Throwback Thursday: Bailey Lake

AS THE OLD
OHIO FLOWS….

The Great
Kidnapping
of Adam
Smith
of 1824
By Jordan Pickens
Special to OVP

Leggett spoke with bank employees who advised that the customer
became irate when informed that they
could not honor her withdraw request
as she did not have an account with
the bank. A report was taken but no
criminal charges were filed.
Deputies were dispatched to an
address on New Lima Rd. in Rutland.
The caller had been in the Sheriff’s
Office earlier to report that a woman
was temporarily staying at his home,
however, was now refusing to leave.
Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the
woman who ultimately left the residence without further incident. No
charges have been filed.
Deputy Patterson responded to a
residence in Portland on an alarm

The year was 1824.
John Quincy Adams,
Andrew Jackson, William
H. Crawford, and Henry
Clay are locked in a Presidential election where no
major winner is declared,
and it eventually goes to
the House of Representatives for the deciding
vote. Adams is declared
the winner. There are 24
stars on the U.S. flag and
The Marquis de Lafayette
arrives in the U.S. to tour
all 24 states. Slavery was
a top interest in national
politics, and just as any
other area, Meigs County
took interest in the issue.
Most of Meigs County’s
citizens supported the
anti –slavery movement
including one of Meigs
County’s first settlers,
Hamilton Kerr. The
Underground Railroad
had been running through
Meigs County for about a
year, beginning sometime
in 1823.
After slaves would
cross the Ohio River,
their first stop was at the
home of Hamilton Kerr,
near the mouth of Leading Creek. Kerr hired
Adam Smith to act as a
guide for fugitive slaves
heading north; he would
follow the same route
taken by slaves who had
been freed by their masters. At this point the former slaves would follow
Leading Creek and Little
Leading Creek through
Rutland Township to the
home of Horace Holt, a
prominent manufacturer
of weaving reed. From
here, fugitive slaves
would travel toward
Albany. Despite being
a well-traveled route,
Smith would often run
into trouble, either from
lack of needed aid for the
runaways or from their
former owners, many of
whom were from Virginia.
(Note: West Virginia had
not yet been made a state,
and slavery was legal in
Virginia, which was on
the Southern border of
the Ohio River at this
time.)
Slave owners on the
Kanawha and Ohio Rivers
upriver from Point Pleasant, Virginia (now West
Virginia) sent out detectives on both sides of the
Ohio River to locate fugitive slaves. They came
to the conclusion that
Adam Smith was guilty of
assisting fugitive slaves in
their escape northward.
In October of 1824, four
men from Virginia arrested Smith and forced him
into the Point Pleasant
jail. The men took Smith
by force and with no
authority of law, all the
while refusing to accept
bail money for Smith’s
release. The people of
Meigs County saw “[t]

President Donald Trump kisses first lady Melania Trump during a hangar rally at Al Asad Air Base,

country.

US troops in harm’s way
AL-ASAD AIRBASE,
Iraq (AP) — In an unannounced trip to Iraq on
Wednesday, President
Donald Trump staunchly defended his decision
to withdraw U.S. forces
from neighboring Syria
despite a drumbeat of
criticism from military
officials and allies who
don’t think the job fighting Islamic State militants there is over.
Trump, making his
first presidential visit
to troops in a troubled
region, said it’s because
the U.S. military had
all but eliminated IScontrolled territory in
both Iraq and Syria that
he decided to withdraw
2,000 forces from Syria.
He said the decision
to leave Syria showed

America’s renewed stature on the world stage
and his quest to put
“America first.”
“We’re no longer the
suckers, folks,” Trump
told U.S. servicemen
and women at al-Asad
Airbase in western
Iraq, about 100 miles
or 60 kilometers west
of Baghdad. “We’re
respected again as a
nation.”
The decision to pull
U.S. forces from Syria,
however, stunned
national security advisers and U.S. allies and
prompted the resignations of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who
was not on the trip, and
the U.S. envoy to the
coalition fighting the
Islamic extremist group.

