CARROLLTON (AP) Ann and Tom Roberts hud
tri~'d for years to adopt chi!dren through the foster care
system to raise in their log
·home in rural Carroll
County.
. Five sisters from Lorain,
who were separated for
years in foster cure. wanted
to live together with parents
who loved them.
Both dreams came true at
h
t e same time that the
Robertses won part of a $75
million Super Lotto Plus
jackpot. Tom had pitched in
with co-workers at Hoover
Co. in North Canton for tickets in the druwing, and his
share came to about
$360,000 after tuxes.
The lottery win seemed to
celebrate the adoption of the
five sisters _ Ashley. 15;
Brittney, 13; Kuyla, II:
·Stephunie, s. und Ltndsey. 2
- who had been living with
them for the last 1 112 years.
Just nine days after Tom
won the lottery, the sisters
officially bccume part of the
family, which includes 17year-old foster son Dustin.
7-year-old adopted daughter
Bridget and Ann's 20-year·
old
natural
daughter
Colleen:
It was a dream come true,
especially for the four older
sisters, who along with their
brother Ryan, were removed
from their home in 1998.
, When police arrived, they
found a house that was lit· ·
tered with garbage. rollin~
food and cat feces. The girls
mother, Sherri Yost, and
Brett Scott, the father of four
of the children, slept' amid
garbage on the living room
floor.
·
Lorain County Children's
Services took c~stody of the

children nnd divided them
between two foster homes.
In Murch 1998. 2-year-old
Ryun died in foster care. In
January 2000. Yost gave
birth to Lindsey, who wns
placed in foster . care six
months later.
It wus not until October
2000 that the sisters were
placed through a private
udoption agency wuh the
Robe rtses.
By that time. more than 20
foster children had been
through the couple's home.
They had adopted Bridget
and held onto Dustin. but
they wanted a bigger family.
And Alln, who had been
murried previously, could
not have children.
· In 1999, the Robertses'
relntionship with Stark
County Children Services
becume struined. Four foster
sisters ·were removed from
the home after a 3-year-old
got scratched under the eye,
and a former foster child
accused Ann of sexual
abuse, though she was later
exonerated.
Ann and Tom hoped the
five sisters could stay but the
family's economic situation
wus precarious, despite the
$500 a month they received
from the county for each fos·
ter child.
But the wfnning lottery
ticket changed everything.
With the extra money; the
IO·member family can buy a
new pickup truck, stan col·
lege funds for the older sirls,
fix up the house and buy a
time·•hare condo near
Orlando, Fla., so they can
take annual vacations to
Disney
World.,
The
(Cicvelund) Plain Dealer
reported.

Managing Editor

DEAR ABBY: ''Fearl'ul in
California," the mother of a
newlywed young woman,
wrote that her son-in-law,
"Doug," was a nice guy, but
verbally abusive when he
drank. She said the next day
Doug would conveniently
"forget" what he had said or
how badly he had ·behaved.
The daughter was frightened
by her new husband's threats
when he was drunk and feured
that one day he'd carry them
out. "Fearful" asked if you
thou~ht she should lalk to her
son-m-law and suggest he get
help.
You ad vised her to stay ont
of it and that the daughter had
to be the one to draw the line.
You also said the daughter
should join Al-Anon.
Abby. domestic abuse is not
merely caused by alcohol. It's
an issue of control. Domestic
abuse thrives in solitude. That
son-in-law needs to be made
aware that his in-laws are
watching. If this situation is
fueled by alcohol, the son-in·
luw should seek help. If he
doesn't, that mother needs to
remove her daughter. Please
let these people know they're
right to be fearful. - DR.
MOURAINE R. BAKER,
FOUNTAIN HILLS, ARIZ.
DEAR DR. BAKER:
Although verbal abuse does
tend to escalate over time, I
saw no reason for the parents
to step in now. Drunks (and
.abusers) tend to blame others
for their own problems. That's
why I advised the mother to
send her daughter to AI-Anon,
where she would learn that no
matter what the husband
accused her of during his
drunken rages. she was not
responsible for his behavior.
It's an important lesson. Read
on:
DEAR ABBY: My mom
went through the same thing
with my dad. Dad refused to
believe my mom when she
told him what he had said
while he was drunk, so she
videota~ him one night. She
made h1m watch the tape the
next day, and he was monified
at his behavior.
As a result he substantially
altered his drinking.
·
If the daushter can't obtain a
video camera, a simple audio
tape recorder will do just as
well. Mom had the camera just
sittins casually on a table.

AI-Anon gave my mother the
courage to videotape Dad. It
made all the dilference in their
marriage. which lasted S3
years until her death two )'Cill'S
ago. That daughter is in for an
increasingly abusive marriage
if she doesn't put a stop to
what's ' going on now. HAPPY
DAUGHTER,
SAUGERTIES, N.Y.
DEAR
DAUGHTER:
Thank you for suggesting
videotaprng the drunken husband. Other readers wrote to
say they had done it. and that it
had shocked the drinkers into
getting the help they so desperately needed. Denial is an
mtegral part of alcoholism.
Unless it can be overcome, the
drunk won't admit there is a
problem and seek help.
DEAR ABBY: Your advice
to "Fearful in Califomia" was
correct. If the mother confronts the son-in-law. it will
eitlier cause the daughter to
defend him and cling to him
even more, or cause the sonin-law to blame his wife for
the mother's actions. I know
because it hap~ned to me.
Mom didn t consult me
before she staged an "inter·
vention," thinking it would
help. My husband thought I
had put her up to it, and he
made m~ life even more hell· ·
ish than It had been. Of course,
I was determined to prove
Mother wrong. So I stayed
with him another hellish three
years, until my nerves ....ere
shot and m~ bank account was
empty. I m1ght have left .SOOJI·
or if Mom hacln 't meddled. HAPPY NOW IN COLUM·
BUS, OHIO

COLUMBUS (AP) - If

Cincinnati must now
