Thousands of Ohioans who
serve in the National Guard and
military reserves are awaiting
word on whether they'll be
called up to defend their country.
.
President Bush authorized
activating up to 50,000
reservists Friday, three days after
hijackers slammed commercial
airliners into the World Trade
Center in New York and the
Pentagon in Washington.
Capt. Neal . O'Brien, a
spokesman for the Na.tional
Guard in Ohio, said soldiers in
the state could know by
Wednesday if they're needed.

their part and ready to go."
Ohio has about 15,000

at least some of them will be

The Carolina Panthers might take a bus rather than a plane
to Atlanta. The New York Jets considered going to New England by road, but decided against it.
.
Any way you look at it, the NFL will be different when the
league restarts Sunday after a week off because of the terrorist
bombings in New York and Washington.
And a lot less comfortable.
"The commissioner has ·decided that our No. 1 priority is
security," Milt Ahlerich, the NFL's senior director of security,
said Monday.
.
.
So when fans get to stadiums Sunday - early, the league
urges - their cars will be checked, the parking zones will ,b e
farther from stadiums and they'll be checked again going
through the gates. There will be a lot more uniformed police
around, too.
. The teams probably ~ll be seeing the regular officials, too.
According to a league source, the two sides worked out an
agreement pending a ratification vote by. the union.
There probably will be a 16-game season - commissioner
Paul Tagliabue is expected to announce Tuesday that the games
called off Sunday and Monday will be made up on what would
have been wild card weekend Jan 5-6.
That means there will be eight teams in the playoffi instead ·
of I 2, so a marginal contender like Jacksonville was lobbying
with Tagliabue to play 15 games and keep the 12-team.playoffs
intact.
.
And finally, the locked-out regular officials may be back.
There were indications Monday that there might be some
progress in labor talks.
Some players and coaches remained concerned about travel.
Carolina coac h George Seifert said the Panthers were considering driving to Atlanta for this week's game rather than Oying.
There are many strange twists to the schedule, however it is
~evamped.

'Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and New Orleans will be off next
weekeng, and Arizona, which WaS off the first week of the regular season, hasn 't played since its last exhibition game Aug. 31.
That will make it 24 days without a game when the Car<Unals
face Dekver in "I;empe on Sunday night.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Rey
hit a go-ahead RBI single in a ihree-run
ninth, and the Mets returned from their trying week off with a win at PNC Park.
Ordonez's hit and pinch-hitter Mark
Johnson's two-run double made a wi,nner of
John Franco (6-2) on his 41st. birthday.
Franco, a native New Yorker, is th e Mets
player probably most personally affected by
last week's terrorist attacks.
Wearing caps honoring New York fire fighters, police and rescue workers, plus
American flags on their jerseys and hats, the
Mets won for the 18th time in 23 games.
D-backs 7, Rockies 3
Randy Johnson (19-6) pitched eight solid
innings, and Steve Finley drove in four runs
at Coo rs Field as Arizona increased its NL
West lead to two games over San Francisco.

operation from now on
BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Daily Sentinel

WA:sHINGTON (AP) - U.S. law
enforcement officials investigating
last week's terrorist attacks are pulling
in more people ·for questioning, statinning armed g-o.~ards on commercial
jets and asking Congress for new
laws to clamp down on terrorism.
··· Attorney Gener~l John Ashc roft
stressed the urgency of the moment
Monday by saying that associates of
the hijackers "may be a continuing
presence in the United States."
"It's 'very likely there was significant ground support and reinforce 7
ment assistance fiom collaborators"
for last Tuesday's four teams of terrorists, Ashcroft said on CNN's "Larry
King Live" program.
As of Monday, the FBI _ had
detained 49 people for questioning,
holding them on immigration violations, double the number of several
days ago: Some have asked for
lawyers, and none have been charged
in the attack,s that may have kilkd
more than 5,000 people.

In adoitton, aurhonties are lookmg

· The FBI is keeping a tight hold on
its witnesses, jailing an unsp~cified
number·of them because :hey might
otherwise flee. The Justice Department previously confirmed two peopie were arrested on surh warrants.
Courts have sealed all information
about those arrested.

those in custody were talking. FBI

U.S. official' have said Saudi Arabian exile Osama bin Laden and his alQaeda organization are the prime
suspects in the attacks. Bin Laden has

Ashcroft outlined the sky marshals
plan along with additional details of
the legislative package he asked Con- ·
gress to pass immediately. It would
include use of the money~ laundering
statutes to prosecute people who
provide resources to a terrorist organization. The package also included
nationwide wiretap authorization so
that when a suspected terrorist
moved around the country, · law
enforcement agencies wouldn't have
to get additional court approval for a