The militant group, also
known as ISIS, has lost
nearly all its territory
in Iraq and Syria but is
still seen as a threat.
Iraq declared IS
defeated within its borders in December 2017,
but Trump’s trip was
shrouded in secrecy,
which has been standard practice for presidents flying into conflict
areas.

HOUSTON (AP) —
U.S. immigration authorities said Wednesday that
they have done new medical checks on nearly every
child in Border Patrol
custody after the death of
a second youngster in the
agency’s care in the span
of less than three weeks.
Authorities did not
disclose the results of the
examinations.
An 8-year-old boy
identified by Guatemalan authorities as Felipe
Gómez Alonzo died on
Christmas Eve just before
midnight. He had been in
the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection with his father since
Dec. 18.
The boy suffered from a
cough, “glossy eyes,” fever
and vomiting and was hospitalized twice on Monday
with what was initially
diagnosed as a cold, the
agency said in a statement. The cause of death
was under investigation.
Officials at the Department of Homeland Security, the Border Patrol’s
parent agency, said that
almost all checks ordered
in reaction to the boy’s
death had been completed.
Some children detained
in more remote areas
were re-screened by emergency medical technicians
or Border Patrol agents,
officials said. In other
places, some children
were taken to medical
facilities.

about the economy being

The board’s chairman, Jerome

Trump last year.
“The only problem our economy has is the Fed,” the president said on Twitter. “They

US stocks rebound as traders return from Christmas holiday
AP Business Writer

Investors returned from
the Christmas holiday
break in a buying mood
Wednesday, sending U.S.
stocks sharply higher and
placing the market on
track for its best day in
nine months.
Gains in technology
companies, retailers,
health care and internet
stocks drove the broad
rally, which erased much
of the market’s losses
from a steep drop on
Monday. That sell-off left
the benchmark S&P 500
index on the edge of what
Wall Street calls a bear
market.
“This is a market that’s
heavily oversold, and typically you expect a strong
bounce following that,”
said Quincy Krosby,
chief market strategist at
Prudential Financial. “Oil
prices have just moved
quite markedly. And retail
is having a very strong

holiday season.”
The S&P 500 index
rose 59 points, or 2.5
percent, to 2,410 of
12:55 p.m. Eastern Time.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 521
points, or 2.4 percent,
to 22,338. The techheavy Nasdaq gained 215
points, or 3.5 percent, to
6,408. The Russell 2000
index of smaller-company
stocks picked up 30
points, or 2.4 percent,
1,297.
Trading volume was
lighter than usual following the Christmas holiday. Markets in Europe,
Hong Kong and Australia
were closed.
U.S. crude oil prices
were on track for their
biggest one-day gain in
more than two years.
Benchmark U.S. crude
climbed 7.5 percent to
$45.73 a barrel in New
York. Brent crude, used
to price international
oils, gained 6.9 percent
to $54.26 a barrel in Lon-

don.
The pickup in oil prices
helped boost energy
stocks. Marathon Petroleum rose 4.2 percent to
$56.62.
Wednesday’s gains provide the S&P 500 some
breathing room after
finishing the shortened
trading session Monday
just shy of a 20-percent
drop from its peak three
months ago. Should the
index cross that threshold and slide into a bear
market, it would mark the
end to the longest bull
market for stocks in modern history after nearly
10 years.
Stocks fell sharply
Monday after President
Donald Trump lashed
out at the central bank.

THEIR VIEW

You can’t
always get
what you want
Very rarely in this life have I gotten what I
wanted.
Almost without fail, however, I’ve gotten what
I’ve needed.
Some how, some way, whatever
higher power or cosmic force is
out there has seen fit to provide for
me with no less and no more than
exactly what I need. There’s an old
saying, “God takes care of fools and
small children,” and I can’t help but
David
think I probably fall into the former

