NFL CAMP

STEELERS CAMP

ROUNDUP

The Miami Dolphins know how dominant
their defense is, and they want to keep it that
way.
The Dolphins took another big step toward
shutting down opposing offenses for years to
come, signing All-Pro defenSive end Jaspn Taylor to a six-year, $42 million contract Monday
on the eve of traini.ng camp.
"~ 1e're trying to keep our nucleus together,"
Miami coach Dave Wannsredt said. "Most of
these guys are 26 or 27 years old and just getting into the prime of their careers.''
Taylor, 26, had a career-high 14 112 sacks J.,st
year for the AFC East champions. He was chosen for the All-Pro team and vo ted a Pro Bowl
starter, both for the first time.
"You 're talking about a player in the early
stages of developing into a dominating player
in this league,"Wan nstedt said.
Taylor's contract rep la ces the one-year, _$5.39
million deal the Dolphins tendered him m
February, when he was designated their franchise player.
The long-term agreement further ensures
the stability of a defense that ranked third in
the NFL last year in points allowed.
Six veteran starters are under contract
through at least 2003: Taylor, linebackers Zach
Thom~s and Derrick Rodgers, tackle Daryl
Gardener, and cornerbacks Sam Madison and
Patrick Surtain.
~1iami also "signed four rookies, including
Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel, the sixth.JDUnd pick; No. 2 choice Chris Chambers, a
wide recetver from Wtsconsm; and Flonda
State running back Travis Minor, a third-round
selection.
Patriots
Running back Robert Edwards, ·w ho severely injured his knee in a beach football game at
the 1999 Pro Bowl, flunked the team's conditioning test, falling :i second short at the end of
20 straight 60-yard dashes.
Edwards said he failed because he was nervous, and wants to try again. But he was placeci
on the team's physically unable to perform list,
kecpinr, him out at the start of training camp.
Also, New England signed first-round draft
pick Richard Seymour to a six-year deal for
$14.3 million, including a $4.8 million signing
bonus. The 6-foot-6 defensive linemen played
tackle and tnd and started for 2 112 years n

short-passing attack that tjnished last in the
NFL.
Panthers
Carolina released veteran defensive end
Chuck Smith, who played in only two games
last season because of arthritic knees after signing a five-year, $21.5 million contract.
Wide receiver Patrick Jeffers, co-- holder of
the team record for touchdown catches, says
he's concerned abou t persistent swelling in his
left knee. Jeffers missed all of last season after
injuring the knee in training camp.
Lions
Detroit. agreed to terms with three draft
picks, including :irst- round tackle Jeff Backus.
T he Lions also announced agreements with
center Dominic Raiola and defensive tackle
Shaun Rogers.
Backus will receive $6.6 73 million over five
years, with incentives that can bring the contra·ct's value to about $8 million.
Bears·
Wide recei·:er Bobby Engram, who tore up
his right knee in the third game of last season,
worked out and said he's finally. ready to come
bJck. Engflm led C hicago in receiving in 1998
and 1999. ·
Bills
Buffalo released free agent rookie quarterback Tim Hassel beck, bitther of Seattle starter
Matt Hassel beck, and cut punter Pat Pidgeon .
Packers
Green Bay signed wideout Robert Ferguson, the team's second-round draft pick out of
Texas A&M. With a recent dropoff in production from top receiver Antonio Freeman, Ferguson will likely need to contribute quickly.

LATROllE, Pa . (AP) - Mike Mularkey
has tried to avoid using the term "simplified"
to describe the Steeiers' new offense since
replacing Kevin Gilbride as offensive coordinator.
Now Mularkey wishes the subject had
never been brought up.
"I think the simplified thing has been
blown out of proportion," he said. " It's not
going to be a vanilla offense, [ can tell you
that:·
Gone from the offense are most of
Gi!hride's read routes, which required
receivprs and quarterbacks to read defenses
on the fly.
But Mularkey said the offense is not so simpie that it will be an open book to NFL
defenses.
"I think people are reading it the wrong
way - that it's a simple offense," Mularkey
said. " It is easier for the players to perform,
but we're going to do some things that we
have not done here, even when Chan (Gailey) was here."
Gailey was the offensive coordinator in
1'997 when Kardell Stewart had his best season as a quarterback and the Steelers reached
the AFC Championship Game.
Gailey capitalized on Stewart's mobility,
taking him om of the pocket to pass or run .
Mularkey is reviving those rollouts and
bootlegs, and has added plenty of pre-snap
shifts and motion .
Before nearly every snap, tight ends, fullbacks and wide receivers shift simultaneously,
along with another player running in motion.
The defense must react up until the ball is

snapped, something the Sreelers hope will
catch them off balance.
"It gives defenses complications," Stewart
said. "When you're stale and just sitting there,
they can do what they want to do. They can
dictate. Now, we're going to be the guys with
the opportunity to dictate."
The New York GiantS went to the Super
Bowl last year using a similarly fluid offense.
They also used it to beat rhe Steelers 30-10. ·
But the Steelers say their offense is unique,
•nd not a carbon copy of the Giants' strategy
last year. ,
"Coach Mularkey has put together his
scheme over the course of time," said defensive coordinator Tim Lewis. '.'I don't know if
it necessarily came from the Giants. In his
mind, he's carried this playbook with him for
a number of years." .
Players say practicing against the new
offense is also preparing them for anyone
who uses a lot of motion before the snap.
" It's good' to see it now so much in practice
. because it takes some time to get used to it;'
said strong safety Lee Flowers. "Qur offense is
doing a great job with it. They're going to
catch some teams off guard, particularly in
this division where you don't see it that
much ."
Mularkey said he was hired to bring a new
look to the Steelers' offense and he believes
that's just what he's done.
.
"We are going ,tb be a physical bunch," he
said. "But also,, we want to be a fast offense,
and I think getting away from that thinking
process and becoming reactors will help in
that regard."

