monday evening's regular meeting of Middleport VIllage Council, Mary Wise outlined plans the project, beginning with construction of a new roof on the historic train station. The station. located in Diles Park. was built at the tum of the last centt1ry by the Hocking Valley Railroad, Wise said. It was used until 1953, and was given to the village in the mid 1980s. Gavin station, will remain at standard leveL · But that standard has changed since 9/11, and security procedures instituted in the wake of the attack maintain that new awareness, an AEP spokesman said. "We did take steps at our plants following the attack," said Pat Hemlepp, the utility's director of corporate media relations. "We won't discuss specifics · of those steps because it will compromise our security." Hemlepp said the question of AEP's security has arisen in the media as the 9/ll anniversary nears, but again' stressed that the company cannot openly discuss its procedures tu keep the pl ants secure. AEP owns all or part of 89 electric generating plants in seven states, making it the largest such generator in North America. Gavin is situated on the Ohio River; while the John Amos plant, the biggest coalburning facility AEP owns in its system, is on the Kanawha River near St. Albans. W.Va. In the days following the attacks, concerns were raised about the plants' vulnerubi lil y to terror attacks or sabotage, but the utility responded immediately with heightened security. Hemlepp said security at all of 'its facilities is reviewell and updated as needed. He said that when the onerear anniversary of the attack ts observed Wednesday, security at Gavin and other plants will be the same, and 9/11 will not carry additional sig· nificance.