Nearly 30 years ago, I didn’t want
columnist
to leave home and go away to college. To me, Troy had everything I
could possibly want. It was safe and it was comfortable. If I did go to college, I certainly didn’t
to the largest institute of higher learning in the
nation. I wanted to go somewhere that reminded
me of my hometown. The vagaries of life felt otherwise, however, and I ended up as one of 50,000
or so students at Ohio State.
It would turn out to be one of the best things
that ever happened to me, as I met lifelong friends
and had a series of experiences that I couldn’t possibly have had at any other college or university. It
played a huge role in making me who I am.
So influential was my time at Ohio State that
when I moved back home and started working at
the Troy Daily News, I wanted out just as quickly
as I could. I felt the bright lights and the big
city were waiting for me. Once again, however,
through time, I found out life had other plans for
me. After 22 years here, I’ve settled my roots here
and can’t possibly imagine having any other job
than the one I have.
Of course, part of the reason I feel like I was
meant to be here is because I met the woman of
my dreams — who was the complete opposite
of the type of person I saw myself spending the
rest of my life with at the time. When I was much
younger (and significantly more wild), I always
thought my soulmate would be someone who was
willing to howl at the moon all night alongside
me. I figured I needed someone who could match
me and my unpredictable lifestyle. That’s what I
thought I wanted.
It’s not what I got. Instead, once again, I got
what I needed. I found a calm, gentle soul who
was patient enough to stick with me through those
aforementioned wild days. I needed someone who
would round off my edges and make me a quieter,
better person.
Of course, my amazing wife and I would eventually decide we wanted to have children. Once
again, I had visions of what I wanted my children
to be. I wanted them to be as obsessed with sports
as I am. I wanted kids who would be willing to
watch college football games with me, breaking
down every play. I wanted three-sport athletes
who would succeed where their father failed in his
lack of an athletic career. I wanted bold, confident
kids.
Or so I thought.
Instead, I got exactly the kids I needed. I have
two children who, on a daily basis, force me to
look at things in ways I never before would have
considered. I have two kids who force me to not
only be a better father, but a better husband and
a better person, as well. I have two children who
have forced me to stop being such a kid myself
(well, to a certain degree, anyway). They have
changed my world view for the better.
Through all of those changes, however, I figured
there was one thing that would remain constant in
what I wanted — or, in this case, didn’t want.
Heading into 2018, I was pretty steadfast in
my belief that I didn’t want a dog in our family. I
didn’t want the mess, the responsibility, the financial investment or the time commitment.
I think you’ve probably figured out by now how
this story ends.
In late May, our sweet little Millie Jo, world’s
cutest beagle-spaniel mix, entered our life as a
result of a promise I made to our daughter that
if she broke the Troy Junior High School record
in the pole vault, I would finally give in and get a
dog. Seven months later, I can say — as has been
the case so often in my life — just I wrong I was.
Millie has been good for the entire family, probably me more than anyone else.
She has been a calming influence over my oftturbulent soul. No matter my mood, which usually
can best be described as “churlish,” she is always
there, ready to put her head in my lap or climb up
on my chest and lick my face. I used to wonder
why anyone would want a dog; now I wonder how
we ever got along without one.
As 2018 comes to a close in a few days, we’ll
ring in a new year. I hope 2019 brings you
health and happiness, loyal reader and true
believer. But I do not hope you necessarily get
what you want.
I do hope, however, you get what you need.

Once the juices are obtained,
the juice must then be fermented. The juice has a natural
sugar in it and a yeast culture is

can “eat” that sugar. The yeast
digests the sugar to live and
that breakdown of the sugar
is an ethanol (alcohol) with a

Big Ten appears
resurgent in 1st season
of expanded schedule
By Noah Trister
The Associated Press

The Big Ten’s expanded schedule is shaping up
to be quite a grind.
After starting the season with only three
teams in the AP Top 25, the league now has six .
That’s significant at a time when the Big Ten has
increased the number of conference games. Each
of the league’s men’s basketball teams will play
20 conference games now — up from 18 a season
ago.
Right now, there’s a bit of a lull in the schedule,
but league play resumes in early January.
“It’s the toughest year to go to 20 games,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “I think it’s great.
It’s going to be hard on all of us.”
Izzo’s team won the Big Ten last season, but
rival Michigan took the conference tournament
for a second straight year — and then went all the
way to the national title game before losing to Villanova. No. 2 Michigan and No. 8 Michigan State
look like the class of the league so far this season,
but there’s plenty of competition.
No. 13 Ohio State, No. 15 Wisconsin, No. 23
Indiana, No. 24 Iowa and unranked Nebraska have
all had their moments.
It will be a while before Michigan and Michigan
State face each other. They play twice toward the
end of the season, on Feb. 24 and March 9. By
then, the buildup could be immense. The Wolverines are still undefeated after routing Villanova
on the road and North Carolina at home. The
Spartans have losses to Kansas and Louisville, but
their resume includes a 22-point win over Iowa,
a 20-point win over UCLA and a 10-point victory
over Texas.