BELOW IS A CHECKLIST THAT YOU, OUR CUSTOMERS,. CAN ROUTINELY DO
TO ASSURE OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE IN YOUR SYSTEM:
0 l. Check air filters in furnace or fan coil every 3 to 4 weeks and replace if necessary.
0 2. Clean dust off of your indoor coil.
·
0 3. Keep outdoor unit free of debris.
0 4. Make sure outdoor unit stays in a level position.
HERE ARE A FEW OPERATIONAL TIPS TO HELP UNDERSTAND YOUR SYSTEM:
For heat, set desired temperature to a level above room temperature. On riiost systems the
thermostat is set to automatically engage emergenCy-/auxiliary heat when the desired
temperature is set more than 2° F above room temperature.
For cooling, set desired temperature below that of room temperature. ,
Most neW-er thermostats are equipped with an "auto" mode feature. This will provide heating

WASHINGTON (AP) Federal
Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said
Tuesday the economy is still flagging and
another interest rate cut may be needed,
even as he deflected criticism that monetary policy has lost some of its punch.
"Should conditions warrant, we may
need to ease further," he said, referring
to another possible cut in interest rates.
Greenspan's twice-yearly economic
report to the Senate Banking Committee tracked the written report he presented to the House Financial Services
Committee last week.
On Wall Street, bad news about some
companies' earnings and revenue sent
stocks tumbling. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 183.30 points to

TRY THIS NEW HAT- Atlanta pitcher John Smoltz made a rare relief appearance in Tuesday's loss to the Cincfnnatl Red s. (AP)

ATLANTA (AP) - When
· John Burkett's control abancloned him on rwo fifth-inning
pitches, Aaron Boone and
Jason LaRue made him pay.
"I .was real close to getting
out the jam," the Atlanta pitcher said Tuesday night after the
Braves lost 11-3 to the Cincinnati Reds. " If I could've kept
the ball down, it ·would've
made a big difference."
Down 4-2, Burkett left a
fastball up in the strike zone
that Boone hammered for an
R.Bl ground-rule double, and
another that La'Rue hit for a
two-run single.
"The main thing is we fell
behind by four early, but got
rwo runs back in the second,"
said Burkett, whose ER.A rose
from an NL-best 2.38 to 2.51.
' "It's my fa ult we didn't keep it
close:'
Boone and LaRue each
drove in three runs as the Reds
beat Atlanta for the second
straight night. Jim Brower (5-7)
won his first start since April
24, allowing six hits and rwo
earned runs in six innings.
The Braves' lead over
Philadelphia is just one game
in the NL East.
"We'll have to get the job
done tomorrow,'' Atlanta second baseman Marcus Giles
said. "We don't want to get
swept."
The Reds took a 4-0 lead in
the first on Sean Casey's RBI
ground-rule double, Boone's
R.BJ grounder and Dmi tri
Young's two- run homer.

Brower thought his catcher,
Lall..ue, made the play of the
game in the bottom of the first.
With the ba.ses loaded and one
out, right fielder Adam Dunn
caught Ken Caminiti's flyball
and threw to LaRue, who finished the double play by tagging qut Mark DeRosa at the
plate.
Atlanta closed to 4-2 in the
second on Andruw Jones' leadoff homer and Giles' R.BI double.
Burkett (7 -8) allowed seven
runs- four earned - in six
innings. He is 1-3 in his last
seven starts, a span of 45
innings that includes a 2.60
ERA. Burkett had gone 14
starts. without allowing four
earned runs.
The Reds took a 9-2 lead in
seventh off John Smoltz, who
made his second relief appearance in three days. Smoltz gave
up twou nearned runs on
LaRue's R.BI single and Juan
Castro's sacrifice fly. The Braves
intentionally walked Young
rwice in front of LaRue, and
each time the Reds catcher
delivered .
Giles had an R.BI single in
the seventh that made it 9-3.
Boone's sacrifice fly in the
eighth ended the scoring.
Brower, who began the year
in the R eds' rotation, but
pitched in relief from May 13July 14, made his third consecutive start. He lost a 2-1 decision to Burkett last Thursday,
allowing six hits and rwo
earned runs in seyen innings.