Larry Nassar listens during his sentencing at Eaton County Circuit Court in Charlotte, Mich., on Feb. 5, 2018. The former doctor for
Michigan State University sports-medicine and USA Gymnastics received 40 to 125 years for three first degree criminal sexual abuse
charges related to assaults at a gymnastics facility in Dimondale, Mich. Nassar has also been sentenced to 60 years in prison for three
child pornography charges in federal court and between 40 to 175 years in Ingham County for seven counts of criminal sexual conduct.

#MeToo reached sports world in 2018
By Will Graves
AP Sports Writer

One by one they came
forward, more than 150
in all. Fearful yet defiant.
Vulnerable but resolute,
buoyed by the hope of
catharsis and the promise
of justice.
Standing in a Michigan
courtroom last January,
women and girls sexually
abused by Larry Nassar
confronted the former
Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics
doctor, and over seven
draining days detailed
the devastating effect the
molestation had on their
lives.
The #MeToo movement reached the sports
world in 2018 with a
scandal that reverberated
not just in locker rooms
and gyms but in courthouses, in boardrooms
and at kitchen tables. The
sight of women being not
just heard but believed
— combined with other
breakthroughs for female
athletes in the fight for
fair treatment — created
a sense of real momentum in sports over the
past year.
Female athletes “are
taking control, and that’s
what it’s all about,” tennis
star Serena Williams said.
“Taking control of who
you are.”
While 2017 brought the
downfall of TV personalities Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose and Hollywood
mogul Harvey Weinstein,
a scandal in the sports
world that had been brewing for a few years blew

up in 2018 into shocking
front-page news.
Nassar was sentenced
to 40 to 175 years in
prison in a case that has
had widespread and devastating fallout. Michigan
State agreed to settle
victims’ lawsuits for $500
million. The university
president lost her job and
was charged with lying
to police. Others at the
school or at gymnastics’
national governing body,
USA Gymnastics, also
face charges. And the
future of the organization
is in limbo.
Jordyn Wieber, a member of the gold-medal
2012 Olympic gymnastics
team, planned to detail
her allegations against
Nassar quietly in a lawsuit. Yet as she watched
other victims share the
most difficult memories
of their lives in open
court, with their tormentor 20 feet away and a
TV camera broadcasting
it to the world, Wieber
decided to testify, too.
“I saw this effect and
this power we as Olympians had by using our
voice,” the 23-year-old
Wieber told The Associated Press. “I felt really
responsible to do that.
If I could do one small
thing in the world of
gymnastics, the world of
sports, this was it. I knew
it wasn’t going to be easy,
but I felt like it was worth
it.”
The young women also
played a role in trying to
hold USA Gymnastics
and other organizations
accountable for the way

Nassar’s abuse went
unchecked for decades.
When USA Gymnastics continued to use the
Karolyi Ranch training
center in Texas even after
victims told of how they
were abused by Nassar
there, reigning Olympic
champion and Nassar victim Simone Biles went on
Twitter to ask why. The
organization announced
almost immediately it was
leaving the facility.
Biles took then-USA
Gymnastics president
Kerry Perry to task in
August for not speaking
up to outline a way forward for the embattled
organization. Perry
resigned less than a
month later.
“The fact Simone is
able to effect the amount
of change she’s been able
to is a testament that athletes are starting to have
a little bit of power,” said
former gymnast Rachael
Denhollander, who filed
a criminal complaint
against Nassar in 2016.
The year 2018 also
saw the swift downfall of
former Carolina Panthers
owner Jerry Richardson
— who sold the team and
was fined $2.75 million
by the NFL after he was
accused of sexual harassment — and the continued pursuit of equal treatment of women in sports
like tennis and soccer.
The French Open
angered some in May
when it declined to
seed three-time winner Williams following
a 14-month break from
tennis in which she gave

birth to a daughter. Last
week, the women’s tennis tour announced that
starting in 2019, players
coming off maternity
leave or major injury may
use a special ranking for
up to three years upon
their return.
“Serena is mainly
responsible for bringing
that issue to the forefront:
Should you be treated the
same for pregnancy as
you are if you miss time
with an injury?” tennis
Hall of Famer Chris Evert
said. The new rule “obviously was an advancement in the women’s
game.”
The push by female athletes to transform their
sports wasn’t limited to
the U.S.
The South Korean
women’s curling team
that won a surprise silver
at the 2018 Olympics
came forward in November to complain of verbal
and psychological abuse
by their handlers, a pattern that included withholding prize money and
threatening to bench the
captain after learning she
wanted to start a family.
The handlers admitted to
some of the allegations
but denied others while
resigning under pressure
this month.
And members of Argentina’s women’s soccer
team used social media to
express mounting frustration over unequal treatment, including being
barred from the training
complex traditionally

The longtime head

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — LeBron James left
Los Angeles’ 127-101 win against Golden State
midway through the third quarter with a strained
left groin, and the Lakers expected to know more
about his status following an MRI exam Wednesday.
The Lakers star grabbed at his left groin after
slipping under the Warriors basket at the 7:51
mark of the third trying for a loose ball. He said he
has had the injury before but “not in a long time.”
“It’s pretty rare for me to have an injury, period,”
he said. “It happens and we’ve got a great medical
staff here, I’ve got a great trainer.”
James grabbed at his left groin area with 7:51
left in the third after slipping under the Warriors’
basket while trying for a loose ball. He tried to
stretch it out, awkwardly walked toward the Lakers
bench trying to loosen up before leaving on his own
though gingerly out the tunnel for the locker room.

James tried to stretch it out, awkwardly walked
toward the Lakers bench trying to loosen up
before leaving on his own though gingerly out the
tunnel for the locker room.
“I wasn’t able to go back into the game, obviously. I’ll get an MRI tomorrow and see what’s up,”
James said. “With me with injuries, I’m never too
concerned about them. I was able to walk off on
my own power. I felt a pop, see if I could stretch it
a few times, see if it would relieve but it didn’t. …
I did a couple exercises to see if I could continue
to go but I didn’t feel like it would benefit my
team or me. So I came back and got a jump start
on the rehab.”
James, playing his second straight Christmas
game against the Warriors at Oracle Arena after
losing last year’s matchup with Cleveland, had 17
points, 13 rebounds and five assists before exiting.
Coach Luke Walton said he would prepare for
the Lakers to be without James on Thursday night
at Sacramento.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) —
After missing the postseason for
three straight years, the Baltimore
Ravens probably wouldn’t complain at all about squeezing into
this year’s playoffs as a wild card.
Entering as AFC North champions is so much better — a scenario that stands as a distinct possibility entering the final weekend
of the regular season.
Thanks to a Lamar Jacksoninfused surge of five wins in six
games, the Ravens are on the cusp
of winning the division and hosting a first-round game. All it will
take for that to happen is a victory
Sunday at home against the Cleveland Browns (7-7-1).
“That’s definitely the first goal,
to be division champions,” coach
John Harbaugh said Monday. “And
we’re playing a championship
game on Sunday. That’s what you
work for.”
Baltimore was 4-6 on Nov. 4
before entering its bye week. An
injury to Joe Flacco paved the way
for Jackson to take over at quarterback, and the Ravens promptly
turned their season around by
combining a sound running game

a spike in the number
of abuse victims from

cautioned that the Nassar

a continuing fight.
“The cultural impact is
huge,” Denhollander said.