MAC FOOTBALL

Coaches pick
Toledo for title
DETROIT (AP) For a quarter century, Tom .
Amstutz has been dreaming of coaching the Toledo football team.
Now that he's got the job, he's also facing some big
expectations. '
.
The Rockets and their first-year coach were named
Tuesday as the favorite to .end Marshall's four-year reign
as the kings of the Mid-American Conference.
Toledo was picked as the winner of
the MAC West by 36 of 51 voters in the
media poll, and as the championshipgame winner by 25 .
Last seasou, the Rockets went 10- 1,
including a win at Penn State, but a loss
to Western Michigan kept them out of
the MAC title game.
Pruett
"We felt like we deserved to be in a
bowl last year, and that is going to be a
motivating factor for us this season,'' Amstutz said . "We've
been picked number one because of the .talent we have
coming back, but that doesn't mean a thing.
·
"We've got to go out and win the games on the field.
That's where we ·slipped up last year."
Amstutz played for Toledo in the late 1970s and has
been a Rockets assistant coach for most of th e seasons
since, but that didn't mean he would leave things in the
status quo. One of his first Illoves was tc:i install a spread
passing attack, a surprise given the return of the MAG's
leading rusher, Chester Taylor.

declarer would have

Another combined
one-hitter for Big Un-it
BY THE ASSOCIATED. PRESS

Randy Johnson was way too
much for the San Diego
Padres.Then again, so was Luis
Gonzalez.
Johnson struck out 14 in 7
1- 3 innings and combined
with a pair of relievers on a
one-hitter as the Arizona Diamondbacks overwhelmed the
Padres 11-0 Tuesday night.
"I felt pretty good today arid
felt pretty locked in," Johnson
said.
Gonzalez gave the Big Unit
all the support he needed , hitting his 39th and 40th homers
and driving in five runs. Gonzalez leads the majors with 99
RB!s.
"It's nice, but at the same
time I'm in the middle of a
pennant race," Gonzalez said.
"Our team is focused on trying to win this thing."
·
Gonzalez set a learn record
for homers, surpassing the 38
that Jay Bell hit in 1999.
Bubba Trammell singled in
the first inning for the Padres'
Jone hit off Johnson (13-5).
Relievers Troy Brohawn and
Erik Sabel finished up th~
shutout for the NL West lead-

m.

Last Thursday, Johnson
struck out 16 in seven innings
of relief against San Diego,
completing a suspended game
begun a day earlier by Curt
Schilling. The Padres only had
one hit in that. game, too.
"You're talking one of the
greatest pitchers of all time
with what he's accomplished,"
Padres manager Bruce Bochy
said. "You know you have

Houston scored twice in the
tt.ird off Matt Morris (12-6),
.whose. error played a key role
in the inning. Craig Biggio's
single drove in one run, an;!
jeff Bagwell's sacrifice fly
drove home the other.

Phillies 10, Expos 2
Nelson Figueroa (2-2)
allowed two runs in 7 2-3
innings and had three hits, and
Tomas Perez homered from
each side of the plate for the
first multihomer game his
career.
Travis Lee added a three-run
homer in a six-run third at
Philadelphia, which won for
just the fifth time in 13 games
since the All-Star break and
closed within one game of
first-place Atlanta in the NL
East.
Tony Armas Jr. (8-9) allowed
six runs and eight hits in three

A's win in bott\)m' of
ninth - Dye deal on

-deck?
The Oakland Athletics did
just fine without Jermaine
Dye.
While speculation swirled
that the A's would get Dye in
a three-team trade, they beat
Minnesota 7-6 Tuesday night
on third baseman Corey
Koskie's error in the bottom of
the ninth inning.
Terrence Long doubled and
scored when Ron Cant's
grounder got through Koskie's
legs, givi11g Oakland its eighth
win in 10 games.
The surging A's, a major
league-best 16-5 in July, closed
within four games of the
Twins for the wild-card spot.
Minnesota lost its fifth in a
row.
Meanwhile, trade talk heated up involving Dye. An AllStar outfielder last year, he

CLEVELAND (AP) -Don't go kicking any
infield dirt on the Chicago White Sox just yet.
"We still have time left;' said manager Jerry
Manuel after his club again climbed one game
over .500 Tuesday night with a 4-1 win over the
Cleveland Indians.
"If we can hang around, apd get hot like we
· ldid earlier this season when we went 22-7, I'd
like our chances."
The defending AL Central champions were
14-29 on May 23, but despite losing Frank
Thomas and David Wells to season-ending
injuries, they've gone 35-20 since and are how
· within eight games of the Indians.
".We've .got it back to .500," said Sean Lowe.
(6-2), who dominated the Indians for 7 2-3
innings. "Hopefully, we can climb above that
now."
Lowe, who has been bounced . around by
Chicago the past two years,..!Jad the most dominant start of his career and Ray Durham hit a
rwo-run homer and thrt;w out a runner at
home to lead the White Sox.
"That's about as good as I can pitch," lowe
said.
Lowe was rocked by the Indians in his previous start last week at home, but rebounde'd by
striking out a career-high eight. He also got
some help from his defense as Chicago gunned
down two runners at the plate in the fifth.
Lowe gave up a career-high 11 hits in losing
to the Indians on July 19, but the converted
middle reli~ver who replaced Wells in the starting rotation, was in control finm the start.