NFL.
Now, after Baltimore (9-6)
upset the Los Angeles Chargers
on the road Saturday night and
Pittsburgh lost in New Orleans
on Sunday, the Ravens are poised
to win their first AFC North title
since 2012.
“That’s what we put in all that
time for,” Harbaugh said. “In order
to do that, we’ve had to weather
some storms and overcome some
challenges and win some games.
Guys have done a great job. We
appreciate where we’re at. This is
the opportunity that we wanted,
and now it’s ours to go get.”
The Ravens have been here
before, with lamentable results.
Two years ago, they lost in Pittsburgh on Christmas night in a
matchup for the division crown.
Last year, Baltimore had its playoff
hopes crushed by the Cincinnati
Bengals in the season finale when
Tyler Boyd caught a 49-yard,
fourth-down touchdown pass with
44 seconds left.
Harbaugh doesn’t intend to
remind the team about that game
because, well, those who experienced it won’t soon forget it.
“We all know where we’ve been.

just think there’s a lot of great
coaches. You’ve got Frank
(Reich) in Indy, Mike (Vrabel)
in Tennessee, Doug (Marrone)
in Jacksonville. You’ve got a lot
of great players, quarterbacks,
so you’ve got a tough division.”
The AFC division often
looked at as the toughest has
been the North, which, not
surprisingly, has come down
to Baltimore vs. Pittsburgh.
Except the Ravens (9-6) host
the Browns, while the Steelers
(8-6-1) must beat visiting Cincinnati and hope their archenemies from Cleveland sidetrack
Baltimore, either beating or
tying the Ravens.
Neither the Ravens nor the
Steelers can be a wild card —
except if Pittsburgh ties the
Bengals, then Indianapolis and
Tennessee also tie. Then the
Steelers are in.
Of course, Pittsburgh also
can win the North with a draw
and a loss by Baltimore.
Your head spinning yet?

We don’t need to talk about anything,” he said. “When you have a
gut-wrenching experience, a tough
one like we’ve had the last two
years, you take those with you. It
makes you stronger. It forges you
as a person, as a competitor.”
This isn’t the same team as last
year, the year before, or even the
2012 version that rode Flacco’s
arm to a world championship. A
year ago, Jackson was preparing
to lead Louisville against Mississippi State in the TaxSlayer Bowl,
and Don Martindale was working
with the Ravens linebackers under
defensive coordinator Dean Pees.
Now, Jackson is in charge of a
flourishing offense that counts
heavily on ball control and Martindale oversees a blitzing, gambling
defense that has allowed fewer
yards and fewer points than any
unit in the league.
“The whole idea is to impose
your will on your opponent however you can do it, based on your
personnel and how you want to
play, and what your fundamental
beliefs are,” Harbaugh said. “It’s
pretty clear what we’re trying to
do. We’ll just try to roll with that
and see what happens.”

New England, the only unbeaten team at home this year,
would get the first seed with a
victory and losses by the Chiefs
and Chargers.
And get this: Houston
doesn’t even own a division
title. If the Texans fall at home
to Jacksonville, the winner
of the Colts at Titans game
in Tennessee takes the AFC
South, and the Texans become
a wild card, joining either the
Chiefs or Chargers.
Texans coach Bill O’Brien,
whose club began the season
0-3, is intrigued by the division
being so ensconced in the playoff picture this year.
“I think that’s an interesting
question because I can remember the question was, two years
ago, ‘Why is the AFC South so
bad?’” he says. “Now, ‘Why is it
so good?’
“…I’ve never thought it was
bad. I think every year it’s

the second NFC wild card.
“We’ve got to empty the

we’ve got to play next week at

Rudolph says. “I’m really looking forward to that environment.”
In the AFC, seeding is more
muddled. Any of four teams
could be the top or second
seed.
The simplest route is if Kansas City (11-4) and New England (10-5), currently the top
two in the conference, both win
Sunday. But if the Chiefs lose
at home to Oakland and the
Chargers (11-4) win at Denver,
Los Angeles moves into the top
spot.
Houston (10-5) also could
wind up No. 1 in the AFC with
losses by the Chiefs, Patriots
against the Jets, and Chargers.

Gregg Williams, who took over
when Hue Jackson was fired
halfway through the season.
“That does not come easy.”
The Ravens selected Lamar
Jackson with the 32nd pick of
the first round, figuring he was
a backup at best behind 10-year
starter Joe Flacco. Since a hip
injury that sidelined Flacco in
early November, Baltimore is
4-1 with Jackson leading a runfirst attack that has kept the
Ravens alive as they try to end
a three-year playoff drought.
A victory against the Browns
on Sunday gives Baltimore the
AFC North title.
Flacco was ready to return
last week, but coach John Harbaugh stuck with Jackson over
the 2013 Super Bowl MVP.
“He’s the reincarnation of
Michael Vick,” Tampa Bay
defensive tackle Gerald McCoy
said. “He’s a lot faster than you
think on the field. When you

see him in person, he can really
run. He’s going to be good for a
long time.”
Sam Darnold (third overall
to the New York Jets), Josh
Allen (seventh to Buffalo) and
Josh Rosen (10th to Arizona)
have had pretty much typical
rookie quarterback years —
more struggles than successes.
But all three have offered
glimpses that they can lead
their respective franchises for
years.
Darnold strained his foot at
Miami on Nov. 4, a game in
which he threw four interceptions. In the three outings
before he was sidelined, the
21-year-old quarterback completed just 47 percent of his
passes — 52 of 110 — for 558
yards and two touchdowns
with a whopping seven INTs.
After missing three games,
he has six TDs and one pick,
attributing the turnaround to

getting a chance to watch and
learn from Josh McCown. But
the Jets lost the past two.
“Sometimes you’re going to
go out there and play well and
win. Sometimes you’re going
to play well and lose,” Darnold
said. “The NFL is a tough
league. I found that out really
quick.”
Allen also was much better
after returning from a right
elbow injury that kept him out
four games. On the open-ended
question of who had emerged
as the leader of the Buffalo
offense, coach Sean McDermott chose Allen, citing how
he responded coming off the
injury.
“You become the leader by
earning the respect of your
teammates,” McDermott said.
“He was willing to do that early
on. He didn’t try to jump out
in front when he hadn’t earned
it.”

Self had to replace all
five of his starters, or
that some other up-andcoming program was
stocked with the kind
of talent that Kansas
seems to get every season.
This was not supposed to be one of those
years.
Yes, the Jayhawks lost

their entire backcourt
of Devonte Graham, Svi
Mykhailiuk and Malik
Newman to the NBA.
And yes, rival Kansas
State returned almost
its entire roster from a
team that went to the
Elite Eight last year,
giving the Wildcats a
real feeling of confidence heading into the
season.
But the Jayhawks
merely restocked with
a bevy of high-profile
transfers and five-star
recruits, and the result
was a No. 1 ranking that
they held through much
of the nonconference
slate. It wasn’t until this
past weekend against
Arizona State that they
lost their first game —
without injured big man
Udoka Azubuike — that

they dropped further
than second in the AP
poll.
Now, the fourthranked Jayhawks (10-1)
have a final tuneup
Saturday against Eastern Michigan before
setting their sights on
an unprecedented 15th
consecutive conference
championship.
“The reality of it is
we weren’t going to run
the table,” Self said.
“Let’s not get carried
away, and I hate saying
this — you never want
to lose — but certainly
you’d rather learn from
a nonconference loss
than a conference loss,
so hopefully we get
something from (the
loss to Arizona State).
I think it’s a teaching
moment.”

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, a No. 1 draft choice, is one of the rookie quarterbacks
who have had an impact in their NFL debuts.

Browns go from winless to almost winners
CLEVELAND (AP)
— Just a year ago, the
Browns were winless.
They were aimless. They
looked hopeless.
Disgusted with their
laughable team, some
Cleveland fans spent
the holidays planning a
tongue-in-cheek parade
around FirstEnergy Stadium to celebrate a probable 0-16 season. Coach
Hue Jackson promised to
jump into Lake Erie.
Those gloomy days are
long gone. The Browns
have turned it around.
“It’s been a long time
coming,” wide receiver
Rashad Higgins said.
“We were due for a winning team.”
Overdue.
With their 26-18
win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday,
the Browns (7-7-1)
completed the biggest
turnaround in franchise
history. Cleveland’s
seven-game improvement
— and it could be eight
with a win this week in
Baltimore — since last
season tops the six-game
jumps the team made in
1976 and 2007.
It’s been a remarkable
swing for a franchise that
has had just two winning
seasons since its 1999
expansion reboot. And
it’s a stunning rise for
a team that endured a
late-October coaching
change, and if not for
a play here and there,
would be preparing for
the playoffs.
In an unpredictable
season across the NFL,
Cleveland’s one-year
comeback may be the
biggest shocker of all.
As the final seconds
bled from the clock on
Sunday and the Browns
clinched their best home
record in 11 years at 5-21, rookie quarterback
Baker Mayfield took the
snap and dropped to a
knee before urging the
sellout crowd to scream
louder than it had all day.
After shaking hands
with a few Cincinnati
players, Mayfield, who
had been serenaded with
chants of “Ba-ker! Ba-

ker!” throughout much
of the second half, then
sprinted toward the
locker room.
In a way, Mayfield’s
departure after the home
finale felt more like an
arrival. The Browns
are back, and Mayfield
intends to keep them
around.
“I relate to Cleveland,”
said Mayfield, who threw
three touchdown passes
and improved to 6-6 as a
starter. “The work ethic,
the stuff that you have
to earn it around here,
that is what the Browns
are all about. It is going
to be a good relationship
for a long time.”
To interim coach
Gregg Williams, Cleveland’s surge this season
isn’t a surprise. Williams,
who has led the Browns
to a 5-2 record since
taking over for Jackson,
has always felt the team
had enough talent to win
and is finally putting it
together.
“I don’t ever walk
into any game thinking
that we can’t win, and I
thought that last year,”
said Williams, whose
candidacy for the fulltime job after the season
improves with every
victory. “I thought we
played extremely well
enough in many of those
games to win games, and
that is how close and
tough the league is. It
comes down to anywhere
from three to four to four
to five plays a game.
“Now, we are making more of those plays.
The more you make, the
easier it is to buy in to
understanding of this is
how we play as a team. A
team wins the game, not
individuals.”
Williams has always
put team goals first, and
while there are several
factors that have led to
Cleveland’s turnaround,
he believes an emphasis
on accountability has
transformed the Browns.
“We have been able to
help them understand
that you have to do your
job and you have to block
out the outside distrac-

tions,” he said. “You have
to focus and rally together and play for each
other. They have done a
very good job of not only
just doing their job but
supporting each other.
People see that in team
execution over individual
execution.”
Williams will likely
go into Sunday’s game
against the Ravens (9-6)
uncertain of his future.
Long before the Browns
rattled off five wins in
six games, general manager John Dorsey said
Williams will be one of
the candidates he interviews when the season
ends.
Dorsey may never have
considered that Williams
would emerge as possibly the best coach going
forward.
Williams has not publicly campaigned for
the job, and he wasn’t
about to start Monday.
He declined to say if
he was hoping to get a
guarantee like the one
Baltimore gave John Harbaugh last week.
“We are on to the
Ravens,” he said.
Williams’ short-term
goal is to have his team
ready to take on Baltimore’s league-leading
defense, and to possibly
spoil the Ravens’ playoff
hopes. If Cleveland beats
Baltimore, the Pittsburgh
Steelers could take the
division with a win over
Cincinnati.
“We will treat this like
it is our playoff game,”
Williams said. “We will
treat it that way because
that is how intense the
game is going to be. It
will be fun.”
NOTES: Rookie CB
Denzel Ward remains in
concussion protocol after
suffering his second head
injury in three weeks on
Sunday. Williams said
Ward “was much better”
when he left the stadium
but doesn’t know if he’ll
face the Ravens. … At
3-1-1, the Browns have
clinched their first winning season inside the
AFC North since it was
formed in 2002.
